BACKGROUND: The effect of two different bioabsorbable collagen membranes on bone regeneration was assessed in standardized, membrane-protected calvarial defects in pigs. METHODS: Two standardized defect types (6 x 6 x 6 mm and 9 x 9 x 9 mm) were produced in the calvaria of pigs: empty defects without a membrane (group 1; eight defects per size); defects filled with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) without a membrane (group 2; eight defects per size); defects filled with DBBM and covered by a collagen membrane (group 3; eight defects per size); and defects filled with DBBM and covered by a cross-linked collagen membrane (CCM) (group 4; eight defects per size). Sacrifice took place 16 weeks after surgery, and the following parameters were analyzed: descriptive histology; semiquantitative histology (SQH), assessing bone regeneration in the whole defect area; and histomorphometric analysis of the percentage of bone and DBBM in the regenerated area at three different depth levels of the defect. RESULTS: Using SQH, both membrane types resulted in significantly better bone regeneration compared to groups 1 and 2, irrespective of the defect size (P <0.005), with no difference between the two membranes. In the histomorphometric analysis, the layer immediately below the surface exhibited a significantly higher percentage of bone in groups 3 (27%) and 4 (36%) versus the two other groups for the 9 x 9 x 9-mm defects. No such differences were apparent for the 6 x 6 x 6-mm defects or the other two depth levels (bottom and middle layer) for either defect size. CONCLUSIONS: The two collagen membranes tested significantly enhanced bone regeneration, especially in the superficial level of the calvarial bone defects. The prototype CCM did not provide any further advantage in the present animal model.

OBJECTIVES This study sought to describe the frequency and clinical impact of acute scaffold disruption and late strut discontinuity of the second-generation Absorb bioresorbable polymeric vascular scaffolds (Absorb BVS, Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, California) in the ABSORB (A Clinical Evaluation of the Bioabsorbable Everolimus Eluting Coronary Stent System in the Treatment of Patients With De Novo Native Coronary Artery Lesions) cohort B study by optical coherence tomography (OCT) post-procedure and at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months. BACKGROUND Fully bioresorbable scaffolds are a novel approach to treatment for coronary narrowing that provides transient vessel support with drug delivery capability without the long-term limitations of metallic drug-eluting stents. However, a potential drawback of the bioresorbable scaffold is the potential for disruption of the strut network when overexpanded. Conversely, the structural discontinuity of the polymeric struts at a late stage is a biologically programmed fate of the scaffold during the course of bioresorption. METHODS The ABSORB cohort B trial is a multicenter single-arm trial assessing the safety and performance of the Absorb BVS in the treatment of 101 patients with de novo native coronary artery lesions. The current analysis included 51 patients with 143 OCT pullbacks who underwent OCT at baseline and follow-up. The presence of acute disruption or late discontinuities was diagnosed by the presence on OCT of stacked, overhung struts or isolated intraluminal struts disconnected from the expected circularity of the device. RESULTS Of 51 patients with OCT imaging post-procedure, acute scaffold disruption was observed in 2 patients (3.9%), which could be related to overexpansion of the scaffold at the time of implantation. One patient had a target lesion revascularization that was presumably related to the disruption. Of 49 patients without acute disruption, late discontinuities were observed in 21 patients. There were no major adverse cardiac events associated with this finding except for 1 patient who had a non-ischemia-driven target lesion revascularization. CONCLUSIONS Acute scaffold disruption is a rare iatrogenic phenomenon that has been anecdotally associated with anginal symptoms, whereas late strut discontinuity is observed in approximately 40% of patients and could be viewed as a serendipitous OCT finding of a normal bioresorption process without clinical implications. BACKGROUND Drug eluting stents with durable polymers may be associated with hypersensitivity, delayed healing, and incomplete endothelialization, which may contribute to late/very late stent thrombosis and the need for prolonged dual antiplatelet therapy. Bioabsorbable polymers may facilitate stent healing, thus enhancing clinical safety. The SYNERGY stent is a thin-strut, platinum chromium metal alloy platform with an ultrathin bioabsorbable Poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) abluminal everolimus-eluting polymer. We performed a multicenter, randomized controlled trial for regulatory approval to determine noninferiority of the SYNERGY stent to the durable polymer PROMUS Element Plus everolimus-eluting stent. METHODS AND RESULTS Patients (n=1684) scheduled to undergo percutaneous coronary intervention for non-ST-segment-elevation acute coronary syndrome or stable coronary artery disease were randomized to receive either the SYNERGY stent or the PROMUS Element Plus stent. The primary end point of 12-month target lesion failure was observed in 6.7% of SYNERGY and 6.5% PROMUS Element Plus treated subjects by intention-to-treat (P=0.83 for difference; P=0.0005 for noninferiority), and 6.4% in both the groups by per-protocol analysis (P=0.0003 for noninferiority). Clinically indicated revascularization of the target lesion or definite/probable stent thrombosis were observed in 2.6% versus 1.7% (P=0.21) and 0.4% versus 0.6% (P=0.50) of SYNERGY versus PROMUS Element Plus-treated subjects, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In this randomized trial, the SYNERGY bioabsorbable polymer everolimus-eluting stent was noninferior to the PROMUS Element Plus everolimus-eluting stent with respect to 1-year target lesion failure. These data support the relative safety and efficacy of SYNERGY in a broad range of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. The use of slow release fertilizer has become a new trend to save fertilizer consumption and to minimize environmental pollution. Due to its polymeric cationic, biodegradable, bioabsorbable, and bactericidal characteristics, chitosan (CS) nanoparticle is an interesting material for use in controlled release systems. However, there are no attempts to explore the potential of chitosan nanoparticles as controlled release for NPK fertilizers. In this work chitosan nanoparticles were obtained by polymerizing methacrylic acid for the incorporation of NPK fertilizers. The interaction and stability of chitosan nanoparticle suspensions containing nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) were evaluated by FTIR spectroscopy, particle size analysis and zeta-potential. The FTIR results indicated the existence of electrostatic interactions between chitosan nanoparticles and the elements N, P and K. The stability of the CS-PMAA colloidal suspension was higher with the addition of nitrogen and potassium than with the addition of phosphorus, due to the higher anion charge from the calcium phosphate than the anion charges from the potassium chloride and urea. The mean diameter increase of the CS-PMAA nanoparticles in suspension with the addition of different compounds indicated that the elements are being aggregated on the surface of the chitosan nanoparticles.

Objective: To evaluate a comparison of open-flap debridement (OFD) with or without the use of enamel matrix proteins (EMP) for the treatment of infrabony defects. Method and Materials: Ten volunteers (38 infrabony defects) were randomized to receive OFD + EMP (test site) and OFD (control site). Clinical outcomes included mean changes in Plaque Index, Gingival Index, probing pocket depth (PPD), relative attachment level (RAL), gingival recession, width of keratinized tissue, and dental mobility at baseline and at 24 months. Results: A significant reduction of 4.21 +/- 0.97 mm was observed in PPD for the OFD + EMP group (from 6.30 +/- 0.99 mm to 2.09 +/- 0.97 mm) and of 3.28 +/- 1.23 mm for the OFD group (from 6.13 +/- 0.88 mm to 2.85 +/- 1.42 mm) (P < .001). The reduction in PPD was statistically significantly greater for OFD + EMP compared to OFD (P = .03). The mean RAL decreased from 13.26 +/- 1.88 mm to 7.57 +/- 2.05 mm for the OFD + EMP group (a gain of 5.69 +/- 1.96 mm) and from 13.37 +/- 1.71 mm to 8.13 +/- 1.34 min (P < .001) for the OFD group (a gain of 5.24 +/- 1.55 mm). Gingival recession was higher it) the OFD + EMP group than in the OFD group. The mean keratinized tissue significantly decreased from 4.41 +/- 1.39 mm to 3.63 +/- 1.54 mm for OFD flap group (P < .01). Conclusion: Both treatment modalities were efficient in improving RAL and PPD. Within groups, there was a significant reduction in keratinized tissue for OFD and a significant postoperative recession for the OFD + EMP group. Infrabony defects treated with OFD + EMP showed significantly more PPD reduction when compared to OFD. (Quintessence Int 2010;41:125-134)

In this work, plasticizer agents were incorporated in a chitosan based formulation, as a strategy to improve the fragile structure of chitosan based-materials. Three different plasticizers: ethylene glycol, glycerol and sorbitol, were blended with chitosan to prepare 3D dense chitosan specimens. The properties of the obtained structures were assessed for mechanical, microstructural, physical and biocompatibility behavior. The results obtained revealed that from the different specimens prepared, the blend of chitosan with glycerol has superior mechanical properties and good biological behavior, making this chitosan based formulation a good candidate to improve robust chitosan structures for the construction of bioabsorbable orthopedic implants.

Biomaterials have been extensively developed and applied in medical devices. Among these materials, bioabsorbable polymers have attracted special attention for orthopedic applications where a transient existence of an implant can provide better results, when compared with permanent implants. Chitosan, a natural biopolymer, has generated enormous interest due to its various advantages such as biocompatibility, biodegradability and osteoconductive properties. In this paper, an assessment of the potential of a developed innovative production process of 3D solid and dense chitosan-based products for biomedical applications is performed and presented. Therefore, it starts with a brief explanation of the technology, highlighting its main features. Then, several potential applications and their markets were identified and assessed. After choosing a primary application and market, its potential as well as its uncertainties and risks were identified. A business model suggesting how to materialize the value from the application was sketched. After that, a brief description of the market as well as the identification of the main competitors and their distinctive features was made. The supply chain analysis and the go-to-market strategy were the following steps. In the end, a final recommendation based on the assessment of the information was prepared.

Introduction: The use of bioabsorbable materials for orthopaedic useand traumatic fracture fixation in children has been poorly investigatedin the litterature and the effects on growing bones seem contradictory. The aim of the study is to compare the clinical and radiological resultsand evolution between bioabsorbable and traditional K-Wires for thetreatment of elbow epiphyseal fractures in children.Method: From jan. 2008 to Dec. 2009 21 children with similar fracturesand age were separated in two groups according to the way of fracturefixation: bioabsorbable K-Wire group and traditional K-Wire group.Follow-up was done at 3, 6 and 12 month post-operatively. Range ofmotion and elbow stability were measured for all patients. Theradiological evolution of the two groups were compared in term ofconsolidation, ossous resorption and radiolucencies. The clinicalresults were compared according to the Mayo Elbow Peformancescore. Controlateral elbow is compared with injured elbow in the twogroups. Results: In the bioabsorbable K-wire group, there were 10 children, including 5 girles and 5 boys with an average age of 9.5 years, rangingfrom 5 to 14 years. They were 7 external condylar fractures and3 epitrochlear fractures. In the traditional K-Wire group there were11 children, 2 girls and 9 boys with an average age of 7.6 years, ranging from 4 to 14 years. There were 10 external condylar fracturesand 1 epitrochlear fracture. At first follow up. The Mayo ElbowPerformance score was 93.8 (85-100 )for the bioabsorbable K-Wiregroup and 95.5 (85-100) for the traditional K-Wire group. In twochildren from the bioabsorbable K-Wire group there were transitoryradiolucencies along the wire tract on the x-ray, without clinicalmanifestation of it.We didn't see any premature closure of growingcartilage.Discussion: There is no significant differencies in term of clinical andradiological outcome between the two groups. The use ofbioabsorbable pins seems to be a good alternative to removabletraditional materials, avoiding a second operation.

Nanocomposite materials have been incorporated into biopolymers, (e.g. hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), to improve their physical and chemical properties and enable them to be applied in food packaging, especially for their biodegradable and renewable properties. With this addition, fruit puree has been incorporated into the films to confer nutritional properties besides color and flavor. Chitosan is of interest in the packaging field since it is a biodegradable, bioabsorbable, antimicrobial agent. Furthermore, chitosan nanoparticles have been widely explored for their interesting properties and potential applications in food packaging. This work was divided into two stages: (1) chitosan nanoparticle synthesis; (2) addition of nanoparticles into HPMC and papaya puree films. Addition of chitosan nanoparticles to HPMC and papaya puree films improved film properties: mechanical, thermal and water vapor barrier. We have developed a novel nanomaterial with great potential for application in packaging to prolong the shelf life of food.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the acellular dermal matrix (ADM) as a membrane for guided bone regeneration (GBR), in comparison with a bioabsorbable membrane. Material and methods In seven dogs, the mandibular pre-molars were extracted. After 8 weeks, one bone defect was surgically created bilaterally and the GBR was performed. Each side was randomly assigned to the control group (CG: bioabsorbable membrane made of glycolide and lactide copolymer) or the test group (TG: ADM as a membrane). Immediately following GBR, standardized digital X-ray radiographs were taken, and were repeated at 8 and 16 weeks post-operatively. Before the GBR and euthanasia, clinical measurements of the width and thickness of the keratinized tissue (WKT and TKT, respectively) were performed. One animal was excluded from the study due to complications in the TG during wound healing; therefore, six dogs remained in the sample. The dogs were sacrificed 16 weeks following GBR, and a histomorphometric analysis was performed. Area measurements of new tissue and new bone, and linear measurements of bone height were performed. Results Post-operative healing of the CG was uneventful. In the TG membrane was exposed in two animals, and one of them was excluded from the sample. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups for any histomorphometric measurement. Clinically, both groups showed an increase in the TKT and a reduction in the WKT. Radiographically, an image suggestive of new bone formation could be observed in both groups at 8 and 16 weeks following GBR. Conclusion ADM acted as a barrier in GBR, with clinical, radiographic and histomorphometric results similar to those obtained with the bioabsorbable membrane. Chitosan, a biopolymer obtained from chitin, and its derivates, such as chitosan hydrochloride, has been reported as wound healing accelerators and as possible bone substitutes for tissue engineering, and therefore these Substances could be relevant in dentistry and periodontology. The purpose of this investigation was to make a histological evaluation of chitosan and chitosan hydrochloride biomaterials (gels) used in the correction of critical size bone defects made in rat`s calvaria. Bone defects of 8 mm in diameter were surgically created in the calviria of 50 Holtzman (Rattus norvegicus) rats and filled with blood clot (control), low molecular weight chitosan, high molecular weight chitosan, low molecular weight chitosan hydrochloride, and high molecular weight chitosan hydrochloride, numbering 10 animals, divided into two experimental periods (15 and 60 days), for each biomaterial. The histological evaluation was made based on the morphology of the new-formed tissues in defect`s region, and the results indicated that there was no statistical difference between the groups when the new bone formation in the entire defect`s area were compared (p > 0.05) and, except in the control groups, assorted degrees of inflammation Could be Seen. In Conclusion, chitosan and chitosan hydrochloride biomaterials used in this study were not able to promote new bone formation in critical size defects made in rat`s calvaria. Some fibrous materials, for having properties such as biocompatibility, strength and flexibility, are of great interest for medical and pharmaceutical applications. Among these materials, the fabric made from polylactic acid (PLA) has received special attention, and beside to present these features, is derived from biological source, antimicrobial and bioabsorbable. One of the limitations of PLA is its low wettability and capillarity. Due to this, it is necessary to perform surface modification of the knitted fabric, increasing its hydrophilicity. This work aims to realize the plasma treatment at low pressure in order to increase the surface energy of the polymer. The work was divided into three steps: i) Influence of the gas ratio (oxygen and nitrogen) in the surface modification of PLA fabric after the plasma treatment, ii) physical characterization and physicochemical surface tissue; iii) Evaluation of the effect from current and gas ratio in the capillary rise of tissues and iv) Study of capillarity in yarns and fabrics. The results showed that better gas ratios were the atmospheres: 100% oxygen; 100% nitrogen and 50% oxygen and 50% nitrogen. The surface characterization showed changes in topography and introduction of polar groups which increased the wettability of the fabric. In another part of this study, it was found that the atmosphere containing only nitrogen gas showed the most capillary rise to a current of 0.15 A. The results in capillary yarns and fabrics showed that the thread reached equilibrium in a time much less than the fabric to an atmosphere of 100% nitrogen and 0.15 A. Current Plasma technology was effective to increase the hydrophilicity of PLA fabric, providing surface characteristics favorable for future application in the biomedical field
