(Table 1) Porewater analysis with respect to gypsum from different ODP holes

The stability of gypsum in marine sediments has been investigated through the calculation of its saturation index at the sediment in situ temperature and pressure, using the entire ODP/IODP porewater composition database (14416 samples recovered from sediments collected during 95 ODP and IODP Legs). Saturation is reached in sediment porewaters of 26 boreholes drilled at 23 different sites, during 12 ODP/IODP Legs. As ocean bottom seawater is largely undersaturated with respect to gypsum, the porewater Ca content or its SO4 concentration, or both, must increase in order to reach equilibrium. At several sites equilibrium is reached either through the presence of evaporitic gypsum layers found in the sedimentary sequence, and/or through a salinity increase due to the presence of evaporitic brines with high concentrations of Ca and SO4. Saturation can also be reached in porewaters of seawater-like salinity (~ 35 per mil), provided sulfate reduction is limited. In this case, saturation is due to the alteration of volcanogenic material which releases large amounts of Ca to the porewaters, where the Ca concentration can reach 55 times its seawater value as for example at ODP Leg 134 site 833. At a few sites, saturation is reached in hydrothermal environments, or as a consequence of the alteration of the basaltic basement. In addition to the well known influence of brines on the formation of gypsum, these results indicate that the alteration of sediments rich in volcanogenic material is a major process leading to gypsum saturation in marine sediment porewaters. Therefore, the presence of gypsum in ancient and recent marine sediments should not be systematically interpreted as due to hypersaline waters, especially if volcanogenic material is present.

MCF7/LCC2: A 4-hydroxytamoxifen resistant human breast cancer variant that retains sensitivity to the steroidal antiestrogen ICI 182,780

The development of resistance to the antiestrogen tamoxifen occurs in a high percentage of initially responsive patients. We have developed a new model in which to investigate acquired resistance to triphenylethylenes. A stepwise in vitro selection of the hormone-independent human breast cancer variant MCF-7/LCC1 against 4-hydroxytamoxifen produced a stable resistant population designated MCF7/LCC2. MCF7/LCC2 cells retain levels of estrogen receptor expression comparable to the parental MCF7/LCC1 and MCF-7 cells. Progesterone receptor expression remains estrogen inducible in MCF7/LCC2 cells, although to levels significantly lower than observed in MCF-7 and MCF7/LCC1 cells. MCF7/ LCC2 cells form tumors in ovariectomized nude mice without estrogen supplementation, and these tumors are tamoxifen resistant but can be tstrogen stimulated. Significantly, MCF7/LCC2 cells have retained sensitivity to the steroidal antiestrogen ICI 182,780. These data suggest that some breast cancer patients who acquire resistance to tamoxifen may not develop cross-resistance to treatment with steroidal antiestrogens.

O atual projeto de Constituição propõe um sistema misto de governo, com a existência do presidente, como chefe de Estado, e do primeiro-ministro, chefe da administração federal. A proposta não agrada os presidencialistas. Deputado Wagner Lago (PMDB-MA) diz que o parlamentarismo pressupõe partidos políticos fortes e uma burocracia estatal eficiente, o que não é caso do Brasil. O Deputado Paes Andrade (PMDB-CE), representante dos parlamentaristas, afirma que o grupo quer o fortalecimento do Poder Legislativo, recolocando-o no centro das decisões nacionais. Na sessão O Povo Pergunta, cidadã quer saber se a nova Constituição está voltada para os pequenos interesses ou para o interesse da maioria. O Deputado Waldir Pugliese (PMDB-PR) responde que tem esperança de que a nova Constituição seja feita em favor da grande maioria do povo brasileiro. Crianças entregam emenda popular ao Presidente da Assembleia Nacional Constituinte, Deputado Ulysses Guimarães (PMDB-SP), pedindo proteção ao menor em situação de risco e o direito ao ensino gratuito a partir dos sete anos de idade. O Deputado Robson Marinho (PMDB-SP) declara que a nova Constituição deve começar pelas crianças. Deficientes físicos entregam emenda popular buscando um tratamento de igualdade e respeito pelos seus direitos. Sessão Extraordinária da Assembleia Nacional Constituinte (ANC) teve como tema a educação. O Deputado Sólon Borges dos Reis (PTB-SP) afirma que as escolas privadas devem ser autofinanciadas. O Deputado Eraldo Tinoco (PFL-BA) considera que algumas instituições sem fins lucrativos devem receber financiamento público.

O Relator da Assembleia Nacional Constituinte (ANC) Bernardo Cabral (PMDB-AM) irá examinar todas as emendas e redigir novo relatório. A Deputada Lúcia Braga (PFL-PB) acredita que a sociedade deve continuar mobilizada, sendo necessário que ela acompanhe o trabalho sério que está sendo feito. O Deputado Érico Pegoraro (PFL-RS) almeja um texto constitucional que não abrigue apenas a burguesia, mas principalmente quarenta milhões de brasileiros que não têm um salário mínimo para sobreviver. O Deputado Cunha Bueno (PDS-SP) é a favor do parlamentarismo monárquico, pois os países onde ele existe são estáveis e democráticos. O Deputado Mário Lima (PMDB-BA) relata sobre a emenda popular que trata do monopólio estatal do petróleo, mantendo-o integral e sem os contratos de risco. O Deputado Mário Covas (PMDB-SP) entregou a emenda que pede eleições diretas para presidente da república em 1988 ao Presidente da Assembleia Nacional Constituinte (ANC), Ulysses Guimarães. Em seu discurso o Deputado Mário Covas elogiou o Deputado Ulysses Guimarães, o "Senhor das Diretas". O Deputado Ulysses Guimarães faz um balanço final das emendas populares.

Raimundo Bezerra (PMDB-CE) acredita ser necessário priorizar a medicina preventiva. José Guedes (PMDB-RO) está preocupado com as leis complementares. Emenda do Presidente do Senado Humberto Lucena cria a figura do Ouvidor-Geral, um "ombudsman" brasileiro. Ele considera que seria uma figura fundamental para agir em nome da sociedade e ser o grande fiscalizador político-administrativo dos três poderes do Estado. O Presidente da Assembleia Nacional Constituinte, Deputado Ulysses Guimarães (PMDB-SP), discute com os relatores e com os líderes do PMDB os pontos polêmicos do projeto de Constituição.O Relator Bernardo Cabral (PMDB-AM) entregou ao Presidente da ANC, Dep. As is known, copepods play an important role in the nutrition of fish. Therefore with a view to facilitating research on the study of the quantitative side of feeding, there have recently appeared a considerable number of papers devoted to the development of methods for determining the wet. weight of these crustaceans. For the further facilitating of research in the nutrition of fish it would be of great interest to clarify the problem, is there not some kind of rule in the growth of the crustaceans during metamorphosis, and if there is such a rule is it not possible, to determine the length of the larvae at each stage, not by measuring them, but by using the formulae derived on the basis of these rules. This article examines the growth curves of different species of freshwater Copepoda, obtained on the basis of experimental observations in cultures or by way of measurement of mass material at all stages of development in samples from water-bodies. The authors study in particular the ratio of the mean diameter of the eggs to the mean length of the egg-bearing females.

Nuclear hyperfine interactions in W^(182), W^(183), and Pt^(195) as studies by the Mossbauer effect

The Mössbauer technique has been used to study the nuclear hyperfine interactions and lifetimes in W¹⁸² (2⁺ state) and W¹⁸³ (3/2^- and 5/2^- states) with the following results: g(5/2^-)/g(2⁺) = 1.40 ± 0.04; g(3/2^- = -0.07 ± 0.07; Q(5/2^-)/Q(2⁺) = 0.94 ± 0.04; T_1/2(3/2^-) = 0.184 ± 0.005 nsec; T_1/2(5/2^-) >̰ 0.7 nsec. These quantities are discussed in terms of a rotation-particle interaction in W¹⁸³ due to Coriolis coupling. From the measured quantities and additional information on γ-ray transition intensities magnetic single-particle matrix elements are derived. It is inferred from these that the two effective g-factors, resulting from the Nilsson-model calculation of the single-particle matrix elements for the spin operators ŝ_z and ŝ₊, are not equal, consistent with a proposal of Bochnacki and Ogaza.

The internal magnetic fields at the tungsten nucleus were determined for substitutional solid solutions of tungsten in iron, cobalt, and nickel. With g(2⁺) = 0.24 the results are: |H_eff(W-Fe)| = 715 ± 10 kG; |H_eff(W-Co)| = 360 ± 10 kG; |H_eff(W-Ni)| = 90 ± 25 kG. The electric field gradients at the tungsten nucleus were determined for WS₂ and WO₃. With Q(2⁺) = -1.81b the results are: for WS₂, eq = -(1.86 ± 0.05) 10¹⁸ V/cm²; for WO₃, eq = (1.54 ± 0.04) 10¹⁸ V/cm² and ƞ = 0.63 ± 0.02.

The 5/2^- state of Pt¹⁹⁵ has also been studied with the Mössbauer technique, and the g-factor of this state has been determined to be -0.41 ± 0.03. The following magnetic fields at the Pt nucleus were found: in an Fe lattice, 1.19 ± 0.04 MG; in a Co lattice, 0.86 ± 0.03 MG; and in a Ni lattice, 0.36 ± 0.04 MG. Isomeric shifts have been detected in a number of compounds and alloys and have been interpreted to imply that the mean square radius of the Pt¹⁹⁵ nucleus in the first-excited state is smaller than in the ground state.
