A pseudoclassical model for a spinning nonrelativistic particle is presented. The model contains two first-class constraints which after quantization give rise to the Levy-Leblond equation for a spin-1/2 particle.

The density of states of a Bose-condensed gas confined in a harmonic trap is investigated. The predictions of Bogoliubov theory are compared with those of Hartree-Fock theory and of the hydrodynamic model. We show that the Hartree-Fock scheme provides an excellent description of the excitation spectrum in a wide range of energy, revealing a major role played by single-particle excitations in these confined systems. The crossover from the hydrodynamic regime, holding at low energies, to the independent-particle regime is explicitly explored by studying the frequency of the surface mode as a function of their angular momentum. The applicability of the semiclassical approximation for the excited states is also discussed. We show that the semiclassical approach provides simple and accurate formulas for the density of states and the quantum depletion of the condensate.
Physical properties and particle-size fractions of soil organic matter in crop-livestock integration
Resumo:
Crop-livestock integration represents an interesting alternative of soil management, especially in regions where the maintenance of cover crops in no-tillage systems is difficult. The objective of this study was to evaluate soil physical and chemical properties, based on the hypothesis that a well-managed crop-livestock integration system improves the soil quality and stabilizes the system. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design, with five replications. The treatments were arranged in a 6 x 4 factorial design, to assess five crop rotation systems in crop-livestock integration, and native forest as reference of soil undisturbed by agriculture, in four layers (0.0-0.05; 0.05-0.10; 0.10-0.15 and 0.15-0.20 m). The crop rotation systems in crop-livestock integration promoted changes in soil physical and chemical properties and the effects of the different systems were mainly detected in the surface layer. The crops in integrated crop-livestock systems allowed the maintenance of soil carbon at levels equal to those of the native forest, proving the efficiency of these systems in terms of soil conservation. The systems influenced the environmental stability positively; the soil quality indicator mineral-associated organic matter was best related to aggregate stability.

In this present thesis Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) with 9 nm in diameter were selected as nanocarriers in order to study their potential application as drug delivery systems. Therefore the aim of the study was to demonstrate the proof of concept by establishing an efficient system of drug delivery, which would be a valuable tool in biomedical applications, such as the treatement of cancer, by reducing the side effects due to administration of a high concentration of therapeutic agents. As demonstrated in a previous study, the uptake of SPIONs by tumoral human cells was enhanced by the presence of amino groups on their surface. The stabilization of SPIONs were then performed and optimized by the coating of poly(vinylalcohol) and poly(vinylalcohol/vinylamine). Such nanoparticles were known as aminoPVA-SPIONs. The toxicity and the inflammatory reaction of aminoPVA-SPIONs were evaluated in order to establish their potentiel use in the human body. The results demonstrated that the human cells were able to invaginate aminoPVA-SPIONS without revealing any toxicity and inflammatory reaction. The analysis by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cryo-TEM, confocal microscopy and histological staining (i.e. Prussian Blue) showed that the iron oxide core of SPIONs were located in the cytoplasm of cells and concentrated in vesicles. The evaluation of the mechanism of uptake of aminoPVA-SPIONs revealed that their uptake by monolayer cell culture was performed via an active mechanism, which was achieved by a clathrin-mediated endocytosis. Consequently, it was suggested that aminoPVA-SPIONs were good candidates as nanocarriers in drug delivery systems, which were able to reach the cytoplasm of cells. Their incubation with three-dimensional models mimicing tissues, such as differentiated rat brain cell-derived aggregates and spheroids, revealed that aminoPVA-SPIONs were able to invade into deep cell layers according to the stage of growth of these models. In the view of these promising results, drug-SPIONs were prepared by the functionalization of aminoPVA-SPIONs via a biological labile chemical bond by one of these three antineoplastic agents, which are widely used in clinical practice: 5-fluorourdine (Fur) (an antimetabolite), or camptothecin (CPT) (a topoisomerase inhibitor) or doxorubicin (DOX) (an anthracycline which interfere with DNA). The results shown that drug-SPIONs were internalized by human melanoma cells, as it was expected due the previous results with aminoPVA-SPIONs, and in addition they were active as anticancer agents, suggesting the efficient release of the drug from the drug-SPIONs. The results with CPT-SPIONs were the most promising, whereas DOX- SPIONs did not demonstrate a prononced activity of DOX. In conclusion, the results demonstrated that functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles are a promising tool in order to deliver therapeutic agents.

We calculate the ripplon field contribution to the self-energy of an electron exterior to a liquid for planar and spherical geometries. We compare the full dielectric calculation of the electron-liquid interaction with the simpler alternative method consisting of integrating the electron-atom static-induced-dipolar potential through the whole liquid volume. We obtain good agreement between both methods for a nonpolar liquid such as 4He but differences up to 40% for a polar liquid such as water. We study the conditions under which the ripplon contribution to the self-energy is a perturbation. For an electron moving parallel to a planar liquid surface, we calculate the ripplon contribution to its stopping power. For this dynamical case, we conclude that the alternative method is a good approximation even for polar liquids.

Is it possible to build predictive models (PMs) of soil particle-size distribution (psd) in a region with complex geology and a young and unstable land-surface? The main objective of this study was to answer this question. A set of 339 soil samples from a small slope catchment in Southern Brazil was used to build PMs of psd in the surface soil layer. Multiple linear regression models were constructed using terrain attributes (elevation, slope, catchment area, convergence index, and topographic wetness index). The PMs explained more than half of the data variance. This performance is similar to (or even better than) that of the conventional soil mapping approach. For some size fractions, the PM performance can reach 70 %. Largest uncertainties were observed in geologically more complex areas. Therefore, significant improvements in the predictions can only be achieved if accurate geological data is made available. Meanwhile, PMs built on terrain attributes are efficient in predicting the particle-size distribution (psd) of soils in regions of complex geology.

We have studied the adsorption process of non-Brownian particles on a line. Our work differs from previously proposed models in that we have incorporated hydrodynamic interactions between the incoming particles and the preadsorbed particles as well as the surface. We then numerically analyze the effect of these interactions on quantities related to the adsorption process. Comparing our model to the ballistic deposition model (BM) shows a significant discrepancy in the pair correlation function. These results can explain some differences between recent experiments and BM predictions. Finally, the limitations of the applicability of BM are addressed.

Soils constructed after mining often have low carbon (C) stocks and low quality of organic matter (OM). Cover crops are decisive for the recovery process of these stocks, improving the quality of constructed soils. Therefore, the goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of cover crops on total organic C (TOC) stocks, C distribution in physical fractions of OM and the C management index (CMI) of a soil constructed after coal mining. The experiment was initiated in 2003 with six treatments: Hemarthria altissima (T1), Paspalum notatum (T2), Cynodon dactylon (T3), Urochloa brizantha (T4), bare constructed soil (T5), and natural soil (T6). Soil samples were collected in 2009 from the 0.00-0.03 m layer, and the TOC and C stocks in the physical particle size fractions (carbon in the coarse fraction - CCF, and mineral-associated carbon - MAC) and density fractions (free light fraction - FLF; occluded light fraction - OLF, and heavy fraction - HF) of OM were determined. The CMI components: carbon pool index (CPI), lability (L) and lability index (LI) were estimated by both fractionation methods. No differences were observed between TOC, CCF and MAC stocks. The lowest C stocks in FLF and OLF fractions were presented by T2, 0.86 and 0.61 Mg ha-1, respectively. The values of TOC stock, C stock in physical fractions and CMI were intermediate, greater than T5 and lower than T6 in all treatments, indicating the partial recovery of soil quality. As a result of the better adaptation of the species Hemarthria and Brizantha, resulting in greater accumulation of labile organic material, the CPI, L, LI and CMI values were higher in these treatments, suggesting a greater potential of these species for recovery of constructed soils.

CoFe-AgCu granular films of compositions ranging from 0.17-0.44 ferromagnetic atomic concentration were prepared by rf sputtering. The microstructure and the transport and magnetic properties suggested that this family of samples can be classified into two groups with a crossover concentration at about 32 at. %. The experimental results for samples Co34Fe8Ag54Cu4 and Co18Fe8Ag70Cu4, which are representative of both different behaviors, are discussed. For the as-prepared sample with higher CoFe content, an uncompensated out-of-plane antiferromagneticlike microstructure with dominant demagnetizing interactions was observed. The particle growth through the annealing led to large in-plane ferromagneticlike clusters with dominant magnetizing interactions. The thermal dependence of the remanence-to-saturation ratio of the as-prepared and annealed samples indicated the existence of a high degree of magnetic correlations leading to a very low magnetoresistivity: In none of the cases was a Stoner¿Wohlfarth behavior observed. On the contrary, for the sample with lower CoFe content, the magnetoresistivity change was much higher, and the remanence followed the expected behavior, since magnetic correlations were strongly reduced through dilution.

The use of pig slurry (PS) as fertilizer can affect the soil quality and increase total stocks of soil organic carbon (TOC). However, the effects of PS on TOC amount and forms in the soil are not fully understood, particularly in areas under no-tillage (NT). The purpose of this study was to determine TOC contents and stocks in the particulate (POC) and mineral-associated C fractions (MAC) of an Oxisol after nine years of maize-oat rotation under NT, with annual applications of PS, soluble fertilizer and combined fertilization (pig slurry + soluble fertilizer). The experiment was initiated in 2001 in Campos Novos, Santa Catarina, with the following treatments: PS at rates of 0 (without fertilization - PS0); 25 (PS25); 50 (PS50); 100 (PS100); and 200 m3 ha-1yr-1 (PS200); fertilization with soluble fertilizer (SF); and mixed fertilization (PS + SF). The TOC content was determined in samples of six soil layers to a depth of 40 cm, and the POC and MAC contents in four layers to a depth of 20 cm. From the rate of 50 m3 ha-1yr-1 and upwards, the soil TOC content and stock increased according to the PS rates in the layers to a depth of 10 cm. The POC and MAC contents and stocks were higher in the surface layers, with a clear predominance of the second fraction, but a greater relative amplitude in the contents of the first fraction.

The particle orientation in several Y-Fe2O3magnetic tapes has been quantitatively evaluated by using the data of both Mössbauer and hysteresis loop measurements performed in the three orthogonal directions. A texture function has been obtained as a development of real harmonics. The profile of the texture function gives the quality of the different magnetic tapes. A different degree of particle orientation at the surface of the tape is evidenced by means of conversion electron Mössbauer spectra.

We present a theoretical study of the recently observed dynamical regimes of paramagnetic colloidal particles externally driven above a regular lattice of magnetic bubbles [P. Tierno, T. H. Johansen, and T. M. Fischer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 038303 (2007)]. An external precessing magnetic field alters the potential generated by the surface of the film in such a way to either drive the particle circularly around one bubble, ballistically through the array, or in triangular orbits on the interstitial regions between the bubbles. In the ballistic regime, we observe different trajectories performed by the particles phase locked with the external driving. Superdiffusive motion, which was experimentally found bridging the localized and delocalized dynamics, emerge only by introducing a certain degree of randomness into the bubbles size distribution.

Six gases (N((CH3)3), NH2OH, CF3COOH, HCl, NO2, O3) were selected to probe the surface of seven combustion aerosol (amorphous carbon, flame soot) and three types of TiO2 nanoparticles using heterogeneous, that is gas-surface reactions. The gas uptake to saturation of the probes was measured under molecular flow conditions in a Knudsen flow reactor and expressed as a density of surface functional groups on a particular aerosol, namely acidic (carboxylic) and basic (conjugated oxides such as pyrones, N-heterocycles) sites, carbonyl (R1-C(O)-R2) and oxidizable (olefinic, -OH) groups. The limit of detection was generally well below 1% of a formal monolayer of adsorbed probe gas. With few exceptions most investigated aerosol samples interacted with all probe gases which points to the coexistence of different functional groups on the same aerosol surface such as acidic and basic groups. Generally, the carbonaceous particles displayed significant differences in surface group density: Printex 60 amorphous carbon had the lowest density of surface functional groups throughout, whereas Diesel soot recovered from a Diesel particulate filter had the largest. The presence of basic oxides on carbonaceous aerosol particles was inferred from the ratio of uptakes of CF3COOH and HCl owing to the larger stability of the acetate compared to the chloride counterion in the resulting pyrylium salt. Both soots generated from a rich and a lean hexane diffusion flame had a large density of oxidizable groups similar to amorphous carbon FS 101. TiO2 15 had the lowest density of functional groups among the three studied TiO2 nanoparticles for all probe gases despite the smallest size of its primary particles. The used technique enabled the measurement of the uptake probability of the probe gases on the various supported aerosol samples. The initial uptake probability, g0, of the probe gas onto the supported nanoparticles differed significantly among the various investigated aerosol samples but was roughly correlated with the density of surface groups, as expected. The conventional wisdom is that cell-surface receptors interact with ligands expressed on other cells to mediate cell-to-cell communication (trans interactions). Unexpectedly, it has recently been found that two classes of receptors specific for MHC class I molecules not only interact with MHC class I molecules expressed on opposing cells, but also with those on the same cell. These cis interactions are a feature of immunoreceptors that inhibit, rather than activate, cellular functions. Here, we review situations in which cis interactions have been observed, the characteristics of receptors that bind in trans and cis, and the biological roles of cis recognition.

RATIONALE: Induction of oxidative stress and impairment of the antioxidant defense are considered important biological responses following nanoparticle (NP) exposure. The acellular in vitro dithiothreitol (DTT) assay is proposed to measure the oxidative potential of NP. In addition, DTT can be considered as a model compound of sulfur containing antioxidants. The objective of this work is to evaluate the surface reactivity in solution of a NP panel toward DTT. METHOD: The NP panel was composed of four carbonaceous particles, six types of metal oxides and silver with primary size ranged from 7 to 300 nm. Suspensions were prepared in surfactant solution with 30 min sonication. DTT was used as reductant to evaluate the oxidative properties of the different NP. The determination of the NP ability to catalyze electron transfer from DTT to oxygen was carried out as described in Sauvain et al., Nanotoxicology, 2008, 2:3, 121−129. RESULTS: All the carbonaceous NP catalyzed the oxidation of DTT by oxygen following the mass based order: carbon black > diesel exhaust particle > nanotubes > fullerene. A contrasting reactivity was observed for the metallic NP. Except for nickel oxide and metallic silver, which reacted similarly to the carbonaceous NP, all other metal oxides hindered the oxidation of DTT by oxygen, with ZnO being the most effective one. CONCLUSIONS : DTT was stabilized against oxidation in the presence of metal oxide NP in the solution. This suggests that different chemical interactions take place compared with carbonaceous NP. To explain these differences, we hypothesize that DTT could form complexes with the metal oxide surface (or dissolved metal ions), rendering it less susceptible to oxidation. By analogy, such a process could be thought to apply in biological systems with sulfur−containing antioxidants, reducing their buffer capacity. Such NP could thus contribute to oxidative stress by an alternative mechanism.
