This thesis presents analytical and numerical results from studies based on the multiple quantum well laser rate equation model. We address the problem of controlling chaos produced by direct modulation of laser diodes. We consider the delay feedback control methods for this purpose and study their performance using numerical simulation. Besides the control of chaos, control of other nonlinear effects such as quasiperiodicity and bistability using delay feedback methods are also investigated.A number of secure communication schemes based on synchronization of chaos semiconductor lasers have been successfully demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. The current investigations in these field include the study of practical issues on the implementations of such encryption schemes. We theoretically study the issues such as channel delay, phase mismatch and frequency detuning on the synchronization of chaos in directly modulated laser diodes. It would be helpful for designing and implementing chaotic encryption schemes using synchronization of chaos in modulated semiconductor lasers.

We present an experimental study on the generation of high-peak-power short optical pulses from a fully integrated master-oscillator power-amplifier emitting at 1.5 μm. High-peak-power (2.7 W) optical pulses with short duration (100 ps) have been generated by gain switching the master oscillator under optimized driving conditions. The static and dynamic characteristics of the device have been studied as a function of the driving conditions. The ripples appearing in the power-current characteristics under cw conditions have been attributed to mode hopping between the master oscillator resonant mode and the Fabry-Perot modes of the entire device cavity. Although compound cavity effects have been evidenced to affect the static and dynamic performance of the device, we have demonstrated that trains of single-mode short optical pulses at gigahertz frequencies can be conveniently generated in these devices.

Output bits from an optical logic cell present noise due to the type of technique used to obtain the Boolean functions of two input data bits. We have simulated the behavior of an optically programmable logic cell working with Fabry Perot-laser diodes of the same type employed in optical communications (1550nm) but working here as amplifiers. We will report in this paper a study of the bit noise generated from the optical non-linearity process allowing the Boolean function operation of two optical input data signals. Two types of optical logic cells will be analyzed. Firstly, a classical "on-off" behavior, with transmission operation of LD amplifier and, secondly, a more complicated configuration with two LD amplifiers, one working on transmission and the other one in reflection mode. This last configuration has nonlinear behavior emulating SEED-like properties. In both cases, depending on the value of a "1" input data signals to be processed, a different logic function can be obtained. Also a CW signal, known as control signal, may be apply to fix the type of logic function. The signal to noise ratio will be analyzed for different parameters, as wavelength signals and the hysteresis cycles regions associated to the device, in relation with the signals power level applied. With this study we will try to obtain a better understanding of the possible effects present on an optical logic gate with Laser Diodes.

Polymer optical fibre (POF) is a relatively new and novel technology that presents an innovative approach for ultrasonic endoscopic applications. Currently, piezo electric transducers are the typical detectors of choice, albeit possessing a limited bandwidth due to their resonant nature and a sensitivity that decreases proportionally to their size. Optical fibres provide immunity from electromagnetic interference and POF in particular boasts more suitable physical characteristics than silica optical fibre. The most important of these are lower acoustic impedance, a reduced Young's Modulus and a higher acoustic sensitivity than single-mode silica fibre at both 1 MHz and 10 MHz. POF therefore offers an interesting alternative to existing technology. Intrinsic fibre structures such as Bragg gratings and Fabry-Perot cavities may be inscribed into the fibre core using UV lasers. These gratings are a modulation of the refractive index of the fibre core and provide the advantages of high reflectivity, customisable bandwidth and point detection. We present a compact in fibre ultrasonic point detector based upon a POF Bragg grating (POFBG) sensor. We demonstrate that the detector is capable of leaving a laboratory environment by using connectorised fibre sensors and make a case for endoscopic ultrasonic detection through use of a mounting structure that better mimics the environment of an endoscopic probe. We measure the effects of water immersion upon POFBGs and analyse the ultrasonic response for 1, 5 and 10 MHz.

Lithium-ion batteries provide high energy density while being compact and light-weight and are the most pervasive energy storage technology powering portable electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablet PCs. Considerable efforts have been made to develop new electrode materials with ever higher capacity, while being able to maintain long cycle life. A key challenge in those efforts has been characterizing and understanding these materials during battery operation. While it is generally accepted that the repeated strain/stress cycles play a role in long-term battery degradation, the detailed mechanisms creating these mechanical effects and the damage they create still remain unclear. Therefore, development of techniques which are capable of capturing in real time the microstructural changes and the associated stress during operation are crucial for unravelling lithium-ion battery degradation mechanisms and further improving lithium-ion battery performance. This dissertation presents the development of two microelectromechanical systems sensor platforms for in situ characterization of stress and microstructural changes in thin film lithium-ion battery electrodes, which can be leveraged as a characterization platform for advancing battery performance. First, a Fabry-Perot microelectromechanical systems sensor based in situ characterization platform is developed which allows simultaneous measurement of microstructural changes using Raman spectroscopy in parallel with qualitative stress changes via optical interferometry. Evolutions in the microstructure creating a Raman shift from 145 cm−1 to 154 cm−1 and stress in the various crystal phases in the LixV2O5 system are observed, including both reversible and irreversible phase transitions. Also, a unique way of controlling electrochemically-driven stress and stress gradient in lithium-ion battery electrodes is demonstrated using the Fabry-Perot microelectromechanical systems sensor integrated with an optical measurement setup. By stacking alternately stressed layers, the average stress in the stacked electrode is greatly reduced by 75% compared to an unmodified electrode. After 2,000 discharge-charge cycles, the stacked electrodes retain only 83% of their maximum capacity while unmodified electrodes retain 91%, illuminating the importance of the stress gradient within the electrode. Second, a buckled membrane microelectromechanical systems sensor is developed to enable in situ characterization of quantitative stress and microstructure evolutions in a V2O5 lithium-ion battery cathode by integrating atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Using dual-mode measurements in the voltage range of the voltage range of 2.8V – 3.5V, both the induced stress (~ 40 MPa) and Raman intensity changes due to lithium cycling are observed. Upon lithium insertion, tensile stress in the V2O5 increases gradually until the α- to ε-phase and ε- to δ-phase transitions occur. The Raman intensity change at 148 cm−1 shows that the level of disorder increases during lithium insertion and progressively recovers the V2O5 lattice during lithium extraction. Results are in good agreement with the expected mechanical behavior and disorder change in V2O5, highlighting the potential of microelectromechanical systems as enabling tools for advanced scientific investigations. The work presented here will be eventually utilized for optimization of thin film battery electrode performance by achieving fundamental understanding of how stress and microstructural changes are correlated, which will also provide valuable insight into a battery performance degradation mechanism.

We obtained new Fabry-Perot data cubes and derived velocity fields, monochromatic, and velocity dispersion maps for 28 galaxies in the Hickson compact groups 37, 40, 47, 49, 54, 56, 68, 79, and 93. We also derived rotation curves for 9 of the studied galaxies, 6 of which are strongly asymmetric. Combining these new data with previously published 2D kinematic maps of compact group galaxies, we investigated the differences between the kinematic and morphological position angles for a sample of 46 galaxies. We find that one third of the unbarred compact group galaxies have position angle misalignments between the stellar and gaseous components. This and the asymmetric rotation curves are clear signatures of kinematic perturbations, probably because of interactions among compact group galaxies. A comparison between the B-band Tully-Fisher relation for compact group galaxies and for the GHASP field-galaxy sample shows that, despite the high fraction of compact group galaxies with asymmetric rotation curves, these lay on the TF relation defined by galaxies in less dense environments, although with more scatter. This agrees with previous results, but now confirmed for a larger sample of 41 galaxies. We confirm the tendency for compact group galaxies at the low-mass end of the Tully-Fisher relation (HCG 49b, 89d, 96c, 96d, and 100c) to have either a magnitude that is too bright for its mass (suggesting brightening by star formation) and/or a low maximum rotational velocity for its luminosity (suggesting tidal stripping). These galaxies are outside the Tully Fisher relation at the 1 sigma level, even when the minimum acceptable values of inclinations are used to compute their maximum velocities. Including such galaxies with nu < 100 km s(-1) in the determination of the zero point and slope of the compact group B-band Tully-Fisher relation would strongly change the fit, making it different from the relation for field galaxies, which has to be kept in mind when studying scaling relations of interacting galaxies, especially at high redshifts.

This study presents the mass distribution for a sample of 18 late-type galaxies in nine Hickson compact groups. We used Ha rotation curves (RCs) from high-resolution two-dimensional velocity fields of Fabry-Perot observations and the J-band photometry from the Two Micron All Sky Survey, in order to determine the dark halo and the visible matter distributions. The study compares two halo density profiles, an isothermal core-like distribution, and a cuspy one. We also compare their visible and dark matter distributions with those of galaxies belonging to cluster and field galaxies coming from two samples: 40 cluster galaxies of Barnes et al. and 35 field galaxies of Spano et al. The central halo surface density is found to be constant with respect to the total absolute magnitude similar to what is found for the isolated galaxies. This suggests that the halo density is independent of galaxy type and environment. We have found that core-like density profiles better fit the RCs than cuspy-like ones. No major differences have been found between field, cluster, and compact group galaxies with respect to their dark halo density profiles.

Context. Compact groups of galaxies are entities that have high densities of galaxies and serve as laboratories to study galaxy interactions, intergalactic star formation and galaxy evolution. Aims. The main goal of this study is to search for young objects in the intragroup medium of seven compact groups of galaxies: HCG 2, 7, 22, 23, 92, 100 and NGC 92 as well as to evaluate the stage of interaction of each group. Methods. We used Fabry-Perot velocity fields and rotation curves together with GALEX NUV and FUV images and optical R-band and HI maps. Results. (i) HCG 7 and HCG 23 are in early stages of interaction; (ii) HCG 2 and HCG 22 are mildly interacting; and (iii) HCG 92, HCG 100 and NGC 92 are in late stages of evolution. We find that all three evolved groups contain populations of young blue objects in the intragroup medium, consistent with ages < 100 Myr, of which several are younger than < 10 Myr. We also report the discovery of a tidal dwarf galaxy candidate in the tail of NGC 92. These three groups, besides containing galaxies that have peculiar velocity fields, also show extended HI tails. Conclusions. Our results indicate that the advanced stage of evolution of a group, together with the presence of intragroup HI clouds, may lead to star formation in the intragroup medium. A table containing all intergalactic HII regions and tidal dwarf galaxies confirmed to date is appended.

Over the last decades, anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguides (ARROW) have been used in different integrated optics applications. In this type of waveguide, light confinement is partially achieved through an anti-resonant reflection. In this work, the simulation, fabrication and characterization of ARROW waveguides using dielectric films deposited by a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique, at low temperatures(similar to 300 degrees C), are presented. Silicon oxynitride (SiO(x)N(y)) films were used as core and second cladding layers and amorphous hydrogenated silicon carbide(a-SiC:H) films as first cladding layer. Furthermore, numerical simulations were performed using homemade routines based on two computational methods: the transfer matrix method (TMM) for the determination of the optimum thickness of the Fabry-Perot layers; and the non-uniform finite difference method (NU-FDM) for 2D design and determination of the maximum width that yields single-mode operation. The utilization of a silicon carbide anti-resonant layer resulted in low optical attenuations, which is due to the high refractive index difference between the core and this layer. Finally, for comparison purposes, optical waveguides using titanium oxide (TiO(2)) as the first ARROW layer were also fabricated and characterized.

The free running linewidth of an external cavity grating feedback diode laser is on the order of a few megahertz and is limited by the mechanical and acoustic vibrations of the external cavity. Such frequency fluctuations can be removed by electronic feedback. We present a hybrid stabilisation technique that uses both a Fabry-Perot confocal cavity and an atomic resonance to achieve excellent short and long term frequency stability. The system has been shown to reduce the laser linewidth of an external cavity diode laser by an order of magnitude to 140 kHz, while limiting frequency excursions to 60 kHz relative to an absolute reference over periods of several hours. The scheme also presents a simple way to frequency offset two lasers many gigahertz apart which should find a use in atom cooling experiments, where hyperfine ground-state frequency separations are often required.

We study the interaction between polarized terahertz (THz) radiation and micro-structured large-area graphene in transmission geometry. In order to efficiently couple the radiation into the two-dimensional material, a lateral periodic patterning of a closed graphene sheet by intercalation doping into stripes is chosen. We observe unequal transmittance of the radiation polarized parallel and perpendicular to the stripes. The relative contrast, partly enhanced by Fabry-Perot oscillations reaches 20 %. The effect even increases up to 50 % when removing graphene stripes in analogy to a wire grid polarizer. The polarization dependence is analyzed in a large frequency range from < 80 GHz to 3 THz, including the plasmon-polariton resonance. The results are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations based on the electronic energy spectrum of graphene and the electrodynamics of the patterned structure

It is found that crystals of molecular nanomagnets exhibit enhanced magnetic relaxation when placed inside a resonant cavity. A strong dependence of the magnetization curve on the geometry of the cavity has been observed, providing indirect evidence of the coherent microwave radiation by the crystals. A similar dependence has been found for a crystal placed between the Fabry-Perot superconducting mirrors.
