Petroleum well drilling monitoring has become an important tool for detecting and preventing problems during the well drilling process. In this paper, we propose to assist the drilling process by analyzing the cutting images at the vibrating shake shaker, in which different concentrations of cuttings can indicate possible problems, such as the collapse of the well borehole walls. In such a way, we present here an innovative computer vision system composed by a real time cutting volume estimator addressed by support vector regression. As far we know, we are the first to propose the petroleum well drilling monitoring by cutting image analysis. We also applied a collection of supervised classifiers for cutting volume classification. This paper introduces a method for the supervision and control of devices in electric substations using fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks. An automatic knowledge acquisition process is included which allows the on-line processing of operator actions and the extraction of control rules to replace gradually the human operator. Some experimental results obtained by the application of the implemented software in a simulated environment with random signal generators are presented.

An approach aimed at enhancing learning by matching individual students' preferred cognitive styles to computer-based instructional (CBI) material is presented. This approach was used in teaching some components of a third-year unit in an electrical engineering course at the Queensland University of Technology. Cognitive style characteristics of perceiving and processing information were considered. The bimodal nature of cognitive styles (analytic/imager, analytic/verbalizer, wholist/imager and wholist/verbalizer) was examined in order to assess the full ramification of cognitive styles on learning. In a quasi-experimental format, students' cognitive styles were analysed by cognitive style analysis (CSA) software. On the basis of the CSA results the system defaulted students to either matched or mismatched CBI material. The consistently better performance by the matched group suggests potential for further investigations where the limitations cited in this paper are eliminated. Analysing the differences between cognitive styles on individual test tasks also suggests that certain test tasks may better suit certain cognitive styles.

The application of artificial intelligence in finance is relatively new area of research. This project employed artificial neural networks (ANNs) that use both fundamental and technical inputs to predict future prices of widely held Australian stocks and use these predicted prices for stock portfolio selection over a long investment horizon. The research involved the creation and testing of a large number of possible network configurations and draws conclusions about ANN architectures and their overall suitability for the purpose of stock portfolio selection.
