Conventional differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques are commonly used to quantify the solubility of drugs within polymeric-controlled delivery systems. However, the nature of the DSC experiment, and in particular the relatively slow heating rates employed, limit its use to the measurement of drug solubility at the drug's melting temperature. Here, we describe the application of hyper-DSC (HDSC), a variant of DSC involving extremely rapid heating rates, to the calculation of the solubility of a model drug, metronidazole, in silicone elastomer, and demonstrate that the faster heating rates permit the solubility to be calculated under non-equilibrium conditions such that the solubility better approximates that at the temperature of use. At a heating rate of 400 degrees C/min (HDSC), metronidazole solubility was calculated to be 2.16 mg/g compared with 6.16 mg/g at 20 degrees C/min. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present high-speed, three-colour photometry of the faint eclipsing cataclysmic variable OU Vir. For the first time in OU Vir, separate eclipses of the white dwarf and the bright spot have been observed. We use timings of these eclipses to derive a purely photometric model of the system, obtaining a mass ratio of q=0.175+/-0.025, an inclination of i=79.degrees2+/-0.degrees7 and a disc radius of R-d/a=0.2315+/-0.0150. We separate the white dwarf eclipse from the light curve and, by fitting a blackbody spectrum to its flux in each passband, obtain a white dwarf temperature of T=13900+/-600 K and a distance of D=51+/-17 pc. Assuming that the primary obeys the Nauenberg mass-radius relation for white dwarfs and allowing for temperature effects, we also find a primary mass M-w/M-circle dot=0.89+/-0.20, a primary radius R-w/R-circle dot=0.0097+/-0.0031 and an orbital separation a/R-circle dot=0.74+/-0.05.

Background: Information on patient symptoms can be obtained by patient self-report or medical records review. Both methods have limitations. Aims: To assess the agreement between self-report and documentation in the medical records of signs/symptoms of respiratory illness (fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, headache, sinus problems, muscle aches, fatigue, earache, and chills). Methods: Respondents were 176 research participants in the Hutterite Influenza Prevention Study during the 2008-2009 influenza season with information about the presence or absence of signs/symptoms from both self-report and primary care medical records. Results: Compared with medical records, lower proportions of self-reported fever, sore throat, earache, cough, and sinus problems were found. Total agreements between self-report and medical report of symptoms ranged from 61% (for sore throat) to 88% (for muscle aches and earache), with kappa estimates varying from 0.05 (for chills) to 0.41 (for cough) and 0.51 (for earache). Negative agreement was considerably higher (from 68% for sore throat to 93% for muscle aches and earache) than positive agreement (from 13% for chills to 58% for earache) for each symptom except cough where positive agreement (77%) was higher than negative agreement (64%). Agreements varied by age group. We found better agreement for earache (kappa=0.62) and lower agreements for headache, sinus problems, muscle aches, fatigue, and chills in older children (aged =5 years) and adults. Conclusions: Agreements were variable depending on the specific symptom. Contrary to research in other patient populations which suggests that clinicians report fewer symptoms than patients, we found that the medical record captured more symptoms than selfreport. Symptom agreement and disagreement may be affected by the perspectives of the person experiencing them, the observer, the symptoms themselves, measurement error, the setting in which the symptoms were observed and recorded, and the broader community and cultural context of patients. © 2012 Primary Care Respiratory Society UK. We introduce a family of Hamiltonian systems for measurement-based quantum computation with continuous variables. The Hamiltonians (i) are quadratic, and therefore two body, (ii) are of short range, (iii) are frustration-free, and (iv) possess a constant energy gap proportional to the squared inverse of the squeezing. Their ground states are the celebrated Gaussian graph states, which are universal resources for quantum computation in the limit of infinite squeezing. These Hamiltonians constitute the basic ingredient for the adiabatic preparation of graph states and thus open new venues for the physical realization of continuous-variable quantum computing beyond the standard optical approaches. We characterize the correlations in these systems at thermal equilibrium. In particular, we prove that the correlations across any multipartition are contained exactly in its boundary, automatically yielding a correlation area law. © 2011 American Physical Society.

Modal analysis is a popular approach used in structural dynamic and aeroelastic problems due to its efficiency. The response of a structure is compo
sed of the sum of orthogonal eigenvectors or modeshapes and corresponding modal frequencies. This paper investigates the importance of modeshapes on the aeroelastic response of the Goland wing subject to structural uncertainties. The wing undergoes limit cycle oscillations (LCO) as a result of the inclusion of polynomial stiffness nonlinearities. The LCO computations are performed using a Harmonic Balance approach for speed, the modal properties of the system are extracted from MSC NASTRAN. Variability in both the wing’s structure and the store centre of gravity location is investigated in two cases:- supercritical and subcritical type LCOs. Results show that the LCO behaviour is only sensitive to change in modeshapes when the nature of the modes are changing significantly.

Turbogenerating is a form of turbocompounding whereby a Turbogenerator is placed in the exhaust stream of an internal combustion engine. The Turbogenerator converts a portion of the expelled energy in the exhaust gas into electricity which can then be used to supplement the crankshaft power. Previous investigations have shown how the addition of a Turbogenerator can increase the system efficiency by up to 9%. However, these investigations pertain to the engine system operating at one fixed engine speed. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the system and in particular the Turbogenerator operate during engine speed transients. On turbocharged engines, turbocharger lag is an issue. With the addition of a Turbogenerator, these issues can be somewhat alleviated. This is done by altering the speed at which the Turbogenerator operates during the engine’s speed transient. During the transients, the Turbogenerator can be thought to act in a similar manner to a variable geometry turbine where its speed can cause a change in the turbocharger turbine’s pressure ratio. This paper shows that by adding a Turbogenerator to a turbocharged engine the transient performance can be enhanced. This enhancement is shown by comparing the turbogenerated engine to a similar turbocharged engine. When comparing the two engines, it can be seen that the addition of a Turbogenerator can reduce the time taken to reach full power by up to 7% whilst at the same time, improve overall efficiency by 7.1% during the engine speed transient.

O veículo guiado automaticamente (AGV) adquirido pelo Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica (DEM) tem vindo a ficar obsoleto devido ao hardware, que nos dias de hoje começa a dar sinais de falhas bem como falta de peças de substituição, e ao software, sendo o PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) usado muito limitado quanto às suas funções de controlo, ficando as principais tarefas de controlo do AGV a cargo de placas eletrónicas de controlo. Para promover o controlo autónomo do AGV, foi decidido retirar toda a parte de hardware que detinha o controlo do mesmo e passou a ser um novo PLC, com maior capacidade de processamento, a executar todo o tipo de controlo necessário ao funcionamento do mesmo. O hardware considerado apenas incluí, de forma resumida, os motores responsáveis pelo movimento e direção, placa de controlo de potência dos motores, placa de interface entre as saídas digitais do PLC e as entradas da placa de controlo de potência dos motores e os demais sensores necessários à deteção de obstáculos, fins de curso da direção, sensores dos postos de trabalho e avisadores de emergência. Todo o controlo de movimento e direção bem como a seleção das ações a executar passou a ficar a cargo do software programado no PLC assim como a interação entre o sistema de supervisão instalado num posto de controlo e o PLC através de comunicação via rádio. O uso do PLC permitiu a flexibilidade de mudar facilmente a forma como as saídas digitais são usadas, ao contrário de um circuito eletrónico que necessita de uma completa remodelação, tempo de testes e implementação para efetuar a mesma função. O uso de um microcontrolador seria igualmente viável para a aplicação em causa, no entanto o uso do PLC tem a vantagem de ser robusto, mais rápido na velocidade de processamento, existência de software de interface de programação bastante intuitivo e de livre acesso, facilidade de alterar a programação localmente ou remotamente, via rádio, acesso a vários protocolos de comunicação robustos como Modbus, Canbus, Profinet, Modnet, etc., e acesso integrado de uma consola gráfica totalmente programável. iv É ainda possível a sua expansão com adição de módulos de entradas e saídas digitais e/ou analógicas permitindo expandir largamente o uso do AGV para outros fins. A solução está a ser amplamente testada e validada no Laboratório de Automação (LabA) do Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica do ISEP (Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto), permitindo a otimização dos sistemas de controlo de direção bem como a interatividade entre o PLC e o programa de interface/supervisão do posto de trabalho.

This thesis offers an explanation for the inconsistent relationship between speed of internationalization and performance outcomes in the context of young international ventures. We argue that the variables of scope of internationalization, entrepreneurial orientation and degree of internationalization play a moderating role in the relationship between speed of internationalization and performance outcomes of international new ventures (INVs). Using primary survey data from INVs in China, we found empirical support for significant moderating impact of scope of internationalization, entrepreneurial orientation variables and no support for the moderating impact of degree of internationalization variable. The results suggest that business managers of INVs shall consider the applied moderating variables as an effective tool kit to enhance firm performance in foreign markets and to mitigate any potential risks of early internationalization.

L’arthrite septique chez les bovins est une affection le plus souvent d’origine bactérienne qui est une cause de boiterie fréquente associée à des pertes économiques importantes. Le traitement, qui doit être initié le plus rapidement possible, s’appuie sur l’utilisation combinée d’anti-inflammatoires non stéroïdiens, d’un ou de plusieurs lavages articulaires ainsi que d’antibiotiques administrés de façon systémique pour un minimum de 3 semaines. Cette durée d’administration constitue une difficulté pour les élevages dits biologiques pour lesquels un cahier des charges strict limite un recours prolongé aux antibiotiques. Ainsi le traitement efficace de diverses conditions infectieuses et celui de l’arthrite septique en particulier dans ces élevages peut être compromis. L’objectif de ce travail est de s’appuyer sur les propriétés antimicrobiennes des solutions de saline hypertonique (SSH) pour limiter l’utilisation des antibiotiques dans les cas d’arthrite septique chez les veaux en intégrant ces solutions pour le lavage des articulations infectées. Notre première étude a consisté à déterminer la sécurité d’emploi de deux concentrations de SSH (une commerciale à 7.2% et une maison à 15%) dans des articulations supposées saines chez le veau. Une synovite sévère associée à des signes cliniques caractéristiques d’atteintes articulaires a été observé lors de l’utilisation de SSH 15%. Son utilisation clinique comme solution de lavage articulaire est par conséquent déconseillée. Concernant la SSH 7.2%, malgré une synovite d’intensité variable, nous n’avons pas noté des signes cliniques caractéristiques d’atteintes articulaires. Son utilisation dans un contexte expérimental d’infection articulaire nous a paru réaliste. Notre seconde étude a permis d’évaluer les effets du lavage articulaire avec de la SSH 7.2% dans un modèle expérimental d’infection à Escherichia coli. Trois groupes de traitement ont été constitués. Dans le premier groupe (traitement standard), un lavage était effectué avec du lactate de Ringer (LRS) et les veaux recevaient une administration biquotidienne de ceftiofur par voie intraveineuse pour 21 jours. Dans le deuxième groupe (LRS), un lavage était effectué avec du LRS et aucun antibiotique n’était administré. Enfin dans le troisième groupe (SSH), un lavage était effectué avec de la SSH 7.2% sans qu’aucun antibiotique ne soit administré. Tous les veaux ont reçu du kétoprofen quotidiennement pendant 3 jours. L’inoculation s’est fait au jour 1 et les traitements ont débuté au jour 2. L’efficacité des traitements a été établie sur des critères cliniques, bactériologiques et cytologiques. Dans le modèle que nous avons utilisé, les trois groupes de traitements ont conduits à une guérison clinique et bactériologique satisfaisante (absence de boiterie, de douleur et de croissance bactérienne dans le liquide articulaire en fin d’étude). La guérison cytologique n’a quant à elle pas été jugée satisfaisante avec des moyennes de comptage et de pourcentage en neutrophiles tout groupe confondu bien supérieures aux valeurs normales (11.39x109/l de neutrophiles représentant 74.73% des leucocytes en fin d’étude). Le traitement avec la SSH 7.2% s’est révélé être significativement plus traumatique et pas plus efficace dans l’élimination de l’infection comparativement au traitement LRS. D’autre part, le lavage articulaire au LRS s’est révélé être aussi efficace et sécuritaire que le traitement standard de l’arthrite septique qui incluait 21 jours de ceftiofur administré par voie intraveineuse. Ainsi, bien que le lavage avec de la SSH 7.2% n’est pas démontré de résultats satisfaisants qui permettrait de limiter le recours aux antibiotiques dans les filières biologiques, l’association d’un lavage au LRS avec le ketoprofen s’est révélée être une alternative possible. De nouvelles études sont requises pour confirmer ses résultats et pour déterminer le rôle respectif du lavage articulaire et du ketoprofen dans la guérison lors d’arthrite septique.

The convergence speed of the standard Least Mean Square adaptive array may be degraded in mobile communication environments. Different conventional variable step size LMS algorithms were proposed to enhance the convergence speed while maintaining low steady state error. In this paper, a new variable step LMS algorithm, using the accumulated instantaneous error concept is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, the accumulated instantaneous error is used to update the step size parameter of standard LMS is varied. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is simpler and yields better performance than conventional variable step LMS.

The overall operation and internal complexity of a particular production machinery can be depicted in terms of clusters of multidimensional points which describe the process states, the value in each point dimension representing a measured variable from the machinery. The paper describes a new cluster analysis technique for use with manufacturing processes, to illustrate how machine behaviour can be categorised and how regions of good and poor machine behaviour can be identified. The cluster algorithm presented is the novel mean-tracking algorithm, capable of locating N-dimensional clusters in a large data space in which a considerable amount of noise is present. Implementation of the algorithm on a real-world high-speed machinery application is described, with clusters being formed from machinery data to indicate machinery error regions and error-free regions. This analysis is seen to provide a promising step ahead in the field of multivariable control of manufacturing systems.

When human observers are exposed to even slight motion signals followed by brief visual transients—stimuli containing no detectable coherent motion signals—they perceive large and salient illusory jumps. This novel effect, which we call “high phi”, challenges well-entrenched assumptions about the perception of motion, namely the minimal-motion principle and the breakdown of coherent motion perception with steps above an upper limit. Our experiments with transients such as texture randomization or contrast reversal show that the magnitude of the jump depends on spatial frequency and transient duration, but not on the speed of the inducing motion signals, and the direction of the jump depends on the duration of the inducer. Jump magnitude is robust across jump directions and different types of transient. In addition, when a texture is actually displaced by a large step beyond dmax, a breakdown of coherent motion perception is expected, but in the presence of an inducer observers again perceive coherent displacements at or just above dmax. In sum, across a large variety of stimuli, we find that when incoherent motion noise is preceded by a small bias, instead of perceiving little or no motion, as suggested by the minimal-motion principle, observers perceive jumps whose amplitude closely follows their own dmax limits.

We show that the significantly different effective temperatures (T(eff)) achieved by the luminous blue variable AG Carinae during the consecutive visual minima of 1985-1990 (T(eff) similar or equal to 22,800 K) and 2000-2001 (T(eff) similar or equal to 17,000 K) place the star on different sides of the bistability limit, which occurs in line-driven stellar winds around T(eff) similar to 21,000 K. Decisive evidence is provided by huge changes in the optical depth of the Lyman continuum in the inner wind as T(eff) changes during the S Dor cycle. These changes cause different Fe ionization structures in the inner wind. The bistability mechanism is also related to the different wind parameters during visual minima: the wind terminal velocity was 2-3 times higher and the mass-loss rate roughly two times smaller in 1985-1990 than in 2000-2003. We obtain a projected rotational velocity of 220 +/- 50 km s(-1) during 1985-1990 which, combined with the high luminosity (L(star) = 1.5 x 10(6) L(circle dot)), puts AG Car extremely close to the Eddington limit modified by rotation (Omega Gamma limit): for an inclination angle of 90 degrees, Gamma(Omega) greater than or similar to 1.0 for M(circle dot) less than or similar to 60. Based on evolutionary models and mass budget, we obtain an initial mass of similar to 100 M(circle dot) and a current mass of similar to 60-70 M(circle dot) for AG Car. Therefore, AG Car is close to, if not at, the Omega Gamma limit during visual minimum. Assuming M = 70 M(circle dot), we find that Gamma(Omega) decreases from 0.93 to 0.72 as AG Car expands toward visual maximum, suggesting that the star is not above the Eddington limit during maximum phases.

We consider semidynamical systems with impulse effects at variable times and we discuss some properties of the limit sets of orbits of these systems such as invariancy, compactness and connectedness. The aim of this thesis project is to develop the Traffic Sign Recognition algorithm for real time. Inreal time environment, vehicles move at high speed on roads. For the vehicle intelligent system itbecomes essential to detect, process and recognize the traffic sign which is coming in front ofvehicle with high relative velocity, at the right time, so that the driver would be able to pro-actsimultaneously on instructions given in the Traffic Sign. The system assists drivers about trafficsigns they did not recognize before passing them. With the Traffic Sign Recognition system, thevehicle becomes aware of the traffic environment and reacts according to the situation.The objective of the project is to develop a system which can recognize the traffic signs in real time.The three target parameters are the system’s response time in real-time video streaming, the trafficsign recognition speed in still images and the recognition accuracy. The system consists of threeprocesses; the traffic sign detection, the traffic sign recognition and the traffic sign tracking. Thedetection process uses physical properties of traffic signs based on a priori knowledge to detect roadsigns. It generates the road sign image as the input to the recognition process. The recognitionprocess is implemented using the Pattern Matching algorithm. The system was first tested onstationary images where it showed on average 97% accuracy with the average processing time of0.15 seconds for traffic sign recognition. This procedure was then applied to the real time videostreaming. Finally the tracking of traffic signs was developed using Blob tracking which showed theaverage recognition accuracy to 95% in real time and improved the system’s average response timeto 0.04 seconds. This project has been implemented in C-language using the Open Computer VisionLibrary.
