A dragonfly inspired flapping wing is investigated in this paper. The flapping wing is actuated from the root by a PZT-5H and PZN-7%PT single crystal unimorph in the piezofan configuration. The nonlinear governing equations of motion of the smart flapping wing are obtained using the Hamilton's principle. These equations are then discretized using the Galerkin method and solved using the method of multiple scales. Dynamic characteristics of smart flapping wings having the same size as the actual wings of three different dragonfly species Aeshna Multicolor, Anax Parthenope Julius and Sympetrum Frequens are analyzed using numerical simulations. An unsteady aerodynamic model is used to obtain the aerodynamic forces. Finally, a comparative study of performances of three piezoelectrically actuated flapping wings is performed. The numerical results in this paper show that use of PZN-7%PT single crystal piezoceramic can lead to considerable amount of wing weight reduction and increase of lift and thrust force compared to PZT-5H material. It is also shown that dragonfly inspired smart flapping wings actuated by single crystal piezoceramic are a viable contender for insect scale flapping wing micro air vehicles.

The Maximum Weight Independent Set (MWIS) problem on graphs with vertex weights asks for a set of pairwise nonadjacent vertices of maximum total weight. The complexity of the MWIS problem for hole-free graphs is unknown. In this paper, we first prove that the MWIS problem for (hole, dart, gem)-free graphs can be solved in O(n(3))-time. By using this result, we prove that the MWIS problem for (hole, dart)-free graphs can be solved in O(n(4))-time. Though the MWIS problem for (hole, dart, gem)-free graphs is used as a subroutine, we also give the best known time bound for the solvability of the MWIS problem in (hole, dart, gem)-free graphs. The presence of new matter fields charged under the Standard Model gauge group at intermediate scales below the Grand Unification scale modifies the renormalization group evolution of the gauge couplings. This can in turn significantly change the running of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model parameters, in particular the gaugino and the scalar masses. In the absence of new large Yukawa couplings we can parameterise all the intermediate scale models in terms of only two parameters controlling the size of the unified gauge coupling. As a consequence of the modified running, the low energy spectrum can be strongly affected with interesting phenomenological consequences. In particular, we show that scalar over gaugino mass ratios tend to increase and the regions of the parameter space with neutralino Dark Matter compatible with cosmological observations get drastically modified. Moreover, we discuss some observables that can be used to test the intermediate scale physics at the LHC in a wide class of models.

This study uses precipitation estimates from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission to quantify the spatial and temporal scales of northward propagation of convection over the Indian monsoon region during boreal summer. Propagating modes of convective systems in the intraseasonal time scales such as the Madden-Julian oscillation can interact with the intertropical convergence zone and bring active and break spells of the Indian summer monsoon. Wavelet analysis was used to quantify the spatial extent (scale) and center of these propagating convective bands, as well as the time period associated with different spatial scales. Results presented here suggest that during a good monsoon year the spatial scale of this oscillation is about 30 degrees centered around 10 degrees N. During weak monsoon years, the scale of propagation decreases and the center shifts farther south closer to the equator. A strong linear relationship is obtained between the center/scale of convective wave bands and intensity of monsoon precipitation over Indian land on the interannual time scale. Moreover, the spatial scale and its center during the break monsoon were found to be similar to an overall weak monsoon year. Based on this analysis, a new index is proposed to quantify the spatial scales associated with propagating convective bands. This automated wavelet-based technique developed here can be used to study meridional propagation of convection in a large volume of datasets from observations and model simulations. The information so obtained can be related to the interannual and intraseasonal variation of Indian monsoon precipitation.

Ubiquitous Computing is an emerging paradigm which facilitates user to access preferred services, wherever they are, whenever they want, and the way they need, with zero administration. While moving from one place to another the user does not need to specify and configure their surrounding environment, the system initiates necessary adaptation by itself to cope up with the changing environment. In this paper we propose a system to provide context-aware ubiquitous multimedia services, without user’s intervention. We analyze the context of the user based on weights, identify the UMMS (Ubiquitous Multimedia Service) based on the collected context information and user profile, search for the optimal server to provide the required service, then adapts the service according to user’s local environment and preferences, etc. The experiment conducted several times with different context parameters, their weights and various preferences for a user. The results are quite encouraging.

Some bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) exhibit high crack initiation toughness due to shear band mediated plastic flow at the crack tip and yet do not display additional resistance to crack growth due to the lack of a microstructure. Thus, at crack initiation, the fracture behavior of BMGs transits from that of ductile alloys to that of brittle ceramics. In this paper, we attempt to understand the physics behind the characteristic length from the notch root at which this transition occurs, through testing of four-point bend specimens made of a nominally ductile Zr-based BMG in three different structural states. In the as-cast state, both symmetric (mode I) and asymmetric (mixed mode) bend specimens are tested. The process of shear band mediated plastic flow followed by crack initiation at the notch root was monitored through in situ imaging. Results show that stable crack growth occurs inside a dominant shear band through a distance of, similar to 60 mu m, irrespective of the structural state and mode mixity, before attaining criticality. Detailed finite element simulations show that this length corresponds to the distance from the notch root over which a positive hydrostatic stress gradient prevails. The mean ridge heights on fractured surfaces are found to correlate with the toughness of the BMG. The Argon and Salama model, which is based on the meniscus instability phenomenon at the notch root, is modified to explain the experimentally observed physics of fracture in ductile BMGs. The goal of optimization in vehicle design is often blurred by the myriads of requirements belonging to attributes that may not be quite related. If solutions are sought by optimizing attribute performance-related objectives separately starting with a common baseline design configuration as in a traditional design environment, it becomes an arduous task to integrate the potentially conflicting solutions into one satisfactory design. It may be thus more desirable to carry out a combined multi-disciplinary design optimization (MDO) with vehicle weight as an objective function and cross-functional attribute performance targets as constraints. For the particular case of vehicle body structure design, the initial design is likely to be arrived at taking into account styling, packaging and market-driven requirements. The problem with performing a combined cross-functional optimization is the time associated with running such CAE algorithms that can provide a single optimal solution for heterogeneous areas such as NVH and crash safety. In the present paper, a practical MDO methodology is suggested that can be applied to weight optimization of automotive body structures by specifying constraints on frequency and crash performance. Because of the reduced number of cases to be analyzed for crash safety in comparison with other MDO approaches, the present methodology can generate a single size-optimized solution without having to take recourse to empirical techniques such as response surface-based prediction of crash performance and associated successive response surface updating for convergence. An example of weight optimization of spaceframe-based BIW of an aluminum-intensive vehicle is given to illustrate the steps involved in the current optimization process.

The blending of perfluorinated bile ester derivatives with the gelator 2,3-didecyloxyanthracene (DDOA) yields a new class of hybrid organo- and aerogels displaying a combination of optical and mechanical properties that differ from those of pure gels. Indeed, the nanofibers constituting the hybrid organogels emit polarized blue light and display dichroic near-UV absorption via the achiral DDOA molecules, thanks to their association with a chiral bile ester. Moreover, the thermal stability and the mechanical yield stress of the mixed organogels in DMSO are enhanced for blends of DDOA with the deoxycholic gelator (DC11) having a C-11 chain, as compared to the pure components' gels. When the chain length of the ester is increased to C-13 (DC13) a novel compound for aerogel formation directly in scCO(2) is obtained under the studied conditions. A mixture of this compound with DDOA is also able to gelate scCO(2) leading to novel composite aerogel materials. As revealed by SAXS measurements, the hybrid and the pure DDOA and DC13 aerogels display cell parameters that are very similar. These SAXS experiments suggest that crystallographic conditions are very favorable for the growth of hybrid molecular arrangements in which DDOA and DC13 units could be interchanged. Specific molecular interactions between two components are not always a pre-requisite condition for the formation of a hybrid nanostructured material in which the components mutually induce properties.

The deformation behaviour of macrocrystalline and nanocrystalline nickel shows a striking similarity in terms of higher intragranular misorientation and a texture with dominant Brass component on rolling. This is in contrast to microcrystalline nickel, with lower intragranular misorientation and typical Copper type texture. This has been attributed to the free surfaces in macrocrystalline sample and grain boundaries in nanocrystalline sample. Experimental evidence of `Grain Boundary Affected Zone' (GBAZ) showing multi-slip in contrast to limited slip in the grain interiors has been provided. The similarity in evolution of texture and intragranular misorientation is explained on the basis of reduced contribution from the GBAZ at the two extreme length scales.

The mechanical behaviour of cohesive-frictional granular materials is a combination of the strength pervading as intergranular friction (represented as an angle of internal friction - Phi), and the cohesion (C) between these particles. Most behavioral or constitutive models of this class of granular materials comprise of a cohesion and frictional component with no regard to the length scale i.e. from the micro structural models through the continuum models. An experimental study has been made on a model granular material, viz. angular sand with different weights of binding agents (varying degrees of cohesion) at multiple length scales to physically map this phenomenon. Cylindrical specimen of various diameters - 10, 20, 38, 100, 150 mm (and with an aspect ratio of 2) are reconstituted with 2, 4 and 8% by weight of a binding agent. The magnitude of this cohesion is analyzed using uniaxial compression tests and it is assumed to correspond to the peak in the normalized stress-strain plot. Increase in the cohesive strength of the material is seen with increasing size of the specimen. A possibility of ``entanglement'' occurring in larger specimens is proposed as a possible reason for deviation from a continuum framework.

We analyze the utility of edge cracked semicircular disk (ECSD) for rapid assessment of fracture toughness using compressive loading. Continuing our earlier work on ECSD, a theoretical examination here leads to a novel way for synthesizing weight functions using two distinct form factors. The efficacy of ECSD mode-I weight function synthesized using displacement and form factor methods is demonstrated by comparing with finite element results. Theory of elasticity in conjunction with finite element method is utilized to analyze crack opening potency of ECSD under eccentric compression to explore newer configurations of ECSD for fracture testing.

Propagation of convective systems in the meridional direction during boreal summer is responsible for active and break phases of monsoon over south Asia. This region is unique in the world in its characteristics of monsoon variability and is in close proximity of mountains like the Himalayas. Here, using an atmospheric general circulation model, we try to understand the role of orography in determining spatial and temporal scales of these convective systems. Absence of orography (noGlOrog) decreased the simulated seasonal mean precipitation over India by 23 % due to delay in onset by about a month vis-a-vis the full-mountain case. In noGlOrog, poleward propagations were absent during the delayed period prior to onset. Post-onset, both simulations had similar patterns of poleward propagations. The spatial and temporal scales of propagating clouds bands were determined using wavelet analysis. These scales were found to be different in full-mountain and no-mountain experiments in June-July. However, after the onset of monsoon in noGlOrog, these scales become similar to that with orography. Simulations with two different sets of convection schemes confirmed this result. Further analysis shows that the absence (presence) of meridional propagations during early (late) phase of summer monsoon in noGlOrog was associated with weaker (stronger) vertical shear of zonal wind over south Asia. Our study shows that orography plays a major role in determining the time of onset over the Indian region. However, after onset, basic characteristics of propagating convective systems and therefore the monthly precipitation over India, are less sensitive to the presence of orography and are modulated by moist convective processes.

The question of whether the dramatic slowing down of the dynamics of glass-forming liquids near the structural glass transition is caused by the growth of one or more correlation lengths has received much attention in recent years. Several proposals have been made for both static and dynamic length scales that may be responsible for the growth of timescales as the glass transition is approached. These proposals are critically examined with emphasis on the dynamic length scale associated with spatial heterogeneity of local dynamics and the static point-to-set or mosaic length scale of the random first order transition theory of equilibrium glass transition. Available results for these length scales, obtained mostly from simulations, are summarized, and the relation of the growth of timescales near the glass transition with the growth of these length scales is examined. Some of the outstanding questions about length scales in glass-forming liquids are discussed, and studies in which these questions may be addressed are suggested.

We study models of interacting fermions in one dimension to investigate the crossover from integrability to nonintegrability, i.e., quantum chaos, as a function of system size. Using exact diagonalization of finite-sized systems, we study this crossover by obtaining the energy level statistics and Drude weight associated with transport. Our results reinforce the idea that for system size L -> infinity nonintegrability sets in for an arbitrarily small integrability-breaking perturbation. The crossover value of the perturbation scales as a power law similar to L-eta when the integrable system is gapless. The exponent eta approximate to 3 appears to be robust to microscopic details and the precise form of the perturbation. We conjecture that the exponent in the power law is characteristic of the random matrix ensemble describing the nonintegrable system. For systems with a gap, the crossover scaling appears to be faster than a power law.

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (PE) is a structural polymer widely used in biomedical implants. The mechanical properties of PE can be improved either by controlled crystalline orientation (texture) or by the addition of reinforcing agents. However, the combinatorial effect has not received much attention. The objective of this study was to characterize the structure and mechanical properties of PE composites incorporating multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) subjected to hot rolling. The wide angle X-ray diffraction studies revealed that mechanical deformation resulted in a mixture of orthorhombic and monoclinic crystals. Furthermore, the presence of nanoparticles resulted in lower crystallinity in PE with smaller crystallite size, more so in RGO than in MWCNT composites. Rolling strengthened the texture of both orthorhombic and the monoclinic phases in PE. Presence of RGO weakened the texture of both phases of PE after rolling whereas MWCNT only mildly weakened the texture. This resulted in a reduction in the elastic modulus of RGO composites whereas moduli of neat polymer and the MWCNT composite increased after rolling. This study provides new insight into the role of nanoparticles in texture evolution during polymer processing with implications for processing of structural polymer composites.
