本论文以青藏高原东北部海北地区高寒灌丛(Alpine Shrub)生态系统为研究对象,利用微气象观测系统及涡度相关(Eddy Covariance)技术,自2003年1月1日至2005年12月31日对该类广布于青藏高原的典型高寒草地类型进行长期连续观测。在对生态系统CO2净交换(NEE)以及群落叶面积指数(LAI)、生物量等生物学指标和光合有效辐射(PAR)、温度、土壤水分、脉冲性降水事件等主要环境因子进行连续监测的基础上,重点分析和探讨了海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统净生态系统CO2交换(NEE)在时、日、月及年际尺度上的变化模式,生长季与非生长季高寒灌丛生态系统CO2净交换特征,高寒灌丛生态系统大气CO2源/汇年际差异,土壤温度、昼夜温差、光合有效辐射、脉冲性降水事件等主要环境因子影响。从而,揭示了不同时间尺度下的高寒灌丛生态系统NEE变化规律,阐明主要环境因子对生态系统NEE的影响,明确了该生态系统大气CO2源/汇状况及其季节分布模式;同时,也为青藏高原区域尺度的高寒草地生态系统CO2通量研究和碳收支的估算提供科学依据和基础数据,对进一步揭示我国乃至亚洲陆地生态系统的碳收支状况有着重要意义。主要研究结果概括为以下几个方面: 1、海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统净生态系统CO2交换时动态特征存在很大的季节性差异,暖季小时NEE变化振幅大,CO2净吸收的极值一般出现在午间,最大吸收量为1.7 g CO2 m-2 h-1左右。夜间为CO2净释放,净生态系统交换值较为稳定(0.5~ 0.9 g CO2 m-2 h-1);冷季日变化振幅极小,除14:00~18:00时一定量CO2释放外,其余时段通量均很小。 2、从日平均净生态系统CO2交换来看,6~9月日平均NEE一般为负值(CO2净吸收),2003~2005年6~9 月间日平均NEE分别为-5.65 g CO2 m-2 d-1、-6.08 g CO2 m-2 d-1和-4.81 g CO2 m-2 d-1;而10~12月及翌年1~5月期间日平均NEE通常为正值(CO2净释放),该时段3年高寒灌丛日平均净生态系统CO2交换分别为1.91 g CO2 m-2 d-1、1.90 g CO2 m-2 d-1和2.19 g CO2 m-2 d-1。2003~2004年高寒灌丛生态系统CO2净释放维持天数分别为249 d、 254 d和264 d,2003年净释放维持天数最少,而净吸收维持天数2005年最少(101d)。2003、2004和2005年全年日平均CO2净吸收分别为0.611 g CO2 m-2 d-1、0.759 g CO2 m-2 d-1和0.167 g CO2 m-2 d-1。 3、就季节差异而言,2003、2004和2005年整个生长季节高寒灌丛平均CO2日净生态系统交换分别为-3.99 g CO2 m-2 d-1、-4.59 g CO2 m-2 d-1、-3.27 g CO2 m-2 d-1。7、8月生长季节CO2净吸收的最高,2003、2004、2005年7月和8月份高寒灌丛生态系统CO2净吸收分别为222 g CO2 m-2 和224 g CO2 m-2、355 g CO2 m-2和216 g CO2 m-2、263 g CO2 m-2和186 g CO2 m-2。在相对短暂的生长季节海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统表现出显著的大气CO2净吸收能力,2003、2004和2005年生长季节高寒灌丛生态系统CO2净吸收量分别为610 g CO2 m-2、701 g CO2 m-2和500 g CO2 m-2。相对于温度等环境因子,高寒灌丛生态系统生长季白昼NEE小时变化规律更受光合有效辐射变化的影响。 4、2003~2005年非生长季节日平均NEE分别为1.83 g CO2 m-2、2.01 g CO2 m-2和2.07 g CO2 m-2。4月和10月是非生长季节CO2净释放的最高月份,2003、2004和2005年全月净释放量为105 g CO2 m-2和77 g CO2 m-2、105 g CO2 m-2和117 g CO2 m-2及105 g CO2 m-2和138 g CO2 m-2,2003~2005年整个非生长季CO2净释放分别为CO2为388 g CO2 m-2、425 g CO2 m-2和439 g CO2 m-2。非生长季节海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统NEE小时变化与5 cm土壤温度存在极显著的正相关关联,表明在非生长季节土壤温度是影响青藏高原高寒灌丛生态系统NEE的重要环境因子。 5、从生态系统CO2源/汇特征来看,海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统2003、2004和2005年全年净CO2固定总量分别为223 g CO2 m-2 a-1、277 g CO2 m-2 a-1和61 g CO2 m-2 a-1,3年平均CO2值为187 g CO2 m-2 a-1。在为期3年的研究时段海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统表现为弱的大气二氧化碳的汇。 6、高寒灌丛群落表观光合量子产额(a)和表观最大光合速率(Pmax)受叶面积指数的影响。在6~9月份期间,由于LAI的不同,a和Pmax值差异明显,7、8月份较高而6月和9月明显较低。海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统a和Pmax值高于西藏当雄地区高寒草甸生态系统,但低于平原地区相关生态系统。 维持天数2005年最少(101d)。2003、2004和2005年全年日平均CO2净吸收分别为0.611 g CO2 m-2 d-1、0.759 g CO2 m-2 d-1和0.167 g CO2 m-2 d-1。 3、就季节差异而言,2003、2004和2005年整个生长季节高寒灌丛平均CO2日净生态系统交换分别为-3.99 g CO2 m-2 d-1、-4.59 g CO2 m-2 d-1、-3.27 g CO2 m-2 d-1。7、8月生长季节CO2净吸收的最高,2003、2004、2005年7月和8月份高寒灌丛生态系统CO2净吸收分别为222 g CO2 m-2 和224 g CO2 m-2、355 g CO2 m-2和216 g CO2 m-2、263 g CO2 m-2和186 g CO2 m-2。在相对短暂的生长季节海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统表现出显著的大气CO2净吸收能力,2003、2004和2005年生长季节高寒灌丛生态系统CO2净吸收量分别为610 g CO2 m-2、701 g CO2 m-2和500 g CO2 m-2。相对于温度等环境因子,高寒灌丛生态系统生长季白昼NEE小时变化规律更受光合有效辐射变化的影响。 4、2003~2005年非生长季节日平均NEE分别为1.83 g CO2 m-2、2.01 g CO2 m-2和2.07 g CO2 m-2。4月和10月是非生长季节CO2净释放的最高月份,2003、2004和2005年全月净释放量为105 g CO2 m-2和77 g CO2 m-2、105 g CO2 m-2和117 g CO2 m-2及105 g CO2 m-2和138 g CO2 m-2,2003~2005年整个非生长季CO2净释放分别为CO2为388 g CO2 m-2、425 g CO2 m-2和439 g CO2 m-2。非生长季节海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统NEE小时变化与5 cm土壤温度存在极显著的正相关关联,表明在非生长季节土壤温度是影响青藏高原高寒灌丛生态系统NEE的重要环境因子。 5、从生态系统CO2源/汇特征来看,海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统2003、2004和2005年全年净CO2固定总量分别为223 g CO2 m-2 a-1、277 g CO2 m-2 a-1和61 g CO2 m-2 a-1,3年平均CO2值为187 g CO2 m-2 a-1。在为期3年的研究时段海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统表现为弱的大气二氧化碳的汇。 6、高寒灌丛群落表观光合量子产额(a)和表观最大光合速率(Pmax)受叶面积指数的影响。在6~9月份期间,由于LAI的不同,a和Pmax值差异明显,7、8月份较高而6月和9月明显较低。海北地区高寒灌丛生态系统a和Pmax值高于西藏当雄地区高寒草甸生态系统,但低于平原地区相关生态系统。

Dentro del contexto del Cambio Global ha surgido el interés en conocer y entender la dinámica de los ecosistemas. La técnica Eddy Covariance (EC) es utilizada a nivel global para el registro continuo de los intercambios turbulentos de masa y energía en una diversidad de ecosistemas, con sensores montados en torres micrometeorológicas y en plataformas móviles. Así mismo, el empleo de modelos atmosféricos de mesoescala suma un aporte a la compresión de los procesos de intercambio suelo-atmósfera dentro de la Capa Límite Atmosférica. Lo enunciado anteriormente motivó la elaboración de la presente tesis en la cual se planteó caracterizar los intercambios turbulentos, estudiando su variabilidad sobre un bosque seco nativo y uno implantado en Argentina y evaluar el desempeño del modelo BRAMS-4.2 en alta resolución en reproducir estos intercambios. A partir de los valores observados, se encontró que la concentración media diaria y los flujos de CO2 presentaron un marcado ciclo diurno. El valor medio de las concentraciones en el bosque implantado fue igual a 736.2 más o menos 42.4 mg/m3 y en el bosque nativo igual a 641.9 más o menos 22.4 mg/m3. Los flujos de CO2 presentaron una amplitud media mayor en verano igual a 1.42 mg/m2s (0.27 mg/m2s) en el bosque implantado (bosque nativo). Los flujos de calor latente registrados en el bosque implantado fueron mayores a los registrados en el bosque nativo. La implementación del sistema de sensores instalados a bordo del avión Sky Arrow 650 ERA permitió realizar mediciones en los primeros metros de la atmósfera. El modelo BRAMS-4.2 supo reproducir razonablemente bien distintas variables meteorológicas así como también los flujos de masa y energía. Los resultados obtenidos en esta tesis son un aporte para ampliar el conocimiento sobre los intercambios turbulentos entre la vegetación y las capas bajas de la atmósfera en distintos ecosistemas de Argentina.

This paper proposes a new non-parametric method for estimating model-free, time-varying liquidity betas which builds on realized covariance and volatility theory. Working under a liquidity-adjusted CAPM framework we provide evidence that liquidity risk is a factor priced in the Greek stock market, mainly arising from the covariation of individual liquidity with local market liquidity, however, the level of liquidity seems to be an irrelevant variable in asset pricing. Our findings provide support to the notion that liquidity shocks transmitted across securities can cause market-wide effects and can have important implications for portfolio diversification strategies. ©2012 Elsevier B.V. Film cooling is extensively used to provide protection against the severe thermal environment in gas turbine engines. Most of the computational studies on film cooling flow have been done using steady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes calculation procedures. However, the flowfield associated with a jet in a crossflow is highly unsteady and complex with different types of vortical structures. In this paper, a computational investigation about the unsteady phenomena of a jet in a crossflow is performed using detached eddy simulation. Detailed computation of a single row of 35 deg round holes on a flat plate has been obtained for a 1.0 blowing ratio and a 2.0 density ratio. First, time-step size, grid resolution, and computational domain tests for an unsteady simulation have been conducted. Comparison between the results of unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes calculation, detached eddy simulation, and large eddy simulation is also performed. Comparison of the time-averaged detached eddy simulation prediction with the measured film-cooling effectiveness shows that the detached eddy simulation prediction is reasonable. From present detached eddy simulations, the influential coherent vortical structures of a film cooling flow can be seen. The unsteady physics of jet in a crossflow interactions and a jet liftoff in film cooling flows have been explained.

Broadcast spawning invertebrates that live in shallow, high-energy coastal habitats are subjected to oscillatory water motion that creates unsteady flow fields above the surface of animals. The frequency of the oscillatory fluctuations is driven by the wave period, which will influence the stability of local flow structures and may affect fertilization processes. Using an oscillatory water tunnel, we quantified the percentage of eggs fertilized on or near spawning green sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis. Eggs were sampled in the water column, wake eddy, substratum and aboral surface under a range of different periods (T = 4.5 – 12.7 s) and velocities of oscillatory flow. The root-mean-square wave velocity (rms(uw)) was a good predictor of fertilization in oscillatory flow, although the root-mean-square of total velocity (rms(u)), which incorporates all the components of flow (current, wave and turbulence), also provided significant predictions. The percentage of eggs fertilized varied between 50 – 85% at low flows (rms(uw) < 0.02 m s-1), depending on the location sampled, but declined to below 10% for most locations at higher rms(uw). The water column was an important location for fertilization with a relative contribution greater than that of the aboral surface, especially at medium and high rms(uw) categories. We conclude that gametes can be successfully fertilized on or near the parent under a range of oscillatory flow conditions.

O presente trabalho tem como principal objetivo, estudar a relação entre a presença de vulnerabilidade para a manifestação de sintomatologia psiquiátrica e a sua relação com a capacidade para o trabalho e, como objetivo secundário, estudar o impacto da função cognitiva executiva na capacidade para o trabalho. Os problemas de saúde mental são comuns na população em geral, sendo estimado que uma em cada cinco pessoas pode apresentar sintomatologia de algum distúrbio mental ao longo de um ano. Por seu lado, a doença mental apresenta um impacto bastante significativo ao nível do absentismo laboral, tendo como consequência um custo bastante significativo ao nível do desempenho laboral (produtividade), bem como ao nível da saúde física e mental (Wu, Chi, Chen, Wang & Jin, 2009). O excessivo Stress Ocupacional experienciado pelos trabalhadores tem sido fortemente associado com o aparecimento de doenças e prejuízo da saúde mental interferindo na sua capacidade para o trabalho, produtividade, bem estar e qualidade de vida. A uma amostra de 125 trabalhadores foram aplicadas as escalas WAI (escala de índice de capacidade para o trabalho), BSI (Inventário de sintomas psicopatológicos) e o ESI (Inventário de Externalização versão reduzida) e, numa subamostra de 30 trabalhadores, foram aplicados os testes neuropsicológicos pela seguinte ordem: CAT (Halstead Category Test), WCST (Wisconci Card Sort), e a TH (Tower of Hanoi). Foram confirmadas todas as hipóteses do estudo o que sugere que existe, de facto, uma relação entre a presença de vulnerabilidade para manifestação de sintomatologia psiquiátrica com a capacidade para o trabalho e, também, que as funções executivas manifestam grande impacto na capacidade para o trabalho. Assim, a implementação de um programa de promoção para o trabalho e prevenção de risco nos trabalhadores torna-se crucial para o aumento da produtividade dos trabalhadores e, consequentemente, da própria organização.

This paper is on offshore wind energy conversion systems installed on the deep water and equipped with back-to-back neutral point clamped full-power converter, permanent magnet synchronous generator with an AC link. The model for the drive train is a five-mass model which incorporates the dynamic of the structure and the tower in order to emulate the effect of the moving surface. A three-level converter and a four-level converter are the two options with a fractional-order control strategy considered to equip the conversion system. Simulation studies are carried out to assess the quality of the energy injected into the electric grid. Finally, conclusions are presented. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The momentum anomaly has been widely documented in the literature. However, there are still many issues where there is no consensus and puzzles left unexplained. One is that strategies based on momentum present a level of risk that is inconsistent with the diversification that it offers. Moreover, recent studies indicate that this risk is variable over time and mostly strategy-specific. This work project hypothesises and proves that this evidence is explained by the portfolio constitution of the momentum strategy over time, namely the covariance and correlation between companies in the top and down deciles and across them.

A simplified general circulation model has been used to investigate the chain of causality whereby changes in tropospheric circulation and temperature are produced in response to stratospheric heating perturbations. Spinup ensemble experiments have been performed to examine the evolution of the tropospheric circulation in response to such perturbations. The primary aim of these experiments is to investigate the possible mechanisms whereby a tropospheric response to changing solar activity over the 11-yr solar cycle could be produced in response to heating of the equatorial lower stratosphere. This study therefore focuses on a stratospheric heating perturbation in which the heating is largest in the tropics. For comparison, experiments are also performed in which the stratosphere is heated uniformly at all latitudes and in which it is heated preferentially in the polar region. Thus, the mechanisms discussed have a wider relevance for the impact of stratospheric perturbations on the troposphere. The results demonstrate the importance of changing eddy momentum fluxes in driving the tropospheric response. This is confirmed by the lack of a similar response in a zonally symmetric model with fixed eddy forcing. Furthermore, it is apparent that feedback between the tropospheric eddy fluxes and tropospheric circulation changes is required to produce the full model response. The quasigeostrophic index of refraction is used to diagnose the cause of the changes in eddy behavior. It is demonstrated that the latitudinal extent of stratospheric heating is important in determining the direction of displacement of the tropospheric jet and storm track.

Nanoparticles emitted from road traffic are the largest source of respiratory exposure for the general public living in urban areas. It has been suggested that the adverse health effects of airborne particles may scale with the airborne particle number, which if correct, focuses attention on the nanoparticle (less than 100 nm) size range which dominates the number count in urban areas. Urban measurements of particle size distributions have tended to show a broadly similar pattern dominated by a mode centred on 20–30 nm diameter particles emitted by diesel engine exhaust. In this paper we report the results of measurements of particle number concentration and size distribution made in a major London park as well as on the BT Tower, 160 m high. These measurements taken during the REPARTEE project (Regents Park and BT Tower experiment) show a remarkable shift in particle size distributions with major losses of the smallest particle class as particles are advected away from the traffic source. In the Park, the traffic related mode at 20–30 nm diameter is much reduced with a new mode at <10 nm. Size distribution measurements also revealed higher number concentrations of sub-50 nm particles at the BT Tower during days affected by higher turbulence as determined by Doppler Lidar measurements and indicate a loss of nanoparticles from air aged during less turbulent conditions. These results suggest that nanoparticles are lost by evaporation, rather than coagulation processes. The results have major implications for understanding the impacts of traffic-generated particulate matter on human health.

Rigorous upper bounds are derived on the saturation amplitude of baroclinic instability in the two-layer model. The bounds apply to the eddy energy and are obtained by appealing to a finite amplitude conservation law for the disturbance pseudoenergy. These bounds are to be distinguished from those derived in Part I of this study, which employed a pseudomomentum conservation law and provided bounds on the eddy potential enstrophy. The bounds apply to conservative (inviscid, unforced) flow, as well as to forced-dissipative flow when the dissipation is proportional to the potential vorticity. Bounds on the eddy energy are worked out for a general class of unstable westerly jets. In the special case of the Phillips model of baroclinic instability, and in the limit of infinitesimal initial eddy amplitude, the bound states that the eddy energy cannot exceed ϵβ2/6F where ϵ = (U − Ucrit)/Ucrit is the relative supercriticality. This bound captures the essential dynamical scalings (i.e., the dependence on ϵ, β, and F) of the saturation amplitudes predicted by weakly nonlinear theory, as well as exhibiting remarkable quantitative agreement with those predictions, and is also consistent with heuristic baroclinic adjustment estimates.

To study the transient atmospheric response to midlatitude SST anomalies, a three-layer quasigeostrophic (QG) model coupled to a slab oceanic mixed layer in the North Atlantic is used. As diagnosed from a coupled run in perpetual winter conditions, the first two modes of SST variability are linked to the model North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and eastern Atlantic pattern (EAP), respectively, the dominant atmospheric modes in the Atlantic sector. The two SST anomaly patterns are then prescribed as fixed anomalous boundary conditions for the model atmosphere, and its transient responses are established from a large ensemble of simulations. In both cases, the tendency of the air–sea heat fluxes to damp the SST anomalies results in an anomalous diabatic heating of the atmosphere that, in turn, forces a baroclinic response, as predicted by linear theory. This initial response rapidly modifies the transient eddy activity and thus the convergence of eddy momentum and heat fluxes. The latter transforms the baroclinic response into a growing barotropic one that resembles the atmospheric mode that had created the SST anomaly in the coupled run and is thus associated with a positive feedback. The total adjustment time is as long as 3–4 months for the NAO-like response and 1–2 months for the EAP-like one. The positive feedback, in both cases, is dependent on the polarity of the SST anomaly, but is stronger in the NAO case, thereby contributing to its predominance at low frequency in the coupled system. However, the feedback is too weak to lead to an instability of the atmospheric modes and primarily results in an increase of their amplitude and persistence and a weakening of the heat flux damping of the SST anomaly.

EVENT has been used to examine the effects of 3D cloud structure, distribution, and inhomogeneity on the scattering of visible solar radiation and the resulting 3D radiation field. Large eddy simulation and aircraft measurements are used to create realistic cloud fields which are continuous or broken with smooth or uneven tops. The values, patterns and variance in the resulting downwelling and upwelling radiation from incident visible solar radiation at different angles are then examined and compared to measurements. The results from EVENT confirm that 3D cloud structure is important in determining the visible radiation field, and that these results are strongly influenced by the solar zenith angle. The results match those from other models using visible solar radiation, and are supported by aircraft measurements of visible radiation, providing confidence in the new model.
