Titania sols were prepared by acid hydrolysis of a TiCl4 precursor instead of titanium alkoxides. The effect of acid concentration on the particle size and stability of sol was investigated. Stable titania sols with mean particle size of 14 nm could be obtained when the H+/Ti molar ratio was 0.5. The titania sols were modified with Pt, SiO2, ZrO2, WO3 and MoO3 to prepare a series of modified catalysts, which were used for the photocatalytic oxidation of formaldehyde at 37 degreesC. They showed different photocatalytic activities due to the influence of the additives. Comparing with pure TiO2, the addition of silica or zirconia increased the photocatalytic activity, while the addition of Pt and MoO3 decreased the activity, and the addition Of WO3 had little effect on the activity. It is of great significance that the conversion of formaldehyde was increased up to 94% over the SiO2-TiO2 catalyst. The increased activity was partly due to higher surface area and porosity or smaller crystallite size. A comparison of our catalyst compositions with the literature in this field suggested that the difference in activity due to the addition of a second metal oxide maybe caused by the surface chemistry of the catalysts, particularly the acidity. The reaction of tris(pentafluorophenyl)phosphine [5] with the nucleophiles dimethyl formamide (DMF), hexamethylphosphoric triamide (HMPA), diethyl formamide (DEF), hexaethylphosphoric triamide (HEPA), hydrazine, N,N-dimethyl hydrazine (in presence and/or absence of KF), phenylhydrazine, ammonium hydroxide, formamide, aniline, sodium hydrogen sulfide, and hexaethylphosphorous triamide was investigated. The reaction of [5] with DMF and HMPA gave the same product, namely tris-[4-(N,N-dimethylamino)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl]phosphine [12] but in higher yield in the case of HMPA. Compound (5] also reacted with DEF to give tris[4-(N,N-diethylamino)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl] phosphine [14]. When [51 was treated with HEPA, it gave a mixture of bis(pentafluorophe~yl)-(N,N-diethylamino-tetrafluorophenyl)phosphine, pentafluorophenyl-bis-(N,N-diethylamino-tetrafluorophenyl)phosphine and tris (N,N-diethylamino-tetrafluorophenyl)phosphine. Treatment of [5] with aqueeus hydrazine solution in excess ethanol gave tris(4-hydrazo-2,3,4,6-tetrafluorophenyl)phosphine [1s1 in high yield while reaction with aqueous hydrazine led to C-P cleavage and production of tetrafluorophenyl hydrazine. With N,N-dimethyl hydrazine, [5] gave tris(4-N,N-dimethylhydrazine-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl) phosphine {20j. The latter could be obtained in higher yield and shorter reaction time, by the addition of KF. The reaction of compound {51 with phenylhydrazine in THF gave bis(pentafluorophe~yl)-4-S-phenylhydrazino- 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl phosphine [22] in low yield. Reaction of [5] with ammonium hydroxide in THF at high pressure in the presence of KF gave tris-~4-amino-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)phosphine [25]. Similarly, formamide led to a mixture of (C6F4NHZ)3P, (C6F4NHZ)ZPC6FS, (C6F4NHZ)ZPC6F4NHCHO, and C6F4NHZP(C6Fs)(C6F4NHCHO). When [5] was treated with aniline, a mixture of mono-, di-, and tri-substituted products was obtained. Sodium hydrogen sulfide in ethylene glycol/ pyridine led to C-P cleavage and the isolation of pentafluorobenzene and tetrafluorothiophenol. Reaction of [5] and its oxide [35] with different alkoxides in the corresponding alcohols led mainly to C-P bond cleavage products, with the exception of one case where sodium methoxide was used in ether, and which led to tris-(4-methoxy-2,3,9,6-tetrafluorophenyl)phosphine [37]. On the basis of various spectroscopic data, it was concluded that the para position in compound [5] was generally the favoured site of attack.

The magnetic behavior of polycrystalline yttrium orthoferrite was studied from the experimental and theoretical points of view. Magnetization measurements up to 170 kOe were carried out on a single-phase YFeO3 sample synthesized from heterobimetallic alkoxides. The complex interplay between weak-ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, observed in the experimental M(H) curves, was successfully simulated by locally minimizing the magnetic energy of two interacting Fe sublattices. The resulting values of exchange field (H-E = 5590 kOe), anisotropy field (H-A = 0.5 kOe) and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya antisymmetric field (H-D = 149 kOe) are in good agreement with previous reports on this system. Tetra-alkoxysilanes are common and useful reagents in sol-gel processes and understanding their reactivity is important in the design of new materials. The mechanism of gas-phase reactions that mimic alcoholyis of Si(OMe)(4) (usually known as TMOS) under acidic conditions have been studied by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance techniques and density functional calculations at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level. The proton affinity of TMOS has been estimated at 836.4 kJ mol(-1) and protonation of TMOS gives rise to an ionic species that is best represented as trimethoxysilyl cations associated with a methanol molecule. Protonated TMOS undergoes rapid and sequential substitution of the methoxy groups in the gas-phase upon reaction with alcohols. The calculated energy profile of the reaction indicates that the substitution reaction through an S(N)2 type mechanism may be more favorable than frontal attack at silicon. Furthermore, the sequential substitution reactions are promoted by a mechanism that involves proton shuttle from the most favorable protonation site to the oxygen of the departing group mediated by the neutral reagent molecule.

In this work we investigated the synthesis of composite organic and inorganic membranes for proton conduction. Particles derived from metal alkoxides (M(OR)n) sol-gel processes (Ti, Zr, W with phosphoric acid) were embedded in polymeric matrices of poly-vinyl alcohol, (3-glycidoxypropyl)-trimethoxysilane and ethylene glycol. The structure of the composite membranes was complex as several IR peaks were convoluted, indicating the assignment of several functional groups. However, the peaks assigned to OH groups reduced in intensity in the composite membranes, indicating that cross-linking of hydroxyl groups in the organic and inorganic phases of the membrane may have occurred. The particles allowed for re-arrangement of the polymer matrix, as crystallinity was reduced compared to a polymer blank membrane. The composite membrane process resulted in homogeneous dispersion of nanoparticles into the polymer film. Proton conduction of the inorganic phase was mainly dominated by titania. Binary mixtures of titania phosphate (sample name TiP) resulted in proton conduction of 7.15 × 10−2 S.cm−1, one order of magnitude higher than zirconia phosphate (ZrP). The addition of Zr and W to TiP forming ternary or quaternary phases also led to lower proton conduction as compared to TiP. Similar trends were also observed for the composite membranes, though the TiP composite membrane proton conduction reduced after several hours of testing at 50°C, which was mainly attributed to acid leaching.

The sol-gel method combined with a spin-coating technique has been successfully applied for the preparation of rare-earth doped silica:germania films used for the fabrication of erbium-doped waveguide amplifiers (EDWA), presenting several advantages over other methods for the preparation of thin films. As with other methods, the sol-gel route also shows some drawbacks, such as cracks related to the thickness of silica films and high hydrolysis rate of certain precursors such as germanium alkoxides. This article describes the preparation and optical characterization of erbium and ytterbium co-doped SiO2:GeO2 crack-free thick films prepared by the sol-gel route combined with a spin-coating technique using a chemically stable non-aqueous germanium oxide solution as an alternative precursor. The non-crystalline films obtained are planar waveguides exhibiting a single mode at 1,550 nm with an average thickness of 3.9 mu m presenting low percentages of porosity evaluated by the Lorentz-Lorenz Effective Medium Approximation, and low stress, according to the refractive index values measured in both transversal electric and magnetic polarizations. Weakly confining core layers (0.3% < Delta n < 0.75%) were obtained according to the refractive index difference between the core and buffer layers, suggesting that low-loss coupling EDWA may be obtained. The life time of the erbium I-4(13/2) metastable state was measured as a function of erbium concentration in different systems and based on these values it is possible to infer that the hydroxyl group was reduced and the formation of rare-earth clusters was avoided.

Acetylacetone has been used as a chemical modifier for the synthesis of undoped and Tb3+-doped Y3Al5O12 powders. A systematic investigation concerning its influence on the structural and morphological properties of amorphous and crystallized samples has been carried out. These properties have been comparatively studied by means of X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, SEM, XAS and SAXS. 27Al NMR and EPR experiments have been performed to complete the study. The combined results have evidenced that acetylacetone promotes organic groups departure during calcination, entailing a better structural organization at lower temperatures compared with unmodified powders. Structuration has been proven to occur at short-scale range until a 600°C heating treatment before being extended by coalescence at higher temperatures. Finally, the presence of acac ligands on the alkoxides leads to a monomer-cluster aggregation process, and thus to a more open network. © 2010 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
