Cambial activity and periodicity of secondary xylem formation in Cedrela fissilis, a semi-ring-porous species, were studied. Wood samples were collected periodically from 1996 to 2000. The phenology was related to climate data of the region. The cambium has one active and one dormant period per year. The active period coincides with the wet season when trees leaf-out. The dormant period coincides with the dry season when trees lose their leaves. Growth rings are marked by parenchyma bands that begin to be formed, together with the small latewood vessels, just before the cambium becomes dormant at the beginning of the dry season. These bands are added to when the cambium reactivates in the wet season. At this time, the large earlywood vessels of the growth rings are also formed. As these bands consist of both terminal and initial parenchyma, we suggest the general term marginal bands be used to describe them. The growth layers vary in width among and within the trees.

Crude extracts from roots, stems, branches, fruits and leaves of Cedrela fissilis were tested to verify their toxicity to Atta sexdens rubropilosa workers and to their symbiotic fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus. The workers that were fed daily on an artificial diet to which crude extracts from this plant were added had a higher mortality rate than the controls, especially for the hexane, dichloromethane and methanol crude extracts from roots (RH, RD and RM) and from leaves (LH, LD and LM). Fungal growth was inhibited by the hexane (RH) and dichloromethane crude extract from roots (RD). The RH, RD and FD crude extracts were fractioned and their fractions were tested. All the fractions tested presented toxicity to the ants and some fractions (RH-H, RH-D, RD-4 and RD-5) completely inhibited fungus development. The possibility of controlling these insects in the future using Cedrela fissilis compounds that can simultaneously target both organisms is discussed.

The chemical investigation of the fruits of Cipadessa fruticosa (Meliaceae) afforded the new limonoid cipadesin B and the known swietemahonolide. From the roots of Cedrela fissilis (Meliaceae) were isolated the limonoid 3β-acetoxycarapin, new as natural product, along with the triterpenes oleanolic and oleanonic acid. These compounds and other six mexicanolide limonoids previously isolated from C. fruticosa showed insecticidal activity against the leaf-cutting ants Atta sexdens rubropilosa. ©2005 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

Nine limonoids were isolated from Carapa guianensis and Cedrela fissilis. Among them, 1,2-dihydro-3β-hydroxy-7-deacetoxy-7-oxogedunin is a new compound. Moreover, the assignments of some chemical shifts of xyloccensin k have been corrected and 1H NMR data of 7-deacetylgedunin have been assigned for the first time. These isolated limonoids were assayed on Atta sexdens rubropilosa workers showing moderate insecticidal activities. ©2006 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

We aimed to evaluate the effects of nitrogen rates in early growth, SPAD index, content and accumulation of nutrients in cedar seedlings. The experiment was carried out in a plastic greenhouse and the seedlings were grown in plastic pots filled with 20 dm-3of Rhodic Hapludox, arranged inrandomized blocks with four replications. Rates of 0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 mg dm-3N were tested. Fertilization up to 160 mg dm-3N promoted increases in SPAD index and early growth of plants, beyond greater absorption of N,P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn. Overall, lower N rates limited growth but not the absorption of nutrients by cedar plants. In leaves, the only nutrien taffected was the B which their content was reduced with increasing of N rate. Increased of nitrogen fertilization changed the Cu distributionin plants, since increased Cu content in roots and reduced their content in stem. Higher N rates promoted higher accumulation of all nutrients due to the increase of dry matter. Nitrogen fertilization changed the dynamic of nutrient absorption in cedar. With 160 mg dm-3N, the amount absorbed followed the order: N>S>Ca>K>Mg>P>Fe>Mn>B> Zn> Cu.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic differences among three matrix groups of Cedrela fissilis based on quantitative juvenile variables on a progeny test to define seed collecting zones and use of seeds of this species in the study region as well as to evaluate genetic variability of the sampled material. A progeny test was established in a nursery with seeds from 48 seed trees collected in the municipalities of Rio Negrinho, Mafra and Sao Bento do Sul, state of Santa Catarina, and in the municipalities of Lapa, Rio Negro, Campo do Tenente and Antonio Olinto, state of Parana. Of the collected seed trees, 33 sampled trees were distributed in three sites and 15 trees were dispersed in the studied region. It was used a complete random block design, with 8 replicates and 20 plants per plot. Evaluated data included: emergency rate; seedling base diameter and height (61, 102 and 145 days after the seeds were sowed); seedling survival; number of leaves per seedling; aerial section dry mass and root dry mass; and the foliar area of the third fully expanded leaf measured from the apical meristem. The Maximum Restricted Likelihood Method (REML) was used, using the software SELEGEN for analysis. It was found that the juvenile characters are strongly genetically controlled and they can be used to estimate genetic variability of population samples of Cedrela fissilis. The three groups of trees spatially limited did not significantly differ among each other, allowing to conclude that the three areas are part of the same tree seed transfer zone.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar diferenças genéticas entre três grupos de matrizes de Cedrela fissilis a partir de variáveis quantitativas juvenis em teste de progênies, para delinear zonas de coleta e uso de sementes da espécie na região de estudo, bem como avaliar a variabilidade genética do material amostrado. Instalou-se um teste de progênies, em viveiro, a partir de sementes de 48 matrizes amostradas nos Municípios de Rio Negrinho, Mafra e São Bento do Sul, no Estado de Santa Catarina; e em Lapa, Rio Negro, Campo do Tenente e Antonio Olinto, no Estado do Paraná. Das matrizes coletadas, 33 encontravam-se distribuídas em três grupos espaciais e 15 dispersas na região. O delineamento em blocos casualizados com oito repetições e 20 plantas por parcela foi empregado. Os dados avaliados incluíram: índice de velocidade de emergência, diâmetro do colo e altura das mudas (aos 61, 102 e 145 dias após a semeadura); sobrevivência, número de folhas por muda, massa seca da parte aérea e da raiz e área foliar da terceira folha totalmente expandida a contar do ápice. A metodologia de máxima verossimilhança restrita foi utilizada para a análise estatística, com o auxílio do software SELEGEN. Verificou-se que os caracteres juvenis apresentam elevado controle genético, podendo ser utilizados para avaliação da variabilidade genética de amostras de populações da espécie. Os três grupos de matrizes delimitados espacialmente não apresentam diferenças genéticas significativas, sendo possível inferir que as três áreas pertencem a uma mesma zona de coleta e uso de sementes

Conservation of genetic resources is a recognised necessity for the long term maintenance of evolutionary potential. Effective assessment and implementation Strategies are required to permit rapid evaluation and protection of resources. Here we use information from the chloroplast, total genome and quantitative characters assayed across wide-ranging populations to assess genetic resources in a Neotropical tree, Cedrela odorata. A major differentiation identified for organelle, total genomic and quantitative variation was found to coincide with an environmental gradient across Costa Rica. However, a major evolutionary divergence between the Yucatan region and Honduras/Nicaragua identified within the chloroplast genome was not differentiated using quantitative characters. Based on these and other results, a three-tiered conservation genetic prioritisation process is recommended. In order of importance, and where information is available, conservation units should be defined using quantitative (expressed genes), nuclear (genetic connectivity) and organellar (evolutionary) measures. Where possible, information from range wide and local scale studies should be combined and emphasis should be placed on coincidental disjunctions for two or more measures. However, if only rapid assessments of diversity are possible, then assessment of organelle variation provides the most cautious assessment of genetic resources, at least for C. odorata, and can be used to propose initial conservation units. When considering effective implementation of genetic resource management strategies a final tier should be considered, that of landuse/geopolitical divisions. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. We compared within-population variability and degree of population differentiation for neutral genetic markers (RAPDS) and eight quantitative traits in Central American populations of the endangered tree, Cedrela odorata. Whilst population genetic diversity for neutral markers (Shannon index) and quantitative traits (heritability, coefficient of additive genetic variation) were uncorrelated, both marker types revealed strong differentiation between populations from the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica and the rest of the species' distribution. The degree of interpopulation differentiation was higher for RAPD markers (F-ST 0.67 for the sampled Mesoamerican range) than for quantitative traits (Q(ST) = 0.30). Hence, the divergence in quantitative traits was lower than could have been achieved by genetic drift alone, suggesting that balancing selection for similar phenotypes in different populations of this species. Nevertheless, a comparison of pair-wise estimates of population differentiation in neutral genetic markers and quantitative traits revealed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.66) suggesting that, for C. odorata, neutral marker divergence could be used as a surrogate for adaptive gene divergence for conservation planning. The utility of this finding and suggested further work are discussed.

Se caracterizó la estructura poblacional de C. salvadorensis en el Bosque de Cinquera. Para lo cual se establecieron 11 transectos de tamaño variable. Se registró una población de 163 individuos con una densidad de 61.9 ind. ha-1, un promedio de diámetro y altura de 31.4 ±15.95 cm y 10.55±3 m respectivamente. El área basal total fue de 15.85 m2. Las clases diamétricas y alturas superiores obtuvieron los mayores promedios de producción de frutos por árbol, existiendo una correlación positiva de 0.71 (P≤0.022) entre la producción promedio de frutos por clase diamétrica y una correlación de 0.97 (P≤0.000) para la producción de frutos por clase de altura. Se registró una producción total de 6,521 frutos con un promedio de 40 frutos por individuo. El promedio de semillas por fruto fue de 56.9±7.8, de las cuales el 76.98% son viables y 23.02% son inviables. El número de semillas por kilogramo se estimó en 11,521, el 72% son viables y 28% inviables. Se estimó una producción total de 25.93±3.05 Kg de semillas, 22.7±2.62 Kg son semillas viables y 3.23±0.44 Kg inviables. No se encontró evidencia de asociación entre los caracteres biométricos y peso delos frutos con la producción de semillas. De igual forma no hay asociación para las variables pH, contenido de P, K, Ca, Mg y N con la producción de frutos por árbol.El porcentaje de germinación promedio de la semilla fue de 51%. Siendo superior y estadísticamente significativo (P≤0.016) la germinación en el ambiente lumínico sombra. Se encontró diferencia significativa (P≤0.000) en el porcentaje de germinación entre los tres pesos de semillas sometidas a los ambientes lumínicos luz y sombra. Las semillas de mayor tamaño tuvieron mayor porcentaje de germinación que las semillas de menor peso. Los índices de esbeltez y de calidad de Dickson demuestran que las plantas sometidas al ambiente lumínico luz son de mejor calidad (P≤0.05), según t-Student.Los contenidos de K, Ca y Mg en el suelo son altos. No obstante, el P se encuentra en un nivel bajo o crítico. El contenido de materia orgánica es alto, y la relación C/N fue de 6.5.
Screening of Trypanosoma cruzi glycosomal glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme inhibitors

The inhibitory activity of crude extracts of Meliaceae and Rutaceae plants on glycosomal glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (gGAPDH) enzyme from Trypanosoma cruzi was evaluated at 100 μg/mL. Forty-six extracts were tested and fifteen of them showed significant inhibitory activity (IA % > 50). The majority of the assayed extracts of Meliaceae plants (Cedrela fissilis, Cipadessa fruticosa and Trichilia ramalhoi) showed high ability to inhibit the enzymatic activity. The fractionation of the hexane extract from branches of C. fruticosa led to the isolation of three flavonoids: flavone, 7-methoxyflavone and 3',4',5',5,7-pentamethoxyflavone. The two last compounds showed high ability to inhibit the gGAPDH activity. Therefore, the assayed Meliaceae species could be considered as a promising source of lead compounds against Chagas' disease.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da extração da madeira de seis espécies, quatro nativas (candeia, cedro, cerejeira e jacarandá-caviúna) e duas exóticas (E. citriodora e E. gumifera), em diferentes solventes, na resistência ao apodrecimento causado pelo fungo da podridão-parda Gloeophyllum trabeum. O material foi ensaiado na forma de serragem, em face da maior facilidade para os procedimentos de extração. Dentre os resultados, pode-se destacar a baixa perda de massa ocorrida na madeira de cedro (Cedrela fissilis), evidenciando sua elevada resistência natural ao fungo testado e, ainda, à incapacidade dos solventes utilizados na retirada de compostos que conferem resistência ao apodrecimento. As madeiras de candeia (Vanillosmopsis erythropappa), cerejeira (Amburana cearensis), jacarandá-caviúna (Machaerium scleroxylon) e de eucaliptos (Corymbia citriodora e Eucalyptus gummifera) também apresentaram elevada resistência natural, em função da baixa perda de massa ocorrida, quando expostas ao fungo G. trabeum. Essas madeiras, quando totalmente extraídas, apresentaram elevados valores de perda de massa. No que diz respeito ao material extraído por diferentes solventes de forma isolada, observou-se, na candeia, que o solvente mais eficiente na retirada de substâncias que conferem resistência ao apodrecimento foi o diclorometano. Com relação ao cedro, o mais eficiente foi o metanol. Na cerejeira, por meio da mistura de etanol/tolueno retiraram-se mais substâncias, ao passo que no jacarandá-caviúna foi o metanol. Nas madeiras de eucaliptos, o metanol foi mais eficiente na retirada de componentes tóxicos ao fungo utilizado neste estudo, devendo destacar ainda, no E. gummifera, a eficiência da água quente na retirada de tais compostos. No C. citriodora, os valores de perda de massa, em razão das extrações em água fria, em água quente, em diclorometano e ao natural (não-extraída), foram muito baixos.
