The effect of an ordered array of nanocones on a conducting substrate immersed in the plasma on the transport of the plasma ions is investigated. The real conical shape of the cones is rigorously incorporated into the model. The movement of 10^5 CH3+ ions in the plasma sheath modified by the nanocone array is simulated. The ions are driven by the electric fields produced by the sheath and the nanostructures. The surface charge density and the total charge on the nanotips with different aspect ratios are computed. The ion transport simulation provides important characteristics of the displacement and velocity of the ions. The relative ion distribution along the lateral surfaces of the carbon nanotips is computed as well. It is shown that a rigorous account of the realistic nanostructure shape leads to very different distribution of the ion fluxes on the nanostructured surfaces compared to the previously reported works. The ion flux distribution is a critical factor in the nucleation process on the substrate and determines the nanostructure growth patterns.

Passively protected railway crossings are a major rail safety issue in Australia. Such crossings cannot be upgraded as such crossings are too numerous and the cost involved is prohibitive. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have been shown to improve road safety and are widely used. These systems could be a solution to improve safety of passively protected crossings at a lower cost. Such complementary ADAS could result in driver’s over-trust due to the absence of Humane Machine Interface reflecting the quality of the information or the state of the ADAS (failure status). This paper demonstrates that driver’s exposure to crossing exhibiting fail-safe and non-fail safe properties could result in improperly allocating trust between technologies. We conducted a driving simulator study where participants (N=58) were exposed to three types of level crossing warning system on passive and active crossings. The results show that a significant proportion of participants over-trust the ADAS. Such drivers exhibit the same driving performance with the ADAS as when exposed to infrastructure based active crossing protection. They do not take the necessary safety precautions as they have a faster speed approach, reduced number of gaze toward the rail tracks and fail to stop at the crossing.

An effective control of the ion current distribution over large-area (up to 103 cm2) substrates with the magnetic fields of a complex structure by using two additional magnetic coils installed under the substrate exposed to vacuum arc plasmas is demonstrated. When the magnetic field generated by the additional coils is aligned with the direction of the magnetic field generated by the guiding and focusing coils of the vacuum arc source, a narrow ion density distribution with the maximum current density 117 A m-2 is achieved. When one of the additional coils is set to generate the magnetic field of the opposite direction, an area almost uniform over the substrate of 103 cm2 ion current distribution with the mean value of 45 A m-2 is achieved. Our findings suggest that the system with the vacuum arc source and two additional magnetic coils can be effectively used for the effective, high throughput, and highly controllable plasma processing.

The catalytic activities, to the reduction of SO2 by CO, of clusters PtlAum (l + m = 2) with or without preadsorbing CO molecules are investigated using first-principles density functional theory. We find that the PtAu(CO)n (n = 1–3) clusters show more excellent catalytic properties than either pure metallic catalysts. Preadsorption of CO to the catalysts could effectively avoid platinum-based catalyst sulfur poisoning; as more CO molecules preadsorbed to the catalysts, the energy barriers for the carbonyl sulfide (COS) molecule’s desorption from the catalyst are remarkably decreased. We propose an ideal catalytic cycle to simultaneously get rid of SO2 and CO over the catalysts PtAu(CO)3.

A better understanding of the behaviour of prepared cane and bagasse, and the ability to model the mechanical behaviour of bagasse as it is squeezed in a milling unit to extract juice, would help identify how to improve the current process. There are opportunities to decrease bagasse moisture from a milling unit. The behaviour of bagasse in chutes is poorly understood. Previous investigations have shown that juice flow through bagasse obeys Darcy’s permeability law, that the grip of the rough surface of the grooves on the bagasse can be represented by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion for soils, and that the internal mechanical behaviour of the bagasse is critical state behaviour similar to that for sand and clay. Progress has been made in the last 11 years towards implementing a mechanical model for bagasse in finite element software. The objective is to be able to correctly simulate various simple mechanical loading conditions measured in the laboratory. Combining these behaviours together is thought to have a high probability of reproducing the complicated stress conditions in a milling unit. This paper reports on progress made towards modelling the fifth and final (and most challenging) of the simple loading conditions: the shearing of heavily over-consolidated bagasse, using a specific model for bagasse in a multi-element simulation.

A better understanding of the behaviour of prepared cane and bagasse, and the ability to model the mechanical behaviour of bagasse as it is squeezed in a milling unit to extract juice, would help identify how to improve the current process. For example, there are opportunities to decrease bagasse moisture from a milling unit. Also, the behaviour of bagasse in chutes is poorly understood. Progress has been made in the last ten years towards implementing a mechanical model for bagasse in finite element software. The objective has been to be able to simulate simple mechanical loading conditions measured in the laboratory, which, when combined together, have a high probability of reproducing the complicated stress conditions in a milling unit. This paper reports on the successful simulation of part of the fifth and final (and most challenging) loading condition, the shearing of heavily over-consolidated bagasse, and determining material property values through the use of powerful and free parameter estimation software.

A better understanding of the behaviour of prepared cane and bagasse, and the ability to model the mechanical behaviour of bagasse as it is squeezed in a milling unit to extract juice, would help identify how to improve the current process, for example to reduce final bagasse moisture. Previous investigations have proven that juice flow through bagasse obeys Darcy’s permeability law, that the grip of the rough surface of the grooves on the bagasse can be represented by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion for soils, and that the internal mechanical behaviour of the bagasse is critical state behaviour similar to that for sand and clay. Current Finite Element Models (FEM) available in commercial software have adequate permeability models. However, no commercially available software seems to contain an adequate mechanical model for bagasse. The same software contains a few material models for soil and other materials, while the coding of hundreds of developed models for soil and other materials remains confidential at universities and government research centres. Progress has been made in the last ten years towards implementing a mechanical model for bagasse in finite element software code. This paper builds on that progress and carries out a further step towards obtaining an adequate material model. The fifth and final loading condition outlined previously, shearing of heavily over-consolidated bagasse, is outlined.

The issue of using informative priors for estimation of mixtures at multiple time points is examined. Several different informative priors and an independent prior are compared using samples of actual and simulated aerosol particle size distribution (PSD) data. Measurements of aerosol PSDs refer to the concentration of aerosol particles in terms of their size, which is typically multimodal in nature and collected at frequent time intervals. The use of informative priors is found to better identify component parameters at each time point and more clearly establish patterns in the parameters over time. Some caveats to this finding are discussed.

Titanate nanotubes (TNT) supported AgI nanoparticles were prepared by a two-step method: the deposition of Ag2O on titanate nanotubes from AgNO3 solution and the subsequent I-adsorption process from NaI solution. It is found that the supported AgI samples exhibited excellent photoactivity for the selective oxidation of benzylamine to the corresponding imine under visible light illumination and the photocatalyst can be used for many times without apparent activity loss. X-ray diffraction studies, transmission electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption measurements were used for the characterization of the as-prepared and recycled AgI samples. It is found that under visible light irradiation, AgI partially decomposed to produce Ag/AgI nanostructure and thus stabilized. The photoactivity of supported Ag/AgI for the selective oxidation of benzylamine was studied in terms of the light intensity, wavelength, temperature and substituent. It is proposed that the formation of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles should be responsible for the high activity and selectivity.

Communicating the mining industry’s water use is fundamental to maintaining its social license to operate but the majority of corporate reporting schemes list indicators. The Minerals Council of Australia’s Water Accounting Framework was designed to assist the minerals industry obtain consistency in its accounting method and in the definitions of terms used in water reporting. The significance of this paper is that it shows that the framework has been designed to be sufficiently robust to describe any mining/mineral related operation. The Water Accounting Framework was applied across four operations over three countries producing four commodities. The advantages of the framework were then evident through the presentation of the reports. The contextual statement of the framework was able to explain contrasting reuse efficiencies. The Input-Output statements showed that evaporation was a significant loss for most of the operations in the study which highlights a weakness of reporting schemes that focus on discharge volumes. The framework method promotes data reconciliation which proved the presence of flows that two operations in the study had neglected to provide. Whilst there are many advantages of the framework, the major points are that the reporting statements of the framework, when presented together, can better enable the public to understand water interactions at a site-level and allows for valid comparisons between sites, regardless of locale and commodity. With mining being a global industry, these advantages are best realised if there was international adoption of the framework.

Clipped was a solo developed from a showing of Stage One Creative Development: Experience Has No Shadow at the Judith Wright Centre for Contemporary Arts in 2010. The solo was choreographed for EDC dancer Elise May as part of EDC Solo Festival 2011. The solo showcased the twisting movement of the dancer, feminine and awkward, sensual and fragile, carving abstract images through the space. In the Courier Mail dance critic Olivia Stewart commented, “Artistic director Natalie Weir and Vanessa Mafe retrospectively gave EDC’s Riannon McLean and Elise May movement that harnessed their power and prowess” (2011, 54) In the The Australian dance critic Shaaron Boughen comments, “May's own performance in Vanessa Mafe's Clipped was mature and sophisticated, showing the breadth of skills that this young artist has developed” (2011, 19)

Introduction and Aims. The rate of alcohol-related emergency department (ED) presentations in young people has increased dramatically in recent decades. Injuries are the most common type of youth alcohol-related ED presentation, yet little is known about these injuries in young people. This paper describes the characteristics of alcohol-related ED injury presentations in young people over a 13-year period and determines if they differ by gender and/or age group (adolescents: 12–17 years; young adults: 18–24 years). Design and Method. The Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit (QISU) database collects injury surveillance data at triage in participating EDs throughout Queensland, Australia. A total of 4667 cases of alcohol-related injuries in young people (aged 12–24 years) were identified in the QISU database between January 1999 and December 2011, using an injury surveillance code and nursing triage text-based search strategy. Results. Overall, young people accounted for 38% of all QISU alcohol-related ED injury presentations in patients aged 12 years or over. The majority of young adults presented with injuries due to violence and falls, whereas adolescents presented due to self-harm or intoxication without other injury. Males presented with injuries due to violence, whereas females presented with alcohol-related self-harm and intoxication. Discussion and Conclusions. There is a need for more effective ways of identifying the degree of alcohol involvement in injuries among young people presenting to EDs.

Governments around the world want to know a lot about who we are and what we’re doing online and they want communications companies to help them find it. We don’t know a lot about when companies hand over this data, but we do know that it’s becoming increasingly common.

A travel article about a music festival in Port Hedland, Western Australia. At first, the crowd gathers in small groups, as though we’ve arrived at a picnic day. Girls in long skirts wearing bands in their hair call out across the wide lawn of the Turf Club, and run over to meet friends. They sit cross-legged in the sun, half swaying to the music, chatting. On stage, Thelma Plum, a girl with a voice from the 1960s, circles her lyrics with her hands. You wonder if she’s casting a spell, an appeal to the decade of revolutions...
