Combinatorial libraries continue to play a key role in drug discovery. To increase structural diversity, several experimental methods have been developed. However, limited efforts have been performed so far to quantify the diversity of the broadly used diversity-oriented synthetic (DOS) libraries. Herein we report a comprehensive characterization of 15 bis-diazacyclic combinatorial libraries obtained through libraries from libraries, which is a DOS approach. Using MACCS keys, radial and different pharmacophoric fingerprints as well as six molecular properties, it was demonstrated the increased structural and property diversity of the libraries from libraries over the individual libraries. Comparison of the libraries to existing drugs, NCI Diversity and the Molecular Libraries Small Molecule Repository revealed the structural uniqueness of the combinatorial libraries (mean similarity < 0.5 for any fingerprint representation). In particular, bis-cyclic thiourea libraries were the most structurally dissimilar to drugs retaining drug-like character in property space. This study represents the first comprehensive quantification of the diversity of libraries from libraries providing a solid quantitative approach to compare and contrast the diversity of DOS libraries with existing drugs or any other compound collection.

This research paper sets up a typology of libraries managed by cultural centres abroad. Nearly 2,200 libraries linked to a dozen of different cultural organizations provide not only traditional services such as loan and access to printed and audiovisual materials but they also approach local citizens, offering help and services in matters of education, literacy, cooperation, social issues or development. These actions may fit under the label of cultural diplomacy actions. This paper analyses the relevance of those cultural centres and offers a classification through a table including networks of institutions of the thirty most significant cultural centres worldwide.

Aquesta Declaració afegeix noves perspectives a la primera "Declaració sobre la perspectiva actual i els usos preferits per a la selecció i adquisició de la informació electrònica" de l'ICOLC ("Statement of Current Perspective and Preferred Practices for the Selection and Purchase of Electronic Information") http://www.library.yale.edu/consortiastatement.html. La declaració original ha influït en les polítiques adoptades per consorcis de biblioteques de tot el món, i encara és considerada com una expressió vàlida dels temes importants sobre el desenvolupament de l'accés a la immensa col· lecció de bases de dades electròniques, llibres i revistes disponibles actualment. Des de que la Declaració original va ser redactada el 1998, han sorgit nous desenvolupaments –particularment les que fan referència a revistes electròniques- que tenen el potencial d'estimular o bé de dificultar el creixement de l'accés. Aquesta actualització conté recomanacions en algunes de les àrees més importants d'aquests nous desenvolupaments.

L'article presenta l'estat de la qüestió de la cooperació interbibliotecària -biblioteca nacional, biblioteques universitàries, especialitzades i públiques- a Catalunya entre l'any 1993, data de promulgació de la Llei del Sistema Bibliotecari de Catalunya, i el 2007. Prenent com a punt de partida la teoria del pacte social de Thomas Hobbes, s'ofereixen uns apunts històrics i terminològics, es mostra l'evolució de la cooperació pel que fa al model organitzatiu -sistemes, xarxes i consorcis-, els canvis en les activitats desenvolupades, els avantatges i inconvenients i les perspectives de futur.

El artículo analiza los consorcios de bibliotecas centrados en la adquisición de revistas electrónicas como una forma actualizada de cooperación bibliotecaria; muestra sus principios de actuación, basados en la teoría de juegos, así como los retos que su gestión interna presenta de cara a su permanencia como organizaciones.

A partir de la definición que de la cooperación ofrece la ciencia económica, este trabajo presenta el marco teórico-práctico de la cooperación entre bibliotecas. En primer lugar se presenta una base filosófica, utilizando la teoría del pacto social de Hobbes como modelo explicativo. En segundo, fundamentado en la Biblioteconomía tomada desde una perspectiva conceptual e histórica, se muestra el protagonismo de los bibliotecarios y de las asociaciones profesionales así como las razones económicas o tangibles, e intangibles o de infraestructura que mueven a las bibliotecas a cooperar. La descripción y análisis de experiencias cooperativas en tiempo de crisis muestra la evolución de estas prácticas.

Reflexión sobre la interacción entre políticas nacionales de información y proyectos de cooperación al desarrollo en el campo de las bibliotecas universitarias y de investigación. Se analiza la evolución del concepto políticas de información, su relación con la cooperación al desarrollo, y el papel central que durante casi setenta años ha tenido en la Unesco en dicha dinámica. Finalmente se reflexiona sobre escenarios de cooperación en los que los profesionales de las bibliotecas universitarias y de investigación de países en desarrollo podrían desarrollar proyectos alineados con las políticas nacionales de información.

El Library and Learning Support Working Group (LLSWG) és una xarxa europea de professionals de biblioteca i de la informació i educadors dins de l'Associació Europea d'Universitats d'Ensenyament (EADTU). EADTU és l'organització que representa tant les universitats obertes i d'ensenyament a distància com els consorcis nacionals d'institucions d'ensenyament superior actius en els camps d'educació de distància i e-learning. El 2005 l'Associació Europea d'Universitats d'Ensenyament de Distància (EADTU) presentava a la Comissió Europea una proposta de projecte sobre Mobilitat Virtual anomenada E-MOVE. El projecte incloïa, entre d'altres, un paquet de treball referent a biblioteca i suport a l'aprenentatge al context de mobilitat virtual. Aquest fou desenvolupat pel LLSWG de l'EADTU.

The aim of the present dissertation is to investigate the marketing culture of research libraries in Finland and to understand the awareness of the knowledge base of library management concerning modern marketing theories and practices. The study was based onthe notion that a leader in an organisation can have large impact on its culture. Therefore, it was considered important to learn about the market orientation that initiates at the top management and flows throughout the whole organisationthus resulting in a particular kind of library culture. The study attempts to examine the marketing culture of libraries by analysing the marketing attitudes, knowledge (underlying beliefs, values and assumptions), behaviour (market orientation), operational policies and activities, and their service performance (customer satisfaction). The research was based on the assumption that if the top management of libraries has market oriented behaviour, then their marketing attitudes, knowledge, operational policies and activities and service performance should also be in accordance. The dissertation attempts to connect all these theoretical threads of marketing culture. It investigates thirty three academic and special libraries in the south of Finland. The library director and three to ten customers from each library participated as respondents in this study. An integrated methodological approach of qualitative as well as quantitative methods was used to gain knowledge on the pertinent issues lying behind the marketing culture of research libraries. The analysis of the whole dissertation reveals that the concept of marketing has very varied status in the Finnish research libraries. Based on the entire findings, three kinds of marketing cultures were emerged: the strong- the high fliers; the medium- the brisk runners; and the weak- the slow walkers. The high fliers appeared to be modern marketing believers as their marketing approach was customer oriented and found to be closer to the emerging notions of contemporary relational marketing. The brisk runners were found to be traditional marketing advocates as their marketing approach is more `library centred¿than customer defined and thus is in line of `product orientation¿ i.e. traditional marketing. `Let the interested customers come to the library¿ was appeared to be the hallmark of the slow walkers. Application of conscious market orientation is not reflected in the library activities of the slow walkers. Instead their values, ideology and approach to serving the library customers is more in tuneof `usual service oriented Finnish way¿. The implication of the research is that it pays to be market oriented which results in higher customer satisfaction oflibraries. Moreover, it is emphasised that the traditional user based service philosophy of Finnish research libraries should not be abandoned but it needs to be further developed by building a relational based marketing system which will help the libraries to become more efficient and effective from the customers¿ viewpoint. The contribution of the dissertation lies in the framework showing the linkages between the critical components of the marketing culture of a library: antecedents, market orientation, facilitators and consequences. The dissertationdelineates the significant underlying dimensions of market-oriented behaviour of libraries which are namely customer philosophy, inter-functional coordination,strategic orientation, responsiveness, pricing orientation and competition orientation. The dissertation also showed the extent to which marketing attitudes, behaviour, knowledge were related and impact of market orientation on the serviceperformance of libraries. A strong positive association was found to exist between market orientation and marketing attitudes and knowledge. Moreover, it also shows that a higher market orientation is positively connected with the service performance of libraries, the ultimate result being higher customer satisfaction. The analysis shows that a genuine marketing culture represents a synthesis of certain marketing attitudes, knowledge and of selective practices. This finding is particularly significant in the sense that it manifests that marketing culture consists of a certain sets of beliefs and knowledge (which form a specific attitude towards marketing) and implementation of a certain set of activities that actually materialize the attitude of marketing into practice (market orientation) leading to superior service performance of libraries.

Introduction: Coordination through CVHL/BVCS gives Canadian health libraries access to information technology they could not offer individually, thereby enhancing the library services offered to Canadian health professionals. An example is the portal being developed. Portal best practices are of increasing interest (usability.gov; Wikipedia portals; JISC subject portal project; Stanford clinical portals) but conclusive research is not yet available. This paper will identify best practices for a portal bringing together knowledge for Canadian health professionals supported through a network of libraries. Description: The portal for Canadian health professionals will include capabilities such as: • Authentication • Question referral • Specialist “branch libraries” • Integration of commercial resources, web resources and health systems data • Cross-resource search engine • Infrastructure to enable links from EHR and decision support systems • Knowledge translation tools, such as highlighting of best evidence Best practices will be determined by studying the capabilities of existing portals, including consortia/networks and individual institutions, and through a literature review. Outcomes: Best practices in portals will be reviewed. The collaboratively developed Virtual Library, currently the heart of cvhl.ca, is a unique database collecting high quality, free web documents and sites relevant to Canadian health care. The evident strengths of the Virtual Library will be discussed in light of best practices. Discussion: Identification of best practices will support cost-benefit analysis of options and provide direction for CVHL/BVCS. Open discussion with stakeholders (libraries and professionals) informed by this review will lead to adoption of the best technical solutions supporting Canadian health libraries and their users.
