Gingival metastases are infrequent and invariably associated with a widespread disease and a poor prognosis. Because of their unremarkable clinical appearance, they can be difficult to distinguish from more common gingival hyperplastic or reactive lesions, such as pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, and peripheral ossifying granuloma. We are reporting here an unusual case of a 36-year-old man with a mixed testicular germ cell tumor presenting as a metastatic pure choriocarcinoma involving the maxillary gingiva, extending from the first left premolar to the left second maxillary molar, mimicking a 'benign looking' gingival mass. Gingival metastases may be the first manifestation of a widespread metastatic disease and therefore particular attention must be paid to gingival lesions associated with atypical clinical symptoms and/or signs.

Background. Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a rare family of mesenchymal tumors arising in a wide array of anatomic locations and characterized by coexpression of melanocytic and muscle markers. The uterus accounts for around one-fourth of the overall PEComa cases reported in the literature. Methods. We report a case of PEComa of the uterus with multiple malignancy features. Results. A uterine mass suspect for leiomyosarcoma was found in a 53-year-old woman with post-menopausal bleeding. Total hysterectomy and bilateral adnexectomy was performed. The tumor measured 7 cm in diameter, was unique, well-circumscribed, nodular, and whiteyellow without haemorrhage or necrosis. Microscopically, two populations of cells could be seen: small fusiform cells growing in fascicles resembling a smooth muscle tumor, and large epithelioid cells with abundant pale vacuolated cytoplasm growing in a diffuse pattern. Cytologic atypias were marked and mitoses numerous and often atypical in the second component. The tumor infiltrated into the myometrium with lymphovascular invasion. Immunostains showed positivity for MelanA, HMB45, smooth muscle actin, CD10, TFE3 and cathepsin K. Conclusions. The authors report the case of a giant cell tumor of the frontal sinus in a 54-year-old male patient. This tumor location is rare, and this is the third case reported in the literature with radiographic documentation and histopathological confirmation. The patient underwent surgery, with curettage of frontal sinus and placement of a prosthesis. He died because a voluntary abrupt discontinuation of corticosteroids.

Les tumeurs des cellules de la granulosa (GCTs) sont des tumeurs avec un potentiel malin ayant tendance à récidiver, provoquant ainsi la mort dans 80% des cas de stade avancé consécutif à une rechute. Bien que les GCTs représentent 5% des tumeurs ovariennes, peu d’études ont évalué les protocoles de traitement adjuvant pour la maladie avancée ou récurrente. Notre but était d’évaluer l’efficacité de la voie de signalisation du facteur de croissance de l’endothélium vasculaire A (VEGFA) comme cible pour le traitement de la GCT utilisant le modèle murin transgénique Ptentm1Hwu/tm1Hwu; Ctnnb1tm1Mmt/+; Amhr2tm3(cre)Bhr/+ (PCA) qui reproduit le stade avancé de la maladie humaine. Un anticorps anti-VEGFA a été administré une fois par semaine par voie intrapéritonéale (IP) à partir de 3 semaines d’âge. La thérapie anti-VEGFA a permis une réduction de la taille des tumeurs à 6 semaines d’âge (p<0.05) et une prolongation de la survie des animaux traités, lorsque comparé aux animaux contrôles. L’analyse des GCTs a montré une réduction significative de la prolifération cellulaire (p<0.05) et de la densité microvasculaire (p<0.01) mais aucune différence significative n’a été détectée dans l’apoptose cellulaire. p44/p42 MAPK, un effecteur de la signalisation pour le récepteur 2 de VEGFA (VEGFR2) associé à la prolifération cellulaire, était moins activé dans les tumeurs traitées (p<0.05). Par contre, l’activation d’AKT, un effecteur impliqué dans la survie cellulaire, était similaire d’un groupe à l’autre. Ces résultats suggèrent que l’anticorps anti-VEGFA réduit la prolifération cellulaire et la densité microvasculaire chez les souris PCA par inhibition de la voie de signalisation VEGFR2-MAPK, inhibant ainsi la croissance tumorale. En conclusion, l’efficacité de la thérapie anti- VEGFA mérite d’être évaluée en essais contrôlés randomisés pour le traitement des GCTs chez l’homme.

El tumor de células granulares (tumor de Abrikossoff) es una neoplasia benigna en un 98% de casos. Su presentación es escasa y la estirpe celular del tumor es controvertida; sin embargo, la detección positiva de proteína S-100 sugiere un origen neural. Se reporta el caso de una paciente de 16 años de edad con diagnóstico histopatológico de tumor de células granulares en el estudio de espécimen de resección quirúrgica de nódulo lingual.

Mast cell tumor (MCT) is one of the most prevalent neoplasms that affect skin and soft tissue in dogs. Because mast cell tumors present a great variety of clinical appearance and behavior, their treatment becomes a challenge. Trichostatin A (TSA), an antifungal antibiotic, has shown inhibitory effects on the proliferation and induction of apoptosis in various types of cancer cells. In order to evaluate the potential of trichostatin A as a therapeutic drug, cells of grade 3 MCT were cultured and treated with concentrations of 1 nM to 400 nM of TSA. MTT assay and trypan blue exclusion assays were performed to estimate cell growth and cell viability, and cell cycle analysis was evaluated. TSA treatment showed a reduction in numbers of viable cells and an increase of cell death by apoptosis. The cell cycle analysis showed an increase of hypodiploid cells and a reduction of G0/G1 and G2/M -phases. According to these results, trichostatin A may be an interesting potential chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of canine MCT.

Approximately 10% of patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) develop other neoplasms, either synchronously or metachronously. In this report we describe coexistence of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor and a hepatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) in a 51-year-old woman with no evidence of tuberous sclerosis. A subcapsular hepatic nodule (0.8 cm in diameter) was found during surgery for symptomatic gastric neoplasm (15 cm in diameter) arising from the lesser curvature. Both tumors revealed histomorphological and immunohistochemical features confirming a diagnosis of a small incidental hepatic PEComa and a high risky extramural gastric GIST, respectively. The patient remained disease-free 25 mo after surgery with no evidence of tumor recurrence or new neoplasms. To our knowledge, this is the first report of PEComa in a patient with GIST. Hepatic lesions detected synchronously or metachronously in patients with GISTs may represent histogenetically distinct lesions and should be sampled to confirm or exclude metastatic GISTs. The authors report a rare case of bilateral Leydig cell tumor in a noncryptorchid stallion, describing the gross. and microscopic findings. An 8-year-old Appaloosa stallion was examined for a unilateral enlargement of the testis associated with discomfort during palpation and signs of colic. General health conditions were good. Fine-needle aspiration cytology of the testis provided the diagnosis of bilateral Leydig cell tumor. Bilateral orchiectomy was performed and the testes were submitted to histopathologic examination that confirmed the diagnosis of Leydig cell tumor.

BACKGROUND: Mast cell tumor, one of the most common skin tumors in dogs, may also be found in visceral sites (mainly spleen and liver). When a visceral mast cell tumor is present, neoplastic mast cells may be found in any effusion secondary to the tumor. Therefore, the diagnosis may be made by cytologic analysis of the effusion. CASE: An 8-year-old, spayed, female Siberian husky presented with a peritoneal effusion secondary to a visceral mast cell tumor. Seven months earlier, the dog had presented with a cutaneous nodule diagnosed as a well-differentiated mast cell tumor. The peritoneal fluid was classified as a transudate. Numerous neoplastic mast cells were found in the effusion. Although the mast cell tumor presented with characteristics of the well-differentiated tumor, its biologic behavior was that of a malignant tumor. CONCLUSION: Care should be taken to evaluate the prognosis of mast cell tumors in dogs since their biologic behavior is extremely variable.

Little is known about neoplasia in the jaguar (Panthera onca), the largest American feline. A captive black jaguar was diagnosed at necropsy with a mastocytic form of visceral mast cell tumor similar to that which occurs in domestic cats. This animal had no previous clinical disease and died during anesthesia for a routine dental treatment.

The juxtaglomerular cell tumor is a cause of secondary hypertension in adults. A 35-year-old female patient suffering from hypertension and low serum potassium had a 3 × 3 cm solid mass at the lower pole of left kidney diagnosed by abdominal sonography. Partial nephrectomy was performed and the postoperatory was uneventful. Normalization of blood pressure was observed within the first month.

This case series describes three unreported cases of an uncommon benign neoplasm named Abrikossoff's tumour or granular cell tumour (GCT). This mesenchymal neoplasm apparently arises from neural or Schwann cell origin with benign and malignant forms. All cases presented here were unique nodules on oral mucosa, coming out from the connective tissue, and occurring in women with age ranging from 30 to 42 years. The histological aspects of the GCT showed large granular cells arranged in groups and nests of connective tissue separating pseudoepitheliomatous overlying surface. This feature can possibly be misunderstood with squamous cell carcinoma. The differentiation between malignant and benign GCT is evaluated by the presence of metastases which is considered the only reliable criterion for malignancy. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Craniopharyngiomas and germ cell tumors (GCT) may affect the pituitary-hypothalamic region during childhood. Although different in origin, their clinical and radiological features may be similar. In this article we present a 5-year-old girl with clinical and radiological findings (computer tomography calcification) that were initially considered as craniopharyngioma. However clinical outcome, blood and cerebral spinal fluid tumoral markers, and results from anatomopathology and immunohistochemistry disclosed a mixed GCT. This case report highlights that some clinical features and radiological findings of pituitary-hypothalamic tumors may be misdiagnosed as craniopharyngioma mainly when there is a mature teratoma with cartilaginous tissue differentiation. Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare, aggressive, malignant neoplasm usually present with the widespread abdominal serosal involvement and affects mainly adolescents and young adults. When presenting within visceral organs, as kidney, the diagnosis of DSRCT imposes significant difficulties. We present a case of primary DSRCT of the kidney in a 10-year-old boy mimicking clinically and pathologically Wilms tumor. The tumor showed morphologic and immunohistochemical features of DSRCT and the presence of the Ewing sarcoma and Wilm tumor 1 fusion transcripts resulting from the t(11;22) (p13;q12) reciprocal translocation. DSRCT should be considered in the differential diagnosis of Wilm tumor and other small blue-round cell tumors of the kidney. © 2009 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
