The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effect of three commercial mouthwashes on the corrosion resistance of Ti-10Mo experimental alloy. Experiments were made at 37.0 +/- 0.5 degrees C in a conventional three-compartment double wall glass cell containing commercial mouthwashes. Three mouthwashes with different active ingredients were tested: ( I) 0.05% sodium fluoride + 0.03% triclosan; (II) 0.5 g/l cetylpyridinium chloride + 0.05% sodium fluoride; (III) 0.12% chlorohexidine digluconate. The assessment of the individual effect of active ingredients was studied by using 0.05% sodium fluoride. Commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) was used as control. Microstructures from Ti-10Mo experimental alloy and CP Ti were also evaluated using optical microscopy. Ti-10Mo as-cast alloy shows the typical rapidly cooled dendrites microstructure (beta phase) while CP Ti has exhibited a metastable martensitic microstructure. Electrochemical behavior of dental materials here studied was more affected by mouthwash type than by Ti alloy composition or microstructure. In both alloys passivation phenomenon was observed. This process may be mainly related to Ti oxides or other Ti species present in spontaneously formed film. Small differences in passive current densities values may be connected with changes in film porosity and thickness. Protective characteristics of this passive film are lower in 0.05% sodium fluoride + 0.03% triclosan mouthwash than in the other two mouthwashes tested.

Zirconia-polymethylmetacrylate hybrids prepared by a sol-gel method were deposited by dip-coating on stainless steel to improve the resistance against wet corrosion. The effect of the concentration of polymethylmetacrylate and the number of coating applications on the microstructure and corrosion performance of coated samples was investigated. The microstructural properties of samples was analyzed by scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, adhesion tests and profilemeter measurements. The electrochemical corrosion was evaluated through potentiodynamic polarization curves at room temperature. Results show that the sample prepared with 17 vol.% of polymethylmethacrylate has a maximum corrosion resistance, smaller roughness, are hermetic and adherent to the substrate. This film increases the life time of the stainless steel by a factor 30. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Polysiloxane hybrid films were deposited on stainless steel by dip-coating using a sol prepared by hydrolytic co-polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-methacryloxy propyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS), followed by radical polymerization of methacrylic moieties. The TEOS/MPTS ratio was chosen equal to 2 and the Ce/Si ratio varied between 0.01 and 0.1. The effects of cerium concentration and valence (Ce(III) and Ce (IV)) on the structural features of polysiloxane films were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and (29)Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The corrosion protection of stainless steel by the hybrid coatings was investigated by XPS, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization curves, after immersion in saline and acid solutions. The NMR results have shown for Ce(IV) doped films a high degree of polycondensation of up to 89%. Electrochemical analysis has evidenced that hybrid films with the lowest Ce concentration act as an efficient diffusion barrier by increasing the corrosion resistance and reducing the current densities up to 3 orders of magnitude compared to bare stainless steel. The analysis of structural effects induced by Ce(III) and Ce(IV) species, performed by XPS, indicates that the improved corrosion protection of Ce(IV) doped films might be mainly related to the enhanced polymerization of siloxane groups. Ti-6Al-4V samples have been treated by PHI processing at different temperatures (400-800°C), treatment time (30-150 min) and plasma potential (100 and 420 V). Hardness measurements results showed an enhancement of the hardness for all implanted samples. XRD results detected the Ti 2N phase and the best corrosion resistance was found for the samples processed at higher temperature and lower PIII time.

Siloxane-polymethyl methacrylate hybrid films containing functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were deposited by dip-coating on carbon steel substrates from a sol prepared by radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate and 3-methacryloxy propyl-trimethoxysilane, followed by hydrolytic co-polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane. The correlation between the structural properties and corrosion protection efficiency was studied as a function of the molar ratio of nanotubes carbon to silicon, varied in the range between 0.1% and 5%. 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance and thermogravimetric measurements have shown that hybrids containing carbon nanotubes have a similar degree of polycondensation and thermal stability as the undoped matrix and exhibit and excellent adhesion to the substrate. Microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed a very good dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the hybrid matrix and the presence of carboxylic groups allowing covalent bonding with the end-siloxane nodes. Potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results demonstrate that CNTs containing coatings maintain the excellent corrosion protection efficiency of the hybrids, showing even a superior performance in acidic solution. The nanocomposite structure acts as efficient corrosion barrier, increasing the total impedance by 4 orders of magnitude and reducing the current densities by more than 3 orders of magnitude, compared to the bare steel electrode. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The influence of ethanol, sulfuric acid and chloride on the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel was investigated by means of polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Over the studied range, the steel corrosion potential was independent of H2SO 4 and NaCl concentrations in aqueous solution. On the other hand, in solution containing 65 wt.% ethanol and 35 wt.% water, the corrosion potentials were higher than those obtained in aqueous solution. Besides, the steel corrosion potential was affected by the addition of H2SO4 and NaCl in solution. In solutions with and without ethanol, plus 0.35 wt.% NaCl, the presence of 1 wt.% H2SO4 inhibited the appearance of pitting corrosion. © 2013 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the corrosion resistance of AuPdAgIn alloy, submitted to laser beam welding, in 0.9% NaCl solution, using electrochemical techniques. Measures of the open circuit potential (OCP) versus time were applied to electrochemical experiments, as well as potentiodynamic direct scanning (PDS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on AuPdAgIn alloy, submitted to laser beam welding in 0.9% NaCl solution. Some differences observed in the microstructure can explain the results obtained for corrosion potential, Ecorr, and corrosion resistance, Rp. EIS spectra have been characterized by distorted capacitive components, presenting linear impedance at low frequencies, including a non-uniform diffusion. The area of the laser weld presented corrosion potential slightly superior when compared to the one of the base metal. The impedance results suggest the best resistant corrosion behavior for laser weld than base metal region. This welding process is a promising alternative to dental prostheses casting.

Several alloys have been used for prosthodontics restorations in the last years. These alloys have a number of metals that include gold, palladium, silver, nickel, cobalt, chromium and titanium and they are used in oral cavity undergo several corrosion. Corrosion can lead to poor esthetics, compromise of physical properties, or increased biological irritation. The objective of this study was evaluated corrosion resistance of two alloys Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Ti in three types of mouthwashes with different active ingredients: 0.5g/l cetylpyridinium chloride + 0.05% sodium fluoride, 0.05% sodium fluoride + 0.03% triclosan (with fluor) and 0.12% chlorohexidine digluconate. The potentiodynamic curves were performed by means of an EG&G PAR 283 potentiostat/galvanostat. The counter electrode was a platinum wire and reference electrode was an Ag/AgCl, KCl saturated. Before each experiment, working electrodes were mechanically polished with 600 and 1200 grade papers, rinsed with distilled water and dried in air. All experiments were carried out at 37.0oC in conventional three-compartment double wall glass cell containing mouthwashes. The microstructures of two alloys were observed in optical microscopy. Analysis of curves showed that Ni-Cr alloy was less reactive in the presence of 0.12% chlorohexidine digluconate while Ni-Cr-Ti alloy was more sensitive for others two types of mouthwashes (0.5g/l cetylpyridinium chloride + 0.05% sodium fluoride and 0.05% sodium fluoride + 0.03% triclosan). This occurred probably due presence of titanium in this alloy. Microstructural analysis reveals the presence of dendritic and eutectic microstructures for NiCr and Ni-Cr-Ti, respectively.

The results of the investigation on Solution Heat Treatment of Plasma Nitrided (SHTPN) precipitation-hardened steel 15-5PH are presented. The layers have been obtained by the plasma nitriding process followed by solution heat treatment at different temperatures. The influence of the solution heat treatment after nitriding on the dissolution process of the nitrided layer has been considered. The nitrided layers were studied by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray microanalysis (EDX), and X-Ray diffraction. Micro-hardness tests of the nitrided layers and solubilized nitrided layers have been carried out and interpreted by considering the processing conditions. It was found that high nitrogen austenitic cases could be obtained after SHTPN of martensitic precipitation-hardened steel (15-5PH). When Solution Heat Treatment (SHT) was performed at 1100 °C, some precipitates were observed. The amount of precipitates significantly reduced when the temperature increased. The EDX microanalysis indicated that the precipitate may be chromium niobium nitride. When the precipitation on the austenite phase occurred in small amount, the corrosion resistance increased in SHTPN specimens and the pit nucleation potential also increased. The best corrosion result occurred for SHT at 1200 °C.

The purpose of this work is the deposition of films in order to increase the corrosion resistance of AISI 304 steel, which is a material used to construct the reactors for bioethanol production. This deposition inhibits the permeation of corrosive species to the film-metal interface. Thin films were prepared by radio-frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) method using plasmas of hexamethyldisiloxane/argon/oxygen mixtures excited by signals of different powers. The plasma was generated by the application of RF power of 13.56 MHz to the sample holder while keeping grounded the topmost electrode and the chamber walls. The effect of the RF power on the properties of the samples was investigated by perfilometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results of the corrosion resistance tests of the AISI 304 steel were interpreted in terms of the energy delivered to the growing layer by plasma excitation power.

Corrosion research in steels is one of the areas in which Mossbauer spectroscopy has become a required analytical technique, since it is a powerful tool for both identifying and quantifying distinctive phases (which contain Fe) with accuracy. In this manuscript, this technique was used to the study of corrosion resistance of plasma nitrided AISI 316L samples in the presence of chloride anions. Plasma nitriding has been carried out using dc glow-discharge, nitriding treatments, in medium of 80 vol.% H-2 and 20 vol.% N-2, at 673 K, and at different time intervals: 2, 4, and 7 h. Treated samples were characterized by means of phase composition and morphological analysis, and electrochemical tests in NaCl aerated solution in order to investigate the influence of treatment time on the microstructure and the corrosion resistance, proved by conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS), glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GAXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and potentiodynamic polarization. A modified layer of about 8 gin was observed for all the nitrided samples, independently of the nitriding time. A metastable phase, S phase or gamma(N), was produced. It seems to be correlated with gamma`-Fe-4 N phase. If the gamma(N) fraction decreases, the gamma` fraction increases. The gamma(N) magnetic nature was analyzed. When the nitriding time increases, the results indicate that there is a significant reduction in the relative fraction of the magnetic gamma(N) (in) phase. In contrast, the paramagnetic gamma(N) (p) phase increases. The GAXRD analysis confirms the Mossbauer results, and it also indicates CrN traces for the sample nitrided for 7 h. Corrosion results demonstrate that time in the plasma nitriding treatment plays an important role for the corrosion resistance. The sample treated for 4 h showed the best result of corrosion resistance. It seems that the epsilon/gamma` fraction ratio plays an important role in thin corrosion resistance since this sample shows the maximum value for this ratio. (c) 2008 Published by Elsevier B.V.
