Role of Diadegma semiclausum (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) in controlling Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae): Cage exclusion experiments and direct observation

We evaluated the role of the larval parasitoid, Diadegma semiclausum Hellén (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), in controlling Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) by cage exclusion experiments and direct field observation during the winter season in southern Queensland, Australia. The cage exclusion experiment involved uncaged, open cage and closed cage treatments. A higher percentage (54-83%) of P. xylostella larvae on sentinel plants were lost in the uncaged treatment than the closed (4-9%) or open cage treatments (11-29%). Of the larvae that remained in the uncaged treatment, 72-94% were parasitized by D. semiclausum, much higher than that in the open cage treatment (8-37% in first trial, and 38-63% in second trial). Direct observations showed a significant aggregation response of the field D. semiclausum populations to high host density plants in an experimental plot and to high host density plots that were artificially set-up near to the parasitoid source fields. The degree of aggregation varied in response to habitat quality of the parasitoid source field and scales of the manipulated host patches. As a result, density-dependence in the pattern of parasitism may depend on the relative degree of aggregation of the parasitoid population at a particular scale. A high degree of aggregation seems to be necessary to generate density-dependent parasitism by D. semiclausum. Integration of the cage exclusion experiment and direct observation demonstrated the active and dominant role of this parasitoid in controlling P. xylostella in the winter season. A biologically based IPM strategy, which incorporates the use of D. semiclausum with Bt, is suggested for the management of P. xylostella in seasons or regions with a mild temperature.

On the implication of the recently discovered 5 millisecond binary pulsar PSR 1855+09

e argue that the extraordinary fact that all three known millisecond pulsars are very close to the galactic plane implies that there must be ~100 potentially observable millisecond pulsars within ~4 kpc from the Sun. Our other main conclusion is that the dipole magnetic fields or old neutron stars probably saturate around 5 x 108 gauss.

Synthesis dependent characteristics of Sr1-xMnxTiO3 (x=0.03, 0.05, 0.07 and 0.09)

Sr1-xMnxTiO3 (where x=0.03, 0.05, 0.07 and 0.09) was synthesized via different routes that include solid-state, oxalate precipitation and freeze drying. In oxalate precipitation technique, compositions corresponding to 3 and 5 mol% doping of Mn were monophasic whereas the higher compositions revealed the presence of the secondary phases such as MnO, Mn3O4 etc., as confirmed by high resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The decomposition behavior of the precursors prepared using oxalate precipitation method corresponding to the above mentioned compositions was studied. Nanopowders of compositions pertaining to 5 to 9 mol% of Mn doping were obtained using freeze-drying technique. The average crystallite size of these nanopowders was found to be in the 35 to 65 nm range. The microstructural studies carried out on the sintered ceramics, fabricated using powders synthesized by different routes established the fine grained nature ( < 1 mu m) of the one obtained by freeze drying method. Raman scattering studies were carried out in order to complement the observations made from XRD regarding the phase purity. The dielectric properties of the ceramics obtained by different synthesis routes were studied in the 80-300 K temperature range at 100 kHz and the effect of grain size has been discussed. MPK-09, a small molecule inspired from bioactive styryllactone restores the wild-type function of mutant p53

In the search for more efficacious and less toxic cancer drugs, the tumor suppressor p53 protein has long been a desirable therapeutic target. In the recent past, few independent studies have demonstrated that the antitumor activity of wild-type p53 can be restored in cancer cells harboring mutant form of p53 using small molecule activators. In this study, we describe a novel small molecule MPK-09, which is selective and highly potent against allele specific p53 mutations mainly, R175H, R249S, R273H, R273C, and E285K. Except E285K, all other mutations tested are among the six ``hot spot'' p53 mutations reported in majority of human cancer. Furthermore, our study conclusively demonstrates that the apoptotic activity of the small molecule MPK-09 against cancer cells harboring R273C and E285K mutations is due to restoration of the wild-type conformation to the corresponding mutant form of p53.

Streptococcus pneumoniae Genome Database (SPGDB): A database for strain specific comparative analysis of Streptococcus pneumoniae genes and proteins

Streptococcus pneumoniae causes pneumonia, septicemia and meningitis. S. pneumoniae is responsible for significant mortality both in children and in the elderly. In recent years, the whole genome sequencing of various S. pneumoniae strains have increased manifold and there is an urgent need to provide organism specific annotations to the scientific community. This prompted us to develop the Streptococcus pneumoniae Genome Database (SPGDB) to integrate and analyze the completely sequenced and available S. pneumoniae genome sequences. Further, links to several tools are provided to compare the pool of gene and protein sequences, and proteins structure across different strains of S. pneumoniae. SPGDB aids in the analysis of phenotypic variations as well as to perform extensive genomics and evolutionary studies with reference to S. pneumoniae. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
