Environmental constraints imposed on hydropoweroperation are usually given in the form of minimum environmental flows and maximum and minimum rates of change of flows, or ramp rates. One solution proposed to mitigate the environmental impact caused by the flows discharged by a hydropower plant while reducing the economic impact of the above-mentioned constraints consists in building a re-regulationreservoir, or afterbay, downstream of the power plant. Adding pumpingcapability between the re-regulationreservoir and the main one could contribute both to reducing the size of the re-regulationreservoir, with the consequent environmental improvement, and to improving the economic feasibility of the project, always fulfilling the environmental constraints imposed to hydropoweroperation. The objective of this paper is studying the contribution of a re-regulationreservoir to fulfilling the environmental constraints while reducing the economic impact of said constraints. For that purpose, a revenue-driven optimization model based on mixed integer linear programming is used. Additionally, the advantages of adding pumpingcapability are analysed. In order to illustrate the applicability of the methodology, a case study based on a real hydropower plant is presented

Supported metals are traditionally prepared by impregnating a support material with the metal precursor solution, followed by reduction in hydrogen at elevated temperatures. In this study, a polymeric support has been considered. Polypyrrole (PPy) has been chemically synthesized using FeCl3 as a doping agent, and it has been impregnated with a H2PtCl6 solution to prepare a catalyst precursor. The restricted thermal stability of polypyrrole does not allow using the traditional reduction in hydrogen at elevated temperature, and chemical reduction under mild conditions using sodium borohydride implies environmental concerns. Therefore, cold RF plasma has been considered an environmentally friendly alternative. Ar plasma leads to a more effective reduction of platinum ions in the chloroplatinic complex anchored onto the polypyrrole chain after impregnation than reduction with sodium borohydride, as has been evidenced by XPS. The increase of RF power enhanced the effectiveness of the Ar plasma treatment. A homogeneous distribution of platinum nanoparticles has been observed by TEM after the reduction treatment with plasma. The Pt/polypyrrol catalyst reduced by Ar plasma at 200 watts effectively catalyzed the aqueous reduction of nitrates with H2 to yield N2, with a very low selectivity to undesired nitrites and ammonium by-products.

The direct alkylation of indoles using KOH and alcohols, as initial source of the electrophile, under solvent-free conditions is a safe and environmentally benign strategy for selective modification of these structures at the C3-position, without using hazardous and difficult to handle bromide or iodide derivatives or toxic and expensive transition metal catalysts. The protocol shows a broad scope, including halogenated indoles and secondary alcohols.

Two series of mesoporous hybrid iron(III) complex–silica aerogels were prepared in one-pot synthesis by using the sol–gel coordination chemistry approach. The use of the ligands 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyltrimethoxysilane and 2-(diphenylphosphino)ethyltriethoxysilane, both with terminal triethoxysilyl groups, were used to incorporate metal complexes in situ into the framework of silica, through their co-condensation with a silicon alkoxide during the aerogel formation. This methodology yielded optically translucent hybrid mesoporous gels with homogeneous metal incorporation and excellent textural properties. The catalytic performance of these materials was tested in the direct amination of allylic alcohols in water as a target reaction, with activities comparable or even higher than those corresponding to the homogeneous iron(III) complex. Furthermore, these catalysts were stable and maintained their catalytic activity after six reaction cycles.

The purpose of this study is to describe travelers that have indicated they are willing to stay in green hotel in order to better understand the market segment. There is very little knowledge about these types of travelers, thus making it difficult for hoteliers to know how to create marketing campaigns that target them. Data were collected via an online survey company. Behavior characteristics provided a more distinguishing profile of the traveler than did demographics or psychographics. Most travelers were willing to pay the same amount for a green hotel as a traditional hotel. Implications, future research, and limitations are discussed.

Solid state engineered materials have proven to be useful and suitable tools in the quest of new materials. In this thesis different crystalline compounds were synthesized to provide more sustainable products for different applications, as in cosmetics or in agrochemistry, to propose pollutants removal strategy or to obtain materials for electrocatalysis. Therefore, the research projects presented here can be divided into three main topics: (i) sustainable preparation of solid materials of widely used active ingredients aimed at the reduction of their occurrence in the natural environment. The systems studied in this section are cyclodextrins host-guest compounds, obtained via mechanochemical and slurry synthesis. The first chemicals studied are sunscreens inclusion complexes, that proved to have enhanced photostability and desired photoprotection. The same synthetic methods were applied to obtain inclusion complexes of bentazon, a herbicide often found to leach in groundwaters. The resulting products showed to have desired water solubility properties. The same herbicide was also adsorbed on amorphous calcium phosphate nanoparticles, to obtain a biocompatible formulation of this agrochemical. This herbicide could benefit by the adsorption on nanoparticles for what concerns its kinetic release in different media as well as its photostability. (ii) Sustainable synthesis of co-crystals based on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, for the proposal of a sequestering method with a resulting material with enhanced properties. The co-crystallization via mechanochemical means proved that these pollutants can be sequestered via simple solvent-free synthesis and the obtained materials present better photochemical properties when compared to the starting co-formers. (iii) Crystallization from mild solvents of nanosized materials useful for the application in electrocatalysis. The study of compounds based on nickel and cobalt metal ions resulted in the obtainment of 2D and 1D coordination polymers. Moreover, solid solutions were obtained. These crystals showed layered structures and, according to preliminary results, they can be exfoliated.

The objective of this study is to identify the adoption level of practices associated with more sustainable agriculture and environmentally friendly practices. Additionally, the motivations for and barriers to the adoption of these practices by farmers are investigated. Data were collected through closed questionnaires taken by a random sample of farmers in the Southwest, Sao Paulo, Brazil, during the second half of 2013. Overall, sustainable agricultural practices recommended in the literature and analysed in this study are being not fully adopted by farmers of the studied area. The results showed that financial motivation is associated with farmers adopting new, more sustainable technology, whereas the lack of information on and lack of technical support for these technologies are significant barriers. Other results, research implications, limitations and suggestions for future research are presented.

This PhD work deals with problems of synthetic organic chemistry with particular attention to the development of environmentally friendly processes. In particular, new synthetic strategies have been studied based on the use of low cost heterogeneous catalysts, non-toxic reagents and mild operating conditions that do not involve, when possible, the use of solvents. The catalysts examined are both basic and acids, commercial or prepared by hetereogenization of homogeneous catalysts synthesized by tethering or impregnation. In particular it will be discussed the catalytic activity of oxides (Al2O3 and TiO2), supported sulphonic acids and hydrotalcites for the reactions of selective monoesterificazion of dicarboxylic acids, dehydrogenation of butane in gas phase, esterification of levulinic acid, Friedel-Craft acylations, C-C and C-P coupling. The use of these materials has allowed the development of simple processes with low environmental impact. The operating conditions are in fact mild and reaction times short. The selectivity for the desired products is in all reported cases very high and the catalysts can be recycled maintaining their optimum performances.

Background: The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is the primary vector for the viruses that cause yellow fever, mostly in tropical regions of Africa and in parts of South America, and human dengue, which infects 100 million people yearly in the tropics and subtropics. A better understanding of the structural biology of olfactory proteins may pave the way for the development of environmentally-friendly mosquito attractants and repellents, which may ultimately contribute to reduction of mosquito biting and disease transmission. Methodology: Previously, we isolated and cloned a major, female-enriched odorant-binding protein (OBP) from the yellow fever mosquito, AaegOBP1, which was later inadvertently renamed AaegOBP39. We prepared recombinant samples of AaegOBP1 by using an expression system that allows proper formation of disulfide bridges and generates functional OBPs, which are indistinguishable from native OBPs. We crystallized AaegOBP1 and determined its three-dimensional structure at 1.85 angstrom resolution by molecular replacement based on the structure of the malaria mosquito OBP, AgamOBP1, the only mosquito OBP structure known to date. Conclusion: The structure of AaegOBP1 (= AaegOBP39) shares the common fold of insect OBPs with six alpha-helices knitted by three disulfide bonds. A long molecule of polyethylene glycol (PEG) was built into the electron-density maps identified in a long tunnel formed by a crystallographic dimer of AaegOBP1. Circular dichroism analysis indicated that delipidated AaegOBP1 undergoes a pH-dependent conformational change, which may lead to release of odorant at low pH (as in the environment in the vicinity of odorant receptors). A C-terminal loop covers the binding cavity and this ""lid"" may be opened by disruption of an array of acid-labile hydrogen bonds thus explaining reduced or no binding affinity at low pH.

An environmentally friendly analytical procedure with high sensitivity for determination of carbaryl pesticide in natural waters was developed. The flow system was designed with solenoid micro-pumps in order to improve mixing conditions and minimize reagent consumption as well as waste generation. A long pathlength (100 cm) flow cell based on a liquid core waveguide (LCW) was employed to increase the sensitivity in detection of the indophenol formed from the reaction between carbaryl and p-aminophenol (PAP). A clean-up step based on cloud-point extraction was explored to remove the interfering organic matter, avoiding the use of toxic organic solvents. A linear response was observed within the range 5-200 mu g L(-1) and the detection limit, coefficient of variation and sampling rate were estimated as 1.7 mu g L(-1) (99.7% confidence level), 0.7% (n=20) and 55 determinations per hour, respectively. The reagents consumption was 1.9 mu g of PAP and 5.7 mu g of potassium metaperiodate, with volume of 2.6 mL of effluent per determination. The proposed procedure was selective for the determination of carbaryl, without interference from other carbamate pesticides. Recoveries within 84% and 104% were estimated for carbaryl spiked to water samples and the results obtained were also in agreement with those found by a batch spectrophotometric procedure at the 95% confidence level. The waste of the analytical procedure was treated with potassium persulphate and ultraviolet irradiation, yielding a colorless residue and a decrease of 94% of total organic carbon. In addition, the residue after treatment was not toxic for Vibrio fischeri bacteria. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
