ABSTRACT This thesis is focused on the development of experimental activities used to deepen the knowledge of monolithic detector blocks as an alternative to segmented detectors for Positron Emission Tomography (PET). It includes the development, characterization, setting up, running and evaluation of PET demonstrator prototypes with monolithic detector blocks of Cerium-doped Lutetium Yttrium Orthosilicate (LYSO:Ce) using magnetically compatible sensors such as Avalanche Photodiodes (APDs) and Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs). The prototypes implemented with APDs were constructed to validate the viability of a high-sensitivity PET prototype that had previously been simulated, denominated BrainPET. This work describes and characterizes the integrated front-end electronics used in these prototypes, as well as the electronic readout system developed especially for them. It shows the experimental set-ups to obtain the tomographic PET images and to train neural networks algorithms used for position estimation of photons impinging on the surface of monolithic blocks. Using the BrainPET prototype, satisfactory energy resolution (13 % FWHM), spatial precision of monolithic blocks (~ 2 mm FWHM) and spatial resolution of the PET image (1.5 – 1.7 mm FWHM) in the center of the Field of View (FoV) were obtained. Moreover, we proved the imaging capabilities of this demonstrator with extended sources, considering the acquisition of two simultaneous sources of 1 mm diameter placed at known distances. However, some important limitations were also detected with the BrainPET prototype. In the first place, it was confirmed that there was a lack of flexibility working with an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) whose electronic design was not own but commercial, along with the high cost required to modify an ASIC design with such features. Furthermore, the final characterization of the BrainPET ASIC showed a timing resolution with room for improvement (~ 13 ns FWHM). Taking into consideration the limitations obtained with the BrainPET prototype, along with the technological evolution in magnetically compatible devices, the knowledge acquired with the monolithic blocks were transferred to the new technology available, the SiPMs. Moreover, we opted for a new strategy in the front-end electronics, the FlexToT ASIC, an own design ASIC based on a Time over Threshold (ToT) scheme. One of the most interesting features underlying a ToT architecture is the encoding of the analog input signal amplitude information into the duration of the output signals, delivering directly digital pulses. The electronic architecture helps substitute the Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs) for Time to Digital Converters (TDCs), and they are easily implemented in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), reducing the consumption and the complexity of the design. A new prototype demonstrator based on SiPMs was implemented to validate the FlexToT ASIC for monolithic or segmented blocks. The design and characterization of the necessary front-end electronic to read-out the signals from the ASIC was carried out by evaluating its linearity and dynamic range, its performance with an external noise signal, as well as the differential nonlinearity obtained with the TDCs implemented in the FPGA. Furthermore, the electronic presented in this work is capable of working at high count rates and discriminates different phoswich scintillators. The FlexToT ASIC provides an excellent coincidence time resolution for events that correspond to 511 keV photopeak (128 ps FWHM), resolving the limitations of the poor timing resolution of the BrainPET prototype. Furthermore, the energy resolution with monolithic blocks read by FlexToT ASICs provides an energy resolution of 15.4 % FWHM at 511 keV. Finally, good results were obtained in the quality of the PET image and the resolving power of the FlexToT demonstrator, providing spatial resolutions in the centre of the FoV at about 1.4 mm FWHM.

We describe a scheme for measurement of the mean photon flux at an arbitrary optical sideband frequency using homodyne detection. Experimental implementation of the technique requires an acousto-optic modulator in addition to the homodyne detector, and does not require phase locking. The technique exhibits polarization and frequency and spatial mode selectivity, as well as much improved speed, resolution, and dynamic range when compared to linear photodetectors and avalanche photodiodes, with potential application to quantum-state tomography and information encoding using an optical frequency basis. Experimental data also support a quantum-mechanical description of vacuum noise.

We describe a free space quantum cryptography system which is designed to allow continuous unattended key exchanges for periods of several days, and over ranges of a few kilometres. The system uses a four-laser faint-pulse transmission system running at a pulse rate of 10MHz to generate the required four alternative polarization states. The receiver module similarly automatically selects a measurement basis and performs polarization measurements with four avalanche photodiodes. The controlling software can implement the full key exchange including sifting, error correction, and privacy amplification required to generate a secure key.

Open the sports or business section of your daily newspaper, and you are immediately bombarded with an array of graphs, tables, diagrams, and statistical reports that require interpretation. Across all walks of life, the need to understand statistics is fundamental. Given that our youngsters’ future world will be increasingly data laden, scaffolding their statistical understanding and reasoning is imperative, from the early grades on. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) continues to emphasize the importance of early statistical learning; data analysis and probability was the Council’s professional development “Focus of the Year” for 2007–2008. We need such a focus, especially given the results of the statistics items from the 2003 NAEP. As Shaughnessy (2007) noted, students’ performance was weak on more complex items involving interpretation or application of items of information in graphs and tables. Furthermore, little or no gains were made between the 2000 NAEP and the 2003 NAEP studies. One approach I have taken to promote young children’s statistical reasoning is through data modeling. Having implemented in grades 3 –9 a number of model-eliciting activities involving working with data (e.g., English 2010), I observed how competently children could create their own mathematical ideas and representations—before being instructed how to do so. I thus wished to introduce data-modeling activities to younger children, confi dent that they would likewise generate their own mathematics. I recently implemented data-modeling activities in a cohort of three first-grade classrooms of six year- olds. I report on some of the children’s responses and discuss the components of data modeling the children engaged in.

This paper describes a new analysis of the avalanche breakdown phenomenon in bipolar transistors for different bias conditions of the emitter-base junction. This analysis revolves around the transportation and storage of majority carriers in the base region. Using this analysis one can compute all the voltage-current characteristics of a transistor under avalanche breakdown.

Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) has been deposited onto single-crystal p-type silicon by neutralized ion-beam sputter techniques. The results indicate that the diode behavior is a function of oxygen partial pressure during the reactive sputtering. Film thickness, deposition rate, index of refraction, resistivity, and integrated transmission have been measured under AM1 illumination. It appears that thin films of MoO3 could serve as an n-type transparent semiconductor for photovoltaic applications. Applied Physics Letters is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

Dark currents n(+)/v/p(+) Hg0.69Cd0.Te-31 mid wave infrared photodiodes were measured at room temperature. The diodes exhibited negative differential resistance at room-temperature, but with increasing leakage currents as a function of reverse bias. The current-voltage characteristics were simulated and fitted by incorporating trap assisted tunneling via traps and Shockley-Read-Hall generation recombination process due to dislocations in the carrier transport equations. The thermal suppression of carriers was simulated by taking energy level of trap (E-t), trap density (N-t) and the doping concentrations of n(+) and v regions as fitting parameters. Values of E-t and N-t were 0.78E(g) and similar to 6-9 x 10(14) cm(-3) respectively for most of the diodes. Variable temperature current voltage measurements on variable area diode array (VADA) structures confirmed the fact that variation in zero bias resistance area product (R(0)A) is related to g-r processes originating from variation in concentration and kind of defects that intersect a junction area. Fracture owing to the coalescence of numerous microcracks can be described by a simple statistical model, where a coalescence event stochastically occurs as the number density of nucleated microcracks increases. Both numerical simulation and statistical analysis reveal that a microcrack coalescence process may display avalanche behavior and that the final failure is catastrophic. The cumulative distribution of coalescence events in the vicinity of critical fracture follows a power law and the fracture profile has self-affine fractal characteristic. Some macromechanical quantities may be traced back and extracted from the mesoscopic process based on the statistical analysis of coalescence events.
