Based primarily on archival evidence collected in Jamaica, this dissertation examined the nature of childhood in the plantation complex between 1750 and 1838, how colonial society and the slave community defined childhood, and how that definition changed over time. It proves how childhood and slavery influenced and changed each other during these years, with the abolitionist movement standing as the main catalyst for change. Although this project chronologically examined the changing nature of slave childhood in Jamaica through four shifts of Jamaican history, each chapter topically focused on slave childhood through the lenses of labor, family, resistance, race, status, culture, education, and freedom. ^ The research showed that although slavery forced slave children into an early adulthood, childhood was a contested process that changed with each generation of children. As the abolitionist movement motivated changes in planter opinion on the value of children to the plantation economy, planters placed increased responsibility on slave children to lead them towards economic stability and profitability. Meanwhile, slave children struggled to survive slavery by reinventing and modifying their ideas of family and kinship and reacting to their situation through various acts of resistance. Although slave parents gained many opportunities to raise their children on their own terms, they struggled to maintain control over that process as planters attempted to change the nature of African cultural identity in Jamaica by impressing Christian and English values on slave children. Under apprenticeship, childhood returned to its previous status as a liability in the eyes of the Jamaican planters. Yet, Jamaican children faced the prospect of an unwritten childhood, one that was free from planter control and gave Jamaican laborers hope for the future. In the end, this dissertation told the story of an overlooked childhood, one that was often defined by Jamaican planters, but frequently contested by the slaves themselves. ^

This paper focuses on the cultural identity of the St. Regis Akwesasne Mohawk Indians. First, it will explain my rational for choosing to examine the cultural identity of this particular group followed by the objectives of the research. The paper will give some history and background on the Akwesasne Mohawks. It will review the literature on cultural identity specifically focusing on the identity of Native People. Next, will be a review of the interviews conducted followed by an analysis and discussion of the data. Finally, the paper will conclude with some educational implications based on the research.

Mediante de un acercamiento cronolgico, esta disertacin analiza la funcin de la ideologa como herramienta poderosa para construir la nacin y moldear al futuro ciudadano en la narrativa infantil cubana pre y pos-revolucionaria. Aunque una tradicin y un proceso de formacin de identidad nacional anteceden la literatura infantil publicada antes del triunfo de la Revolucin, en los perodos posteriores existe una estrecha relacin entre el contexto social de los textos y su funcin ideolgica. Partiendo de La Edad de Oro (1889) de Jos Mart, este estudio se enfoca en los cambios socio-culturales que influyen en el desarrollo de una narrativa infantil nacional que transita del didacticismo ms frreo a una variada exploracin temtica. Por encontrarse entre la Colonia y la etapa revolucionaria, el perodo republicano ha recibido poca atencin crtica, marginado a veces de la herencia literaria de la nacin. Sin embargo, el anlisis de varios textos representativos en este perodo permite apreciar la integracin de un pensamiento cubano desde bsquedas y posiciones muy diferentes a las del perodo siguiente, de 1959 a 1989. A partir de 1990 una diversificacin temtica fomenta objetivos muy distantes del enunciado didctico. Este estudio concluye que en contraste con los pertenecientes a generaciones anteriores, en los escritores formados dentro de la Revolucin, especialmente a partir de la dcada del ochenta, existe un inters especial por abordar temticas inexploradas en la literatura infantil tradicional. El divorcio, la muerte, los conflictos generacionales y las diferencias raciales son slo algunos de los temas que matizan la narrativa infantil posrevolucionaria, cuyos presupuestos ideo-estticos, se encuentran intrnsecamente relacionados al contexto sociocultural.

The importance of the gastronomic heritage of any people is unquestionable and Portugal is particularly rich when it comes to sweets. Hence, the objective of this work was to give a contribution colour and texture, due to their importance for consumer acceptance. The samples were bought from a pastry in Viseu and produced according to the traditional recipe. Colour evaluation was made by a colorimeter and textural analysis by a texturometer. The results obtained allowed concluding that there were differences between the top burned area and the non-burned areas, as well as when comparing the ruffled with unruffled samples either regarding colour and also texture. The burned area was darker, with a more intense red and less yellow. As to texture, the ruffles samples were harder than the unruffled samples.

This thesis examines a design approach in landscape architecture in which cultural and historical values are reinterpreted in a contemporary urban environment. The site of this project is located in Managua's lakeside area, which was destroyed by hurricane Mitch in 1998. The lakeside area has been an attraction to Managua's residents because of its beautiful views and fresh breezes. The majority of Nicaragua's population is of indigenous descent; however, Managua's urban environment is predominantly of European influence. The pre-Columbian heritage of Nicaraguans is hidden in their cultural expressions, such as the names of places and religious rituals. This project provides a new lakeside area for Managua in which cultural identity in landscape architecture is represented in the use of the site and in a rescue of Managua's residents' pride in their pre-Columbian heritage. The lakeside renovation was planned using pre-Columbian design methodology and vocabulary to create a functional and environmentally sens~velandscape.

This research has been conducted within the realm of where todays digital media society and the timeless concept of cultural identity overlap. The aim of this thesis is to explore the nature of online cultural identity management. By focusing on the social media platform, Pinterest, this study considers the food-pinning behavior of a group of Americans living in Finland and connects their online actions with their cultural identity. Through an examination of Pinterest as a social space, and even a third place, the relative theoretical literature provides and interesting background for a contemporary discussion on the matter. Literature on food as a cultural marker is also brought into consideration. Using the methods of introspection and an adapted version of virtual ethnography, a study was conducted, and ultimately, the analysis of data obtained from the Pinterest boards of ten individuals shows that the vast majority of food-related information in this setting is US-sourced. A questionnaire provides further insight into the individuals Pinterest usage. I argue that pinning is an act of online identity management, whether it is a conscious act or a situational effect, and that using Pinterest maintains and even strengthens these individuals cultural identity as Americans. This study adds to current discussions pertaining to transnationalism, globalization, and online cultural identity, as well as opens channels for further research on this dynamic topic, which is needed to understand ourselves as cultural beings in the digital age.

A identidade goesa: uma, vrias ou nenhuma? A lingua materna e as experincias histricas da comunidade ancestral so componentes essenciais desse legado. Em caso dos goeses que vivem em Goa ou tiveram antepassados goeses, a matriz cultural indiana est sempre presente, mesmo que seja em forma mais ou menos diluida. A presena colonial portuguesa deixou a sua marca, tanto nos goeses catlicos, como nos goeses hindus. Sem esta componente dificilmente Goa poderia justificar o direito para o estatuto de Estado autnomo na unio indiana. E como com os goeses em Portugal? A consciencia importada das castas continua a jogar o seu papel nas vrias associaes em que predomina uma casta ou outra. Mas nada disso impede os goeses em Portugal de apreciar a carilada ou os cantares tradicionais de Goa. Nem perdem alguma oportunidade de visitar a sua terra natal.

Aquest projecte de recerca es proposa construir coneixement sobre les diverses formes en qu els adolescents de famlia immigrada elaboren la seva identitat cultural, amb la finalitat destablir pautes i propostes dintervenci educativa que els ajudin a evitar, a causa de la interacci social en contextos multiculturals, lexclusi social per motius dtnia o cultura. La recerca es du a terme en quatre fases. Una primera fase est destinada a recollir informaci qualitativa sobre com construeixen aquests adolescents la seva identitat cultural. La segona fase consisteix en elaborar, de forma fonamentada i dacord amb la informaci obtinguda, un programa dactivitats educatives per aplicar. Aquesta fase es complementa amb una tercera dexperimentaci del programa i avaluaci dels resultats obtinguts, per poder dedicar-se posteriorment a la quarta i ltima, centrada en la difusi entre tots els centres de secundria vinculats a lInstitut de Cincies de lEducaci de la UAB. El projecte es desenvolupa en el marc del Campus taca, una iniciativa de la UAB per acostar-se a lalumnat que cursa estudis dESO. El Campus taca pretn, mitjanant el desenvolupament de diverses activitats, que els alumnes de secundria es motivin a continuar els seus estudis en etapes postobligatries. Es treballa, per tant, amb lalumnat immigrat dels centres de secundria que hi participen.

El trabajo de investigacin aborda la evolucin de las prcticas etnobotnicas (PEB) tradicionales, la evolucin reciente de estas prcticas en un contexto de mutaciones en China en las ltimas dcadas y su valor como marcador de la identidad cultural (IC) de las minoras tnicas de la provincia China de Yunnan. Se trata de evaluar la realidad de la utilizacin, la preservacin y la evolucin de la etnomedicina en esta regin y especialmente de las PEB, aclarar las relaciones que se pueden establecer entre la IC y las PEB y por lo tanto se estudian los nexos de unin entre las PEB y la IC de las minoras tnicas de Yunnan (MEY).

Lestudi examina les relacions entre (1) les xarxes socials personals de la poblaci immigrant resident a Barcelona i (2) les seves identitats culturals mltiples. Lobjectiu principal de lestudi s entendre com el contingut i lestructura de les relacions socials dels immigrants facilita o dificulta (1) tenir un sentiment de pertinena a les noves cultures dacollida, la catalana i la espanyola, i (2) la integraci daquestes noves identitats socioculturals amb la seva identitat dorigen en una nova identitat bicultural cohesiva. El nostre plantejament inicial era que els immigrants amb xarxes socials ms diverses des del punt de vista de la seva composici cultural tindrien ms recursos socials i experincies cognitives ms diverses , factors que afavoreixen les identificacions mltiples i la participaci cvica. Els resultats de lestudi mostren que el grau didentificaci dels participants amb la seva cultura tnica o dorigen s fora alt i, en certa mesura, ms alt en comparaci amb les cultures dacollida ( catalana, cvica i espanyola). Tanmateix, el vincle dels participants amb les cultures dacollida (p. ex., la cultura catalana) s prou rellevant per a indicar una orientaci bicultural (catalana i tnica). Les anlisis de correlacions revelen que sentir-se catal no impedeix sentir-se part de la comunitat etnocultural dorigen. A ms, existeix una interrelaci entre l'orientaci cultural catalana i la identificaci amb les comunitats cviques locals. De la mateixa manera, tenir competncies en llengua catalana no va en detriment de les competncies en llengua castellana. Les anlisis tamb mostren que factors com lorientaci cultural catalana, ls del catal i la identificaci amb la cultura catalana tenen una correlaci positiva amb el grau de chohesio de la indentitat bicultural, afavoreixen el benestar psicolgic i disminueixen lestrs aculturatiu. Lanlisi de les xarxes socials mostra que la identificaci amb la cultura catalana, lorientaci cultural catalana i la integraci de la identitat sn factors clau per tenir xarxes socials ms diverses des del punt de vista tnic i lingstic, amb menys membres del collectiu dorigen, i amb subgrups o cliques culturalment ms heterogenis. La identificaci espanyola tamb prediu, en mesura ms reduda, la diversitat de les xarxes. Els nostres resultats contribueixen a la recerca actual i les teories sobre interculturalitat i identitat cultural.
