ZnO/ITO/ZnO sandwich structure films were fabricated. The effects of buffer layer on the structure and optical properties of ZnO films were investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence, optical transmittance, and absorption measurements. XRD spectra indicate that a buffer layer has the effects of lowering the grain orientation of ZnO films and increasing the residual stresses in the films. The near-band-edge emissions of ZnO films deposited on both single indium tin oxide (ITO) buffer and ITO/ZnO double buffers are significantly enhanced compared with that deposited on a bare substrate due to the quantum confinement effect. The mechanical properties and fracture behavior of silicon carbide (3C-SiC) thin films grown on silicon substrates were characterized using bulge testing combined with a refined load-deflection model for long rectangular membranes. Plane-strain modulus E-ps, prestress so, and fracture strength s(max) for 3C-SiC thin films with thickness of 0.40 mu m and 1.42 mu m were extracted. The E, values of SiC are strongly dependent on grain orientation. The thicker SIC film presents lower so than the thinner film due to stress relaxation. The s(max) values decrease with increasing film thickness. The statistical analysis of the fracture strength data were achieved by Weibull distribution function and the fracture origins were predicted.

Ultrasonic metal welding can be used to join two metal foils. There are two different effects under ultrasonic welding. They are surface effect and volume effect. These two effects were validated under macro experiments. Then how to validate in micro test is seldom researched. EBSD method was used to research the microstructure evolution of AA6061 under ultrasonic welding. The image maps indicating all Euler angle and the correlated misorientation angle distribution of both original foil and welding sample were got by EBSD in order to understand how ultrasonic welding affect the grain orientation and microstructure. The test shows that after ultrasonic vibration, the grain size has little change. And ultrasonic vibration results in a very weak texture. FEM results also validate these conclusions.

Nesta tese, ferroeléctricos relaxor (I dont know uf the order is correct) de base Pb das familias (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O3 (PLZT), Pb(Mg1/3,Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT), Pb(Zn1/3,Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PZN-PT) foram investigados e analisados.

One of the fundamental problems with image processing of petrographic thin sections is that the appearance (colour I intensity) of a mineral grain will vary with the orientation of the crystal lattice to the preferred direction of the polarizing filters on a petrographic microscope. This makes it very difficult to determine grain boundaries, grain orientation and mineral species from a single captured image. To overcome this problem, the Rotating Polarizer Stage was used to replace the fixed polarizer and analyzer on a standard petrographic microscope. The Rotating Polarizer Stage rotates the polarizers while the thin section remains stationary, allowing for better data gathering possibilities. Instead of capturing a single image of a thin section, six composite data sets are created by rotating the polarizers through 900 (or 1800 if quartz c-axes measurements need to be taken) in both plane and cross polarized light. The composite data sets can be viewed as separate images and consist of the average intensity image, the maximum intensity image, the minimum intensity image, the maximum position image, the minimum position image and the gradient image. The overall strategy used by the image processing system is to gather the composite data sets, determine the grain boundaries using the gradient image, classify the different mineral species present using the minimum and maximum intensity images and then perform measurements of grain shape and, where possible, partial crystallographic orientation using the maximum intensity and maximum position images.

Micromorphology is used to analyze a wide range of sediments. Many microstructures have, as yet, not been analyzed. Rotation structures are the least understood of microstructures: their origin and development forms the basis of this thesis. Direction of rotational movement helps understand formative deformational and depositional processes. Twenty-eight rotation structures were analyzed through two methods of data extraction: (a) angle of grain rotation measured from Nikon NIS software, and (b) visual analyses of grain orientation, neighbouring grainstacks, lineations, and obstructions. Data indicates antithetic rotation is promoted by lubrication, accounting for 79% of counter-clockwise rotation structures while 21 % had clockwise rotation. Rotation structures are formed due to velocity gradients in sediment. Subglacial sediments are sheared due to overlying ice mass stresses. The grains in the sediment are differentially deformed. Research suggests rotation structures are formed under ductile conditions under low shear, low water content, and grain numbers inducing grain-to-grain interaction.

Cellular automaton (CA) was used to simulate dynamic recrystallization (DRX) during thermomechanical deformation. Initial grain size, initial grain orientation and dislocation density were used as input data to the CA model. Flow curve, dislocation density, final grain size and orientation, and DRX volume fraction were the output data which were compared with experimental data to validate the model. The model proposed in this work considered the thermomechanical parameters (e.g., temperature and strain rate) and their role on the nucleation and growth kinetics during DRX. It was shown that the CA model can predict the final microstructure and flow curve to a high degree of accuracy and was able to successfully simulate the volume fraction of DRX as a function of strain for a wide range of deformation conditions.

The substructure and texture development during dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of an austenitic Ni–30%Fe model alloy was investigated using hot torsion testing. The current results revealed that the DRX texture was dominated by grains with a low Taylor factor component. This was related to the preferred nucleation and lower consumption rates of these grains during DRX. The substructure of DRX grains was ‘‘random” in character and displayed complex subgrain/cell arrangements that largely depended on grain orientation.

The evolution of crystallographic texture and deformation substructure was studied in a type 316L austenitic stainless steel, deformed in rolling at 900 °C to true strain levels of about 0.3 and 0.7. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used in the investigation and a comparison of the substructural characteristics obtained by these techniques was made. At the lower strain level, the deformation substructure observed by EBSD appeared to be rather poorly developed. There was considerable evidence of a rotation of the pre-existing twin boundaries from their original orientation relationship, as well as the formation of highly distorted grain boundary regions. In TEM, at this strain level, the substructure was more clearly revealed, although it appeared rather inhomogeneously developed from grain to grain. The subgrains were frequently elongated and their boundaries often approximated to traces of {111} slip planes. The corresponding misorientations were small and largely displayed a non-cumulative character. At the larger strain, the substructure within most grains became well developed and the corresponding misorientations increased. This resulted in better detection of sub-boundaries by EBSD, although the percentage of indexing slightly decreased. TEM revealed splitting of some sub-boundaries to form fine microbands, as well as the localized formation of microshear bands. The substructural characteristics observed by EBSD, in particular at the larger strain, generally appeared to compare well with those obtained using TEM. With increased strain level, the mean subgrain size became finer, the corresponding mean misorientation angle increased and both these characteristics became less dependent on a particular grain orientation. The statistically representative data obtained will assist in the development of physically based models of microstructural evolution during thermomechanical processing of austenitic stainless steels.

A large-scale computational and statistical strategy is presented to investigate the development of plastic strain heterogeneities and plasticity induced roughness at the free surface in multicrystalline films subjected to cyclic loading conditions, based on continuum crystal plasticity theory. The distribution of plastic strain in the grains and its evolution during cyclic straining are computed using the finite element method in films with different ratios of in-plane grain size and thickness, and as a function of grain orientation (grains with a {1 1 1} or a {0 0 1} plane parallel to the free surface and random orientations). Computations are made for 10 different realizations of aggregates containing 50 grains and one large aggregate with 225 grains. It is shown that overall cyclic hardening is accompanied by a significant increase in strain dispersion. The case of free-standing films is also addressed for comparison. The overall surface roughness is shown to saturate within 10 to 15 cycles. Plasticity induced roughness is due to the higher deformation of {0 0 1} and random grains and due to the sinking or rising at some grain boundaries.

Deformation twinning plays an important role in the yielding of extruded magnesium alloys, especially when loaded in compression along the extrusion axis. The magnitude of this contribution is not accurately known. The present study employs electron backscatter diffraction to reveal the influence of grain orientation on twin-volume fraction for alloy AZ31 tested in compression to strains between 0.008 and 0.015. For these strains, it is seen that approximately 45 pct of the deformation can be attributed to "tensile" twinning. The variation of twin-volume fraction over different orientation classes correlates closely with the maximum Schmid factors for both tensile twinning and basal slip. These effects are readily explained quantitatively using a mean field crystal plasticity model without recourse to stochastic effects. Encouraged by this, we introduce an analytical approximation based on the uniformity of (axial) work. © 2013 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International.

The present work has investigated the evolution of microbands (MBs) and their interaction with strain-induced NbC precipitates during uniaxial compression of a model austenitic Fe-30Ni-Nb steel at 925 °C. The (1 1 0) fibre grains, both without and with copious amounts of precipitates, contained up to large strains crystallographic MBs aligned close to the highly stressed {1 1 1} slip planes having large Schmid factors. The MBs thus maintained their crystallographic character during straining, through continuously rearranging themselves, and did not follow the macroscopically imposed rigid body rotation. During double-pass deformation, fine NbC particles formed at short inter-pass holding remained strongly pinned at small reloading strains and appeared to be dragged by rearranging MB walls. With increasing reloading strain, the fine precipitates became progressively released from the above walls. During reloading after increased holding time, the coarsened particles tended with their increased size to become increasingly detached from the MB walls already at a small strain. The precipitate-free MB wall segments rearranged during straining to maintain their crystallographic alignment, while the detached precipitates followed the sample shape change and rotated towards the compression plane. The MB wall rearrangement generally occurred through cooperative migration of the corresponding dislocation networks.

Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) was used to probe piezoelectric vibrations and local conductivity in CaCu 3Ti 4O 12 (CCTO) ceramics at room temperature. Piezoelectric contrast was observed on the polished surfaces of CCTO in both vertical (out-of-plane) and lateral (in-plane) modes and depended on the grain orientation varying in sign and amplitude. The piezoelectric contrast is shown to be controlled by the electrical bias (local poling) and displayed a ferroelectric-like reversible hysteresis accompanied with a change of the phase of piezoelectric signal. Flexoelectric effect (strain-gradient-induced polarization) due to surface relaxation was invoked to explain the observed contrast inside the grains. © 2010 Materials Research Society.

As the demand for miniature products and components continues to increase, the need for manufacturing processes to provide these products and components has also increased. To meet this need, successful macroscale processes are being scaled down and applied at the microscale. Unfortunately, many challenges have been experienced when directly scaling down macro processes. Initially, frictional effects were believed to be the largest challenge encountered. However, in recent studies it has been found that the greatest challenge encountered has been with size effects. Size effect is a broad term that largely refers to the thickness of the material being formed and how this thickness directly affects the product dimensions and manufacturability. At the microscale, the thickness becomes critical due to the reduced number of grains. When surface contact between the forming tools and the material blanks occur at the macroscale, there is enough material (hundreds of layers of material grains) across the blank thickness to compensate for material flow and the effect of grain orientation. At the microscale, there may be under 10 grains across the blank thickness. With a decreased amount of grains across the thickness, the influence of the grain size, shape and orientation is significant. Any material defects (either natural occurring or ones that occur as a result of the material preparation) have a significant role in altering the forming potential. To date, various micro metal forming and micro materials testing equipment setups have been constructed at the Michigan Tech lab. Initially, the research focus was to create a micro deep drawing setup to potentially build micro sensor encapsulation housings. The research focus shifted to micro metal materials testing equipment setups. These include the construction and testing of the following setups: a micro mechanical bulge test, a micro sheet tension test (testing micro tensile bars), a micro strain analysis (with the use of optical lithography and chemical etching) and a micro sheet hydroforming bulge test. Recently, the focus has shifted to study a micro tube hydroforming process. The intent is to target fuel cells, medical, and sensor encapsulation applications. While the tube hydroforming process is widely understood at the macroscale, the microscale process also offers some significant challenges in terms of size effects. Current work is being conducted in applying direct current to enhance micro tube hydroforming formability. Initially, adding direct current to various metal forming operations has shown some phenomenal results. The focus of current research is to determine the validity of this process.
