A principal hypothesis for the evolution of leks (rare and intensely competitive territorial aggregations) is that leks result from females preferring to mate with clustered males. This hypothesis predicts more female visits and higher mating success per male on larger leks. Evidence for and against this hypothesis has been presented by different studies, primarily of individual populations, but its generality has not yet been formally investigated. We took a meta-analytical approach towards formally examining the generality of such a female bias in lekking species. Using available published data and using female visits as an index of female mating bias, we estimated the shape of the relationship between lek size and total female visits to a lek, female visits per lekking male and, where available, per capita male mating success. Individual analyses showed that female visits generally increased with lek size across the majority of taxa surveyed; the meta-analysis indicated that this relationship with lek size was disproportionately positive. The findings from analysing per capita female visits were mixed, with an increase with lek size detected in half of the species, which were, however, widely distributed taxonomically. Taken together, these findings suggest that a female bias for clustered males may be a general process across lekking species. Nevertheless, the substantial variation seen in these relationships implies that other processes are also important. Analyses of per capita copulation success suggested that, more generally, increased per capita mating benefits may be an important selective factor in lek maintenance.

The mixed alkali metal effect is a long-standing problem in glasses. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used by several researchers to study the mixed alkali metal effect, but a detailed analysis of the nearest neighbor environment of the glass former using spin-Hamiltonian parameters was elusive. In this study we have prepared a series of vanadate glasses having general formula (mol %) 40 V2O5-30BaF(2)-(30 - x)LiF-xRbF with x = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30. Spin-Hamiltonian parameters of V4+ ions were extracted by simulating and fitting to the experimental spectra using EasySpin. From the analysis of these parameters it is observed that the replacement of lithium ions by rubidium ions follows a ``preferential substitution model''. Using this proposed model, we were able to account for the observed variation in the ratio of the g parameter, which goes through a maximum. This reflects an asymmetric to symmetric changeover of. the alkali metal ion environment around the vanadium site. Further, this model also accounts for the variation in oxidation state of vanadium ion, which was confirmed from the variation in signal intensity of EPR spectra.

The significant contribution of naturally occurring disulfide bonds to protein stability has encouraged development of methods to engineer non-native disulfides in proteins. These have yielded mixed results. We summarize applications of the program MODIP for disulfide engineering. The program predicts sites in proteins where disulfides can be stably introduced. The program has also been used as an aid in conformational analysis of naturally occurring disulfides in a-helices, antiparallel and parallel beta-strands. Disulfides in a-helices occur only at N-termini, where the first cysteine residue is the N-cap residue of the helix. The disulfide occurs as a CXXC motif and can possess redox activity. In antiparallel beta-strands, disulfides occur exclusively at non-hydrogen bonded (NHB) registered pairs of antiparallel beta-sheets with only 1 known natural example occurring at a hydrogen bonded (HB) registered pair. Conformational analysis suggests that disulfides between HB residue pairs are under torsional strain. A similar analysis to characterize disulfides in parallel beta-strands was carried out. We observed that only 9 instances of cross-strand disulfides exist in a non-redundant dataset. Stereochemical analysis shows that while tbe chi(square) angles are similar to those of other disulfides, the chi(1) and chi(2) angles show more variation and that one of tbe strands is generally an edge strand.

Solder joints in electronic packages undergo thermo-mechanical cycling, resulting in nucleation of micro-cracks, especially at the solder/bond-pad interface, which may lead to fracture of the joints. The fracture toughness of a solder joint depends on material properties, process conditions and service history, as well as strain rate and mode-mixity. This paper reports on a methodology for determining the mixed-mode fracture toughness of solder joints with an interfacial starter-crack, using a modified compact mixed mode (CMM) specimen containing an adhesive joint. Expressions for stress intensity factor (K) and strain energy release rate (G) are developed, using a combination of experiments and finite element (FE) analysis. In this methodology, crack length dependent geometry factors to convert for the modified CMM sample are first obtained via the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD)-based linear extrapolation method to calculate the under far-field mode I and II conditions (f(1a) and f(2a)), (ii) generation of a master-plot to determine a(c), and (iii) computation of K and G to analyze the fracture behavior of joints. The developed methodology was verified using J-integral calculations, and was also used to calculate experimental fracture toughness values of a few lead-free solder-Cu joints. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Colloidal systems offer an effective medium to micro-engineer complex structures without involving sophisticated fabrication procedures. This article presents a deployment strategy of multiple droplets of different colloidal composition and utilizes the inherent capillary flow driven self assembly of nanoparticles to construct stacks of multiple materials on a given glass substrate. Here we used aqueous nano-crystalline titania and nano-amorphous silica solutions as the two materials. Initially, a pure nanotitania (nanosilica) droplet is deployed and allowed to dry partially. Subsequently, a second droplet of pure nanosilica (nanotitania) is deployed co-axially on the partially dried precipitate. The proposed deployment strategy allowed significant morphological differences when the deployment order of nanosilica and nanotitania were interchanged. Compositional analysis performed using EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) showed preferential deposition of nanosilica and nanotitania along the radial as well as the axial plane of the final deposit pattern. The underlying mechanism for such a phenomenon could be attributed to the contact line dynamics of a sessile double droplet. We also observe heteroaggregation of the nanosilica-nanotitania interaction along a narrow interface which resulted in nanotitania particles clustering into isolated islands embedded into a matrix of nanosilica particles. Overall, this work elucidates the evaporation driven dynamics of a mixed colloidal system which displays both macroscopic as well as microscopic phenomena. Such a system could be used to generate ordered arrays of functional materials with engineered micro to nano-scale properties.

The inhibition effect of colchicine (CC) on mild steel (MS) corrosion in 1 M HCl solution has been investigated by electrochemical techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, chronoamperometry and also by the gravimetric method. Polarization studies showed that CC acts as mixed type corrosion inhibitor. The inhibitor adsorption process in the MS/CC/HCl system was studied at different temperatures (303-333 K). The adsorption of CC on MS surface is an exothermic process and obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Based on potential of zero charge values and quantum chemical parameters, the mechanism of adsorption has been proposed.

Cracking of ceramics with tetragonal perovskite grain structure is known to appear at different sites and scale level. The multiscale character of damage depends on the combined effects of electromechanical coupling, prevailing physical parameters and boundary conditions. These detail features are exhibited by application of the energy density criterion with judicious use of the mode I asymptotic and full field solution in the range of r/a = 10(-4) to 10(-2) where r and a are, respectively, the distance to the crack tip and half crack length. Very close to the stationary crack tip, bifurcation is predicted resembling the dislocation emission behavior invoked in the molecular dynamics model. At the macroscopic scale, crack growth is predicted to occur straight ahead with two yield zones to the sides. A multiscale feature of crack tip damage is provided for the first time. Numerical values of the relative distances and bifurcation angles are reported for the PZT-4 ceramic subjected to different electric field to applied stress ratio and boundary conditions that consist of the specification of electric field/mechanical stress, electric displacement/mechanical strain, and mixed conditions. To be emphasized is that the multiscale character of damage in piezoceramics does not appear in general. It occurs only for specific combinations of the external and internal field parameters, elastic/piezoelectric/dielectric constants and specified boundary conditions. In the present paper, by use of the boundary integral equation method and the techniques of Green fundamental solution and singularity analysis, the dynamic infinite plane crack problem is investigated. For the first time, the problem is reduced to solving a system of mixed-typed integral equations in Laplace transform domain. The equations consist of ordinary boundary integral equations along the outer boundary and Cauchy singular integral equations along the crack line. The equations obtained are strictly proved to be equivalent with the dual integral equations obtained by Sih in the special case of dynamic Griffith crack problem. The mixed-type integral equations can be solved by combining the numerical method of singular integral equation with the ordinary boundary element method. Further use the numerical method for Laplace transform, several typical examples are calculated and their dynamic stress intensity factors are obtained. The results show that the method proposed is successful and can be used to solve more complicated problems.

The prediction of cracking direction in composite materials is of significance to the design of composite structures. This paper presents several methods for predicting the cracking direction in the double grooved tension-shear specimen which gives mixed-mode cracking. Five different criteria are used in this analysis: two of them have been used by other investigators and the others are proposed by the present authors. The strain energy density criterion proposed by G.C. Sih is modified to take account of the influence of the anisotropy of the strength on the direction of crack. The two failure criteria of Tsai-Hill and Norris are extended to predict the crack orientation. The stress distributions in the near-notch zone are calculated by using the 8-node quadrilateral isoparametric finite element method. The predictions of all the criteria except one are in good agreement with the experimental measurement. In addition, on the basis of the FEM results, the size of the zone in which the singular term is dominant is estimated.

Pulse fishing may be a global optimal strategy in multicohort fisheries. In this article we compare the pulse fishing solutions obtained by using global numerical methods with the analytical stationary optimal solution. This allows us to quantify the potential benefits associated with the use of periodic fishing in the Northern Stock of hake. Results show that: first, management plans based exclusively on traditional reference targets as Fmsy may drive fishery economic results far from the optimal; second, global optimal solutions would imply, in a cyclical manner, the closure of the fishery for some periods and third, second best stationary policies with stable employment only reduce optimal present value of discounted profit in a 2%.

This paper estimates a standard version of the New Keynesian Monetary (NKM) model augmented with financial variables in order to analyze the relative importance of stock market returns and term spread in the estimated U.S. monetary policy rule. The estimation procedure implemented is a classical structural method based on the indirect inference principle. The empirical results show that the Fed seems to respond to the macroeconomic outlook and to the stock market return but does not seem to respond to the term spread. Moreover, policy inertia and persistent policy shocks are also significant features of the estimated policy rule.

Systematic liquidity shocks should affect the optimal behavior of agents in financial markets. Indeed, fluctuations in various measures of liquidity are significantly correlated across common stocks. Accordingly, this paper empirically analyzes whether Spanish average returns vary cross-sectionally with betas estimated relative to two competing liquidity risk factors. The first one, proposed by Pastor and Stambaugh (2002), is associated with the strength of volume-related return reversals. Our marketwide liquidity factor is defined as the difference between returns highly sensitive to changes in the relative bid-ask spread and returns with low sensitivities to those changes. Our empirical results show that neither of these proxies for systematic liquidity risk seems to be priced in the Spanish stock market. Further international evidence is deserved.

We evaluate the management of the Northern Stock of Hake during 1986-2001. A stochastic bioeconomic model is calibrated to match the main features of this fishing ground. We show how catches, biomass stock and profits would have been if the optimal Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) consistent with the target biomass implied by the Fischler’s Recovery Plan had been implemented. The main finding are: i) an optimal CFP would have generated profits of more than 667 millions euros, ii) if side-payments are allowed (implemented by ITQ’s, for example) these profits increase 26%.
