The structural and electronic properties of perylene diimide liquid crystal PPEEB are studied using ab initio methods based on the density functional theory (I)FT). Using available experimental crystallographic data as a guide, we propose a detailed structural model for the packing of solid PPEEB. We find that due to the localized nature of the band edge wave function, theoretical approaches beyond the standard method, such as hybrid functional (PBE0), are required to correctly characterize the band structure of this material. Moreover, unlike previous assumptions, we observe the formation of hydrogen bonds between the side chains of different molecules, which leads to a dispersion of the energy levels. This result indicates that the side chains of the molecular crystal not only are responsible for its structural conformation but also can be used for tuning the electronic and optical properties of these materials.

Heusler compounds are key materials for spintronic applications. They have attracted a lot of interest due to their half-metallic properties predicted by band structure calculations.rnThe aim of this work is to evaluate experimentally the validity of the predictions of half metallicity by band structure calculations for two specific Heusler compounds, Co2FeAl0.3Si0.7 and Co2MnGa. Two different spectroscopy methods for the analysis of the electronic properties were used: Angular Resolved Ultra-violet Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARUPS) and Tunneling Spectroscopy.rnHeusler compounds are prepared as thin films by RF-sputtering in an ultra-high vacuum system. rnFor the characterization of the samples, bulk and surface crystallographic and magnetic properties of Co2FeAl0.3Si0.7 and Co2MnGa are studied. X-ray and electron diffraction reveal a bulk and surface crossover between two different types of sublattice order (from B2 to L21) with increasing annealing temperature. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism results show that the magnetic properties in the surface and bulk are identical, although the magnetic moments obtained are 5% below from the theoretically predicted.rnBy ARUPS evidence for the validity of the predicted total bulk density of states (DOS) was demonstrated for both Heusler compounds. Additional ARUPS intensity contributions close to the Fermi energy indicates the presence of a specific surface DOS. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the crystallographic order, controlled by annealing, plays an important role on brodening effects of DOS features. Improving order resulted in better defined ARUPS features.rnTunneling magnetoresistance measurements of Co2FeAl0.3Si0.7 and Co2MnGa based MTJ’s result in a Co2FeAl0.3Si0.7 spin polarization of 44%, which is the highest experimentally obtained value for this compound, although it is lower than the 100% predicted. For Co2MnGa no high TMR was achieved.rnUnpolarized tunneling spectroscopy reveals contribution of interface states close to the Fermi energy. Additionally magnon excitations due to magnetic impurities at the interface are observed. Such contributions can be the reason of a reduced TMR compared to the theoretical predictions. Nevertheless, for energies close to the Fermi energy and for Co2MnGa, the validity of the band structure calculations is demonstrated with this technique as well.

The electronic structure of atomically precise armchair graphene nanoribbons of width N=7 (7-AGNRs) are investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) on Au(111). We record the standing waves in the local density of states of finite ribbons as a function of sample bias and extract the dispersion relation of frontier electronic states by Fourier transformation. The wave-vector-dependent contributions from these states agree with density functional theory calculations, thus enabling the unambiguous assignment of the states to the valence band, the conduction band, and the next empty band with effective masses of 0.41±0.08me,0.40±0.18me, and 0.20±0.03me, respectively. By comparing the extracted dispersion relation for the conduction band to corresponding height-dependent tunneling spectra, we find that the conduction band edge can be resolved only at small tip-sample separations and has not been observed before. As a result, we report a band gap of 2.37±0.06 eV for 7-AGNRs adsorbed on Au(111).

The electronic structure and properties of the orthorhombic phase of the CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 perovskite are computed with density functional theory. The structure, optimized using a van der Waals functional, reproduces closely the unit cell volume. The experimental band gap is reproduced accurately by combining spin-orbit effects and a hybrid functional in which the fraction of exact exchange is tuned self-consistently to the optical dielectric constant. Including spin-orbit coupling strongly reduces the anisotropy of the effective mass tensor, predicting a low electron effective mass in all crystal directions. The computed binding energy of the unrelaxed exciton agrees with experimental data, and the values found imply a fast exciton dissociation at ambient temperature. Also polaron masses for the separated carriers are estimated. The values of all these parameters agree with recent indications that fast dynamics and large carrier diffusion lengths are key in the high photovoltaic efficiencies shown by these materials.

Structural stability, electronic, and optical properties of InN under high pressure are studied using the first-principles calculations. The lattice constants and electronic band structure are found consistent with the available experimental and theoretical values. The pressure of the wurtzite-to-rocksalt structural transition is 13.4 GPa, which is in an excellent agreement with the most recent experimental values. The optical characteristics reproduce the experimental data thus justifying the feasibility of our theoretical predictions of the optical properties of InN at high pressures.

This doctoral studies focused on the development of new materials for efficient use of solar energy for environmental applications. The research investigated the engineering of the band gap of semiconductor materials to design and optimise visible-light-sensitive photocatalysts. Experimental studies have been combined with computational simulation in order to develop predictive tools for a systematic understanding and design on the crystal and energy band structures of multi-component metal oxides.

In0.2Ga0.8N layers were directly grown on Si(111) substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). Structural characteristics of the as-grown InGaN epilayers were evaluated high resolution X-ray diffraction and composition of InGaN was estimated from photoluminescence spectra using the standard Vegard's law. High-resolution X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements were used to determine the band offset of wurtzite-In0.2Ga0.8N/Si(111) heterojunctions. The valence band of InGaN is found to be 2.08 +/- 0.04 eV below that of Si. The conduction band offset (CBO) of InGaN/Si heterojunction is found similar to 0.74 eV and a type-II heterojunction. Cladding band structure of air-guiding photonic crystal fibers with high air-filling fraction is calculated in terms of fiber shape variation. The fundamental photonic band gap dependence on structure parameters, air-filling fraction and spacing, is also investigated. The numerical results show that the band gap edges shift toward longer wavelength as the air-filling fraction is increased, whereas the relative band gap width increases linearly. For a fixed air-filling fraction, the band gap edges with respect to spacing keep constant. With this method, the simulation results agree well with the reported data. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. The characteristics of the cladding band structure of air-core photonic crystal fibers with silica rings in triangular lattice are investigated by using a standard plane wave method. The numerical results show that light can be localized in the air core by the photonic band gaps of the fiber. By increasing the air-filling fraction, the band gap edges of the low frequency photonic band gaps shift to shorter wavelength.. whereas the band gap width decreases linearly. In order to make a specified light fall in the low frequency band gaps of the fiber, the interplay of the silica ring spacing and the air-filling fraction is also analyzed. It shows that the silica ring spacing increases monotonously when the air-filling fraction is increased, and the spacing range increases exponentially. This type fiber might have potential in infrared light transmission. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The m-plane GaN films grown on LiAlO2(100) by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition exhibit anisotropic crystallographic properties. The Williamson-Hall plots point out they are due to the different tilts and lateral correlation lengths of mosaic blocks parallel and perpendicular to GaN[0001] in the growth plane. The symmetric and asymmetric reciprocal space maps reveal the strain of m-plane GaN to be biaxial in-plane compress epsilon(xx)=-0.79% and epsilon(zz)=-0.14% with an out-of-plane dilatation epsilon(yy)=0.38%. This anisotropic strain further separates the energy levels of top valence band at Gamma point. The energy splitting as 37 meV as well as in-plane polarization anisotropy for transitions are found by the polarized photoluminescence spectra at room temperature. Accurate electronic structures of the technologically important lanthanide/rare-earth sesquioxides (Ln2O3, with Ln=La, ⋯,Lu) and CeO2 have been calculated using hybrid density functionals HSE03, HSE06, and screened exchange (sX-LDA). We find that these density functional methods describe the strongly correlated Ln f electrons as well as the recent G0W0@LDA+U results, generally yielding the correct band gaps and trends across the Ln period. For HSE, the band gap between O 2p states and lanthanide 5d states is nearly independent of the lanthanide, while the minimum gap varies as filled or empty Ln 4f states come into this gap. sX-LDA predicts the unoccupied 4f levels at higher energies, which leads to a better agreement with experiments for Sm2O 3, Eu2O3, and Yb2O3. © 2013 American Physical Society.
