When a quantum dot is suffering an AC gate voltage, the sidebands turn up beside the static levels of the dot. We formularized the conductance and current when the effective coupling between levels in the quantum dot induced by the hybrid terms is included using a bi-unitary transform method, and we investigated the interference of the photon sidebands of deferent levels. The interference occurs if the same sidebands of deferent levels overlap, which is possible only when the static levels lie close to and overlap with each other. The overlap of different photon sidebands leads to a simple non-coherent superposition. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this letter, we propose a scheme to buildup a highly coherent solid-state quantum bit (qubit) from two coupled quantum dots. Quantum information is stored in the state of the electron-hole pair with the electron and hole located in different dots, and universal quantum gates involving any pair of qubits are realized by effective coupling interaction via virtually exchanging cavity photons. The C-phycocyanin and the R-phycoerythrin were purified from the blue-green alga Spirulina platensis and red alga Polysiphonia urceolata respectively. Both sodium periodate and glutaraldehyde are effective coupling agents being capable of constructing the R-phycoerythrin-C-phycocyanin conjugate, which was also called phycobiliproteins energy transfer model. The two artificial conjugates constructed with different methods were purified by Sephadex G-200 chromatography respectively. Spectra analysis indicated that energy transfer occurred in the two conjugates. The conjugate with sodium periodate had the higher efficiency of energy transfer than that with glutaraldehyde conjugate.

The XUV lasing output from one germanium slab target has been efficiently coupled into, and further amplified in, a second plasma produced by irradiation of a similar target from the opposite direction. The operation of such a double target was shown to be strongly dependent on the distance by which the two target surfaces were displaced. The line brightness peaked for a surface displacement of approximately 200-mu-m and it was observed that the pointing direction of one output beam could be controlled by the surface separation in an asymmetric geometry. Gain length products of approximately 16 with estimated output powers close to the megawatt level were achieved on both the 23.2 and 23.6 nm J=2-1 transitions for an optimised target configuration. Maximum effective coupling efficiencies of the individual outputs from double targets, comprising 2.2 and 1.4 cm length components, approached 100% for beams propagating from the shorter to the longer target.

Single-phase magnetoelectric multiferroics are ferroelectric materials that display some form of magnetism. In addition, magnetic and ferroelectric order parameters are not independent of one another. Thus, the application of either an electric or magnetic field simultaneously alters both the electrical dipole configuration and the magnetic state of the material. The technological possibilities that could arise from magnetoelectric multiferroics are considerable and a range of functional devices has already been envisioned. Realising these devices, however, requires coupling effects to be significant and to occur at room temperature. Although such characteristics can be created in piezoelectric-magnetostrictive composites, to date they have only been weakly evident in single-phase multiferroics. Here in a newly discovered room temperature multiferroic, we demonstrate significant room temperature coupling by monitoring changes in ferroelectric domain patterns induced by magnetic fields. An order of magnitude estimate of the effective coupling coefficient suggests a value of ~1 × 10-7 sm-1.

Permittivity and conductivity studies of corn syrup in various concentrations are performed using coaxial cavity perturbation technique over a frequency range of 250 MHz–3000 MHz. The results are utilized to estimate relaxation time and dipole moments of the samples. The stability of the material over the variations of time is studied. The measured specific absorption rate of the material complies with the microwave power absorption rate of biological tissues. This suggests the feasibility of using corn syrup as a suitable, cost effective coupling medium for microwave breast imaging. The material can also be used as an efficient breast phantom in microwave breast imaging studies.

Scattering of positronium (Ps) from atoms (H, He, Ne, Ar), molecule (H(2)) and ion (He(+)) have been investigated using a coupled-channel (CC) formalism with a regularised non-local exchange potential. The advantage of using such a regularized exchange potential in the close-coupling formalism and the normalizability aspect of the solution at low energies with a minimum effective coupling are discussed. Results for the elastic and total scattering cross-sections, resonance and binding energies in Ps-H, and pick-off annihilation results in Ps-He are found to be in excellent agreement with measurements and variational predictions. We make a careful study about the nonrelativistic reduction of one-meson-exchange models for the nonmesonic weak hypernuclear decay. Starting from a widely accepted effective coupling Hamiltonian involving the exchange of the complete pseudoscalar and vector meson octets (pi, eta, K, rho, omega, K*), the strangeness-changing weak LambdaN --> NN transition potential is derived, including two effects that have been systematically omitted in the literature, or, at best, only partly considered. These are the kinematical effects due to the difference between the lambda and nucleon masses, and the first-order nonlocality corrections, i.e., those involving up to first-order differential operators. Our analysis clearly shows that the main kinematical effect on the local contributions is the reduction of the effective pion mass. The kinematical effect on the nonlocal contributions is more complicated, since it activates several new terms that would otherwise remain dormant. Numerical results for C-12(Lambda) and He-5(Lambda) are presented and they show that the combined kinematical plus nonlocal corrections have an appreciable influence on the partial decay rates. However, this is somewhat diminished in the main decay observables: the total nonmesonic rate, Gamma(nm), the neutron-to-proton branching ratio, Gamma(n)/Gamma(p), and the asymmetry parameter, a(Lambda). The latter two still cannot be reconciled with the available experimental data. The existing theoretical predictions for the sign of a(Lambda) in He-5(Lambda) are confirmed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. A class of boson-fermion stars, whose spin-0 and spin-1/2 constituents interact through a U(1) current-current term in the Lagrangian density, is analyzed. It is shown that it describes the low-energy behavior of a system of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) from the leptonic sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. In this case the effective coupling constant A is related to the Fermi constant GF.

We present general explicit expressions for a shell-model calculation of the vector hypernuclear parameter in nonmesonic weak decay. We use a widely accepted effective coupling Hamiltonian involving the exchange of the complete pseudoscalar and vector meson octets (π, η, K, ρ, ω, K*). In contrast to the approximated formula widely used in the literature, we correctly treat the contribution of transitions originated from single-proton states beyond the s-shell. Exact and simple analytical expressions are obtained for the particular cases of Λ 5He and Λ 12C, within the one-pion-exchange model. Numerical computations of the asymmetry parameter, aΛ, are presented. Our results show a qualitative agreement with other theoretical estimates but also a contradiction with recent experimental determinations. Our simple analytical formulas provide a guide in searching the origin of such discrepancies, and they will be useful for helping to solve the hypernuclear weak decay puzzle.

We critically review the validity of heavy-quark spin and flavor symmetries in heavy-light decay constants, form factors and effective couplings obtained within a nonperturbative framework, the ingredients of which are all motivated by Dyson-Schwinger equations studies of QCD. Along the way, we make new predictions for two effective nonphysical couplings: gDsDK = 24.1-1.6 +2.5 and gBsBK = 33.3 -3.7 +4.0. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence.

This work analyses a hypothetically improved perturbative approach taking a dressed massive-like gluon propagator and an effective coupling into account. As an early step, corrections were calculated to the ghost and gluon propagators, and the ghost-gluon vertex in the Landau gauge, pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. Results were satisfactorily compared with lattice data. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

This work comprises a study upon the quantization and the renormalizability of the generalized electrodynamics of spinless charged particles (mesons), namely, the generalized scalar electrodynamics (GSQED4). The theory is quantized in the covariant framework of the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky method. Thereafter, the complete Green's functions are obtained through functional methods and a proper discussion on the theory's renormalizability is also given. Next, we present the computation and further discussion on the radiative correction at α order; and, as it turns out, an unexpected mP-dependent divergence on the mesonic sector of the theory is found. Furthermore, in order to show the effectiveness of the renormalization procedure on the present theory, we also give a diagrammatic discussion on the photon self-energy at α2 order, where we observe contributions from the meson self-energy function. Afterwards, we present the expressions of the counterterms and effective coupling of the theory, obtaining from the latter an energy range where the theory is defined by m2≤k2
