We consider a dynamical model of a superfluid Fermi gas in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime trapped in a periodic optical lattice (OL) potential. The model is based on an equation for complex order parameter phi of the superfluid, which is derived from the relevant energy density and includes a self-repulsive term similar to phi(7/3). By means of the variational approximation (VA) and numerical simulations, we find families of stable one- and two-dimensional (I D and 2D) gap solitons (GSs) in this model. Chiefly, they are compact objects trapped in a single cell of the OL. Families of stable even and odd bound states of these GSs are also found in one dimension. A 3D GS family is constructed too, but solely within the framework of the VA. In the linear limit, the VA predicts an almost exact position of the left edge of the first band-gap in the OL-induced spectrum. The full VA provides an accurate description of families of I D and 2D fundamental GSs. We also demonstrate that a I D GS can be safely transported by an OL moving at a moderate velocity. We introduce a quasianalytic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with beyond mean-field corrections to describe the dynamics of a zero-temperature dilute superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime, where k(F)parallel to a parallel to << 1 with a the s-wave scattering length and k(F) the Fermi momentum, through the unitarity limit k(F)a ->+/-infinity to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime where k(F)a > 0. The energy of our model is parametrized using the known asymptotic behavior in the BCS, BEC, and the unitarity limits and is in excellent agreement with accurate Green's-function Monte Carlo calculations. The model generates good results for frequencies of collective breathing oscillations of a trapped Fermi superfluid.

Using coupled equations for the bosonic and fermionic order parameters, we construct families of gap solitons (GSs) in a nearly one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture trapped in a periodic optical-lattice (OL) potential, the boson and fermion components being in the states of the Bose-Einstein condensation and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superfluid, respectively. Fundamental GSs are compact states trapped, essentially, in a single cell of the lattice. Full families of such solutions are constructed in the first two band gaps of the OL-induced spectrum, by means of variational and numerical methods, which are found to be in good agreement. The families include both intragap and intergap solitons, with the chemical potentials of the boson and fermion components falling in the same or different band gaps, respectively. Nonfundamental states, extended over several lattice cells, are constructed too. The GSs are stable against strong perturbations.

It is pointed out that erroneous Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer model equations have been used by Haranath Ghosh in his recent treatment of time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconductivity. Consequently, his numerical results are misleading, and his conclusions are not to the point.

We study the effects of inhomogeneous pairing interactions and impurities in short-coherence-length superconductors. Within the Born approximation, the effects of pairing disorder and magnetic impurities are identical. The T-matrices for pairing disorder sites with and without an impurity give rise to bound states within the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) gap, consistent with scanning tunnelling microscopy results on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ with Zn or Ni impurities.

The isospin dependence of the effective pairing interaction is discussed on the basis of the Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer theory of superfluid asymmetric nuclear matter. It is shown that the energy gap, calculated within the mean field approximation in the range from symmetric nuclear matter to pure neutron matter, is not linearly dependent on the symmetry parameter owing to the nonlinear structure of the gap equation. Moreover, the construction of a zero-range effective pairing interaction compatible with the neutron and proton gaps in homogeneous matter is investigated, along with some recent proposals of isospin dependence tested on the nuclear data table.

La présente thèse traite de la description de systèmes complexes, notamment des polymères et des cuprates, par la théorie de la fonctionnelle de la densité. En premier lieu, la théorie de la fonctionnelle de la densité ainsi que différentes fonctionnelles utilisées pour simuler les matériaux à l’étude sont présentées. Plus spécifiquement, les fonctionnelles LDA et GGA sont décrites et leurs limites sont exposées. De plus, le modèle de Hubbard ainsi que la fonctionnelle LDA+U qui en découle sont abordés dans ce chapitre afin de permettre la simulation des propriétés de matériaux à forte corrélation électronique. Par la suite, les résultats obtenus sur les polymères sont résumés par deux articles. Le premier traite de la variation de la bande interdite entre les polymères pontés et leurs homologues non pontés. Le second se penche sur l’étude de polymères à faible largeur de bande interdite. Dans ce dernier, il sera démontré qu’une fonctionnelle hybride, contenant de l’échange exact, est nécessaire afin de décrire les propriétés électroniques des systèmes à l’étude. Finalement, le dernier chapitre est consacré à l’étude des cuprates supraconducteurs. La LDA+U pouvant rendre compte de la forte localisation dans les orbitales 3d des atomes de cuivre, une étude de l’impact de cette fonctionnelle sur les propriétés électroniques est effectuée. Un dernier article investiguant différents ordres magnétiques dans le La2CuO4 dopé termine le dernier chapitre. On trouve aussi, en annexe, un complément d’information pour le second article et une description de la théorie de la supraconductivité de Bardeen, Cooper et Schrieffer.

The proton and neutron S-1(0), pairing gaps and their isospin dependence in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter have been studied by the isospin dependent Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach and the BCS theory. We have focused on investigating and discussing the effect of three-body force. The calculated results indicate that as the isospin asymmetry increases, the density range of the S-1(0) neutron superfluidity is narrowed slightly and the maximum value of the neutron pairing gap increases 9 while the density domain for the proton superfluidity enlarges rapidly and the peak value of the proton gap decreases remarkably. The three-body force turns out to affect only weakly the neutron S-1(0) superfluidity and its isospin dependence, i. e., it leads to a small reduction of the neutron S-1(0) paring gap. However, the three-body force not only reduces largely the strength of the proton S-1(0) gaps at high densities in highly asymmetric nuclear matter but also suppresses strongly the density domain for the proton S-1(0) superfluidity phase.

Recentemente, tem sido questionada a validade do teorema de Migdal nos fuieretos dopados supercondutores. Motivados por esse problema, realizamos nesta dissertação uma revisão das propriedades físicas destes novos e notáveis materiais: os fulerenos e outros representantes desta família de compostos orgânicos que possuem estrutura geométrica de gaiola fechada. Em primeiro lugar abordamos, ainda que de maneira sucinta, alguns fundamentos da teoria microscópica BCS (Bardeen, Cooper e Schrieffer, 1961) da supercondutividade, tais como o problema da instabilidade do líquido de Fermi, a formação de pares de Cooper, o método da transformação canônica para demonstrar o aparecimento da interação efetiva atrativa entre os elétrons do par, as equações de Gor'kov demonstrando o surgimento do gap supercondutor, e a expressão BCS da temperatura crítica no limite de acoplamento fraco. Após, revisamos o trabalho realizado por Grimaldi, Cappelluti e Pietronero (1995), sobre a supercondutividade não adiabática nos fuieretos dopados, no qual são feitas correções de vértice para a interação elétron-fônon, usando o método perturbativo. Naquele trabalho eles utilizam um modelo de fônons de Einstein com uma única freqüência para caracterizar a função espectral de Eliashberg, necessária para obter tais correções de vértice Nossa proposta neste trabalho é generalizar este modelo por um constituído de várias Lorentzianas truncadas, centradas nas freqüências dos principais modos de vibração da rede cristalina: os intermoleculares, os ópticos e os intramoleculares. Encontramos como resultado deste estudo que as correções de vértice, com contribuição multifonônica, introduzem modificações substancias como um aumento da temperatura crítica e variação no coeficiente isotópico, dando resultados mais próximos dos obtidos experimentalmente, em contraste daqueles obtidos na teoria de Migdal-Eliashberg, sem correções de vértice.

An open question within the Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro theory for synaptic modification concerns the specific mechanism that is responsible for regulating the sliding modification threshold (SMT). In this conductance-based modeling study on hippocampal pyramidal neurons, we quantitatively assessed the impact of seven ion channels (R- and T-type calcium, fast sodium, delayed rectifier, A-type, and small-conductance calcium-activated (SK) potassium and HCN) and two receptors (AMPAR and NMDAR) on a calcium-dependent Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro-like plasticity rule. Our analysis with R- and T-type calcium channels revealed that differences in their activation-inactivation profiles resulted in differential impacts on how they altered the SMT. Further, we found that the impact of SK channels on the SMT critically depended on the voltage dependence and kinetics of the calcium sources with which they interacted. Next, we considered interactions among all the seven channels and the two receptors through global sensitivity analysis on 11 model parameters. We constructed 20,000 models through uniform randomization of these parameters and found 360 valid models based on experimental constraints on their plasticity profiles. Analyzing these 360 models, we found that similar plasticity profiles could emerge with several nonunique parametric combinations and that parameters exhibited weak pairwise correlations. Finally, we used seven sets of virtual knock-outs on these 360 models and found that the impact of different channels on the SMT was variable and differential. These results suggest that there are several nonunique routes to regulate the SMT, and call for a systematic analysis of the variability and state dependence of the mechanisms underlying metaplasticity during behavior and pathology.

This paper examines a popular music song (Heartbeats by Jose Gonzalez) as a sign system in television advertising. The study was conducted through qualitative questionnaires in connection to an audio-visual method of analysis called Masking. The method facilitates the analysis of isolated parts in the audio-visual spectrum by masking/hiding parts of the audio-visual totality.The survey had seven respondents where a hermeneutic epistemological approach was used. For the analysis Cooper's theory of brand identity (Practical and Symbolic Attitudes to Buying Brands) was used together with an interaction model for music in audio-visual advertising called "Modes of music-image interaction”. The results showed that the music was associated with values as genuine, honest, responsibility, purity, independence and innovation. The music's symbolic values helped to position the brand in a lifestyle context. The music also helped to express the target group’s identity and attitudes by being innovative and independent. It also enhanced the perception of the visual colour rendition in the film. In general the television advertisement perceived more positive and entertaining when the music was present. In other words the music's social and cultural position contributed to raise the film's credibility. A deeper social and cultural value was created in the movie through resonance between symbolic values of the music and symbolic values of the film.
