Thermal annealing of GaInAs/GaNAs quantum wells (QWs) as well as other nitrogen- and indium-contained QW structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy and its effect on optical properties are investigated. The photoluminescence (PL) and photovoltaic (PV) spectra of annealed GaInAs/GaNAs QWs show that the luminescence properties become degraded due to the N diffusion from the GaNAs barrier layers to the GaInAs well layer. Meantime, the annealing-induced blueshift of the PL peak in this QW system is mainly induced by the change of In distribution, suggesting that the In reorganization is greatly assisted by the N-induced defects. The elucidation of annealing effect in GaInAs/GaNAs QW samples is helpful for a better understanding to the annealing effect in the GaInNAs/GaAs QWs. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Zn1-xMnxSe thin films with different Mn compositions are grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition on GaAs substrate. Good crystallinity of sample is evidenced by X-ray diffraction and rocking-curve measurements. Photoluminescence (PL) properties were carefully studied. A dominant PL peak close to the band edge is observed at low temperature for samples with higher Mn concentration. The temperature-dependent PL and time-resolved photoluminescence show that this emission peak is associated with the recombination of exciton bound to Mn-induced impurity bound states. It is found that rapid thermal annealing can induce reorganization of Mn composition in alloys and significantly reduce the density of impurity induced by Mn incorporation and improve the intrinsic interband transition. Absence of gravity or microgravity influences the cellular functions of bone forming osteoblasts. The underlying mechanism, however, of cellular sensing and responding to the gravity vector is poorly understood. This work quantified the impact of vector-directional gravity on the biological responses of Ros 17/2.8 cells grown on upward-, downward- or edge-on-oriented substrates. Cell morphology and nuclear translocation, cell proliferation and the cell cycle, and cytoskeletal reorganization were found to vary significantly in the three orientations. All of the responses were duration-dependent. These results provide a new insight into understanding how osteoblasts respond to static vector-directional gravity.

In this paper, a quantum chemistry method was used to investigate the effect of different sizes of substituted phenanthrolines on absorption, energy transfer, and the electroluminescent performance of a series of Eu(TTA)(3)L (L = [1,10] phenanthroline (Phen), Pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]phenanthroline (PyPhen), 2-methylprrazino[2,3-f][1,10] phenanthroline(MPP), dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine(DPPz), 11-methyldipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'c]phenazine(MDPz), 11.12-dimethyldipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine(DDPz), and benzo[i]dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (BDPz)) complexes. Absorption spectra calculations show that different sizes of secondary ligands have different effects on transition characters, intensities, and absorption peak positions.

We report a quantum-chemical study of electronic, optical and charge transporting properties of four platinum (II) complexes, pt((CN)-N-Lambda)(2) ((CN)-N-Lambda=phenylpyridine or thiophenepyridine). The lowest-lying absorptions at 442, 440, 447 and 429 nm are all attributed to the mixed transition characters of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and ligand-centered (LC) pi - pi(*) transition. While, unexpectedly, the lowest-lying phosphorescent emissions at 663, 660, 675 and 742 nm are mainly from metal-to-ligand charge transfer ((MLCT)-M-3) ligand-centered (LC) pi ->pi* transition. Ionization potential (IP), electron affinities (EA) and reorganization energy P (lambda(hole/electron)) were obtained to evaluate the charge transfer and balance properties between hole and electron.

Microphase separation of binary mixed A/B polymer brushes exposed to different solvents is studied using Single-Chain-in-Mean-Field simulations. Effects of solvent quality and selectivity, grafting density, composition, and chain-length asymmetry are systematically investigated, and diagrams of morphologies in various solvents are constructed as a function of grafting density and composition or chain-length asymmetry. The structure of the microphase segregated morphologies lacks long-range periodic order, and it is analyzed quantitatively Using Minkowski measures.

Solvent fractionation and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results show that high impact polypropylene (hiPP) produced by a multistage polymerization process consists of PP homopolymer, amorphous ethylene-propylene random copolymer (EPR), and semicrystalline ethylene-propylene copolymer. For the original hiPP particles obtained right after polymerization, direct transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation reveals a fairly homogeneous morphology of the ethylene-propylene copolymer (EP) phase regions inside, while the polyethylene-rich interfacial layer observed between the EP region and the iPP matrix supports that EP copolymers form on the subglobule surface of the original iPP particles. Compared with that in original hiPP particles, the dispersed EP domains in pellets have much smaller average size and relatively uniform size distribution, indicating homogenization of the EP domains in the hiPP by melt-compounding. Upon heat-treatment, phase reorganization occurs in hiPP, and the dispersed EP domains can form a multiple-layered core-shell structure, comprising a polyethylene-rich core, an EPR intermediate layer and an outer shell formed by EP block copolymer, which accounts to some extent for the good toughness-rigidity balance of the material.

Zinc(II)-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazolate complex is an excellent white-light-emitting material. Despite some studies devoted to this complex, no information on the real origin of the unusually broad electroluminescent (EL) emission is available. Therefore, we investigate photoluminescent and EL properties of the zinc complex. Orange phosphorescent emission at 580 nm was observed for the complex in thin film at 77 K, whereas only fluorescent emission was obtained at room temperature. Molecular orbitals, excitation energy, and emission energy of the complex were investigated using quantum chemical calculations. We fabricated the device with a structure of ITO/F16CuPc(5.5 nm)/Zn-complex/Al, where F16CuPc is hexadecafluoro copper phthalocyanine. The EL spectra varied strongly with the thickness of the emissive layer. We observed a significant change in the emission spectra with the viewing angles. Optical interference effects and light emission originating both from fluorescence and from phosphorescence can explain all of the observed phenomena, resulting in the broad light emission for the devices based on the Zn complex. We calculated the charge transfer integral and the reorganization energy to explain why the Zn complex is a better electron transporter than a hole transporter.

Conformational changes of beta-lactoglobulin (beta-LG) induced by anionic phospholipid (dimyristoylphosphatidylglycerol, DMPG) at physiological conditions (pH 7.0) have been investigated by UV-VIS, circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectra. The experimental results suggest that beta-LG-DMPG interactions cause beta-LG a structural reorganization of the secondary structure elements accompanied by an increase in alpha-helical content, and a loosening of the protein tertiary structure. The interaction forces between beta-LG and DMPG are further evaluated by fluorescence spectra. The fluorescence spectral data show that conformational changes in the protein are driven by electrostatic interaction at first, then by hydrophobic interaction between a protein with a negative net charge and a negatively charged phospholipid.

The origins of the single- and double-melting endotherms of isotactic polypropylene crystallized at different temperatures were studied carefully by differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and small-angle X-ray scattering. The experimental data show that spontaneous crystallization occurs when the crystallization temperature is lower than 117 degrees C; thus the lamellae formed are imperfect. At a lower heating rate, the recrystallization or reorganization of these imperfect lamellae leads to double endotherms. On the other hand, when the crystallization temperature is higher than 136 degrees C, two major kinds of lamellae with different thickness are developed during the isothermal process, which also results in the double-melting endotherms. In the intermediate temperature range the lamellae formed are perfect, and there is only a single peak in the distribution of lamellar thickness. This explains the origin of the single-melting endotherm. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A new crystal modification induced by strain and denoted as form II exists alongside the dominant form I structure in the uniaxially oriented poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and the related polymers. The crystal structure of form II for PEEK is also found to possess a two-chain orthorhombic packing with unit cell parameters of a equal to 0.475 nm, b equal to 1.060 nm, and c equal to 1.086 nm. More extended and flattened chain conformation of form II relative to that of form I is expected to account for an 8% increase in c-axis dimension, which is attributed to the extensional deformation fixed in situ through strain-induced crystallization during uniaxial drawing. Annealing experiments suggest that form II is thermodynamically metastable and can be transformed into more stable form I by chain relaxation and reorganization at elevated temperature without external tension. This strain-induced polymorphism exists universally in the poly(aryl ether ketone) family. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The melting behavior of semicrystalline poly(ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). When PEEKK is annealed from the amorphous state, it usually shows two melting peaks. The upper melting peaks arise first, and the lower melting peaks are developed later. The upper melting peaks shown in the DSC thermogram are the combination (addition) of three parts: initial crystal formed before scanning; reorganization; and melting-recrystallization of lower melting peaks in the DSC scanning period. In the study of isothermal crystallization kinetics, the Avrami equation was used to analyze the primary process of the isothermal crystallization; the Avrami constant, n, is about 2 for PEEKK from the melt and 1.5 for PEEKK from the glass state. According to the Lauritzen-Hoffman equation, the kinetic parameter of PEEKK from the melt is 851.5 K; the crystallization kinetic parameter of PEEKK is higher than that of PEEK, and suggests the crystallizability of PEEKK is less than that of PEEK. The study of crystallization on PEEKK under nonisothermal conditions is also reported for cooling rates from 2.5 degrees C/min to 40 degrees C/min, and the nonisothermal condition was studied by Mandelkern analysis. The results show the nonisothermal crystallization is different from the isothermal crystallization. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

C-type lectin is a family of Ca2+ dependent carbohydrate-recognition proteins which play crucial roles in the innate immunity of invertebrates by mediating the recognition of host cells to pathogens and clearing microinvaders as a pattern recognition protein (PRP). The cDNA of Zhikong scallop Chlamys farreri C-type lectin (designated CFLec-1) was cloned by expressed sequence tag (EST) and RACE techniques. The full-length cDNA of CFLec-1 was 1785 bp, consisting of a 5'-terminal untranslated region (UTR) of 66 bp and an unusually long 3' UTR of 1040 bp with seven polyadenylation signal sequences AATAAA and a poly(A) tail. The CFLec-1 cDNA encoded a polypeptide of 221 amino acids with a putative signal peptide of 15 amino acid residues and a mature protein of 206 amino acids. Analysis of the protein domain features indicated a typical long-form carbohydrate-recognition domain (CRD) of 130 residues in the CFLec-1 deduced amino acid sequence. The expression pattern of CFLec-1 transcripts in healthy and bacterial challenged scallops was studied by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. mRNA transcripts of CFLec-1 could be mainly detected in the tissues of haemocytes, gill, gonad and mantle of unchallenged scallops, whereas the expression of CFLec-1 transcripts was increased in all the tested tissues after heat-killed Vibrio anguillarum challenge. The temporal expression of CFLec-1 mRNA in haemolymph challenged by Micrococcus luteus and V anguillarum was both up-regulated and reached the maximum level at 8 and 16 It post stimulation, respectively, and then dropped back to the original level. In order to investigate its immune functions, CFLec- I was recombined and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3)-pLysS as a fusion protein with thioredoxin. The recombinant CFLec-1 agglutinated bacteria E. coli JM109 in vitro, and the agglutination was Ca2+ dependent which could be inhibited by EDTA. But it did not agglutinate M. luteus, Candida lipolytica and animal erythrocytes including rabbit, rat, mouse, chicken, human group A, human group B, human group O. Meanwhile, the recombinant CFLec-1 could inhibit the growth of both E. coli JM 109 and M. luteus, but no inhibition activity against V anguillarum. These result indicated that CFLec-1 was a constitutive and inducible PRP which was involved in the reorganization and clearance of invaders in scallop. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A natural lectin from the plasma of the shrimp Fenneropenaeus chinensis was purified by singlestep affinity chromatography using fetuin-coupled agarose. The purified plasma lectin showed a strong affinity for human A/B/O erythrocytes (RBC), mouse RBC and chicken RBC. The hemagglutinating (HA) activity of the lectin was dependent on Ca2+ and reversibly sensitive to EDTA. This lectin was named FC-L and its inactive form had a molecular mass estimate of 168 kDa. Fifteen N-terminal amino acid sequences of this protein were determined. We performed HA-inhibition assays with several carbohydrates and glycoproteins. FC-L showed a distinct and unique specificity to N-acetylated sugars, particularly sialic acid and sialoproteins. The FC-L also has binding activity to some Gram-negative bacteria which caused disease in shrimp and fish. The activity of FC-L was inhibited at temperatures greater than 75 degrees C and at a pH less than 7 or greater than 11. These results suggest that FC-L may play a role as pattern recognition proteins in the reorganization and clearance of invaders in shrimp F. chinensis. Behavioral and functional imaging studies consistently show that heroin abuse leads to various cognitive impairments, while brain structural changes associated with heroin use remain poorly understood. In the current study, we used voxel-based morphology (VBM), a method sensitive to structural changes of the brain, to investigate the gray concentration in MRI structure images of heroin addicts. Results show that the concentration of the temporal cortex and frontal cortex of heroin users significantly decreased as compared to age/education matched normal controls. Further analysis revealed that this brain structure change was detectable only in the users who had used heroin more than 5 year, but not in the remaining users. These results converge to the abnormality of the brain structure in heroin users and this abnormality is clearly associated with duration of drug use. We then analyzed the large-scale brain structure network in the heroin addicts. As compared to the normal controls, there was significant difference in interregional correlation between the temporal cortex, hippocampus, thalamus, and frontal cortex. Importantly, two major indices of the small-world properties, Clustering coefficient(Cp) and shortest path length (Lp), which are thought to reflect the local specialty and global integrity, were marginal-significantly larger than the normal controls, especially for Lp. These results suggest that chronic use of heroin results in the reorganization of the brain system. Taken together, this thesis has provided compelling evidence for brain structure impairments in chronic heroin users and further characterized the large-scale brain structure network in the same population.
