Two new species of Moenkhausia, one from the rio Tapajós and the other from the rio Xingu basins are described as apparently endemics of the Serra do Cachimbo. Both species, along with M. petymbuaba, share a distinct color pattern composed of large conspicuous dark blotches on the base of the body scales. Moenkhausia chlorophthalma, from rio Treze de Maio, a tributary to rio Curuá (rio Xingu basin), is distinguished by the presence of a proximal well delimited black area on the adipose fin and a green eye in life. Moenkhausia plumbea of the headwaters of tributaries of the rio Braço Norte, rio Tapajós basin is diagnosed by the presence of a dark longitudinal stripe across the eye and six branched pelvic-fin rays (vs. seven). Relationships of the new species with other Moenkhausia are discussed.

This work describes methods for the simultaneous determination of Cd and Pb by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry and As by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry in Brazilian nuts. The samples (~ 0.300 g) were digested to clear solutions in a closed vessel microwave oven. The pyrolysis and atomization temperatures for simultaneous determinations of Cd and Pb were 1100 and 2100 °C, respectively, using 0.5% (w v-1) NH4H2PO4 + 0.03% (w v-1) Mg(NO3)2 as chemical modifier. The limits of detection (3Δ) were 3.8 μg kg-1 for As, 0.86 μg kg-1 for Cd and 13 μg kg-1 for Pb. The reliability of the entire procedures was confirmed by peach leaves (No. 1547 - NIST) certified reference material analysis and addition and recovery tests. The found concentrations presented no statistical differences at the 95% confidence level.

Infrared-to-visible and infrared-to-infrared frequency upconversion processes in Yb(3+)-Tm(3+) doped PbO-GeO(2) glasses containing silver nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated. The experiments were performed by exciting the samples with a diode laser operating at 980 nm (in resonance with the Yb(3+) transition (2)F(7/2)->(2)F(5/2)) and observing the photoluminescence (PL) in the visible and infrared regions due to energy transfer from Yb(3+) to Tm(3+) ions followed by excited state absorption in the Tm3+ ions. The intensified local field in the vicinity of the metallic NPs contributes for enhancement in the PL intensity at 480 nm (Tm(3+) :(1)G(4)->(3)H(6)) and at 800 nm (Tm(3+) : (3)H(4) -> (3)H(6)). We report on energy transfer studies in terbium (Tb(3+))-europium (Eu(3+)) doped TeO(2)-ZnO-Na(2)O-PbO glass containing silver nanostructures. The samples excitation was made using ultraviolet radiation at 355 nm. Luminescence spectra were recorded from approximate to 480 to approximate to 700 nm. Enhanced Eu(3+) luminescence at approximate to 590 nm (transition (5)D(0)-(7)F(1)) and approximate to 614 nm (transition (5)D(0)-(7)F(2)) are observed. The large luminescence enhancement was obtained due to the simultaneous contribution of the Tb(3+)-Eu(3+) energy transfer and the contribution of the intensified local field on the Eu(3+) ions located near silver nanostructures.

Luminescence properties of Tb(3+) doped TeO(2)-ZnO-Na(2)O-PbO glasses containing silver nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated. The absorption band due to the surface plasmon resonance in the NPs was observed. Its amplitude increases with the heat treatment of the samples that controls the nucleation of the NPs. Tb(3+) emission bands centered at approximate to 485, approximate to 550, approximate to 585, and approximate to 623 nm were detected for excitation at 377 nm. The whole spectrum is intensified by the appropriate annealing time of the samples. Enhancement by approximate to 200% of the Tb(3+) luminescence at 550 nm was observed for samples annealed at 270 degrees C during 62 h. This enhancement effect is due to the local field amplitude that increases with the amount of silver NPs and their aggregates. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics. [DOI: 10.1063/1.3010867]

Objective: To evaluate treatment changes and quality of finishing occlusion in Class I patients treated with four premolar extractions. Material and Methods: Dental casts of 94 subjects (50 males and 44 females) were evaluated. Mean pretreatment age was 13.46 years, and mean treatment time was 2.09 years. The peer assessment rating (PAR) index was obtained from pretreatment and posttreatment dental casts. Results: The mean pretreatment PAR index of 29.46 was reduced to 6.32 at posttreatment stage, achieving a reduction of 78.54% with treatment. There was correlation between the initial PAR and correction during treatment, that is, the more severe the malocclusion the greater the treatment changes. Conclusion: The cases evaluated showed a high-standard orthodontic finishing.

It is reported in this work the preparation, characterisation and photoluminescence study of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) thin films co-doped with [Eu(tta)(3)(H(2)O)(2)] and [Tb(acac)(3)(H(2)O)(3)] complexes. Both the composition and excitation wavelength may be tailored to fine-tune the emission properties of these Ln(3+)-beta-diketonate doped polymer films, exhibiting green and red primary colours, as well as intermediate colours. In addition to the ligand-Ln(3+) intramolecular energy transfer, it is observed an unprecedented intermolecular energy transfer process from the (5)D(4) emitting level of the Tb(3+) ion to the excited triplet state T(1) of the tta ligand coordinated to the Eu(3+) ion. The PMMA polymer matrix acts as a co-sensitizer and enhances the overall luminescence intensity of the polymer films. Furthermore, it provides considerable UV protection for the luminescent species and improves the photostability of the doped system.

The temperature and compositional dependences of thermo- optical properties of neodymium doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystals and fine grain ceramics have been systematically investigated by means of time- resolved thermal lens spectrometry. We have found that Nd:YAG ceramics show a reduced thermal diffusivity compared to Nd:YAG single crystals in the complete temperature range investigated (80-300 K). The analysis of the time- resolved luminescent properties of Nd(3+) has revealed that the reduction in the phonon mean free path taking place in Nd:YAG ceramics cannot be associated with an increment in the density of lattice defects, indicating that phonon scattering at grain boundaries is the origin of the observed reduction in the thermal diffusivity of Nd: YAG ceramics. Finally, our results showed the ability of the time- resolved thermal lens to determine and optimize the thermo- optical properties of Nd: YAG ceramic based lasers. Neodymium doped and undoped aluminum oxide samples were obtained using two different techniques: Pechini and sol-gel. Fine grained powders were produced using both procedures, which were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Thermo-Stimulated Luminescence (TSL). Results showed that neodymium ions incorporation is responsible for the creation of two new TSL peaks (125 and 265 degrees C) and, also, for the enhancement of the intrinsic TSL peak at 190 degrees C. An explanation was proposed for these observations. SEM gave the dimensions of the clusters produced by each method, showing that those obtained by Pechini are smaller than the ones produced by sol-gel; it can also explain the higher emission supplied by the first one. Properties of hybrid films can be enhanced if their molecular architecture is controlled. In this paper, poly (p-phenylene vinylene) was mixed with stearic acid in order to form stable hybrid Langmuir monolayers. Surface properties of these films were investigated with measurements of surface pressure, and also with polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS). The films were transferred from the air-water interface to solid supports through the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, and the viability of the film as optical device was investigated with fluorescence spectroscopy. Comparing the fluorescent spectra for the polymer in solution, as a casting film, and as an LB film, the emission bands for LB films were narrower and appeared at lower wavelengths. The interactions between the film components and the design for the LB film may take advantage of the method to immobilize luminescent polymers in mixed ultrathin films adsorbed in solid matrices. Luminescence properties of Eu3+ doped TeO2-PbO-GeO2 glasses containing gold nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated. The emission spectra of the samples exhibited enhancement of Eu3+ luminescence due to the presence of gold NPs. The emission at 614 nm. due to the Eu3+ hypersensitive transition D-5(0)-F-7(2), is much influenced by the gold NPs and increases by approximate to 100%. for samples heat-treated at 350 degrees C during 41 h. Protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR-1) is a G-protein-coupled receptor that is overexpressed in solid tumors, being associated with several pro-tumoral responses including primary growth, invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis. Expression of PAR-1 in human leukemic cell lines is reported but the status of its expression in human leukemic patients is currently unknown. In this study we evaluated the expression pattern of PAR-1 in patients with the four main types of leukemia - chronic lymphocytic leukemia subtype B (B-CLL), acute lymphoblastic leukemia subtype B (B-ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Flow cytometry analyses show that lymphocytes from B-CLL patients express this receptor at similar levels to healthy individuals. On the other hand, it was observed a significant increase in PAR-1 expression in B-ALL lymphocytes as compared to B-CLL and healthy donors. Flow cytometric and real-time PCR demonstrated a significant increase in PAR-1 expression in granulocytes from CML patients in blast phase (CML-BP) but not in chronic phase (CML-CP) as compared to healthy donors. Finally, a significant increase in PAR-1 expression has been also observed in blasts from AML (subtypes M4 and M5) patients, as compared to monocytes or granulocytes from healthy donors. We conclude that PAR-1 might play an important biological role in aggressive leukemias and might offer additional strategies for the development of new therapies. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. The new macrocyclic ligand trans-6-(9-anthracenylmethylamino)-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecan-13-amine has been synthesized and characterised as its copper(II) complex and the crystal structure of this complex has been determined. Fluorescence of the anthracenyl group of the macrocycle is quenched in its free base form and when complexed with Cu-II. Fluorescence returns when Lewis acids such as H+ and Zn-II are added to solutions of the ligand, indicating that photoinduced electron transfer from the amine lone pairs is responsible for fluorescence quenching in the free base form. By contrast, fluorescence of the complex is quenched by intramolecular electronic energy transfer.
