The duration of occurrence of two morphological forms of Keratella cochlearis varied seasonally in Lake Donghu, a shallow eutrophic lake in China. The total lengths of both K cochlearis tecta and K cochlearis cochlearis were negatively correlated with the water temperature. Total length of K cochlearis tecta may also have been influenced by the degree of eutrophication or available food.

Notholca dongtingensis n.sp. was found in the second largest lake of China, Dongting Lake. It is related to Notholca labis Gosse, 1887 and N. kozhovi Vassilijewa & Kutikova, 1969. Its main distinguishing taxonomic features are a square-oval lorica, very short anterior spines, anterior lateral spines curving outwards and protrusile posterior margin of the ventral plate.

Pain response may be altered in infants born very preterm owing to repeated exposure to procedures in the neonatal intensive care unit. Findings have been inconsistent in studies of behavioral and cardiac responses to brief pain in preterm versus full-term infants following neonatal intensive care unit discharge. To our knowledge, cortisol reactivity to pain has not been compared in preterm and full-term infants. We examined pain reactivity to immunization in preterm and full-term infants.

We present a pilot study that uses the radiocarbon (∆14C) method to determine the source of carbon buried in the surface sediment of Lough Erne, a humic, alkaline lake in northwest Ireland. ∆14C, δ13C and δ15N values were measured from phytoplankton, dissolved inorganic, dissolved organic and particulate organic carbon. A novel radiocarbon method, Stepped Combustion1 was used to estimate the degree of the burial of terrestrial carbon in surface sediment. The ∆14C values of the low temperature fractions were comparable to algal ∆14C, while the high temperature fractions were 14C-depleted (older than bulk sediment). The ∆14C end-member model indicated that ~64% of carbon in surface sediment was derived from detrital terrestrial carbon. The use of ∆14C in conjunction with stepped combustion allows the quantification of the pathways of terrestrial carbon in the system, which has implications for regional and global carbon burial.

The current dissertation examined role differences in the perception of injustice; specifically, differences in how victims and offenders respond to a situation that they both agree is unfair. Past research has demonstrated that role affects reactions to transgressions and injustice, including recall of transgressions, and attributions of blame and responsibility (e.g., Baumeister, Stillwell, & Wotman, 1990; Mikula, Athenstaedt, Heschgl, & Heimgartner, 1998). However, to date, little work has examined role differences in perceptions of why an event is perceived as unfair (i.e., how an injustice is framed) or how justice should be restored. These were the perceptions I focused on in the present thesis. I also examined potential concerns that may motivate victims' and offenders' justice reactions, as well as the potential interaction between role and relationship quality in predicting justice reactions. In Studies 1 and 2, several of the predicted role differences in concerns were found; however, these did not lead to the expected differences in framing and restoration. In Study 1, using a vignette methodology, I found differences primarily in how victims and offenders believed justice should be restored. Overall, the significant role effects showed an accommodating response pattern (e.g., offenders proposed punishment more than did victims and neutral observers, whereas victims recommended minimal compensation more than did offenders and neutral observers), inconsistent with previous research and my hypotheses. Study 2, which employed a sample of romantic couples, substantiated the accommodating pattern found in Study 1. Study 3, which sampled a broader range of relationships, also showed i \ examples of accommodating reactions. In addition, Study 3 provided some support for the hypothesized interaction between role and relationship quality, such that responses were more accommodating as relationship quality increased. For example, offenders more strongly endorsed methods of restoration such as offender apology and recognition of the relationship with increasing relationship quality. Overall, the results from this dissertation support the general notion that victims and offenders respond to injustice differently, and, in-line with previous research on other justice-related responses (e.g., Mikula et at, 1998), suggest that victims and offenders show an other-serving, accommodating tendency in justice reactions when relationship quality is high.

La leucémie myéloïde aigüe (LMA) est la forme de leucémie la plus fréquente chez l’adulte au Canada. Bien que de nombreux réarrangements chromosomiques récurrents aient été identifiés chez les patients LMA, près de la moitié des cas présentent un caryotype normal (LMA-CN). L’étude de la LMA-CN in vitro est rendue difficile par le fait que la survie des cellules primaires de patients est défectueuse sur le long terme et que les lignées cellulaires leucémiques ont un caryotype hautement anormal. En 2009, Munker et son équipe ont établi une nouvelle lignée cellulaire, CG-SH, ayant la particularité d’avoir un caryotype normal. L’objectif principal de ce projet d’étude est de caractériser plus en détail ce nouveau modèle d’étude. Nous avons identifié l’ensemble des variants génétiques présents dans CG-SH grâce au séquençage du génome entier. Les variants susceptibles de participer à la leucémogénèse ont été isolés, tels que des insertions détectées dans EZH2 et GATA2, et de nombreux variants faux-sens détectés dans des gènes pertinents pour la LMA. Nous avons montré que les cellules CG-SH sont sensibles à l’effet prolifératif d’une combinaison de cytokines, qui agissent sur le comportement des cellules en modifiant l’expression des gènes associés à la régulation de la prolifération, de l’apoptose et de la différentiation. De plus, les cytokines diminuent le taux de nécrose des cellules en culture sur le court terme. La présente étude a permis d’approfondir notre connaissance sur les caractéristiques moléculaires de la lignée cellulaire CG-SH, un nouveau modèle d’étude in vitro de la LMA-CN.

Este libro explora un fenómeno que se repite en algunos textos del escritor argentino Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986). Está compuesto por nueve capítulos, que corresponden al análisis de la reescritura de nueve distintas propuestas filosóficas. Las propuestas están cobijadas bajo la misma doctrina: el idealismo. Es un libro que se escribe para validar la propuesta de un método de lectura que cuenta a la vez con una dosis de ingenio y con planteamientos rigurosos, permitiendo así un tipo de análisis que, siendo sistemático, es también lúdico, conservando de este modo las funciones fundamentales de la literatura. No pocas conjeturas ha habido acerca de las intenciones de Borges o de sus creencias.El texto propone análisis novedosos de los cuentos de Borges y reevalúa y critica algunos análisis existentes elaborados por diferentes comentaristas. El tipo de análisis propuesto se haría extensivo a otros cuentos de Borges y a otros autores. Es un texto que se esfuerza por tomar distancia de las interpretaciones existentes que hay sobre la obra de Borges y de proponer nuevas lecturas siguiendo un cierto rigor interpretativo. Las conclusiones finales sitúan la propuesta del libro en el centro de debates contemporáneos de la literatura como la muerte del autor, los límites de la interpretación y la intertextualidad. La misma propuesta se encarga de establecer su relación y su distancia con los comentaristas reconocidos y se aparta de propuestas interpretativas pasadas de moda. A variação espacial e temporal de rotíferos foi analisada em um reservatório pequeno, raso e eutrófico, com intensas florações de algas Cyanobacteria, em sete pontos de amostragem durante 17 meses (março/2002 a julho/2003). Foram identificados 52 táxons em 16 famílias, sendo Brachionidade, Conochilidae, Synchaetidae, Lecanidae, Collothecidae, Trichocercidae e Gastropodidae as mais frequentes. Collotheca sp. foi abundante no inverno (período seco), enquanto Conochilus coenobasis Skorikov, 1914 e Keratella cochlearis Gosse, 1851 apresentaram baixas abundâncias. Brachionus mirus var. reductus (Koste, 1972), Filinia longiseta (Ehrenberg, 1834) e Keratella lenzi (Hauer, 1953) apresentaram picos de abundância no verão (período chuvoso), e Kellicottia bostonensis (Rousselet, 1908), Ploesoma truncatum (Levander, 1894), Polyarthra remata (Skorikov, 1896), Polyarthra vulgaris Carlin, 1943 e Ptygura sp. no inverno, entretanto, relacionados a chuvas atípicas. Diferenças significativas do número de táxons e da abundância total dos rotíferos ocorreram entre os meses amostrados. A análise de correspondência canônica explicou 46% da relação da abundância dos rotíferos e variáveis ambientais, correlacionados com a pluviosidade, nitrito, temperatura da água, nitrogênio orgânico, nitrato e temperatura do ar. Houve flutuações na abundância dos rotíferos um mês após oscilações na abundância do fitoplâncton. A maior parte das correlações entre as abundâncias de espécies de rotíferos e do fitoplâncton foi positiva. Alguns táxons como Filinia longiseta, Keratella lenzi e K. cochlearis apresentaram variação temporal definida e semelhante a outros reservatórios eutróficos. A ausência de padrões claros de distribuição em algumas espécies foi atribuída a hidrodinâmica do reservatório, o qual foi construído recentemente, e as condições climáticas adversas durante o período de estudo, como as chuvas intensas no inverno.

This study aimed to exploit bacterial artificial chromosomes (BAC) as large antigen-capacity DNA vaccines (BAC-VAC) against complex pathogens, such as herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). The 152-kbp HSV-1 genome recently has been cloned as an F-plasmid-based BAC in Escherichia coli (fHSV), which can efficiently produce infectious virus progeny upon transfection into mammalian cells. A safe modification of fHSV, fHSVΔpac, does not give rise to progeny virus because the signals necessary to package DNA into virions have been excluded. However, in mammalian cells fHSVΔpac DNA can still replicate, express the HSV-1 genes, cause cytotoxic effects, and produce virus-like particles. Because these functions mimic the lytic cycle of the HSV-1 infection, fHSVΔpac was expected to stimulate the immune system as efficiently as a modified live virus vaccine. To test this hypothesis, mice were immunized with fHSVΔpac DNA applied intradermally by gold-particle bombardment, and the immune responses were compared with those induced by infection with disabled infectious single cycle HSV-1. Immunization with either fHSVΔpac or disabled infectious single cycle HSV-1 induced the priming of HSV-1-specific cytotoxic T cells and the production of virus-specific antibodies and conferred protection against intracerebral injection of wild-type HSV-1 at a dose of 200 LD50. Protection probably was cell-mediated, as transfer of serum from immunized mice did not protect naive animals. We conclude that BAC-VACs per se, or in combination with genetic elements that support replicative amplification of the DNA in the cell nucleus, represent a useful new generation of DNA-based vaccination strategies for many viral and nonviral antigens.
