It has been suggested that materials with interesting and useful bulk non-linear optical properties might result by substituting vanadium, the lightest element in the group V of periodic table, for Nb or Ta atoms along with Li and three oxygens. It is with this motivation that we have been making attempts to grow single crystals of LiNbO3 doped with various concentrations of V2O5. Unfortunately the results obtained on the ceramic samples of this material have not been very encouraging, owing to their hygroscopic nature. However, our attempts to prepare both ceramic and single-crystalline samples of potassium lithium niobate (K3Li2Nb5O15; KLN) doped V2O5 were successful. In this letter we report the preliminary results concerning our studies on the effect of V2O5 doping on the structural as well as topographic features of both ceramic and single-crystalline samples of KLN.

Owing to the complexity of the wear process, high stress grinding abrasion is quite different from two-body abrasive wear. Reported data on two-body abrasive wear reveal that the wear decreases with an increase in steel hardness. This relationship can be established without having to consider the microstructure of the steel grinding medium. However, it is known that hardness cannot be directly employed to predict the wear of steel balls under three-body grinding abrasion, as occurs during dry grinding of ores in ball mills. The present work suggests that the wear behaviour of grinding balls can be classified according to the microstructural family to which they belong. Thus, in this work on AISI 52100 steel, the separate groups of microstructures were spheroidite—pearlite, bainite, tempered martensite and martensite with retained austenite. It appears that wear behaviour of the first three groups follows the same trend as that observed for two-body wear. The data suggest that an optimum level of retained austenite could improve the wear resistance of microstructures containing martensite.

Zinc Oxide doped only with Cu shows highly nonlinear I–V characteristics. Microstructural observations of these ceramics reveal the presence of extensive dislocation network. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicates that the dislocations are impurity decorated which arise as a result of limited solubility of CuO in ZnO. It is envisaged that the depletion region is generated in the region containing the dislocations because of the presence of acceptor type traps.

Oxygen is shown to adsorb molecularly on a clean Cu(110) surface at 80 K and dissociate around 150 K forming atomic oxygen. Adsorption of oxygen on an HCl covered surface at low temperatures results in the formation of adsorbed hydroxyl groups and water in addition to adsorbed molecular oxygen. The molecular oxygen species is stable up to 190 K on the HCl covered surface.

The propagation constant of a superconducting microstrip transmission delay line is evaluated using the spectral domain immitance approach, modelling the superconductor as a surface current having an equivalent surface impedance found through the complex resistive boundary condition. The sensitivity approach is used to study the beta variations with substrate parameters and film characteristics. Results show that the surface impedance does not have much influence on beta sensitivities with respect to epsilon r, W and h. However, it can be observed that the surface impedance plays a crucial role in determining the optimum design.

The effect of zirconium on the hot working characteristics of alpha and alpha-beta brass was studied in the temperature range of 500 to 850-degrees-C and the strain rate range of 0.001 to 100 s-1. On the basis of the flow stress data, processing maps showing the variation of the efficiency of power dissipation (given by [2m/(m+1)] where m is the strain rate sensitivity) with temperature and strain rate were obtained. The addition of zirconium to alpha brass decreased the maximum efficiency of power dissipation from 53 to 39%, increased the strain rate for dynamic recrystallization (DRX) from 0.001 to 0.1 s-1 and improved the hot workability. Alpha-beta brasses with and without zirconium exhibit a domain in the temperature range from 550 to 750-degrees-C and at strain rates lower than 1 s-1 with a maximum efficiency of power dissipation of nearly 50 % occurring in the temperature range of 700 to 750-degrees-C and a strain rate of 0.001 s-1. In the domain, the alpha phase undergoes DRX and controls the hot deformation of the alloy whereas the beta phase deforms superplastically. The addition of zirconium to alpha-beta brass has not affected the processing maps as it gets partitioned to the beta phase and does not alter the constitutive behavior of the alpha phase

Processing maps for hot working of stainless steel of type AISI 304L have been developed on the basis of the flow stress data generated by compression and torsion in the temperature range 600–1200 °C and strain rate range 0.1–100 s−1. The efficiency of power dissipation given by 2m/(m+1) where m is the strain rate sensitivity is plotted as a function of temperature and strain rate to obtain a processing map, which is interpreted on the basis of the Dynamic Materials Model. The maps obtained by compression as well as torsion exhibited a domain of dynamic recrystallization with its peak efficiency occurring at 1200 °C and 0.1 s−1. These are the optimum hot-working parameters which may be obtained by either of the test techniques. The peak efficiency for the dynamic recrystallization is apparently higher (64%) than that obtained in constant-true-strain-rate compression (41%) and the difference in explained on the basis of strain rate variations occurring across the section of solid torsion bar. A region of flow instability has occurred at lower temperatures (below 1000 °C) and higher strain rates (above 1 s−1) and is wider in torsion than in compression. To achieve complete microstructure control in a component, the state of stress will have to be considered.

Earlier we have demonstrated the presence of internal ribosome entry site (IRES) within tumor suppressor p53 mRNA. Here we have mapped the putative secondary structure of p53-IRES RNA using information from chemical probing and nuclease mapping experiments. Additionally, the secondary structure of the IRES element of the wild-type RNA was compared with cancer-derived silent mutant p53 RNAs. These mutations might result in the conformational alterations of p53-IRES RNAs. The results also indicate decreased IRES activities of the mutants as compared to wild-type RNA. Further, it was observed that some of the cytoplasmic trans-acting factors, critical for enhancing IRES function, were unable to bind mutant RNAs as efficiently as to wild-type. Our results suggest that hnRNP C1/C2 binds to p53-IRES and siRNA mediated partial silencing of hnRNP C1/C2 showed appreciable decrease in IRES function and consequent decrease in the level of the corresponding p53 isoform. Interestingly mutant p53 IRES showed lesser binding with hnRNP C1/C2 protein. Finally, upon doxorubicin treatment, the mutant RNAs were unable to show enhanced p53 synthesis to similar extent compared to wild type. Taken together, these observations suggest that mutations occurring in the p53 IRES might have profound implications for de-regulation of its expression and activity.

Bulk Ge(17)Te83_,JI glasses (05x.5_13), have been found to exhibit memory type electrical switching. The switching voltages (also known as threshold voltage V-th) of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses are found to decrease with increasing thallium content. The rate of decrease of Vtry is greater at lower concentrations and \textbackslashid, falls at a slower rate for higher thallium concentrations (x 6). The addition of thallium to the Ge-Te network fragments the covalent network and introduces ionic nature to it; the reduction in network connectivity leads to the decrease in switching voltages with thallium content. The decrease in the glass transition temperatures of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses with increasing thallium concentration supports the idea of decrease in network connectivity with TI addition. The more metallic nature of TI also contributes to the observed reduction in the switching voltages of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses with TI content. Further, there is an interesting correlation seen between the threshold voltage V-th and the average bond energy, as a function of TI content. In addition, the switching voltages of Ge17Te83-xTlx glasses have been found to decrease with sample thickness almost linearly. The set-reset studies indicate that the Ge17Te83-xTl2 sample can be switched for more than 10 cycles, whereas other glasses could not be reset beyond two switching cycles. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. We investigate the structural, magnetic, and specific heat behavior of the hexagonal manganite Dy0.5Y0.5MnO3 in order to understand the effect of dilution of Dy magnetism with nonmagnetic yttrium. In this compound, the triangular Mn lattice orders antiferromagnetic at T-N(Mn) approximate to 68 K observed experimentally in the derivative of magnetic susceptibility as well as in specific heat. In addition, a low-temperature peak at T-N(Dy) similar to 3 K is observed in specific heat which is attributed to rare earth order. The T-N(Mn) increases by 9 K compared to that of hexagonal (h) DyMnO3 while T-N(Dy) is unchanged. A change in slope of thermal evolution of lattice parameters is observed to occur at temperature close to T-N(Mn). This hints at strong magnetoelastic coupling in this geometric multiferroic. In magnetization measurements, steplike features are observed when the magnetic field is applied along the c axis which shift to higher fields with temperature and vanish completely above 40 K. The presence of different magnetic phases at low temperature and strong magnetoelastic effects can lead to such field-induced transitions which resemble metamagnetic transitions. This indicates the possibility of strong field-induced effects in dielectric properties of this material, which is unexplored to date.

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans MAL4-1, an isolate from Malanjkhand copper mines, India, was adapted to grow in the presence of high concentration (30 gL(-1)) of Cu2+, resulting in a 15-fold increase in its tolerance to Cu2+. While wild-type T. ferrooxidans MAL4-1 contained multiple plasmids, cultures adapted to Cu2+ concentrations of 20 gL(-1) or more showed a drastic reduction in the copy number of the plasmids. The reduction for three of the plasmids was estimated to be over 50-fold. Examination of the plasmid profiles of the strains adapted to high concentration of SO42- anion (as Na2SO4 or ZnSO4) indicated that the reduction in plasmid copy number is not owing to SO42- anion, but is specific for Cu2+. The effect of mercury on the plasmids was similar to that of copper. Deadaptation of the Cu2+- Or Hg2+-adapted T. ferrooxidans resulted in restoration of the plasmids to the original level within the first passage. The fact that the plasmid copy number, in general, is drastically reduced in Cu2+-adapted T. ferrooxidans suggests that resistance to copper is chromosome mediated. This is the first report of a selective negative influence of copper ions on the copy number of plasmids in T. ferrooxidans.
