Genetic variation at microsatellite markers was used to quantify genetic structure and mating behavior in a severely fragmented population of the wind-pollinated, wind-dispersed temperate tree Fraxinus excelsior in a deforested catchment in Scotland. Remnants maintain high levels of genetic diversity, comparable with those reported for continuous populations in southeastern Europe, and show low interpopulation differentiation (Theta = 0.080), indicating that historical gene exchange has not been limited (Nm = 3.48). We estimated from seeds collected from all trees producing fruits in three of five remnants that F. excelsior is predominantly outcrossing (t(m). = 0.971 +/- 0.028). Use of a neighborhood model approach to describe the relative contribution of local and long-distance pollen dispersal indicates that pollen gene flow into each of the three remnants is extensive (46-95%) and pollen dispersal has two components. The first is very localized and restricted to tens of meters around the mother trees. The second is a long-distance component with dispersal occurring over several kilometers. Effective dispersal distances, accounting for the distance and directionality to mother trees of sampled pollen donors, average 328 m and are greater than values reported for a continuous population. These results suggest that the opening of the landscape facilitates airborne pollen movement and may alleviate the expected detrimental genetic effects of fragmentation.

2011-ben műszeres vizsgálatokat végeztünk jó várostűrő Fraxinus excelsior ’Westhof’s Glorie’ fajtáján, Budapest két, különböző forgalmi terheltségű helyszínén, a közlekedésileg forgalmas Andrássy úton (WGS84 N47°30’36,1” E19°04’14,7”) és a kertvárosi jellegű Ménesi úton (WGS84: N47°28’52,0” E19°02’21,8”). A vizsgált növények sztómakonduktanciáját (gs), transzspirációját (E), nettó CO2 asszimilációját (A) és a fotoszintetikusan aktív besugárzás (PAR) mértékét infravörös gáz analizátor (IRGA) rendszerű LCi készülékkel mértük. A méréssorozatot augusztusban reggel 6 órától este 20 óráig, szeptemberben reggel 8 órától délután 18 óráig végeztük, két órás periódusokban ismételve. Ebből arra következtetünk, hogy a fák levélzete rugalmasan alkalmazkodik a rendelkezésre álló magasabb CO2 koncentrációhoz, viszont a nagyobb transzspiráció megnöveli ebben a környezetben a fák vízigényét.

Soil respiration (SR) is a major component of ecosystems' carbon cycles and represents the second largest CO2 flux in the terrestrial biosphere. Soil temperature is considered to be the primary abiotic control on SR, whereas soil moisture is the secondary control factor. However, soil moisture can become the dominant control on SR in very wet or dry conditions. Determining the trigger that makes soil moisture as the primary control factor of SR will provide a deeper understanding on how SR changes under the projected future increase in droughts. Specific objectives of this study were (1) to investigate the seasonal variations and the relationship between SR and both soil temperature and moisture in a Mediterranean riparian forest along a groundwater level gradient; (2) to determine soil moisture thresholds at which SR is controlled by soil moisture rather than by temperature; (3) to compare SR responses under different tree species present in a Mediterranean riparian forest (Alnus glutinosa, Populus nigra and Fraxinus excelsior). Results showed that the heterotrophic soil respiration rate, groundwater level and 30 cm integral soil moisture (SM30) decreased significantly from the riverside moving uphill and showed a pronounced seasonality. SR rates showed significant differences between tree species, with higher SR for P. nigra and lower SR for A. glutinosa. The lower threshold of soil moisture was 20 and 17% for heterotrophic and total SR, respectively. Daily mean SR rate was positively correlated with soil temperature when soil moisture exceeded the threshold, with Q10 values ranging from 1.19 to 2.14; nevertheless, SR became decoupled from soil temperature when soil moisture dropped below these thresholds.
