Hollow deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)/poly-L-lysine (PLL) capsules were successfully fabricated through a layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly of DNA and PLL on porous CaCO3 microparticles, followed by removal of templates with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA). The enzymatic degradation of the capsules in the presence of alpha-chymotrypsin was explored. The higher the enzyme concentration, the higher is the degradation rate of hollow capsules. in addition, glutaric dialdehyde (GA) cross-linking was found to be another way to manipulate degradation rate of hollow capsules.

Dextran sulfate (DS)/poly-L-lysine (PLL) microcapsules are fabricated by an in situ coacervation method using DS-doped CaCO3 microparticles as templates. Twinned superstructures or spherical CaCO3 microparticles are produced depending on DS concentration in the starting Solution. DS/PLL microcapsules with ellipsoidal or spherical outline are obtained after removal of templates in disodium ethylene diamine tetraacetate dehydrate (EDTA) without PLL. Their shell thickness and negative surface charges increase with the DS weight percentage in the templates. The surface potential of DS/PLL microcapsules.

YPO4 nano/microcrystals with multiform crystal phases and morphologies, such as hexagonal nano/submicroprisms, spherical-like nanoparticles, and nanorods with different length/diameter ratios as well as tetragonal nanospindles, have been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route. A series of controlled experiments indicate that the pH values in the initial solution, phosphorus sources, and the organic additive trisodium citrate (Cit(3-)) are responsible for crystal phase and shape determination of final products. It is found that Cit(3-) as a ligand and shape modifier has the dynamic effect by adjusting the growth rate of different facets under different experimental conditions, resulting in the formation of various geometries of the final products. The possible formation mechanisms for products with diverse architectures have been presented.

In this article, monodisperse spherical zirconia (ZrO2) particles with a narrow size distribution were prepared by the controlled hydrolysis of zirconium butoxide in ethanol, followed by heat treatment in air at low temperature from 300 to 500 degrees C. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectra, kinetic decay, and electron paramagnetic resonance were used to characterize the samples. The experimental results indicate that the annealed ZrO2 samples exhibit broad, intense visible photoluminescence. The annealing temperature is indispensable for the luminescence of the obtained ZrO2 particles. The emission colors of the ZrO2 samples can be tuned from blue to nearly white to dark orange by varying the annealing temperature.

beta-NaYF4 hexagonal microprisms and microrods with different aspect ratios have been prepared via a simple hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectra as well as kinetic decays were used to characterize the samples. The influences of reaction temperature and the molar ratio of NaF to y(3+) on the crystal phases and shapes of final products have been studied in detail. The aspect ratios of products increase gradually with the increase of reaction temperature and NaF/Y3+ molar ratio. The growth mechanisms of crystals prepared under the different conditions are presented systematically. More importantly, the systematical investigation on the luminescence properties of beta-NaYF4:xEu(3+) (x = 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 mol %) with hexagonally microprismatic morphology shows the characteristic emissions of Eu3+ (D-5(J)-F-7(J'), J, J' = 0, 1, 2, 3). Under the excitation of single wavelength light of 397 nm, the luminescence colors of the corresponding products can be tuned feasibly from bluish white to yellow to red by changing the doping concentration of Eu3+.

LaInO3:Eu3+ phosphors were prepared by a Pechini sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), diffuse reflectance, photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence spectra, as well as lifetimes were utilized to characterize the synthesized phosphors. XRD results reveal that the sample begins to crystallize at 600 degrees C and pure LaInO3 phase can be obtained at 800 degrees C. The crystallinity increases upon raising the annealing temperature. The FE-SEM images indicate that LaInO3:Eu3+ phosphors are composed of fine and spherical grains around 40-80 nm in size. Under the excitation of UV light and low-voltage electron-beams, LaInO3:Eu3+ phosphors show the characteristic emissions of the Eu3+ (D-5(J)-F-7(J) J,J(')=0,1,2,3 transitions). The luminescence colors can be tuned from yellowish warm white to red by changing the doping concentration of Eu3+ to some extent. The corresponding luminescence mechanisms have been proposed.

Methacrylic acid based inverse opal hydrogels (MIOHs) have been prepared by controlling the synthesis conditions, including cross-linker content, solvent content, and water content in solvent mixtures to explore the effect of the synthesis conditions (especially solvent content and mixture) on the response performance. Various response events (pH, solvent, ionic strength, 1,4-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride (PDA) response) have been investigated. For pH, solvent response, the same response behaviors have been observed: both the increased solvent (only ethanol) content and the enhanced water content in solvent will lead to the reduced response level of MIOHs compared to that of the increased cross-linker content. However, two different kinds of response behaviors for ionic strength response have been found by adjusting the synthesis conditions. The kinetics of pH response shows characteristics of a diffusion-limited process, and the equilibrium response time is about 20 min, which cannot be reduced by changing the synthesis conditions.

The Sr3Al2O5Cl2:Ce3+,Eu2+ phosphors were prepared by solid state reaction. The obtained phosphors exhibit a strong absorption in the UV-visible region and have two intense emission bands at 444 and 609 nm. The energy transfer from the Ce3+ to Eu2+ ions was observed, and the critical distance has been estimated to be about 24.5 A by spectral overlap method. Furthermore, the developed phosphors can generate lights from yellow-to-white region under the excitation of UV radiation by appropriately tuning the activator content, indicating that they have potential applications as an UV-convertible phosphor for white light emitting diodes.

We report a radio frequency magnetron sputtering method for producing TiO2 shell coatings directly on the surface of ZnO nanorod arrays. ZnO nanorod arrays were firstly fabricated on transparent conducting oxide substrates by a hydrothermal route, and subsequently decorated with TiO2 by a plasma sputtering deposition process. The core/shell nanorods have single-crystal ZnO cores and anatase TiO2 shells. The shells are homogeneously coated onto the whole ZnO nanorods without thickness change. This approach enables us to tailor the thickness of the TiO2 shell for desired photovoltaic applications on a one-nanometer scale. The function of the TiO2 shell as a blocking layer for increasing charge separation and suppression of the surface recombination was tested in dye-sensitized solar cells. The enhanced photocurrent and open-circuit voltage gave rise to increased photovoltaic efficiency and decreased dark current, indicating successful functioning of the TiO2 shell.

Nanocyrstalline Tb3+-doped LaGaO3 phosphors were prepared through a Pechini-type sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence spectra, and lifetimes were utilized to characterize the synthesized phosphors. XRD results reveal that the sample begins to crystallize at 900 degrees C and pure LaGaO3 phase can be obtained at 1000 degrees C. FESEM images indicate that the Tb3+-doped LaGaO3 phosphors are composed of aggregated spherical particles with sizes ranging from 40 to 80 nm. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light and low-voltage electron beams (0.5-3 kV), the Tb3+-doped LaGaO3 phosphors show the characteristic emissions from the LaGaO3 host lattice and the Tb3+ (D-5(3,4)-F-7(6,5,4,3) transitions). The emission colors of Tb3+-doped LaGaO3 phosphors can be tuned from blue to green by changing the excitation wavelength of ultraviolet light and the doping concentration of Tb3+ to some extent. Relevant luminescence mechanisms are discussed.

A novel method based on electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly (LBL) technique for alternate assemblies of polyelectrolyte functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) is proposed. The shortened MWNTs can be functionalized with positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) based on electrostatic interaction. Through electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly, the positively charged PDDA functionalized MWNTs (PDWNTs) and negatively charged citrate-stabilized PtNPs were alternately assembled on a 3-mercaptopropanesulfonic sodium (NIPS) modified gold electrode and also on other negatively charged surface, e.g. quartz slide and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) plate, directly forming the three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured materials. This is a very general and powerful technique for the assembling three-dimensional nanostructured materials containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nanoparticles. Thus prepared multilayer films were characterized by ultraviolet-visiblenear-infrared spectroscopy (UV-vis-NIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Regular growth of the mutilayer films is monitored by UV-vis-NIR.
