The work in this sub-project of ESOP focuses on the advective and convective transforma-tion of water masses in the Greenland Sea and its neighbouring areas. It includes observational work on the sub-mesoscale and analysis of hydrographic data up to the gyre-scale. Observations of active convective plumes were made with a towed chain equipped with up to 80 CTD sensors, giving a horizontal and vertical resolution of the hydrographic fields of a few metres. The observed scales of the penetrative convective plumes compare well with those given by theory. On the mesoscale the structure of homogeneous eddies formed as a result of deep convection was observed and the associated mixing and renewal of the intermediate layers quantified. The relative importance and efficiency of thermal and haline penetrative convection in relation to the surface boundary conditions (heat and salt fluxes and ice cover) and the ambient stratification are studied using the multi year time series of hydro-graphic data in the central Greenland Sea. The modification of the water column of the Greenland Sea gyre through advection from and mixing with water at its rim is assessed on longer time scales. The relative contributions are quantified using modern water mass analysis methods based on inverse techniques. Likewise the convective renewal and the spreading of the Arctic Intermediate Water from its formation area is quantified. The aim is to budget the heat and salt content of the water column, in particular of the low salinity surface layer, and to relate its seasonal and interannual variability to the lateral fluxes and the fluxes at the air-sea-ice interface. This will allow to estimate residence times for the different layers of the Greenland Sea gyre, a quantity important for the description of the Polar Ocean carbon cycle.

A new, fast, continuous flow technique is described for the simultaneous determination of 633 S and delta(34)S using SO masses 48, 49 and 50. Analysis time is similar to5min/sample with measurement precision and accuracy better than +/-0.3parts per thousand. This technique, which has been set up using IAEA Ag2S standards S-1, S-2 and S-3, allows for the fast determination of mass-dependent or mass-independent fractionation (MIF) effects in sulfide, organic sulfur samples and possibly sulfate. Small sample sizes can be analysed directly, without chemical pre-treatment. Robustness of the technique for natural versus artificial standards was demonstrated by analysis of a Canon Diablo troilite, which gave a delta(33)S of 0.04parts per thousand and a delta(34)S of -0.06parts per thousand compared to the values obtained for S-1 of 0.07parts per thousand and -0.20parts per thousand, respectively. Two pyrite samples from a banded-iron formation from the 3710 Ma Isua Greenstone Belt were analysed using this technique and yielded MIF (Delta(33)S of 2.45 and 3.31parts per thousand) comparable to pyrite previously analysed by secondary ion probe. The topic of fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) is studied from the perspective of proactive testing. Unlike most research focus in the diagnosis area in which system outputs are analyzed for diagnosis purposes, in this paper the focus is on the other side of the problem: manipulating system inputs for better diagnosis reasoning. In other words, the question of how diagnostic mechanisms can direct system inputs for better diagnosis analysis is addressed here. It is shown how the problem can be formulated as decision making problem coupled with a Bayesian Network based diagnostic mechanism. The developed mechanism is applied to the problem of supervised testing in HVAC systems.

Systemic splits between pre-compulsory and compulsory early years education impact on transitions to school through discontinuities in children’s experience. This paper presents data from a critical participatory action research project about transitions between pre-compulsory and compulsory early education schooling in Australia. The project aim was to investigate how transitions to school might be enhanced by developing deeper professional relationships and shared understandings between teachers from both sectors. Within the communicative space afforded by a professional learning community the participants engaged in critical conversations about their understandings of transitions practices and conditions, including systemic differences. Data analysis provides a snapshot of changes in teachers’ thinking about professional relationships, continuity and factors influencing cross-sectorial professional relationships. Findings suggest that affording opportunities for teachers to re-frame cross sectorial professional relationships has led to transformative changes to transitions practices, understandings and conditions.

Some whole leaf-clearing and staining techniques are described for the microscopic observation of the origin of powdery mildew conidiophores, whether from external mycelium or internal mycelium, emerging through stomata. These techniques enable separation of the two genera, Oidiopsis and Streptopodium, in the Erysiphaceae.
