Raman spectroscopy has been used to study a selection of vivianites from different origins. A band is identified at around 3480 cm-1 whose intensity is sample dependent. The band is attributed to the stretching vibration of Fe3+ OH units which are formed through the autooxidation of the vivianite minerals either by self-oxidation or by photocatalytic oxidation according to the reaction: (Fe2+)3(PO4)2·8H2O + 1/2O2 (Fe2+)3– x(Fe3+)x(PO4)2(OH)x·(8–x)H2O in which some of the water of crystallization is converted to hydroxyl anions. Complexity of the OH stretching region through the overlap of broad bands is reflected in the water HOH deformation modes at 1660 cm–1. Using the infrared bands at 3281, 3105 and 3025 cm–1, hydrogen bond distances of 2.734(5), 2.675(2) and 2.655(2) Å are calculated. Vivianites are characterised by an intense band at 950 cm–1 assigned to the PO4 symmetric stretching vibration. Low Raman intensity bands are observed at ~1077, ~1050, 1015 and ~ 985 cm–1 assigned to the phosphate PO4 antisymmetric stretching vibrations. Multiple antisymmetric stretching vibrations are due to the reduced tetrahedral symmetry. This loss of degeneracy is also reflected in the bending modes. Two bands are observed at ~ 423 and ~ 456 cm–1 assigned to the2bending modes. For the vivianites four bands are observed at ~ 584, ~ 571, ~ 545 and ~ 525 cm–1 assigned to the 4modes of vivianite.

A series of molybdate bearing minerals including wulfenite, powellite, lindgrenite and iriginite have been analysed by Raman microscopy. These minerals are closely related and often have related paragenesis. Raman microscopy enables the selection of individual crystals of these minerals for spectroscopic analysis even though several of the minerals can be found in the same matrix because of the paragenetic relationships between the minerals. The molybdenum bearing minerals lindgrenite, iriginite and koechlinite were studied by scanning electron microscopy and compositionally analysed by EDX methods using an electron probe before Raman spectroscopic analyses. The Raman spectra are assigned according to factor group analysis and related to the structure of the minerals. These minerals have characteristically different Raman spectra.

The application of Raman spectroscopy to the study of the copper chloride minerals nantokite, eriochalcite and claringbullite has enabled the vibrational modes for the CuCl, CuOH and CuOH2 to be determined. Nantokite is characterised by bands at 205 and 155 cm-1 attributed to the transverse and longitudinal optic vibrations. Nantokite also has an intense band at 463 cm-1, eriochalcite at 405 and 390 cm-1 and claringbullite at 511 cm-1. These bands are attributed to CuO stretching modes. Water librational bands at around 672 cm-1 for eriochalcite have been identified and hydroxyl deformation modes of claringbullite at 970, 906 and 815 cm-1 are observed. Spectra of the three minerals are so characteristically different that the minerals are readily identified by Raman spectroscopy. The minerals are often determined in copper corrosion products by X-ray diffraction. Raman spectroscopy offers a rapid, in-situ technique for the identification of these corrosion products.

Aim: To measure the influence of spherical intraocular lens implantation and conventional myopic laser in situ keratomileusis on peripheral ocular aberrations. Setting: Visual & Ophthalmic Optics Laboratory, School of Optometry & Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. Methods: Peripheral aberrations were measured using a modified commercial Hartmann-Shack aberrometer across 42° x 32° of the central visual field in 6 subjects after spherical intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and in 6 subjects after conventional laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for myopia. The results were compared with those of age matched emmetropic and myopic control groups. Results: The IOL group showed a greater rate of quadratic change of spherical equivalent refraction across the visual field, higher spherical aberration, and greater rates of change of higher-order root-mean-square aberrations and total root-mean-square aberrations across the visual field than its emmetropic control group. However, coma trends were similar for the two groups. The LASIK group had a greater rate of quadratic change of spherical equivalent refraction across the visual field, higher spherical aberration, the opposite trend in coma across the field, and greater higher-order root-mean-square aberrations and total root-mean-square aberrations than its myopic control group. Conclusion: Spherical IOL implantation and conventional myopia LASIK increase ocular peripheral aberrations. They cause considerable increase in spherical aberration across the visual field. LASIK reverses the sign of the rate of change in coma across the field relative to that of the other groups. Keywords: refractive surgery, LASIK, IOL implantation, aberrations, peripheral aberrations

Mining is the process of extracting mineral resources from the Earth for commercial value. It is an ancient human activity which can be traced back to Palaeolithic times (43 000 years ago), where for example the mineral hematite was mined to produce the red pigment ochre. The importance of many mined minerals is reflected in the names of the major milestones in human civilizations: the stone, copper, bronze, and iron ages. Much later coal provided the energy that was critical to the industrial revolution and still underpins modern society, creating 38% of world energy generation today. Ancient mines used human and later animal labor and broke rock using stone tools, heat, and water, and later iron tools. Today’s mines are heavily mechanized with large diesel and electrically powered vehicles, and rock is broken with explosives or rock cutting machines.

Despite many incidents about fake online consumer reviews have been reported, very few studies have been conducted to date to examine the trustworthiness of online consumer reviews. One of the reasons is the lack of an effective computational method to separate the untruthful reviews (i.e., spam) from the legitimate ones (i.e., ham) given the fact that prominent spam features are often missing in online reviews. The main contribution of our research work is the development of a novel review spam detection method which is underpinned by an unsupervised inferential language modeling framework. Another contribution of this work is the development of a high-order concept association mining method which provides the essential term association knowledge to bootstrap the performance for untruthful review detection. Our experimental results confirm that the proposed inferential language model equipped with high-order concept association knowledge is effective in untruthful review detection when compared with other baseline methods.

Planchéite Cu8Si8O22(OH)4•H2O is a hydrated copper hydroxy silicate. The objective of this work is to use Raman and infrared spectroscopy to determine the molecular structure of planchéite. Raman bands of planchéite at around 1048, 1081 and 1127 are described as the ν1 –SiO3 symmetric stretching vibrations; Raman bands at 828, 906 are attributed to the ν3 –SiO3 antisymmetric stretching vibrations. The Raman band at 699 cm-1 is assigned to the ν4 bending modes of the -SiO3 units. The intense Raman band at 3479 cm-1 is ascribed to the stretching vibration of the OH units. The Raman band at 3250 cm-1 is evidence for water in the structure. A comparison of the spectra of planchéite with that of shattuckite and chrysocolla.

Generalized fractional partial differential equations have now found wide application for describing important physical phenomena, such as subdiffusive and superdiffusive processes. However, studies of generalized multi-term time and space fractional partial differential equations are still under development. In this paper, the multi-term time-space Caputo-Riesz fractional advection diffusion equations (MT-TSCR-FADE) with Dirichlet nonhomogeneous boundary conditions are considered. The multi-term time-fractional derivatives are defined in the Caputo sense, whose orders belong to the intervals [0, 1], [1, 2] and [0, 2], respectively. These are called respectively the multi-term time-fractional diffusion terms, the multi-term time-fractional wave terms and the multi-term time-fractional mixed diffusion-wave terms. The space fractional derivatives are defined as Riesz fractional derivatives. Analytical solutions of three types of the MT-TSCR-FADE are derived with Dirichlet boundary conditions. By using Luchko's Theorem (Acta Math. Vietnam., 1999), we proposed some new techniques, such as a spectral representation of the fractional Laplacian operator and the equivalent relationship between fractional Laplacian operator and Riesz fractional derivative, that enabled the derivation of the analytical solutions for the multi-term time-space Caputo-Riesz fractional advection-diffusion equations. © 2012.

We assessed whether alternative transcripts (using KLK2, KLK3 and KLK4 as models) are differentially regulated by androgens and anti-androgens as an indicator of prostate cancers as they acquire treatment resistance. Using RNAseq of LNCaP cells treated with dihydrotestosterone, bicalutamide and enzalutamide, we show that the expression of variant KLK transcripts is markedly different to other variant transcripts at those loci. We also reveal that KLK variants are also over 2-fold more highly expressed in prostate cancers compared to their corresponding normal prostate. We propose that androgens and anti-androgens can activate specific variant transcripts of critical prostate cancer genes during treatment resistance

Priceite is a calcium borate mineral and occurs as white crystals in the monoclinic pyramidal crystal system. We have used a combination of Raman spectroscopy with complimentary infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) to study the mineral priceite. Chemical analysis shows a pure phase consisting of B and Ca only. Raman bands at 956, 974, 991, and 1019 cm−1 are assigned to the BO stretching vibration of the B10O19 units. Raman bands at 1071, 1100, 1127, 1169, and 1211 cm−1 are attributed to the BOH in-plane bending modes. The intense infrared band at 805 cm−1 is assigned to the trigonal borate stretching modes. The Raman band at 674 cm−1 together with bands at 689, 697, 736, and 602 cm−1 are assigned to the trigonal and tetrahedral borate bending modes. Raman spectroscopy in the hydroxyl stretching region shows a series of bands with intense Raman band at 3555 cm−1 with a distinct shoulder at 3568 cm−1. Other bands in this spectral region are found at 3221, 3385, 3404, 3496, and 3510 cm−1. All of these bands are assigned to water stretching vibrations. The observation of multiple bands supports the concept of water being in different molecular environments in the structure of priceite. The molecular structure of a natural priceite has been assessed using vibrational spectroscopy.

The mineral tunisite has been studied by using a combination of scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence and vibrational spectroscopy. Chemical analysis shows the presence of Na, Ca, Al and Cl. SEM shows a pure single phase. An intense Raman band at 1127 cm−1 is assigned to the carbonate ν1 symmetric stretching vibration and the Raman band at 1522 cm−1 is assigned to the ν3 carbonate antisymmetric stretching vibration. Infrared bands are observed in similar positions. Multiple carbonate bending modes are found. Raman bands attributable to AlO stretching and bending vibrations are observed. Two Raman bands at 3419 and 3482 cm−1 are assigned to the OH stretching vibrations of the OH units. Vibrational spectroscopy enables aspects of the molecular structure of the carbonate mineral tunisite to be assessed.

The mineral series triplite-zwieselite with theoretical formula (Mn2+)2(PO4)(F)-(Fe2+)2(PO4)(F) from the El Criolo granitic pegmatite, located in the Eastern Pampean Ranges of Córdoba Province, was studied using electron microprobe, thermogravimetry, and Raman and infrared spectroscopy. The analysis of the mineral provided a formula of (Fe1.00, Mn0.85, Ca0.08, Mg0.06)∑2.00(PO4)1.00(F0.80, OH0.20)∑1.00. An intense Raman band at 981 cm−1 with a shoulder at 977 cm−1 is assigned to the ν1 symmetric stretching mode. The observation of two bands for the phosphate symmetric stretching mode offers support for the concept that the phosphate units in the structure of triplite-zwieselite are not equivalent. Low-intensity Raman bands at 1012, 1036, 1071, 1087, and 1127 cm−1 are assigned to the ν3 antisymmetric stretching modes. A set of Raman bands at 572, 604, 639, and 684 cm−1 are attributed to the ν4 out-of-plane bending modes. A single intense Raman band is found at 3508 cm−1 and is assigned to the stretching vibration of hydroxyl units. Infrared bands are observed at 3018, 3125, and 3358 cm−1 and are attributed to water stretching vibrations. Supplemental materials are available for this article. This paper reveals the effects of layer orientation on structural behaviour of three layers configured (LHL, HHL, LLH) CFRP strengthened circular hollow section (CHS) members subjected to bending. The beams were loaded to failure under four-point bending. The structural behaviour of the CFRP strengthened tubular steel beams with various layer orientations were presented in terms of failure load, stiffness, composite beam action and modes of failure. The LHL and LLH layers oriented strengthened beams perform slightly better than HHL layers oriented strengthened beams. The LHL and LLH layers oriented treated beams showed very similar structural behaviour.

C13H14N2OS, M r = 246, is monoclinic, P21/c, with a = 7.214(1), b = 8.935(5), c = 20.243 (6) A, fl =99.42 (2) °, V = 1304.83 ,~3, Z = 4, D m = 1.23, D x =1.25 Mg m -3, p(Mo Ka, 2 = 0.7107 A) = 0.232 mm -~,F(000) = 520. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined to an R value of 0.042 using 1127 intensity measurements. The C=C and C-N bond distances differ considerably from their normal values. An appreciable rotation [38.3(4) °] about the C=C bond is observed, the bond length being 1.414(5)A.This is due to the combination of push-pull and steric effects.
