A novel design of a computer electronically reconfigurable dual frequency dual polarized single feed hexagonal slot loaded microstrip antenna in L-band is introduced in this chapter. pin diodes are used to switch the operating frequencies considerably without much affecting the radiation characteristics and gain. the antenna can work with a frequency ratio varying in the wide range from 1.2 to 1.4. the proposed design has an added advantage of size reduction up to 72.21% and 46.84% for the two resonating frequencies compared to standard rectangular patches. the design also gives considerable bandwidth of up to 2.82% and 2.42 % for the operating frequencies.

The paper proposes an octagon shaped Microstrip Patch Antenna suitable for dual band applications. The striking features of this compact, planar antenna are sufficient isolation between the two operating bands and an area reduction of - 29% in comparison to a conventional circular patch antenna operating in the same band

An antenna which has been conceived as a portable system for satellite communications based on the recommendations ITU-R S.580-6 [1] and ITU-R S.465-5 [2] for small antennas, i.e., with a diameter lower than 50 wavelengths, is introduced. It is a planar and a compact structure with a size of 40×40×2 cm. The antenna is formed by an array of 256 printed elements covering a large bandwidth (14.7%) at X-Band. The specification includes transmission (Tx) and reception (Rx) bands simultaneously. The printed antenna has a radiation pattern with a 3dB beamwidth of 5°, over a 31dBi gain, and a dual and an interchangeable circular polarization

A modified microstrip-fed planar monopole antenna with open circuited coupled line is presented in this paper. The operational bandwidth of the proposed antenna covers the 2.4 GHz ISM band (2.42-2.48 GHz) and the 5 GHz WLAN band (5 GHz to 6 GHz). The radiating elements occupy a small area of 23×8 mm2. The Finite Difference Time Domain method is used to predict the input impedance of the antenna. The calculated return loss shows very good agreement with measured data. Reasonable antenna gain is observed across the operating band. The measured radiation patterns are similar to those of a simple monopole antenna.

The thesis explores the outcome of the exhaustive theoretical and experimental investigations performed on Octagonal Microstrip Antenna configurations. Development of the MATLAB TM backed 3D-Conformal Finite Difference Time Domain (CFDTD)Modeller for the numerical computation of the radiation characteristics of the antenna is the theme of the work. The predicted results are verified experimentally and by IE3D TM simulation. The influence of the patch dimensions, feed configurations, feed dimensions and feed positions upon the radiation performance of the antenna is studied in detail. Octagonal Microstrip Antenna configurations suitable for Mobile-Bluetooth application is dealt in detail. A simple design formula for the regular Octagonal geometry is also presented. A compact planar multi band antenna for GPS/DCS/2.4/5.8GHz WLAN application is included as appendix A. Planar near field measurement technique is explained in appendix B.

A planar antenna is introduced that works as a portable system for X-band satellite communications. This antenna is low-profile and modular with dimensions of 40 × 40 × 2.5 × cm. It is composed of a square array of 144 printed circuit elements that cover a wide bandwidth (14.7%) for transmission and reception along with dual and interchangeable circular polarization. A radiation efficiency above 50% is achieved by a low-loss stripline feeding network. This printed antenna has a 3 dB beamwidth of 5°, a maximum gain of 26 dBi and an axial ratio under 1.9 dB over the entire frequency band. The complete design of the antenna is shown, and the measurements are compared with simulations to reveal very good agreement.

The design of an ultra-wideband planar tapered slot antenna for use in a circular cylindrical microwave imaging system is pre-sented. The antenna was designed assuming high dielectric substrate material Rogers RT6010LM to achieve its compact size. The developed antenna element (50 X 50 mm(2)) features a 10-dB return loss bandwidth from 2.75 GHz to more than 11 GHz. The gain of the antenna is between 3.5 and 9.4 dBi over the 3-10 GHz band. The experimental tests showed that the manufactured antenna element supports transmission of narrow pulses with negligible distortions, as required in the microwave imaging system. This paper presents a generalized approach to design an electromagnetically coupled microstrip ring antenna for dual-band operation. By widening two opposite sides of a square ring antenna, its fractional bandwidth at the primary resonance mode can be increased significantly so that it may be used for practical applications. By attaching a stub to the inner edge of the side opposite to the feed arm, some of the losses in electrical length caused by widening can be regained. More importantly, this addition also alters the current distribution on the antenna and directs radiations at the second resonant frequency towards boresight. It has also been observed that for the dual frequency configurations studied, the ratio of the resonant frequencies (center dot r(2)center dot center dot r(1)) can range between 1.55 and 2.01. This shows flexibility in designing dual frequency antennas with a desired pair of resonant frequencies.

A square ring microstrip antenna can be modified for dual-band operations by appropriately attaching an open ended stub. The input impedance of this antenna is analyzed here using multi-port network modeling (MNM) approach. The coupled feed is included by defining additional terms in the model. A prototype antenna is fabricated and tested to validate these computations.

This paper proposes a hybrid scanning antenna architecture for applications in mm-wave intelligent mobile sensing and communications. We experimentally demonstrate suitable W-band leaky-wave antenna prototypes in substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology. Three SIW antennas have been designed that within a 6.5 % fractional bandwidth provide beam scanning over three adjacent angular sectors. Prototypes have been fabricated and their performance has been experimentally evaluated. The measured radiation patterns have shown three frequency scanning beams covering angles from 11 to 56 degrees with beamwidth of 10?±?3 degrees within the 88-94 GHz frequency range.

A novel technique for obtaining dual-hand circular polarization (CP) radiation of a single-feed circular microstrip antenna in proposed and demonstrated. By embedding two pain of arc shaped slots of proper lengths close to the boundary of a circular patch, and protruding one of the arc-shaped slots with a narrow slit, the circular microstrip antenna can perform dual-hand CP radiation using a single probe feed. A novel dual frequency design of a square microstrip antenna coaxially fed along the diagonal with a chip capacitor mounted at the bottom of the stub is introduced. This design provides enhanced area reduction and good cross-polarization levels. The antenna design can be used as a compact antenna system where limited size is a major requirement. The details of the antenna design and experimental results are presented
