The explosion of multimedia digital content and the development of technologies that go beyond traditional broadcast and TV have rendered access to such content important for all end-users of these technologies. While originally developed for providing access to multimedia digital libraries, video search technologies assume now a more demanding role. In this paper, we attempt to shed light onto this new role of video search technologies, looking at the rapid developments in the related market, the lessons learned from state of art video search prototypes developed mainly in the digital libraries context and the new technological challenges that have risen. We focus on one of the latter, i.e., the development of cross-media decision mechanisms, drawing examples from REVEAL THIS, an FP6 project on the retrieval of video and language for the home user. We argue, that efficient video search holds a key to the usability of the new ”pervasive digital video” technologies and that it should involve cross-media decision mechanisms.

Technology advances in hardware, software and IP-networks such as the Internet or peer-to-peer file sharing systems are threatening the music business. The result has been an increasing amount of illegal copies available on-line as well as off-line. With the emergence of digital rights management systems (DRMS), the music industry seems to have found the appropriate tool to simultaneously fight piracy and to monetize their assets. Although these systems are very powerful and include multiple technologies to prevent piracy, it is as of yet unknown to what extent such systems are currently being used by content providers. We provide empirical analyses, results, and conclusions related to digital rights management systems and the protection of digital content in the music industry. It shows that most content providers are protecting their digital content through a variety of technologies such as passwords or encryption. However, each protection technology has its own specific goal, and not all prevent piracy. The majority of the respondents are satisfied with their current protection but want to reinforce it for the future, due to fear of increasing piracy. Surprisingly, although encryption is seen as the core DRM technology, only few companies are currently using it. Finally, half of the respondents do not believe in the success of DRMS and their ability to reduce piracy.

Why do people become archivists? Historically (and anecdotally) it was a deep love of musty, old records that drew people to the profession. While there have been many other motivating forces that inspired would-be archivists, it is most often that one hears of people seeking jobs in archives for love of “the stuff,” as evidenced in Kate Thiemer’s blog post, Honest tips for wannabe archivists (2012). As a result of the continually advancing presence of digitized and born digital archival collections, the physical nature of archival “stuff” is changing. While there remains the physical imprint of digital information on floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, hard drives, and old computers; the aspects of these physical artifacts might not evoke the same visceral pull to the profession as musty, raspy, paper-based documents. In light of this shift in physical presentation of information, we are faced with the question: how does love of archival “stuff” translate to work in digital archives? What is and/or will be the pull to become a digital archivist? To answer these questions, we will perform a survey-based study where we will invite archivists who work with both traditional and digital archival material to answer questions related to the aspects of their work that inspired or motivated them to join the profession. What motivates people to become archivists? What aspects of digital archives do or can potentially motivate people to seek out a career as an archivist? What, if any, motivational factors for becoming a traditional archivist are the same as those for becoming a digital archivist? What, if any, motivational factors for becoming a traditional archivist are different from those for becoming a digital archivist? By answering these questions, we hope to expand the archival discussion on what it means to be an archivist in the digital age. What compelling intrinsic, evidential, or informational values are present in digital archival content that will draw professionals to the field? Are there other values inherent in digital content that are currently unexplored? The key to prosperity in today's world is access to digital content and skills to create new content. Investigations of folklore artifacts is the topic of this article, presenting research related to the national program „Knowledge Technologies for Creation of Digital Presentation and Significant Repositories of Folklore Heritage” (FolkKnow). FolkKnow aims to build a digital multimedia archive "Bulgarian Folklore Heritage” (BFH) and virtual information portal with folk media library of digitized multimedia objects from a selected collection of the fund of Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum (IEFSEM) of the Bulgarian Academy of Science (BAS). The realization of the project FolkKnow gives opportunity for wide social applications of the multimedia collections, for the purposes of Interactive distance learning/self-learning, research activities in the field of Bulgarian traditional culture and for the cultural and ethno-tourism. We study, analyze and implement techniques and methods for digitization of multimedia objects and their annotation. In the paper are discussed specifics approaches used to building and protect a digital archive with multimedia content. Tasks can be systematized in the following guidelines: * Digitization of the selected samples * Analysis of the objects in order to determine the metadata of selected artifacts from selected collections and problem areas * Digital multimedia archive * Socially-oriented applications and virtual exhibitions artery * Frequency dictionary tool for texts with folklore themes * A method of modern technologies of protecting intellectual property and copyrights on digital content developed for use in digital exposures.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce Digital Rights Management (DRM) and its implications for content producers, consumers, and libraries. Simply stated, DRM is a technology that allows copyright owners to regulate and manage their content when it is disseminated in a digital format, and it is the reason why some patrons cannot access some of the downloadable digital content provided by libraries. In the first part of this paper, we provide a short introduction to DRM by outlining the entities, the various technologies used as well as usage restrictions that come with DRM. In the second part of the paper are discussed the alternatives for the libraries, using DRM as a tool for library copyright policy and the main documents, which present the position of library organizations towards information legislation.

O projeto tem como objetivo desenvolver e avaliar um modelo que facilita o acesso para pessoas surdas ou com deficiência auditiva, o acesso ao conteúdo digital - em particular o conteúdo educacional e objetos de aprendizagem – a criação de condições para uma maior inclusão social de surdos e deficientes auditivos. Pretende-se criar um modelo bidirecional, em que permite a pessoas com deficiências auditivas, possam se comunicar com outras pessoas, com a tradução da Língua Gestual Portuguesa (LGP) para a Língua Portuguesa (LP) e que outras pessoas não portadoras de qualquer deficiência auditiva possam por sua vez comunicar com os surdos ou deficientes auditivos através da tradução da LP para a LGP. Há um conjunto de técnicas que poderíamos nos apoiar para desenvolver o modelo e implementar a API de tradução da LGP em LP. Muitos estudos são feitos com base nos modelos escondidos de Markov (HMM) para efetuar o reconhecimento. Recentemente os estudos estão a caminhar para o uso de técnicas como o “Dynamic Time Warping” (DTW), que tem tido mais sucesso do que outras técnicas em termos de performance e de precisão. Neste projeto optamos por desenvolver a API e o Modelo, com base na técnica de aprendizagem Support Vector Machines (SVM) por ser uma técnica simples de implementar e com bons resultados demonstrados em reconhecimento de padrões. Os resultados obtidos utilizando esta técnica de aprendizagem foram bastante ótimos, como iremos descrever no decorrer do capítulo 4, mesmo sabendo que utilizamos dois dispositivos para capturar dados de descrição de cada gesto. Toda esta tese integra-se no âmbito do projeto científico/ investigação a decorrer no grupo de investigação GILT, sob a coordenação da professora Paula Escudeiro e suportado pela Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT).

L'extensió de l'aplicació de les tecnologies digitals a les comunicacions acadèmiques ha estat tal que ha alterat el model de servei que les biblioteques acadèmiques havien estat oferint durant el darrer segle. Tenint en compte el creixement explosiu del contingut digital en el web, avui en dia no està gaire clar el que hauria de ser una biblioteca acadèmica. Aquest article és un intent de proporcionar a les biblioteques acadèmiques una estratègia per el que queda del primer quart de segle XXI. El model té cinc elements: 1) completar el pas de les col·leccions en paper a les col·leccions en format electrònic; 2) retirar col·leccions patrimonials ("legacy")impreses; 3) redistribuir l'espai de la biblioteca; 4) modificar l’orientació dels instruments, els recursos i els coneixements tècnics de la biblioteca i la informació; 5) traslladar el focus de les col·leccions de l'adquisició de fons a la gestió del contingut. Es tindran en compte cadascun dels elements de l'estratègia i les seves interaccions. Es d'esperar que el resultat proporcioni un mapa útil per les biblioteques acadèmiques i els campus als quals donen servei.

This paper attempts to study and analyze the tools and the information and communication services developed and offered by an evolving digital environment, as are virtual communities. It also seeks to observe the use that is made of all of this in function of to the objectives set out in different kinds of communities. In this way we want to verify whether virtual communities in Spain have reached maturity as tools for the creation and management of digital content. Specifically, we have looked at the diverse typology of these communities (leisure, business, and scientific-academic) and selected a sample of consolidated or paradigmatic cases in Spanish casuistry (Telepolis, CiudadFutura, RedIRIS, ICT) for each type.
