Statement of problem. Little data are available regarding the effect of heat-treatments on the dimensional stability of hard chairside reline resins. Purpose. The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate whether a heat-treatment improves the dimensional stability of the reline resin Duraliner II and to compare the linear dimensional changes of this material with the heat-polymerized acrylic resin Lucitone 550. Material and methods. The materials were mixed according to the manufacturer's instructions and packed into a stainless steel split mold (50.0 mm diameter and 0.5 mm thickness) with reference points (A, B, C, and D). Duraliner II specimens were polymerized for 12 minutes in water at 37°C and bench cooled to room temperature before being removed from the mold. Twelve specimens were made and divided into 2 groups: group 1 specimens (n=6) were left untreated, and group 2 specimens (n=6) were submitted to a heat-treatment in a water bath at 55°C for 10 minutes and then bench cooled to room temperature. The 6 Lucitone specimens (control group) were polymerized in a water bath for 9 hours at 71°C. The specimens were removed after the mold reached the room temperature. A Nikon optical comparator was used to measure the distances between the reference points (AB and CD) on the stainless steel mold (baseline readings) and on the specimens to the nearest 0.001 mm. Measurements were made after processing and after the specimens had been stored in distilled water at 37°C for 8 different periods of time. Data were subjected to analysis of variance with repeated measures, followed by Tukey's multiple comparison test (P<.05). Results. All specimens exhibited shrinkage after processing (control, -0.41%; group 1, -0.26%; and group 2, -0.51%). Group 1 specimens showed greater shrinkage (-1.23%) than the control (-0.23%) and group 2 (-0.81%) specimens after 60 days of storage in water (P<.05). Conclusion. Within the limitations of this study, a significant improvement of the long-term dimensional stability of the Duraliner II reline resin was observed when the specimens were heat-treated. However, the shrinkage remained considerably higher than the denture base resin Lucitone 550. Copyright © 2002 by The Editorial Council of The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the dimensional changes of denture bases made from different resins after different storage periods. For this purpose, 25 sets of plaster models/resin bases were prepared using 4 acrylic resins submitted to two types of polymerization: 1- QC-20 submitted to polymerization by microwave energy; 2- QC-20 submitted to polymerization by water hot bath; 3- Vipi Cril submitted to polymerization by water hot bath; 4- Vipi Wave submitted to polymerization by microwave energy; and 5- Onda Cryl submitted to polymerization by microwave energy. After polymerization, the specimens were sectioned for accuracy readings using a comparison microscope. Readings were taken at 3 points: the crests of the right (A) and left (B) ridges, and the median region of the palate, in 4 different periods. The data obtained were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test at 5% significance level. The greatest distortions were found in the posterior palatal region of the base (M), with statistically significant difference (p<0.05) for the studied resins. All acrylic resins presented dimensional changes and the storage period influenced these alterations.

Objective: To study bony and soft tissue changes at implants installed in alveolar bony ridges of different widths.Material and methods: In 6 Labrador dogs, the mandibular premolars and first molars were extracted, and a buccal defect was created in the left side at the third and fourth premolars by removing the buccal bone and the inter-radicular and interdental septa. Three months after tooth extraction, full-thickness mucoperiosteal flaps were elevated, and implants were installed, two at the reduced (test) and two at the regular-sized ridges (control). Narrow or wide abutments were affixed to the implants. After 3 months, biopsies were harvested, and ground sections prepared for histological evaluation. Results: A higher vertical buccal bony crest resorption was found at the test (1.5 +/- 0.7 mm and 1.0 +/- 0.7 mm) compared to the control implants (1.0 +/- 0.5 mm and 0.7 +/- 0.4 mm), for both wide and narrow abutment sites. A higher horizontal alveolar resorption was identified at the control compared to the test implants. The difference was significant for narrow abutment sites. The peri-implant mucosa was more coronally positioned at the narrow abutment, in the test sites, while for the control sites, the mucosal adaptation was more coronal at the wide abutment sites. These differences, however, did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Implants installed in regular-sized alveolar ridges had a higher horizontal, but a lower vertical buccal bony crest resorption compared to implants installed in reduced alveolar ridges. Narrow abutments in reduced ridges as well as wide abutments in regular-sized ridges yielded less soft tissue recession compared to their counterparts.

AIM: To assess dimensional ridge alterations following immediate implant placement in molar extraction sites. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve subjects received 12 immediate transmucosal implants in molar extraction sites. Peri-implant defects were treated according to the principles of Guided Bone Regeneration by means of a deproteinized bone substitute and a bioresorbable collagen membrane. Changes in vertical (IS-BD, CREST-BD) and horizontal distances (EC-I, IC-I) of alveolar bony walls to the bottom of the defects (BD) and to the implant surfaces (I) were compared between implant placement and surgical re-entry at 6 months. RESULTS: The implant survival rate at 6 months was 100%. Statistically significant differences (P<0.01) were observed in the mean changes in vertical distances IS-BD and CREST-BD between baseline and re-entry. At re-entry, all peri-implant marginal defects assessed from the internal socket wall to the implant surface (IC-I) were healed. The residual combined thickness of the buccal wall with the newly formed peri-implant bone at sites with an initial thickness of 1 mm was statistically significantly smaller (P<0.05) compared with that of sites with an initial buccal thickness of 2 mm (2.50 +/- 0.76 vs. 4+/-0 mm). CONCLUSIONS: The marginal defects around immediate implants placed in molar extraction sites were completely filled after 6 months of healing through de novo bone formation. Bone resorption was observed from the external aspects of the buccal and oral socket walls. Dimensional changes of the external socket walls were mostly pronounced at the buccal aspects.

Moisture transport and dimensional change during wood drying or wetting processes were analyzed based on pictures from an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). This provides quantitative relationships between dimensional changes of total area, cell wall, and lumen, and moisture content for earlywood and latewood. Earlywood and latewood behave similarly but show some quantitative differences. The overall outcome for sections containing both kinds of wood seems to be dominated by the latewood behavior. The observed strain behavior of wood during drying is anisotropic in ways that are inconsistent with explanations solely related to microfibril orientation or earlywood/latewood interactions and more likely may be influenced by ray tracheids.

The wedge shape is a fairly common cross-section found in many non-axisymmetric components used in machines, aircraft, ships and automobiles. If such components are forged between two mutually inclined dies the metal displaced by the dies flows into the converging as well as into the diverging channels created by the inclined dies. The extent of each type of flow (convergent/divergent) depends on the die—material interface friction and the included die angle. Given the initial cross-section, the length as well as the exact geometry of the forged cross-section are therefore uniquely determined by these parameters. In this paper a simple stress analysis is used to predict changes in the geometry of a wedge undergoing compression between inclined platens. The flow in directions normal to the cross-section is assumed to be negligible. Experiments carried out using wedge-shaped lead billets show that, knowing the interface friction and as long as the deformation is not too large, the dimensional changes in the wedge can be predicted with reasonable accuracy. The predicted flow behaviour of metal for a wide range of die angles and interface friction is presented: these characteristics can be used by the die designer to choose the die lubricant (only) if the die angle is specified and to choose both of these parameters if there is no restriction on the exact die angle. The present work shows that the length of a wedge undergoing compression is highly sensitive to die—material interface friction. Thus in a situation where the top and bottom dies are inclined to each other, a wedge made of the material to be forged could be put between the dies and then compressed, whereupon the length of the compressed wedge — given the degree of compression — affords an estimate of the die—material interface friction.

Australian forest industries have a long history of export trade of a wide range of products from woodchips(for paper manufacturing), sandalwood (essential oils, carving and incense) to high value musical instruments, flooring and outdoor furniture. For the high value group, fluctuating environmental conditions brought on by changes in mperature and relative humidity, can lead to performance problems due to consequential swelling, shrinkage and/or distortion of the wood elements. A survey determined the types of value-added products exported, including species and dimensions packaging used and export markets. Data loggers were installed with shipments to monitor temperature and relative humidity conditions. These data were converted to timber equilibrium moisture content values to provide an indication of the environment that the wood elements would be acclimatising to. The results of the initial survey indicated that primary high value wood export products included guitars, flooring, decking and outdoor furniture. The destination markets were mainly located in the northern hemisphere, particularly the United States of America, China, Hong Kong, Europe including the United Kingdom), Japan, Korea and the Middle East. Other regions importing Australian-made wooden articles were south-east Asia, New Zealand and South Africa. Different timber species have differing rates of swelling and shrinkage, so the types of timber were also recorded during the survey. Results from this work determined that the major species were ash-type eucalypts from south-eastern Australia (commonly referred to in the market as Tasmanian oak), jarrah from Western Australia, spotted gum, hoop pine, white cypress, black butt, brush box and Sydney blue gum from Queensland and New South Wales. The environmental conditions data indicated that microclimates in shipping containers can fluctuate extensively during shipping. Conditions at the time of manufacturing were usually between 10 and 12% equilibrium moisture content, however conditions during shipping could range from 5 (very dry) to 20% (very humid). The packaging systems incorporated were reported to be efficient at protecting the wooden articles from damage during transit. The research highlighted the potential risk for wood components to ‘move’ in response to periods of drier or more humid conditions than those at the time of manufacturing, and the importance of engineering a packaging system that can account for the environmental conditions experienced in shipping containers. Examples of potential dimensional changes in wooden components were calculated based on published unit shrinkage data for key species and the climatic data returned from the logging equipment. The information highlighted the importance of good design to account for possible timber movement during shipping. A timber movement calculator was developed to allow designers to input component species, dimensions, site of manufacture and destination, to see validate their product design. Single crystal macroscopic thermal expansion coefficient measurements have been made on uniaxial lithium potassium sulphate crystal both along and normal to the six fold axis, employing Fizeau’s interferometer method. Measurements were made in the range of −120°C to 500°C. The results show that lithium potassium sulphate exhibits two major anomalies in its expansion coefficients around −95°C and 422°C respectively, the one at −95°C has been observed for the first time. The nature of dimensional changes of the crystal at the upper and lower transition points are opposite in nature. The crystal shows considerable lattice anisotropy. Megaw’s tilt concept has been invoked to explain the relative magnitudes of expansion coefficients alonga andc directions. Structural features responsible for the absence of ferroelectricity in this crystal have been pointed out.

The synthesis and characterization of novel acid-base polyimide membranes for the use in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell is presented in this paper. The sulfonated polyimides (SPIs) bearing basic triphenylamine groups were easily synthesized using 4,4'-binaphthyl-1,1',8,8'-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), sulfonated diamine of 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether-2,2'-disulfonic acid (ODADS), and nonsulfonated diamines of 4,4'-diaminotriphenylamine (DATPA). The effects of the structure of the dianhydride and diamines on the properties of SPI membranes were evaluated through the study of membrane parameters including water sorption, proton conductivity, water stability, dimensional changes, and methanol permeability.

A novel wholly aromatic diamine, 2,2 '-bis(3-sulfobenzoyl)benzidine (2,2 '-BSBB), was successfully prepared by the reaction of 2,2 '-dibenzoylbenzidine (2,2 '-DBB) with fuming sulfuric acid. Copolymerization of 1,4,5,8-naphathlenetetracarboxylic dianhydride with 2,2 '-BSBB and 2,2 '-DBB generated a series of rigid-rod sulfonated polyimides. The synthesized copolymers with the -SO3H group on the side chain of polymers possessed high molecular weights revealed by their high viscosity and the formation of tough and flexible membranes. The copolymer membranes exhibited excellent oxidative stability and mechanical properties due to their fully aromatic structure extending through the backbone and pendent groups. They displayed clear anisotropic membrane swelling in water with negligibly small dimensional changes in the plane direction of the membrane. The proton conductivities of copolymer membranes increased with increasing IEC and temperature, reaching value above 1.25 x 10(-1) S/cm at 20 degrees C, which is higher than that of Nafion (R) 117 at the same measurement condition. They displayed reasonably high proton conductivity due to the higher acidity of benzoyl sulfonic acid group, the larger interchain spacing, which is available for water to occupy, taking their lower water uptake (WU) into account. Consequently, these materials proved to be promising as proton exchange membrane.

Aim To compare the remodeling of the alveolar process at implants installed immediately into extraction sockets by applying a flap or a ""flapless"" surgical approach in a dog model. Material and methods Implants were installed immediately into the distal alveoli of the second mandibular premolars of six Labrador dogs. In one side of the mandible, a full-thickness mucoperiosteal flap was elevated (control site), while contra-laterally, the mucosa was gently dislocated, but not elevated (test site) to disclose the alveolar crest. After 4 months of healing, the animals were sacrificed, ground sections were obtained and a histomorphometric analysis was performed. Results After 4 months of healing, all implants were integrated (n=6). Both at the test and at the control sites, bone resorption occurred with similar outcomes. The buccal bony crest resorption was 1.7 and 1.5 mm at the control and the test sites, respectively. Conclusions ""Flapless"" implant placement into extraction sockets did not result in the prevention of alveolar bone resorption and did not affect the dimensional changes of the alveolar process following tooth extraction when compared with the usual placement of implants raising mucoperiosteal flaps.
