Progress is reported in the development of a new synthesis method for the design of filters and coatings for use in spaceborne infrared optics. This method uses the Golden Section optimization routine to make a search, using designated dielectric thin film combinations, for the coating design which fulfills the required spectral requirements. The final design is that which uses the least number of layers for the given thin film materials in the starting design. This synthesis method has successfully been used to design broadband anti-reflection coatings on infrared substrates. The 6 micrometers to 18 micrometers anti-reflection coating for the germanium optics of the HIRDLS instrument, to be flown on the NASA EOS-Chem satellite, is given as an example. By correctly defining the target function to describe any specific type of filter in the optimization part of the method, this synthesis method may be used to design general filters for use in spaceborne infrared optics.

The molecular structure of [Li(thf)3 · Sn(SiMe3)3], prepared by a new, one-pot synthesis in 44% yield, has been determined by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study using synchrotron radiation and a CCD detector. The +Li(thf)3 and −Sn(SiMe3)3 moieties are joined by a Li–Sn bond, 2.865(5) Å in length. [Li(thf)3 · Sn(SiMe3)3] is isomorphous with its germanium analogue.

From ortho-phenylenemagnesium (1), 9-phenyl-9-germa-10-silatriptycene (5) was prepared via a simple one pot procedure. The previously prepared 9-methyl-10-phenyl-9,10-digermatriptycene (4) and 5 are the first germanium-containing 9,10-dimetallatriptycenes to be structurally characterised. The availability of these structural data allows a comparative discussion of 9,10-dimetallatriptycenes of Group 14.

New cyclic oligomers of dimesitylgermylene carbodiimides (Mes2GeNCN)n (n = 3 (1) and 4 (2)) were synthesized by reactions of dimesityldichlorogermane with either cyanamide in the presence of triethylamine or lithium cyanamide. The reactions always gave 1, the trimer of the hypothetical (Mes2GeN−CN), as the major compound. Higher oligomers 3 (n up to 20−30) also can be isolated, depending on the reaction conditions. In THF solution at room temperature, 2 and 3 slowly isomerize to 1, which seems to be the most stable compound. X-ray analysis of trimer 1 and tetramer 2 shows unstrained tetrahedral germanium atoms and linear diimine linkers.

The species [{Sn(C2H2iPr3-2,4,6)2}3] has been obtained in a simple, essentially quantitative, synthesis from SnCl2 and ArLi in diethyl ether at low temperature. The crystal structure analysis confirms the trimeric nature of the molecular units but reveals some unusual features. The crystal contains the unusual feature of an asymmetric unit that consists of three units of [{SnAr2}3] in P21/c; the molecular unit is a scalene triangle, showing high consistency between the three molecules, in contrast to analogous trimeric species of silicon or germanium. The SnSn bonds are lengthened (average value 2.942 Å) owing to steric crowding.

The triple- and quadruple-escape peaks of 6.128 MeV photons from the (19)F(p,alpha gamma)(16)O nuclear reaction were observed in an HPGe detector. The experimental peak areas, measured in spectra projected with a restriction function that allows quantitative comparison of data from different multiplicities, are in reasonably good agreement with those predicted by Monte Carlo simulations done with the general-purpose radiation-transport code PENELOPE. The behaviour of the escape intensities was simulated for some gamma-ray energies and detector dimensions; the results obtained can be extended to other energies using an empirical function and statistical properties related to the phenomenon. We determined by means of photoluminescence measurements the dependence on temperature of the transition energy of excitons in GaAs/Al(x)Ga(1-x)As quantum wells with different alloy concentrations (with different barrier heights). Using a fitting procedure, we determined the parameters which describe the behavior of the excitonic transition energy as a function of temperature according to three different theoretical models. We verified that the temperature dependence of the excitonic transition energy does not only depend on the GaAs material but also depends on the barrier material, i.e. on the alloy composition. The effect of confinement on the temperature dependence of the excitonic transition is discussed.

The introduction of high-permittivity gate dielectric materials into complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology has reopened the interest in Ge as a channel material mainly due to its high hole mobility. Since HfO(2) and ZrO(2) are two of the most promising dielectric candidates, it is important to investigate if Hf and Zr may diffuse into the Ge channel. Therefore, using ab initio density functional theory calculations, we have studied substitutional and interstitial Hf and Zr impurities in c-Ge, looking for neutral defects. We find that (i) substitutional Zr and Hf defects are energetically more favorable than interstitial defects; (ii) under oxygen-rich conditions, neither Zr nor Hf migration towards the channel is likely to occur; (iii) either under Hf- or Zr-rich conditions it is very likely, particularly for Zr, that defects will be incorporated in the channel.

The evolution of the energy states of the phosphorous donor in silicon with magnetic field has been the subject of previous experimental and theoretical studies to fields of 10 T. We now present experimental optical absorption data to 18 T in combination with theoretical data to the same field. We observe features that are not revealed in the earlier work, including additional interactions and anti-crossings between the different final states. For example, according to the theory, for the ""1s -> 2p (+)"" transition, there are anti-crossings at about 5, 10, 14, 16, and 18 T. In the experiments, we resolve at least the 5, 10, and 14 T anti-crossings, and our data at 16 and 18 T are consistent with the calculations.

Bismuth germanate glasses are interesting materials due to their physical properties and their unique structural characteristics caused by the coordination changes of bismuth and germanium atoms. Glasses of the bismuth germanate system were prepared by melting/molding method and were investigated concerning their thermal and structural properties. The structural analysis of the samples was carried out by micro-Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopes. It was observed that the glass structure is formed basically by GeO(4) tetrahedral units also having the formation of the GeO(6) octahedral units. BiO(2) was considered a network former by observing the presence of octahedral BiO(6) and pyramidal BiO(3) groups in the local structure of the samples. An absorption band observed at 1103 cm(-1) in the IR spectrum of the undoped glass was attributed to the Bi-O-Ge and/or Bi-O-Bi linkage vibration. The said band shifted to lower wavenumbers after the CeO(2) addition thus reflecting changes in the glass network. Cerium oxide was an efficient oxidant agent to prevent the darkening of the glasses which was probably associated to the reduction of Bi ions. However, CeO(2) was incorporated as a local network modifier in the glass structure even at concentrations of 0.2 mol%. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Diatraea saccharalis F. is one of the greatest pests of the sugar cane culture. This report aimed to characterize the germanium region of the sugarcane borer by light and transmission electron microscopy, emphasizing the morphological steps of the ovarian cluster formation. In the germanium of this insect, four zones could be morphologically identified during the cluster formation. In the most apical end of each ovariole - Zone I - the germ line stem cells undergo complete mitotic division, originating the cystoblasts. In the Zone II, each cystoblast produces a group of eight cells, the cystocytes, which are interconnected by the ring canals. Clusters containing all the cystocytes in the meiosis, characterizes the Zone III. Germ cells with ultrastructural features of apoptosis are also detected in this Zone. In the Zone IV the cystocytes differentiate, morphologically, into one oocyte and seven nurse cells. Interstitial somatic cells and pre-follicle cells exhibit, in their cytoplasm, heterogeneous vacuoles containing degenerated cellular fragments, characterized as apoptotic bodies. Our results pointed out to the morphological evidences related with important control mechanisms for new clusters/follicles production and for the cellular arrangement into the germanium, resulting from the programmed cell death. We believe that the morphological characterization of ovarian cluster formation in D. saccharalis provided valuable information for the understanding of the initial steps of oogenesis and contributed for the knowledge of the cellular mechanisms related with the oocyte production and with reproduction in insects.

The sol-gel method combined with a spin-coating technique has been successfully applied for the preparation of rare-earth doped silica:germania films used for the fabrication of erbium-doped waveguide amplifiers (EDWA), presenting several advantages over other methods for the preparation of thin films. As with other methods, the sol-gel route also shows some drawbacks, such as cracks related to the thickness of silica films and high hydrolysis rate of certain precursors such as germanium alkoxides. This article describes the preparation and optical characterization of erbium and ytterbium co-doped SiO2:GeO2 crack-free thick films prepared by the sol-gel route combined with a spin-coating technique using a chemically stable non-aqueous germanium oxide solution as an alternative precursor. The non-crystalline films obtained are planar waveguides exhibiting a single mode at 1,550 nm with an average thickness of 3.9 mu m presenting low percentages of porosity evaluated by the Lorentz-Lorenz Effective Medium Approximation, and low stress, according to the refractive index values measured in both transversal electric and magnetic polarizations. Weakly confining core layers (0.3% < Delta n < 0.75%) were obtained according to the refractive index difference between the core and buffer layers, suggesting that low-loss coupling EDWA may be obtained. The life time of the erbium I-4(13/2) metastable state was measured as a function of erbium concentration in different systems and based on these values it is possible to infer that the hydroxyl group was reduced and the formation of rare-earth clusters was avoided.

We study the relationship between the optical gap and the optical-absorption tail breadth for the case of amorphous gallium arsenide (a-GaAs). In particular, we analyze the optical-absorption spectra corresponding to some recently prepared a-GaAs samples. The optical gap and the optical-absorption tail breadth corresponding to each sample is determined. Plotting the optical gap as a function of the corresponding optical-absorption tail breadth, we note that a trend, similar to that found for the cases of the hydrogenated amorphous silicon and hydrogenated amorphous germanium, is also found for the case of a-GaAs. The impact of alloying on the optical-absorption spectrum associated with a-GaAs is also briefly examined. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

The present paper focuses on the structural, electronic, and compositional properties of Ge25Ga10S65 glasses before and after UV illumination in air using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques. The XPS Ge 3d spectra reveal the existence of Ge-O bonds in the surface region of illuminated glass. In the case of this sample, XAS O K-edge spectra showed the formation of an enriched region of oxygen atoms in the glass bulk, indicating a different bonding structure of oxygen at the surface and in the bulk of the glass. Moreover, the structural changes that occur after UV illumination in the glass sample are identified as the formation of a homogeneous germanium oxide surface layer followed by an intermediary Ge25Ga10S65-yOz subsurface region. Arsenic and germanium have been evaluated as internal standards to minimize matrix effects on the direct determination of selenium in milk by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) using tubes with integrated platform, pre-treated with W together with I'd as chemical modifier. The efficiency of As and Ge as internal standards for 25 mu g L-1 Se plus 500 mu g (L)-1 As or Ge in diluted (1 + 9 v/v) milk plus 1.0% (v/v) HNO3 was evaluated by means of correlation graphs plotted from the normalized absorbance signals (n = 20) of internal standard (axis gamma) versus analyte (axis x). The equations that describe the linear regression were: A(As)= - 0.004 +/- 0.019 +/- 1.02 + 0.019 A(Se) (r=0.9967 +/- 0.005); A(Ge)= - 0.0 17 +/- 0.015 + 1.01 +/- 0.015 A(Se) (r = 0.9978 +/- 0.004). Samples and reference solutions were automatically spiked with 500 mu g L-1 Ge or As and 1.0% (v/v) HNO3 by the autosampler. For 20 mu L of aqueous standard solutions, analytical curves in the 5.00-40.0 mu g L-1 Se range were established using the ratio of Se absorbance to internal standard absorbance (A(Se)A(IS)) versus analyte concentration, and good linear correlations were obtained. The characteristic mass was 40 pg Se. Limits of detection were 0.55 and 0.40 mu g L-1 with As and Ge as the internal standard, respectively. Relative standard deviations (RSD) for a sample containing 25 mu g L-1 Se were 1.2% and 1.0% (n = 12) using As and Ge, respectively. The RSD without internal standardization was about 6%. The accuracy of the proposed method was evaluated by an addition-recovery experiment and all recovered values were in the 99-105% range with IS and in the 70-80% range without IS. Using Ge as the internal standard, results of analysis of standard reference materials were in agreement with certified values at a 95% confidence level. The selenium concentration for 10 analyzed milk samples varied from 5.0 to 20 mu g L-1. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
