Chromotropic acid-formaldehyde reaction in strongly acidic media. The role of dissolved oxygen and replacement of concentrated sulphuric acid

The procedure for formaldehyde analysis recommended by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the Chromotropic acid spectrophotometric method, which is the one that uses concentrated sulphuric acid. In the present study the oxidation step associated with the aforementioned method for formaldehyde determination was investigated. Experimental evidence has been obtained indicating that when concentrated H2SO4 (18 mol l(-1)) is used (as in the NIOSH procedure) that acid is the oxidizing agent. on the other hand, oxidation through dissolved oxygen takes place when concentrated H2SO4 is replaced by concentrated hydrochloric (12 mol l(-1)) and phosphoric (14.7 mol l(-1)) acids as well as by diluted H2SO4 (9.4 mol l(-1)). Based on investigations concerning the oxidation step, a modified procedure was devised, in which the use of the potentially hazardous and corrosive concentrated H2SO4 was eliminated and advantageously replaced by a less harmful mixture of HCl and H2O2. An electrode of the second kind for aspirin determination in tablet formulations

This paper describes the construction of an electrode of the second kind, Pt\Hg\Hg-2(Salic)(2)\Graphite, sensitive to salicylate. This electrode responds to the salicylate ion with a sensivity of 58.66 mV/decade over the range 6.0x10(-4) - 1.0x10(-1) mol/l at pH 6.0 and an ionic strength of 0.500 - 3.00 mol/l, adjusted with NaClO4. The electrode is easily constructed, shows a fast response time, is low in cost, has excellent response stability, and has a lifetime greater than 18 months, which is much longer than those reported earlier for other systems. The influence of 10 different carboxylate and inorganic anions on the electrode response showed that there was negligible interference by most of these ions. It was used to determine aspirin in tablets (after hydrolysis of acetylsalicylic acid to salicylate) by means of the standard additions method. The results obtained using this electrode for aspirin determination, in three different samples of antithermic drugs, compared favorably with the results given by the British Pharmacopoeia method.

Health reforms in Latin America: processes and results

Two types of health reforms in Latin America are analysed: one based on insurance and service commodification and the one referred to the unified public systems of progressive governments. Health insurance with explicit service packages has not fulfilled their purposes of universal coverage, equal access to necessary health services and improvement of health conditions but has opened health as a field of profit making for insurance companies and private health providers. The national health services as a state obligation have developed territorialized health services and widened substantially timely access to the majority of the population. The adoption of an integrated and wide social policy has an impact on population well fare. It faces some problems derived from the old health systems and the power of the insurance and medical complex.
