The PhD activity described in the document is part of the Microsatellite and Microsystem Laboratory of the II Faculty of Engineering, University of Bologna. The main objective is the design and development of a GNSS receiver for the orbit determination of microsatellites in low earth orbit. The development starts from the electronic design and goes up to the implementation of the navigation algorithms, covering all the aspects that are involved in this type of applications. The use of GPS receivers for orbit determination is a consolidated application used in many space missions, but the development of the new GNSS system within few years, such as the European Galileo, the Chinese COMPASS and the Russian modernized GLONASS, proposes new challenges and offers new opportunities to increase the orbit determination performances. The evaluation of improvements coming from the new systems together with the implementation of a receiver that is compatible with at least one of the new systems, are the main activities of the PhD. The activities can be divided in three section: receiver requirements definition and prototype implementation, design and analysis of the GNSS signal tracking algorithms, and design and analysis of the navigation algorithms. The receiver prototype is based on a Virtex FPGA by Xilinx, and includes a PowerPC processor. The architecture follows the software defined radio paradigm, so most of signal processing is performed in software while only what is strictly necessary is done in hardware. The tracking algorithms are implemented as a combination of Phase Locked Loop and Frequency Locked Loop for the carrier, and Delay Locked Loop with variable bandwidth for the code. The navigation algorithm is based on the extended Kalman filter and includes an accurate LEO orbit model.

This work investigated the effects of frequency and precision of feedback on the learning of a dual-motor task. One hundred and twenty adults were randomly assigned to six groups of different knowledge of results (KR), frequency (100%, 66% or 33%) and precision (specific or general) levels. In the stabilization phase, participants performed the dual task (combination of linear positioning and manual force control) with the provision of KR. Ten non-KR adaptation trials were performed for the same task, but with the introduction of an electromagnetic opposite traction force. The analysis showed a significant main effect for frequency of KR. The participants who received KR in 66% of the stabilization trials showed superior adaptation performance than those who received 100% or 33%. This finding reinforces that there is an optimal level of information, neither too high nor too low, for motor learning to be effective.

The thesis explores the outcome of the exhaustive theoretical and experimental investigations performed on Octagonal Microstrip Antenna configurations. Development of the MATLAB TM backed 3D-Conformal Finite Difference Time Domain (CFDTD)Modeller for the numerical computation of the radiation characteristics of the antenna is the theme of the work. The predicted results are verified experimentally and by IE3D TM simulation. The influence of the patch dimensions,feed configurations,feed dimensions and feed positions upon the radiation performance of the antenna is studied in detail. Octagonal Microstrip Antenna configurations suitable for Mobile-Bluetooth application is dealt in detail. A simple design formula for the regular Octagonal geometry is also presented. A compact planar multi band antenna for GPS/DCS/2.4/5.8GHz WLAN application is included as appendix A. Planar near field measurement technique is explained in appendix B.

Design of a compact dual frequency microstrip antenna is presented. The structure consists of a slotted circular patch with a dielectric superstrate. The superstrate,not only acts as a radome, but improves the bandwidth and lowers the resonant frequency also. The proposed design provides an overall size reduction of about 60% compared to an unslotted patch along with good efficiency,gain and bandwidth. The polarization planes at the two resonances are orthogonal and can be simultaneously excited using a coaxial feed. Parametric study of this configuration showed that the frequency ratio of the two resonances can be varied from 1.17 to 1.7 enabling its applications in the major wireless communication bands like AWS, DECT,PHS,Wi.Bro, ISM,and DMB. Design equations are also deduced for the proposed antenna and validated.

Design of a dual-port circular patch antenna with a sector-slot for dual-frequency operation is presented. The antenna resonates at two distinct frequencies with orthogonal polarizations and broad radiation characteristics. Unlike the conventional circular patch, this antenna can be microstrip-fed to operate at either of the resonances. The two polarizations can be simultaneously excited using two electromagnetically coupled ports with an isolation better than −30 dB between the ports. This antenna has the added advantage of size reduction of 44% compared to the conventional circular patch without any reduction in gain.

The ionospheric effect is one of the major errors in GPS data processing over long baselines. As a dispersive medium, it is possible to compute its influence on the GPS signal with the ionosphere-free linear combination of L1 and L2 observables, requiring dual-frequency receivers. In the case of single-frequency receivers, ionospheric effects are either neglected or reduced by using a model. In this paper, an alternative for single-frequency users is proposed. It involves multiresolution analysis (MRA) using a wavelet analysis of the double-difference observations to remove the short- and medium-scale ionosphere variations and disturbances, as well as some minor tropospheric effects. Experiments were carried out over three baseline lengths from 50 to 450 km, and the results provided by the proposed method were better than those from dual-frequency receivers. The horizontal root mean square was of about 0.28 m (1 sigma).

Titre: La Visualisation in vivo des « espèces oxygénées radiculaires» au niveau des cellules ganglionnaires de la rétine. Le But : Les espèces d'oxygène réactives sont non seulement produites à la suite de la blessure cellulaire, mais servent aussi des molécules faisantes des signes pour une variété de processus critiques, en incluant mitosis et de mort de cellule. Nous avons auparavant dit que la blessure à RGC axons incite un éclatement de superoxyde dans le corps de cellule, probablement de l'origine mitochondrial (Lieven et al, 2006). Nous décrivons maintenant une méthode pour refléter des espèces d'oxygène réactives dans la rétine de l'animal vivant en utilisant un confocal le lisant rapidement du laser ophthalmoscope a appelé la Rétine de Heidelberg Angiograph 2 (HRA2) équipé avec les lasers doubles. La méthodolologie : Après les études préliminaires en utilisant d'autres indicateurs (hydroethidium; HEt) pour les espèces d'oxygène réactives, nous avons essayé de refléter des espèces d'oxygène réactives dans le dans le modèle de vivo l'utilisation 5-(et 6)-chloromethyl-2', 7 '-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate, l'acétyle ester (le CM-H2DCFDA). Un nerf optique de Longs-Evans rats a été écrasé intraorbitalement, en épargnant la circulation retinal. Dans certains rats colliculi supérieur de Longs rats Evans avait été auparavant exposé via craniotomy et surposé avec Gelfoam saturé avec le vert indocyanine (ICG). Aux points de temps variables les animaux ont été injectés intraveineusement ou intravitreally avec HEt ou le CM-H2DCFDA et reflétés avec fluorescein et-ou les filtres d'ICG en utilisant le HRA2. Les résultats: Nous avons démontré le foyer brillant multiple de fluorescence dans la couche de cellule de ganglion quand nous avons rétrogradement étiqueté d'ICG bilatéralement, en indiquant qu'ICG était un colorant rétrogradement transporté qui pourrait être découvert avec le HRA2. Après axotomy et l'injection intravitreal de CM-H2DCFDA, il y avait la fluorescence brillante dans le canal fluorescein dans quelques cellules dans la couche de cellule de ganglion, en accord avec la production d'une ou plusieurs espèces d'oxygène réactives. Les conclusions : RGCs peut être identifié et les niveaux d'espèces d'oxygène réactives mesurés en utilisant une fréquence double confocal Mots-clés : cellules ganglionnaires de la rétine; especes oxygenique radiculaire; la visualisation;

The arrow shaped microstrip antenna, which produces dual frequency dual polarisation operation with considera-ble size reduction compared to conventional patches has been reported [I]. These antennas provide greater area reduction and improved gain compared to drum shaped patches [2]. Prediction of the resonance frequency of drum shaped patches [3] and circular patches for broadband operation [4] are available in the literature. In this Letter, we propose empirical formulas for calculating the resonance frequencies of the arrow shaped microstrip antenna. These antennas can be employed for obtaining dual frequency with the same polarisation, bandwidth enhancement, circular polarisation etc. by varying its different parameters or by introducing slots. The proposed design equations provide an easier and simple way of predicting the resonant frequencies of these patches.

The thesis is the outcome of the experimental and theoretical investigations on a new compact drum-shaped microstrip antenna. A new compact antenna suitable for personal communication system(PCS), Global position System(GPS) and array applications is developed and analysed. The generalised cavity model and spatial fourier transform technique are suitably modified for the analysis of the antenna. The predicted results are compared with experimental results and excellent agreement is observed. The experimental work done by the author in related fields are incorporated as three appendices in this thesis. A single feed dual frequency microstrip antenne is presented in appendix A.Appendix B describes a new broadband dual frequeny microstrip antenna. A new electronically reconfigurable dual frequency microstrip patch antenna with highly simplified varactor tuning circuitry is presented. The proposed design allows relatively independent selection of the two operating frequencies. Tuning ranges of 7.1 and 4.1% are realised for the two resonant frequencies without the use of any matching circuits.

Antennas are necessary and vital components of communication and radar systems, but sometimes their inability to adjust to new operating scenarios can limit system performance. Reconfigurable antennas can adjust with changing system requirements or environmental conditions and provide additional levels of functionality that may result in wider instantaneous frequency bandwidths, more extensive scan volumes, and radiation patterns with more desirable side lobe distributions. Their agility and diversity created new horizons for different types of applications especially in cognitive radio, Multiple Input Multiple Output Systems, satellites and many other applications. Reconfigurable antennas satisfy the requirements for increased functionality, such as direction finding, beam steering, radar, control and command, within a confined volume. The intelligence associated with the reconfigurable antennas revolved around switching mechanisms utilized. In the present work, we have investigated frequency reconfigurable polarization diversity antennas using two methods: 1. By using low-loss, high-isolation switches such as PIN diode, the antenna can be structurally reconfigured to maintain the elements near their resonant dimensions for different frequency bands and/or polarization. 2. Secondly, the incorporation of variable capacitors or varactors, to overcome many problems faced in using switches and their biasing. The performances of these designs have been studied using standard simulation tools used in industry/academia and they have been experimentally verified. Antenna design guidelines are also deduced by accounting the resonances. One of the major contributions of the thesis lies in the analysis of the designed antennas using FDTD based numerical computation to validate their performance.

The recent boom in wireless communication industry, especially in the area of cellular telephony and wireless data communication, has led to the increased demand for multi band antennas. In such applications the issues to be addressed are, wide bandwidth and gain, while striving for miniature geometry. A dual frequency configuration useful in GSM1800 and Blue tooth, is one that operates with similar properties, both in terms of reflection and radiation characteristics, in the two bands of interest. Dual frequency operations can be realized by exciting the Microstrip Patch Antenna (MPA) using a single feed [1] or dual feed [2]. In this paper, Conformal FDTD[3] method with Perfect Magnetic Conductor (PMC) applied along the plane of symmetry [4] is used to study the characteristics of an Octagonal MPA. The theoretical results are compared against the experimental and IE3D™ simulated results
