The principal objective of Leg 187 was to locate the Indian/Pacific mantle boundary by sampling and analyzing 8- to 28-Ma seafloor basalts to the north of the Australian Antarctic Discordance (AAD). In this paper we present Sr and Nd isotopic data from basaltic glasses recovered from the 13 sites drilled during Leg 187. Our data show that the boundary region is characterized by a gradual east-west increase in 87Sr/86Sr, with a corresponding decrease in 143Nd/144Nd across a 150-km-wide zone located east and west of the 127°E Fracture Zone. The Sr-Nd isotopic composition of glasses therefore confirms the general conclusions derived by the Leg 187 shipboard scientific party in that the mantle boundary follows a west-pointing, V-shaped depth anomaly that stretches across the ocean floor from the Australian to the Antarctic continental margins. We document that two systematic trends of covariation between 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd can be distinguished, suggesting that the basalts sampled during Leg 187 formed through the interaction of three contrasting source components: (1) a component that lies within the broad spectrum of Indian-type mantle compositions, (2) a boundary component, and (3) a Pacific-type mantle component. The variations in elemental and isotopic compositions indicate that the boundary component represents a distinct mantle region that is associated with the boundary between the Pacific and the Indian mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) sources rather than a dispersed mantle heterogeneity that was preferentially extracted in the boundary region. However, the origin of the boundary component remains an open question. The three components are not randomly intermixed. The Indian and the Pacific mantle sources both interacted with the boundary component, but they seem not to have interacted directly with each other. Large local variability in isotopic compositions of lavas from the mantle boundary region demonstrates that magma extraction processes were unable to homogenize the isotopic contrasts present in the mantle source in this region. Systematic variations in rare earth element (REE) concentrations across the depth anomaly cannot be explained solely by variations in source composition. The observed variations may be explained by an eastward increase and westward decrease in the degree of melting toward the mantle boundary region, compatible with a cooling of the Pacific mantle and a heating of the Indian mantle toward the mantle boundary.

The chemical compositions of olivine, plagioclase, pyroxene, and spinel in lavas collected during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 187 in the Australian Antarctic Discordance, Southeast Indian Ridge (41°-46°S, 126°-135°E) were analyzed, and modeling of the theoretical equilibrium petrogenetic conditions between olivine and melt was conducted. The cores of larger olivine phenocrysts, particularly in the isotopic Indian-type mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB), are not equilibrated with melt compositions and are considered to be xenocrystic. Larger plagioclase phenocrysts with compositionally reversed zonation are also xenocrystic. The compositions of primary magma were calculated using a "maximum olivine fractionation" model for primitive MORB that should fractionate only olivine. Olivine compositions equilibrated with calculated primary magma and compositions of calculated primary magma suggest that (1) isotopic Pacific-type MORB is more fractionated than Indian-type MORB, (2) Pacific-type MORB was produced by higher degrees of partial melting than Indian-type MORB, and (3) primary magma for Indian-type MORB was segregated from mantle at 10 kbar (~30 km depth), whereas that for Pacific-type MORB was segregated at 15 kbar (~45 km depth).

The microbial population in samples of basalt drilled from the north of the Australian Antarctic Discordance (AAD) during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 187 were studied using deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)-based methods and culturing techniques. The results showed the presence of a microbial population characteristic for the basalt environment. DNA sequence analysis revealed that microbes grouping within the Actinobacteria, green nonsulfur bacteria, the Cytophaga/Flavobacterium/Bacteroides (CFB) group, the Bacillus/Clostridium group, and the beta and gamma subclasses of the Proteobacteria were present in the basalt samples collected. The most dominant phylogenetic group, both in terms of the number of sequences retrieved and the intensities of the DNA bands obtained with the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis, was the gamma Proteobacteria. Enrichment cultures showed phylogenetic affiliation with the Actinobacteria, the CFB group, the Bacillus/Clostridium group, and the alpha, beta, gamma, and epsilon subclasses of the Proteobacteria. Comparison of native and enriched samples showed that few of the microbes found in native basalt samples grew in the enrichment cultures. Only seven clusters, two clusters within each of the CFB and Bacillus/Clostridium groups and five clusters within the gamma Proteobacteria, contained sequences from both native and enriched basalt samples with significant similarity. Results from cultivation experiments showed the presence of the physiological groups of iron reducers and methane producers. The presence of the iron/manganese-reducing bacterium Shewanella was confirmed with DNA analysis. The results indicate that iron reducers and lithotrophic methanogenic Archaea are indigenous to the ocean crust basalt and that the methanogenic Archaea may be important primary producers in this basaltic environment.

Shipboard studies during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 187 (Australian Antarctic Discordance, AAD) suggested that there was no discernible coincidence between the interpreted age of rocks recovered and the intensity of alteration observed. Samples from the oldest sites occupied appeared to exhibit the least overall effects of alteration, and the intensity of alteration varied from site to site. Previous investigations of low-temperature alteration in oceanic basement samples have been restricted by the myopic perspective provided by single drill holes or dredge collections. Combining core samples from Leg 187 and dredge samples from the AAD collection at Oregon State University (USA) offers the unique opportunity to investigate mineral and bulk chemical changes attending alteration of basalt over a range of ages from 0 to 28 Ma. Results of this research indicate that there is a general increase in the intensity of alteration as the basalts age and mosve off axis, but that this relationship is somewhat veiled by the dominating control on alteration intensity dictated by variations in permeability.

Kangen Band, as an example of reclaiming of the derisive term kampungan. In it, I argue that this reclaiming represents an interesting case of genre manipulation, and consider what this can reveal about how Indonesian pop genres are constituted, what they ‘are’ and what they ‘do’. In so doing, I seek to rework existing scholarship relating to Indonesian pop genres and modernity, as well as interrogate some broader theories of genre. In this essay, I extend the argument that Indonesian pop genres are not purely technical categories, they touch on myths of class and nation (Wallach 2008; Weintraub 2010; Yampolsky 1989. As we shall see, in the New Order period, pop music genres reached out to these myths by positioning themselves variously vis-à-vis the capital city, Jakarta. Such positioning, achieved through use of the terms gedongan (a term that strives to infer refinement by stressing the non-masses’ central position in the urban environment) and kampungan (a term that strives to enforce subalterns’ marginal position in relation to the metropolis, see also the previous contribution by Weintraub), continues to haunt the constitution of genre in the post-New Order period, but in novel ways. These novel ways, I argue, may be seen to result from industrial transformation and new systems of knowledge production.

The vertical zoning of the planktonic Crustacea in a lake is the expression of a complex set of different factors. Besides the measurable, external influences such as light, temperature, acid and C02 stratification, a particularly large part is played by internal factors, which co-ordinate a specific reaction in each species depending on state of development, age and sex. Supporting this extensive, predictable, annual course of diurnal depths and the daily vertical migrations, whose extent is again dependent on external conditions, primarily of course on the amount of light. The individual factors mentioned, however, are here also of great significance. Within the scope of a long-term study of the planktonic Copepoda of Lake Constance, some day and night series were in 1963 also carried out in the Obersee, in order to obtain at least volumetric data on the extent of the daily migrations of these creatures.
