The demise of the Beothuk as a past still present

This article aims to investigate contemporary cultural representations of the Beothuk Indians in art, literature and museum displays in Newfoundland, Canada, focussing on ways these reimagine the past for the present, offering perspectives on contested histories, such as the circumstances leading to the demise of the Beothuk. Wiped out through the impact of colonialism, the Beothuk are the ‘absent other’ who continue to be remembered and made present through the creative arts, largely at the expense of other indigenous groups on the island. Rather than focussing on the ‘non-absent past, according to Polish scholar Ewa Domańska, ‘instead we turn to a past that is somehow still present, that will not go away or, rather, that of which we cannot rid ourselves’ (2006, 346). Perfil microbiológico, prevalencia de resistencia antibiótica y patrones de susceptibilidad en infección urinaria en una población pediátrica

Introducción: El incremento de la resistencia antibiótica se considera un problema de salud pública con consecuencias clínicas y económicas, por lo tanto se determinará la prevalencia de resistencia antibiótica en Infección del Tracto Urinario (ITU, el perfil microbiológico y los patrones de susceptibilidad en una población pediátrica atendida en la Fundación Cardioinfantil. Materiales y métodos: Estudio observacional de corte transversal, retrospectivo, entre 1 mes a 18 años de edad, con diagnóstico de ITU comunitaria atendidos entre Enero de 2011 y Diciembre de 2013. Se excluyeron pacientes con dispositivos en la vía urinaria, instrumentación quirúrgica previa, trayectos fistulosos entre la vía urinaria y sistema digestivo, ITU luego de 48 horas de hospitalización y recaída clínica en tratamiento. Se estableció la prevalencia de ITU resistente y se realizó un análisis descriptivo de la información. Resultados: Se evaluaron 385 registros clínicos, con una mediana de 1.08 años (RIQ 0.8 – 4.08), el 73.5% eran niñas. La fiebre predominó (76.5%), seguido de emesis (32.0%), disuria (23.7%) y dolor abdominal (23.1%). El uropatógeno más frecuente fue E.coli (75%), seguido de Proteus mirabilis (8.5%) y Klebsiella spp. (8.3%). La Ampicilina, el Trimetropim sulfametoxazol, la Ampicilina sulbactam y el ácido nalidixico tuvieron mayor tasa de resistencia. La prevalencia de BLEE fue 5.2% y AmpC 3.9%. La prevalencia de resistencia antimicrobiana fue de 11.9%. Conclusiones: La E.coli es el uropatogeno más frecuentemente aislado en ITU, con resistencia a la ampicilina en 60.2%, cefalosporinas de primera generación en 15.5%, trimetropin sulfametoxazol en 43.9%, cefepime 4.8%. La prevalencia de resistencia antimicrobiana fue de 11.9%.

Synthesis, characterization and solution properties of amphiphilic N-isopropylacrylamide-poly(ethylene glycol)-dodecyl methacrylate thermosensitive polymers

Terpolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide, dodecyl methacrylate (DOMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) methacrylate, were synthesized by random copolymerization, and the composition was controlled to achieve systems having different thermosensitivities. H-1 NMR spectra and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were employed to characterize the different samples obtained. The solution properties were studied by employing spectrophotometry, fluorescence, and dynamic light scattering techniques. The chemical compositions in the final terpolymers are close to those in the feed. The polymers exhibited cloud point temperatures (T-es) varying from 17 to 52 degrees C. Micropolarity studies using I-1/I-3 ratio of the vibronic bands of pyrene show the formation of amphiphilic aggregates capable of incorporating hydrophobic drugs as the polymer concentration is increased. The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) increases from 3.6 x 10(-3) to 1 x 10(-2) g/l with the PEG content varying from 5 to 35 mol%. Anisotropy measurements confirm the results obtained by pyrene fluorescence and show that the aggregates resulting from intermolecular interactions present different organizations. The hydrodynamic diameters (Dh) of the aggregates determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS) vary from 40 to 150 nm depending on the terpolymer composition. The T-cs and Dh values decreased with the ionic strength, and this behavior was attributed to the dehydration of the polymeric micelles. The capacity of solubilization of the aggregates was evaluated by employing pyrene, and the obtained results confirm the ability to incorporate hydrophobic molecules. Uma perspectiva fenomenológica para: o que é o animal no circo?

The relationship between humans and the world around is getting less symbiotic and harmonic, so as with the other animals we share the planet with, mostly about domination of plagues, domination for food, company, work or fun. This last both are responsible for the beginning of the Circus as we know, with the exhibition of wild animals and horses, and have been increased with clowns, acrobats, and jugglers, street artists, getting to be one unified show all around the world, which most of them don´t have animals. Following this tendency, the PL 7291/06 is on process on the plenary assembly to forbidden the animals inside Circus. In that matter, this work is a Phenomenological perspective of the phenomenon Circus’s animals sited beyond the animal rights activists perspective. The Ideographic and Nomotetic analysis of the activist’s speech realize that is no discordance between then. All the speeches agrees that the animal must be out of the circus, and most of them agrees about the cruelty involving the animal´s domination, about that ONGs should be the better destination for this animals, and they shows lack of knowledge about the Brazilian Circus, with or without animals, their traditions and characteristics, so as the lack of knowledge about de ecology and biology of the animals involved.
