The CH local mode overtone spectrum of benzyl chloride in the visible and NIR regions studied by laser induced thermal lens and conventional NIR absorption is presented. The analysis shows that the −CH2Cl group is symmetrically oriented with respect to the benzene ring, thus finalizing one of the two possible conformational models predicted by electron diffraction studies. The aryl CH bonds have a slightly larger force constant than that in benzene.

Benzyl salicylate, benzyl benzoate and butylphenylmethylpropional (Lilial) are added to bodycare cosmetics used around the human breast. We report here that all three compounds possess oestrogenic activity in assays using the oestrogen-responsive MCF7 human breast cancer cell line. At 3 000 000-fold molar excess, they were able to partially displace [H-3]oestradiol from recombinant human oestrogen receptors ER alpha and ER beta, and from cytosolic ER of MCF7 cells. At concentrations in the range of 5 x 10(-5) to 5 x 10(-4) M, they were able to increase the expression of a stably integrated oestrogen-responsive reporter gene (ERE-CAT) and of the endogenous oestrogen-responsive pS2 gene in MCF7 cells, albeit to a lesser extent than with 10(-8) M 17 beta-oestradiol. They increased the proliferation of oestrogen-dependent MCF7 cells over 7 days, which could be inhibited by the antioestrogen fulvestrant, suggesting an ER-mediated mechanism. Although the extent of stimulation of proliferation over 7 days was lower with these compounds than with 10(-8) M 17 beta-oestradiol, given a longer time period of 35 days the extent of proliferation with 10(-4) M benzyl salicylate, benzyl benzoate or butylphenylmethylpropional increased to the same magnitude as observed with 10(-8) M 17 beta-oestradiol over 14 days. This demonstrates that benzyl salicylate, benzyl benzoate and butylphenylmethylpropional are further chemical components of cosmetic products which give oestrogenic responses in a human breast cancer cell line in culture. Further research is now needed to investigate whether oestrogenic responses are detectable using in vivo models and the extent to which these compounds might be absorbed through human skin and might enter human breast tissues. The morphology in the solid state of a series of triblock copolymers comprising a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) midblock and symmetric poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PBLG) end blocks has been studied using X-ray scattering and microscopy techniques. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on samples selectively stained with uranyl acetate provided clear assignment of morphologies for as-cast and annealed samples. The thickness of both PEG and PBLG domains was in good agreement with calculations based on the conformations of the respective chains, allowing for the crystal or amorphous state of PEG and the a-helical or P-sheet structure of the PBLG. Atomic force microscopy provided complementary information on surface morphology for several samples that was in good agreement with the structure observed by TEM. A morphology diagram was constructed. Cylindrical structures were observed for ordered samples with low f(PBLG), whereas at higher f(PLBG) there was evidence for broken lamellar and "hockey puck" nanostructures. Regular lamellae were observed for intermediate compositions.

1-Benzoyl-3-benzylguanidine and 1-benzoyl-3-benzyl-O-ethylisourea were synthesized in good yields (68 and 76%, respectively) from 1-benzoyl-3-benzylthiourea and benzoyl-ethylthiocarbamate in dry media conditions using KF-Al2O3 under microwave irradiation. Strong nucleophilic amines promoted the sulfur elimination by attack on the thiocarbonyl group in both thiourea and thiocarbamates to afford guanidines and isourea, respectively. Transesterification products were obtained from p-TsOH catalyzed reaction of thiocarbamate with alcohols under MW-solvent-free conditions. Very important non-purely thermal MW specific effects were evidenced and attributed to stabilization by coulombic interactions between materials and waves. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Whole cells of the marine fungi Aspergillus sydowii Gc12, Penicillium raistrickii Ce16, P. miczynskii Gc5, and Trichoderma sp. Gc1, isolated from marine sponges of the South Atlantic Ocean (Brazil), have been screened for the enzymatic resolution of (+/-)-2-(benzyloxymethyl)oxirane (benzyl glycidyl ether; 1). Whole cells of A. sydowii Gc12 catalyzed the enzymatic hydrolysis of (R,S)-1 to yield (R)-1 with an enantiomeric excess (ee) of 24-46% and 3-(benzyloxy)propane-1,2-diol (2) with ee values < 10%. In contrast, whole cells of Trichoderma sp. Gc1 afforded (S)-1 with ee values up to 60% and yields up to 39%, together with (R)-2 in 25% yield and an ee of 32%. This is the first published example of the hydrolysis of 1 by whole cells of marine fungi isolated from the South Atlantic Ocean. The hydrolases from the two studied fungi exhibited complementary regioselectivity in opening the epoxide ring of racemic 1, with those of A. sydowii Gc12 showing an (S) preference and those of Trichoderma sp. Gc1 presenting an (R) preference for the substrate.

The work presented in this dissertation deals with the coordination chemistry of the bis(benzyl)phosphinate ligand with vanadium, tungsten and cobalt. The long term goal of this project was to produce and physically characterize high oxidation state transition metal oxide phosphinate compounds with potential catalytic applications. The reaction of bis(benzyl)phosphinic acid with VO(acac)2 in the presence of water or pyridine leads to the synthesis of trimeric vanadium(IV) clusters (V3(µ3-O)O2)(µ2-O2P(CH2C6H5)2)6(H2O) and (V3(µ3-O)O2)(µ2-O2P(CH2C6H5)2)6(py). In contrast, when diphenylphosphinic acid or 2-hydroxyisophosphindoline-2-oxide were reacted with VO(acac)2, insoluble polymeric compounds were produced. The trimeric clusters were characterized using FTIR, elemental analysis, single crystal diffraction, room temperature magnetic susceptibility, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The variable-temperature, solid-state magnetic susceptibility was measured on (V3(µ3-O)O2)(µ2-O2P(CH2C6H5)2)6(py). The polymeric compounds were characterized using FTIR, powder diffraction and elemental analysis. Two different cubane clusters made of tungsten(V) and vanadium(V) were stabilized using bis(benzyl)phosphinate. The oxidation of (V3(µ3-O)O2)(µ2-O2P(CH2C6H5)2)6(H2O) with tBuOOH led to the formation of V4(µ3-O)4(µ2-O2P(Bn)2)4(O4). W4(µ3-O)4(µ2-O2P(Bn)2)4(O4) was produced by heating W(CO)6 in a 1:1 mixture of EtOH/THF at 120 ˚C. Both compounds were characterized using single crystal diffraction, FTIR, 31P-NMR, 1H-NMR and elemental analysis. W4(µ3-O)4(µ2-O2P(Bn)2)4(O4) was also characterized using UV-vis. Cobalt(II) reacted with bis(benzyl)phosphinate to produce three different dinuclear complexes. [(py)3Co(µ2-O2P(Bn)2)3Co(py)][ClO4], (py)3Co(µ2-O2P(Bn)2)3Co(Cl) and (py)(µ2-NO3)Co(µ2-O2P(Bn)2)3Co(py) were all characterized using single crystal diffraction, elemental analysis and FTIR. Room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed on [(py)3Co(µ2-O2P(Bn)2)3Co(py)][ClO4] and (py)3Co(µ2-O2P(Bn)2)3Co(Cl). The variable-temperature, solid-state magnetic susceptibility was also measured on [(py)3Co(µ2-O2P(Bn)2)3Co(py)][ClO4].

The applications of the primary allyl amines afforded by the acetyl derivative of Baylis-Hillman adducts of acrylate for the synthesis of heterocycles using robust reactions are described. In the first strategy a one-pot synthesis of 5-benzyl-4(3H)-pyrimidinones have been achieved via N-formylation of the amines in the presence of neat formamide followed by ammonium formate-mediated cyclization. These pyrimidinones have been demonstrated to be excellent precursor to the 4-pyridinamine derivatives. In the second strategy the synthesis of 2-benzylidene-2,3-dihydro-pyrrolizin-1-ones have been accomplished via treatment of allyl amine with dimethoxyfuran followed by saponification and PPA-mediated intramolecular cyclization.

A comparative study of the influence of three different acid solids as catalysts (conventional zeolites Z15c with Si/Al = 19.5 and Z40c with Si/Al = 48.2, and a hierarchical zeolite Z40c-H with Si/Al = 50.0) for the etherification of glycerol with benzyl alcohol was performed. The catalytic activity and selectivity of these zeolites was elucidated at different catalyst contents. Three different ethers (3-benzyloxy-1,2-propanediol, which is a mono-benzyl-glycerol ether (MBG) and 1,3-dibenzyloxy-2-propanol, which is a di-benzyl-glycerol ether (DBG) and dibenzyl ether (DBz) were identified as the main products. MBG was the major product of the reaction catalyzed by the microporous Z15c zeolite with low Si/Al molar ratio, whereas DBG was formed in higher yield with the use of microporous Z40c and hierarchical Z40c-H zeolites, both of them having a similar high Si/Al molar ratio (≈50). MBG is a value-added product and it is obtained with good yield and selectivity when using the conventional zeolite Z15c as a catalyst. Under the best conditions tested, i.e., 25 mg of catalyst for 8 h at 120 °C, a 62% of conversion was obtained without the need of solvent, with an excellent 84% selectivity toward the MBG and no formation of DBz.
