This thesis aims at empowering software customers with a tool to build software tests them selves, based on a gradual refinement of natural language scenarios into executable visual test models. The process is divided in five steps: 1. First, a natural language parser is used to extract a graph of grammatical relations from the textual scenario descriptions. 2. The resulting graph is transformed into an informal story pattern by interpreting structurization rules based on Fujaba Story Diagrams. 3. While the informal story pattern can already be used by humans the diagram still lacks technical details, especially type information. To add them, a recommender based framework uses web sites and other resources to generate formalization rules. 4. As a preparation for the code generation the classes derived for formal story patterns are aligned across all story steps, substituting a class diagram. 5. Finally, a headless version of Fujaba is used to generate an executable JUnit test. The graph transformations used in the browser application are specified in a textual domain specific language and visualized as story pattern. Last but not least, only the heavyweight parsing (step 1) and code generation (step 5) are executed on the server side. All graph transformation steps (2, 3 and 4) are executed in the browser by an interpreter written in JavaScript/GWT. This result paves the way for online collaboration between global teams of software customers, IT business analysts and software developers.

The urban heat island is a well-known phenomenon that impacts a wide variety of city operations. With greater availability of cheap meteorological sensors, it is possible to measure the spatial patterns of urban atmospheric characteristics with greater resolution. To develop robust and resilient networks, recognizing sensors may malfunction, it is important to know when measurement points are providing additional information and also the minimum number of sensors needed to provide spatial information for particular applications. Here we consider the example of temperature data, and the urban heat island, through analysis of a network of sensors in the Tokyo metropolitan area (Extended METROS). The effect of reducing observation points from an existing meteorological measurement network is considered, using random sampling and sampling with clustering. The results indicated the sampling with hierarchical clustering can yield similar temperature patterns with up to a 30% reduction in measurement sites in Tokyo. The methods presented have broader utility in evaluating the robustness and resilience of existing urban temperature networks and in how networks can be enhanced by new mobile and open data sources.

Existing distributed hydrologic models are complex and computationally demanding for using as a rapid-forecasting policy-decision tool, or even as a class-room educational tool. In addition, platform dependence, specific input/output data structures and non-dynamic data-interaction with pluggable software components inside the existing proprietary frameworks make these models restrictive only to the specialized user groups. RWater is a web-based hydrologic analysis and modeling framework that utilizes the commonly used R software within the HUBzero cyber infrastructure of Purdue University. RWater is designed as an integrated framework for distributed hydrologic simulation, along with subsequent parameter optimization and visualization schemes. RWater provides platform independent web-based interface, flexible data integration capacity, grid-based simulations, and user-extensibility. RWater uses RStudio to simulate hydrologic processes on raster based data obtained through conventional GIS pre-processing. The program integrates Shuffled Complex Evolution (SCE) algorithm for parameter optimization. Moreover, RWater enables users to produce different descriptive statistics and visualization of the outputs at different temporal resolutions. The applicability of RWater will be demonstrated by application on two watersheds in Indiana for multiple rainfall events.

This research attempts to analyze the effects of open government data on the administration and practice of the educational process by comparing the contexts of Brazil and England. The findings illustrate two principal dynamics: control and collaboration. In the case of control, or what is called the "data-driven" paradigm, data help advance the cause of political accountability through the disclosure of school performance. In collaboration, or what is referred to as the "data-informed" paradigm, data is intended to support the decision-making process of administrators through dialogical processes with other social actors.

One of the current challenges of Ubiquitous Computing is the development of complex applications, those are more than simple alarms triggered by sensors or simple systems to configure the environment according to user preferences. Those applications are hard to develop since they are composed by services provided by different middleware and it is needed to know the peculiarities of each of them, mainly the communication and context models. This thesis presents OpenCOPI, a platform which integrates various services providers, including context provision middleware. It provides an unified ontology-based context model, as well as an environment that enable easy development of ubiquitous applications via the definition of semantic workflows that contains the abstract description of the application. Those semantic workflows are converted into concrete workflows, called execution plans. An execution plan consists of a workflow instance containing activities that are automated by a set of Web services. OpenCOPI supports the automatic Web service selection and composition, enabling the use of services provided by distinct middleware in an independent and transparent way. Moreover, this platform also supports execution adaptation in case of service failures, user mobility and degradation of services quality. The validation of OpenCOPI is performed through the development of case studies, specifically applications of the oil industry. In addition, this work evaluates the overhead introduced by OpenCOPI and compares it with the provided benefits, and the efficiency of OpenCOPI s selection and adaptation mechanism

The expansion of citizen participation in the public sphere depends directly of access information on the performance of elected representatives, especially with regard to their voting decisions during their terms. The Information Science can assist in this process, proposing and evaluating models of access to such information that may be obtained from data to be provided by the official websites from legislative, in levels federal, state and municipal. It is proposed in this paper to analyze the process of collecting and using of data about votes of senators in order to promote the use of this model in other spheres. From analyzed data a affinity matrix was developed to identifying the relationship between each of the parliamentary with others, based on the similarities of the decisions taken in all the open votes. It was also analyzed the development of initial visualizations and the extension of the scope of the search through the application of data obtained in all the affinities between parliamentarians and to obtain an average affinity between parties, enabling new dimensions of analysis to the data collected. The preparation of the full matrix of relations of affinity among parliamentarians can provide a new horizon of possibilities for developing new forms of visualization and analysis, increasing the visibility of parliamentary actions with society.

The Information Access law, sanctioned in November 18, 2011, regulates the constitutional right of access to public information by Brazilian citizens. Although this law requires the provision of information of public interest, it does not define how such information should be made available. Ideally, information should be in an open format, allowing its use in an efficient and fast way. In the official sites of the federal government the way information is currently available does not allow its reuse as they are presented in dynamic pages from the selection parameters and filters. The objective aim of this paper is to present the system called MDDIR Tool, which proposes ways to persist, represent and retrieve digital information resources generated by the Federal Government official sites. Although this system had been designed for a specific purpose, it may be applied to other fields with similar characteristics. The purpose is to facilitate the access to open data, allowing such data to be consolidated and organized , generating new knowledge and information easy to be interpreted by the general population.
