Analyses of water samples taken by means of an in-hole sampler generally show good agreement with analyses of samples collected by routine shipboard squeezing techniques. At Sites 438 and 439, a decrease in salinity with depth is related to former freshwater flow from an aquifer that crops out at an anticline on a deep sea terrace between Japan and the top of the trench slope of the Japan Trench. This former subaerial recharge suggests significant late Cenozoic subsidence of the terrace, because it now lies at a water depth of 1500 meters. Samples from the trench slope at Site 440 have extremely high values of alkalinity and ammonia, presumably because of a favorable combination of high sedimentation rate and organic carbon content. Diagenetic conditions on the trench slope favor formation of the Fe-Mg carbonate mineral, ankerite; at Site 440 it first occurs at a depth below the sea floor of only 29 meters in late Pleistocene strata. Undissolved diatoms persist to relatively great depth at the sites of Leg 57 because of a low geothermal gradient caused by subduction. Secondary silica lepispheres first appear at 851 meters at the most landward and warmest site, Site 438, in strata 16 million years old with an ambient temperature of 31 °C.

Tetrapyrrole pigments isolated from sediments retrieved during Leg 57 include pheophytin-a, a myriad of chlorins, free-base deoxophylloerythroetioporphyrin (DPEP), as well as copper and nickel porphyrins. Their richness, both qualitatively and quantitatively, in chlorin tetrapyrroles affords a relatively complete study on the early diagenesis of chlorophyll. Our studies, coupled with those in the preceding chapter by Louda et al., point out the influence of pre- and postdepositional environments upon the mode of chlorophyll diagenesis. Formation of tetrapyrroles, collectively called "petroporphyrins," is seen to occur in only a limited set of environmental conditions (see Baker and Palmer, 1978). The more generalized route of chlorophyll diagenesis, at least in the ocean, results in removal of tetrapyrrole pigment, from the fossil record. Late diagenetic products, metalloporphyrins, are found to represent an extremely minor component of the tetrapyrrole assemblage in sediments studied from the Japan Trench. The products of chlorophyll diagenesis isolated from Japan Trench sediments allow expansion of previous diagenetic schemes (Baker and Palmer, 1978; Triebs, 1936) and indicate directions for future studies.

Volatile C1-C7 components in sediments were examined for Japan Trench DSDP Sites 438, 439, 435, 440, 434 and 436, proceeding from west to east. Levels of all components are lowest in the highly fractured sediments of Sites 440 and 434. A number of alkenes, furans, and sulfur compounds were detected in concentrations higher than noted in any other DSDP sediments examined to date. The types, amounts, and specificity of occurrence are similar to those for 1-meter gravity cores we have examined which bear a significant biological imprint. Site 436 shows high levels of saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as olefins, including traces of dimethycyclopentanes and the highest level of cyclohexene detected in any DSDP sediment we have examined to date. The results from Site 436 were unexpected, considering the low organic-carbon content, absence of biogenic methane, and evidence of an aerobic depositional environment at this site.

About 200 volcanic ash layers were recovered during DSDP Leg 57. The volcanic glass in some of these layers was investigated petrographically and chemically in this study. Volcanic glass is mainly rhyolitic and/or rhyodacitic in chemical composition, and its refractive index ranges from 1.496 to 1.529. Some volcanic ash layers consist of multiple grains of different chemical compositions. All the volcanic glass belongs to the tholeiitic and the calc-alkalic volcanic rock series, in SiO2-(Na2O + K2O) diagram and FeO*/MgO-SiO2 diagram. We correlated successfully three volcanic ash layers from the standpoint of chemical composition and biostratigraphy. Hydration of volcanic glass from Leg 57 is less intense than in other DSDP cores.

We detected authigenic clinoptilolites in two core samples of tuffaceous, siliceous mudstone in the lower Miocene section of Hole 439. They occur as prismatic and tabular crystals as long as 0.03 mm in various voids of dissolved glass shards, radiolarian shells, calcareous foraminifers, and calcareous algae. They are high in alkalies, especially Na, and in silica varieties. There is a slight difference in composition among them. The Si : (Al+ Fe3+) ratio is highest (4.65) in radiolarian voids, intermediate (4.34) in dissolved glass voids, and lowest (4.26) in voids of calcareous organisms. This difference corresponds to the association of authigenic silica minerals revealed by the scanning electron microscope: There are abundant opal-CT lepispheres in radiolarian voids, low cristobalite and some lepispheres in dissolved glass voids, and a lack of silica minerals in the voids of calcareous organisms. Although it contains some silica from biogenic opal and alkalies from trapped sea water, clinoptilolite derives principally from dissolved glass. Although they are scattered in core samples of Quaternary through lower Miocene diatomaceous and siliceous deposits, acidic glass fragments react with interstitial water to form clinoptilolite only at a sub-bottom depth of 935 meters at approximately 25°C. Analcimes occur in sand-sized clasts of altered acidic vitric tuff in the uppermost Oligocene sandstones. The analcimic tuff clasts were probably reworked from the Upper Cretaceous terrain adjacent to Site 439. Low cristobalite and opal-CT are found in tuffaceous, siliceous mudstone of the middle and lower Miocene sections at Sites 438 and 439. Low cristobalite derives from acidic volcanic glass and opal-CT from biogenic silica. Both siliceous organic remains and acidic glass fragments occur in sediments from the Quaternary through lower Miocene sections. However, the shallowest occurrence is at 700 meters subbottom in Hole 438A, where temperature is estimated to be 21°C. The d(101) spacing of opal-CT varies from 4.09 to 4.11 Å and that of low cristobalite from 4.04 to 4.06 Å. Some opal-CT lepispheres are precipitated onto clinoptilolites in the voids of radiolarian shells at a sub-bottom depth of 950 meters in Hole 439. Sandstone interlaminated with Upper Cretaceous shale is chlorite- calcite cemented and feldspathic. Sandstones in the uppermost Oligocene section are lithic graywacke and consist of large amounts of lithic clasts grouped into older sedimentary and weakly metamorphosed rocks, younger sedimentary rocks, and acidic volcanic rocks. The acidic volcanic clasts probably originated from the volcanic high, which supplied the basal conglomerate with dacite gravels. The older sedimentary and weakly metamorphosed rocks and green rock correspond to the lithologies of the lower Mesozoic to upper Paleozoic Sorachi Group, including the chert, limestone, and slate in south-central Hokkaido. However, the angular shape and coarseness of the clasts and the abundance of carbonate rock fragments indicate a nearby provenance, which is probably the southern offshore extension of the Sorachi Group. The younger sedimentary rocks, including mudstone, carbonaceous shale, and analcime-bearing tuff, correspond to the lithologies of the Upper Cretaceous strata in south-central Hokkaido. Their clasts were reworked from the southern offshore extension of the strata. Because of the discontinuity of the zeolite zoning due to burial diagenesis, an overburden several kilometers thick must have been denuded before the deposition of sediments in the early Oligocene.

Forty-three core sections from Sites 434, 435, 438, 439, and 440 on the landward side and six core sections from Site 436 on the seaward side of the Japan Trench were obtained through the JOIDES Organic Geochemistry Advisory Panel for study of the origin and state of genesis of the organic matter associated with these continental slope, accretionary wedge, and outer trench slope sediments of the Japan Trench. The lipid fraction of these sediments is derived primarily from terrigenous organic matter and thus is allochthonous to the area. The associated kerogen fraction is of mixed allochthonous and autochthonous origin. The total organic carbon content seaward of the trench is less than that on the landward side. The composition of this organic matter is similar but not identical to that found in the landward side sediments. The organic matter within these sediments is in a diagenetic state in which geopolymerization of biogenic organic matter is nearly complete, but microbial alteration is still occurring.

Heavy-mineral assemblages in the cored sediments from DSDP Legs 56 and 57 show a distinct change of source rocks, from older sedimentary rocks during the Oligocene to volcanic rocks during the Miocene through Pleistocene. The former might have been supplied by the "Oyashio ancient landmass," and the latter from the volcanic areas in Hokkaido and northeast Honshu. This indicates a shift of the Japanese Islands toward the continent.

Altogether 513 samples from sediments of Cretaceous to Pleistocene age from DSDP Legs 56 and 57 were examined by x-ray methods. The main constituents are clay minerals, quartz, feldspar, opaline silica, and volcanic glass. The sediment composition reflects the position of the sites in relation to the main source area, the Japanese Island Arc. For example, relatively coarse-grained material rich in quartz and feldspar was deposited closest to the islands, whereas finer-grained material rich in clay minerals (mainly smectite and illite, with lesser amounts of kaolinite and chlorite) was deposited farther seaward. Vertical fluctuations in the composition of the sediments show the same trend in all sites and are caused mainly by a fluctuating contribution of biogenic silica with time. A trend reversal in the chlorite/kaolinite ratio at Site 438 supports the conclusion that the subsidence of the Oyashio ancient landmass took place during the middle Miocene. That ratio also indicates a northwest drift in the position of Site 436 by sea floor spreading. Oscillations of the illite/smectite ratio during the Pleistocene at Site 436 show the variations of climate during this period. During early diagenesis potassium is fixed in smectite. With increasing depth of burial a smectite-illite mixed layer is formed, with increasing illite layering. At Sites 434, 440, and 441, stepwise changes confirm intensive tectonic process at the midslope terrace and the lower inner slope of the Japan Trench.

As a continuation of the Japan Trench transect commenced by DSDP Leg 56, 10 holes were drilled and 273 cores were recovered while occupying Sites 438, 439, 440, and 441 during Leg 57. At Sites 438 and 439, near the top of the trench inner wall, a principal biostratigraphic objective was to establish a Neogene reference section overlying a pronounced acoustic basement thought to represent continental crust extending outward to this slope environment. At Sites 440 and 441, prime objectives were to distinguish, if present, admixtures of accreted oceanic and non-accreted slope materials, and to recognize repeated or missing sections resulting from the accretionary process. This report summarizes the nannofossil biostratigraphy of the upper lower Miocene to Pleistocene sequences of Leg 57 cores. Insufficient occurrences in the lowermost Miocene, presumed upper Oligocene, and upper Cretaceous sequences at Sites 438 and 439 precluded age determinations for these intervals based on nannoliths. All but a few samples from Site 441 were barren, and in general Leg 57 nannofossil assemblages were too modified by dissolution and diagenesis to permit meaningful paleoclimatologic or paleobiogeographic conclusions to be drawn.
