In their search for innovative policy solutions to complex social problematics, local governance practitioners will look to synergising specific policy guidance from government departments with conceptual scientific research outputs. UK academics are also now expected to emphasise the relevance of their research and to increase its utilisation by practitioners. Away from utilitarian pressures, academics from applied discipline, such as Public Administration and Local Government Studies are increasingly drawn to the benefits of co-produced research. Despite the pressure for more co-research there are few opportunities for practitioners and academics to nurture relationships that would support close collaboration. This paper looks at the opportunity for closer collaboration when practitioners undertake research degrees, in order to enhance their cognitive skills and develop greater scientific knowledge of particular policy domains. If this route to closer collaboration is to succeed, it will require academics to think differently about their relationship with practitioner-students.

Purpose: Dysmenorrhea is the leading cause of recurrent short-term school absenteeism among adolescent girls. Yet, studies of menstrual symptoms in the light of adolescent psychological background seldom appear in the recent literature. This study aims to determine whether adolescent girls with severe dysmenorrhea (SD) have different body perception on top of poorer psychological health. Methods: We analyzed data from the Swiss Multicentre Adolescent Survey on Health (SMASH 2002) among a nationally representative sample of adolescents (n = 7548; 3340 females) aged 16 to 20 years attending post-mandatory education. Dysmenorrhea was defined as presence of abdominal or back pain during menstruation on the last 12 months. The severity of dysmenorrhea was defined according to the impact on daily activity and was assessed by 3 questions on the way menstruations interfere with daily life: 1) "You feel well and have normal activities", 2)"you must stay at home" and 3) "you feel restricted in your school or professional activities". Studied variables were: depressive symptoms, suicidal attempt, sexual abuse, health perception in general, body satisfaction, desire to modify body shape, and disordered eating behavior (DEB) with restrictive or bulimic tendency. Controlling variables included socio-economic status (SES) as measured by both parent's level of education, gynecological age (age-age at menarche), academic track (student/apprentice) and age. Results: 12.4% (95% CI: 11.0-14) declared severe dysmenorrhea, 74.2% (95% CI: 71.8-76.5) mild to moderate dysmenorrhea and 13,4% (95% CI: 11.5-15.5) had no dysmenorrhea. Compared to their peers, controlling for confounding variables, subjects with SD were more numerous to report depressive symptoms (AOR: 1.73; 95% CI: 1.39-2.15), to feel in poor health (AOR: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.14-1.81). Moreover, the proportion of those reporting dissatisfaction with their body appearance was higher (AOR: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.00-2.18). Conclusion: Patients with SD not only show a different profile than their peers in terms of their mental health and health perception, but also a distinct relation to their body. Therefore clinicians should pay particular attention to patients with SD and offer them a global evaluation keeping in mind what can be associated with SD.

The objective of this study was to characterize weapon-carrying adolescents and to assess whether weapon carriers differ from weapon users. Data were drawn from a cross-sectional school-based survey of 7548 adolescents aged 16-20 years in Switzerland. Youths carrying a weapon were compared with those who do not. Subsequently, weapon carriers were divided into those who had used it in a fight and those who had not. Individual, family, school and social factors were analyzed using bivariate and stepwise multivariate analysis. For both genders, delinquent behavior and being victim of physical violence were associated with weapon carrying. For males, quarreling while intoxicated, being an apprentice, being sensation seekers, having a tattoo, having a poor relationship with parents and practicing unsafe sex were also related to weapon carrying. Compared with weapon carriers, female weapon users were more likely to be regular smokers. Male weapon users were foreign born, urban and apprentices; had poor school connectedness; practiced unsafe sex and quarreled while intoxicated. Carrying a weapon is a relatively frequent behavior among youths in Switzerland and a sizeable proportion of weapon carriers have used it in a fight. Weapon carrying should be part of the clinical assessment and preventive counseling of adolescents. Preventive programs specific for at-risk youth groups need to be developed.

In Switzerland, the majority of students are oriented towards professional training after compulsory schooling. At this stage, one of the biggest challenges for them is to find an apprenticeship position. Matching supply and demand is a complex process that not only excludes some students from having direct access to professional training but also forces them to make early choices regarding their future sector of employment. So, how does one find an apprenticeship? And what do the students' descriptions of their search for apprenticeships reveal about the institutional determinants of social inequalities at play in the system? Based on 29 interviews conducted in 2014 with 23 apprentices and 6 recruiters in the Canton of Vaud, this article interrogates how the dimensions of educational and social trajectories combine to affect access to apprenticeships and are accentuated by recruiters using a "hidden curriculum" during the recruitment process. A hidden curriculum consists of knowledge and skills not taught by the educational institution but which appear decisive in obtaining an apprenticeship. By analysing the contrasting experiences of students in their search for an apprenticeship, we identify four types of trajectories that explain different types of school-to-apprenticeship transitions. We show how these determinants are reinforced by the "hidden curriculum" of recruitment based on the soft skills of feeling, autonomy, anticipation and reflexivity that are assessed in the context of recruitment interactions. The discussion section debates how the criteria that appear to be used to identify the "right apprentice" tend to (re)produce inequalities between students. This not only depends on their academic results but also on their social and cultural skills, their ability to anticipate their choices and, more widely, their ability to be a subject in their recruitment search. "The Subject is neither the individual, nor the self, but the work through which an individual transforms into an actor, meaning an agent able to transform his/her situation instead of reproducing it." (Touraine, 1992, p.476).
