Necessary and sufficient conditions for choice functions to be rational have been intensively studied in the past. However, in these attempts, a choice function is completely specified. That is, given any subset of options, called an issue, the best option over that issue is always known, whilst in real-world scenarios, it is very often that only a few choices are known instead of all. In this paper, we study partial choice functions and investigate necessary and sufficient rationality conditions for situations where only a few choices are known. We prove that our necessary and sufficient condition for partial choice functions boils down to the necessary and sufficient conditions for complete choice functions proposed in the literature. Choice functions have been instrumental in belief revision theory. That is, in most approaches to belief revision, the problem studied can simply be described as the choice of possible worlds compatible with the input information, given an agent’s prior belief state. The main effort has been to devise strategies in order to infer the agents revised belief state. Our study considers the converse problem: given a collection of input information items and their corresponding revision results (as provided by an agent), does there exist a rational revision operation used by the agent and a consistent belief state that may explain the observed results?

We consider a generic basic semi-algebraic subset S of the space of generalized functions, that is a set given by (not necessarily countably many) polynomial constraints. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for an infinite sequence of generalized functions to be realizable on S, namely to be the moment sequence of a finite measure concentrated on S. Our approach combines the classical results about the moment problem on nuclear spaces with the techniques recently developed to treat the moment problem on basic semi-algebraic sets of Rd. In this way, we determine realizability conditions that can be more easily verified than the well-known Haviland type conditions. Our result completely characterizes the support of the realizing measure in terms of its moments. As concrete examples of semi-algebraic sets of generalized functions, we consider the set of all Radon measures and the set of all the measures having bounded Radon–Nikodym density w.r.t. the Lebesgue measure.

We continue the investigation of the algebraic and topological structure of the algebra of Colombeau generalized functions with the aim of building up the algebraic basis for the theory of these functions. This was started in a previous work of Aragona and Juriaans, where the algebraic and topological structure of the Colombeau generalized numbers were studied. Here, among other important things, we determine completely the minimal primes of (K) over bar and introduce several invariants of the ideals of 9(Q). The main tools we use are the algebraic results obtained by Aragona and Juriaans and the theory of differential calculus on generalized manifolds developed by Aragona and co-workers. The main achievement of the differential calculus is that all classical objects, such as distributions, become Cl-functions. Our purpose is to build an independent and intrinsic theory for Colombeau generalized functions and place them in a wider context.

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of symmetric equilibrium without ties in interdependent values auctions, with multidimensional independent types and no monotonic assumptions. In this case, non-monotonic equilibria might happen. When the necessary and sufficient conditions are not satisfied, there are ties with positive probability. In such case, we are still able to prove the existence of pure strategy equilibrium with an all-pay auction tie-breaking rule. As a direct implication of these results, we obtain a generalization of the Revenue Equivalence Theorem. From the robustness of equilibrium existence for all-pay auctions in multidimensional setting, an interpretation of our results can give a new justification to the use of tournaments in practice.

We calculate three- and four-point functions in super Liouville theory coupled to a super Coulomb gas on world sheets with spherical topology. We first integrate over the zero mode and assume that a parameter takes an integer value. We find the amplitudes, give plausibility arguments in favor of the result, and formally continue the parameter to an arbitrary real number. Remarkably the result is completely parallel to the bosonic case.

Two regions in the 3$\prime$ domain of 16S rRNA (the RNA of the small ribosomal subunit) have been implicated in decoding of termination codons. Using segment-directed PCR random mutagenesis, I isolated 33 translational suppressor mutations in the 3$\prime$ domain of 16S rRNA. Characterization of the mutations by both genetic and biochemical methods indicated that some of the mutations are defective in UGA-specific peptide chain termination and that others may be defective in peptide chain termination at all termination codons. The studies of the mutations at an internal loop in the non-conserved region of helix 44 also indicated that this structure, in a non-conserved region of 16S rRNA, is involved in both peptide chain termination and assembly of 16S rRNA.^ With a suppressible trpA UAG nonsense mutation, a spontaneously arising translational suppressor mutation was isolated in the rrnB operon cloned into a pBR322-derived plasmid. The mutation caused suppression of UAG at two codon positions in trpA but did not suppress UAA or UGA mutations at the same trpA positions. The specificity of the rRNA suppressor mutation suggests that it may cause a defect in UAG-specific peptide chain termination. The mutation is a single nucleotide deletion (G2484$\Delta$) in helix 89 of 23S rRNA (the large RNA of the large ribosomal subunit). The result indicates a functional interaction between two regions of 23S rRNA. Furthermore, it provides suggestive in vivo evidence for the involvement of the peptidyl-transferase center of 23S rRNA in peptide chain termination. The $\Delta$2484 and A1093/$\Delta$2484 (double) mutations were also observed to alter the decoding specificity of the suppressor tRNA lysT(U70), which has a mutation in its acceptor stem. That result suggests that there is an interaction between the stem-loop region of helix 89 of 23S rRNA and the acceptor stem of tRNA during decoding and that the interaction is important for the decoding specificity of tRNA.^ Using gene manipulation procedures, I have constructed a new expression vector to express and purify the cellular protein factors required for a recently developed, realistic in vitro termination assay. The gene for each protein was cloned into the newly constructed vector in such a way that expression yielded a protein with an N-terminal affinity tag, for specific, rapid purification. The amino terminus was engineered so that, after purification, the unwanted N-terminal tag can be completely removed from the protein by thrombin cleavage, yielding a natural amino acid sequence for each protein. I have cloned the genes for EF-G and all three release factors into this new expression vector and the genes for all the other protein factors into a pCAL-n expression vector. These constructs will allow our laboratory group to quickly and inexpensively purify all the protein factors needed for the new in vitro termination assay. (Abstract shortened by UMI.) ^

In the highly concentrated environment of the cell, polypeptide chains are prone to aggregation during synthesis (as nascent chains await the emergence of the remainder of their folding domain), translocation, assembly, and exposure to stresses that cause previously folded proteins to unfold. A large and diverse group of proteins, known as chaperones, transiently associate with such folding intermediates to prevent aggregation, but in many cases the specific functions of individual chaperones are still not clear. In vivo, Hsp90 (heat shock protein 90) plays a role in the maturation of components of signal transduction pathways but also exhibits chaperone activity with diverse proteins in vitro, suggesting a more general function. We used a unique temperature-sensitive mutant of Hsp90 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which rapidly and completely loses activity on shift to high temperatures, to examine the breadth of Hsp90 functions in vivo. The data suggest that Hsp90 is not required for the de novo folding of most proteins, but it is required for a specific subset of proteins that have greater difficulty reaching their native conformations. Under conditions of stress, Hsp90 does not generally protect proteins from thermal inactivation but does enhance the rate at which a heat-damaged protein is reactivated. Thus, although Hsp90 is one of the most abundant chaperones in the cell, its in vivo functions are highly restricted.

Bacterial shape usually is dictated by the peptidoglycan layer of the cell wall. In this paper, we show that the morphology of the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi is the result of a complex interaction between the cell cylinder and the internal periplasmic flagella. B. burgdorferi has a bundle of 7–11 helically shaped periplasmic flagella attached at each end of the cell cylinder and has a flat-wave cell morphology. Backward moving, propagating waves enable these bacteria to swim in both low viscosity media and highly viscous gel-like media. Using targeted mutagenesis, we inactivated the gene encoding the major periplasmic flagellar filament protein FlaB. The resulting flaB mutants not only were nonmotile, but were rod-shaped. Western blot analysis indicated that FlaB was no longer synthesized, and electron microscopy revealed that the mutants were completely deficient in periplasmic flagella. Wild-type cells poisoned with the protonophore carbonyl cyanide-m-chlorophenylhydrazone retained their flat-wave morphology, indicating that the periplasmic flagella do not need to be energized for the cell to maintain this shape. Our results indicate that the periplasmic flagella of B. burgdorferi have a skeletal function. These organelles dynamically interact with the rod-shaped cell cylinder to enable the cell to swim, and to confer in part its flat-wave morphology.

We review the recent progress on the construction of the determinant representations of the correlation functions for the integrable supersymmetric fermion models. The factorizing F-matrices (or the so-called F-basis) play an important role in the construction. In the F-basis, the creation (and the annihilation) operators and the Bethe states of the integrable models are given in completely symmetric forms. This leads to the determinant representations of the scalar products of the Bethe states for the models. Based on the scalar products, the determinant representations of the correlation functions may be obtained. As an example, in this review, we give the determinant representations of the two-point correlation function for the U-q(gl(2 vertical bar 1)) (i.e. q-deformed) supersymmetric t-J model. The determinant representations are useful for analyzing physical properties of the integrable models in the thermodynamical limit.
