The permeability coefficients of a series of copolymers of vinylidene chloride (VDC) with methyl acrylate (MA), butyl acrylate (BA) or vinyl chloride (VC) (as comonomer) to oxygen and carbon dioxide have been measured at 1.0 MPa and 30 degrees C, while those to water vapor have been measured at 30 degrees C and 100% relative humidity. All the copolymers are semicrystalline. VDC/MA copolymers have lower melting temperature compared with VDC/BA copolymers, while that melting temperature of VDC/VC copolymer is higher than that of VDC/acrylate copolymers with the same VDC content. The barrier property of the copolymers is predominantly controlled by crystallite, free volume fraction, and cohesive energy. The permeability coefficients of VDC/MA copolymers to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor were successfully correlated with the ratio of free volume to cohesive energy.

The correlation between mechanical relaxation and ionic conductivity was investigated in a two-component epoxy network-LiClO4 electrolyte system. The network was composed of diglycidyl ether of polyethylene glycol (DGEPEG) and triglycidyl ether of glycerol (TGEG). The effects of salt concentration, molecular weight of PEG in DGEPEG and the proportion of DGEPEG (1000) in DGEPEG/TGEG ratio on the ionic conductivity and the mechanical relaxation of the system were studied. It was found that, among the three influential factors, the former reinforces the network chains, reduces the free volume fraction and thus increases the relaxation time of the segmental motion, which in turn lowers the ionic conductivity of the specimen. Conversely, the latter two increase the free volume and thus the chain flexibility, showing an opposite effect. From the iso-free-volume plot of the shift factor log at and reduced ionic conductivity, it is noted that the plot can be used to examine the temperature dependence of segmental mobility and seems to be useful to judge whether the incorporated salt has been dissociated completely. Besides, the ionic conductivity and relaxation time at constant reference temperature are linearly correlated with each other in all the three cases. This result gives an additional experimental confirmation of the coordinated motion model of the ionic hopping with the moving polymer chain segment, which is generally used to explain the ionic conduction in non-glassy amorphous polymer electrolytes.

The effective dielectric responses of linear composites with graded cylindrical particles are investigated under an external uniform electric field. As an example, with the Kummer function, we have obtained the analytical solutions of electric potentials of graded composites with a cylindrical inclusion particle of dielectric function profile epsilon(i) = cr(k)e(betar), where r is the inside distance of a point in cylindrical particle from the original point of cylindrical coordinates. In the dilute limit, the effective dielectric response is derived by means of the mean field method. For larger volume fraction, we have estimated the dielectric response of the graded composites with an effective medium approximation. Furthermore, from our results, we have discussed the effective responses of graded composites for power-law and exponential dielectric function profiles, respectively. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The perturbation method is developed to investigate the effective nonlinear dielectric response of Kerr composites when the external ac and dc electric field is applied. Under the external ac and dc electric field E-app=E-a(1+sin omegat), the effective coupling nonlinear response can be induced by the cubic nonlinearity of Kerr nonlinear materials at the zero frequency, the finite basic frequency omega, the second and the third harmonics, 2omega and 3omega, and so on. As an example, we have investigated the cylindrical inclusions randomly embedded in a host and derived the formulas of the effective nonlinear dielectric response at harmonics in dilute limit. For a higher concentration of inclusions, we have proposed a nonlinear effective-medium approximation by introducing the general effective nonlinear response. With the relationships between the effective nonlinear response at harmonics and the general effective nonlinear response, we have derived a set of formulas of the effective nonlinear dielectric responses at harmonics for a larger volume fraction. The effective dielectric response of linear composites containing graded material is investigated under an applied electric field Eo. For the cylindrical inclusion with gradient dielectric function, epsilon(i)(r) = b + cr, randomly embedded in a host with dielectric constant epsilon(m), we have obtained the exact solution of local electric potential of the composite media regions, which obeys a linear constitutive relation D = epsilonE, using hypergeometric function. In dilute limit, we have derived the effective dielectric response of the linear composite media. Furthermore, for larger volume fraction, the formulas of effective dielectric response of the graded composite media, are given.

Effective dielectric responses of graded cylindrical composites are investigated when an external uniform field is applied to the composites. Considering linear random composites of cylindrical particles with a specific dielectric function, which varies along the radial direction of the particles, we have studied three cases of dielectric profiles: exponential function, linear and power-law profiles. For each case, the effective dielectric response of graded composites is given on the basis of exact solutions of the local potentials of composites in the dilute limit. For a larger volume fraction, we have proposed an effective medium approximation to estimate the effective dielectric response.

The effective dielectric response of composites containing graded material is investigated when an external uniform electric field E-0 is applied to it. For a spherical particle with gradient dielectric constant, epsilon(i) (r) = b + cr, randomly embedded in a host with dielectric constant epsilon(m), we have obtained the exact solution of local electric potential in the composite media regions, which obey a linear constitutive relation D = epsilonE, using hypergeometric function. In dilute limit, the effective dielectric response of the linear graded composite media is derived. Furthermore, for larger volume fraction, we have given an effective medium approximation to estimate the effective dielectric response of the graded composite media. The fifth-order effective nonlinear responses at fundament frequency and higher-order harmonics are given for nonlinear composites, which obey a current-field relation of the form J = sigmaE + x\E\(2) E, if a sinusoidal alternating current (AC) external field with finite frequency omega is applied. As two examples, we have investigated the cylinder and spherical inclusion embedded in a host and, for larger volume fraction, also derived the formulae of effective nonlinear responses at higher-order harmonics by the aid of the general effective response definition. Furthermore, the relationships between effective nonlinear responses at harmonics are given. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A general effective response is proposed for nonlinear composite media, which obey a current field relation of the form J = sigmaE + chi\E\(2) E when an external alternating current (AC) electrical field is applied. For a sinusoidal applied field with finite frequency omega, the effective constitutive relation between the current density and electric field can be defined as,

A graded piezoelectric composite consisting of a spherically anisotropic graded piezoelectric inclusion imbedded in an infinite nonpiezoelectric matrix, with the physical properties of the graded spherical inclusion having a power-law profile with respect to the radial variable r, is studied theoretically. Under an external uniform electric field, the electric displacement field and the elastic stress tensor field of this spherically anisotropic graded piezoelectric composite are derived exactly by means of displacement separation technique, based on the governing equations in the dilute limit. A piezoelectric response mechanism, in which the effective piezoelectric response vanishes along the z direction (or x,y directions), is revealed in this kind of graded piezoelectric composites. Furthermore, it is found that the effective dielectric constant decreases (or increases) with the volume fraction p of the inclusions if the exponent parameter k of the grading profile is larger (or smaller) than a critical value. In the biological sciences, stereological techniques are frequently used to infer changes in structural parameters (volume fraction, for example) between samples from different populations or subject to differing treatment regimes. Non-homogeneity of these parameters is virtually guaranteed, both between experimental animals and within the organ under consideration. A two-stage strategy is then desirable, the first stage involving unbiased estimation of the required parameter, separately for each experimental unit, the latter being defined as a subset of the organ for which homogeneity can reasonably be assumed. In the second stage, these point estimates are used as data inputs to a hierarchical analysis of variance, to distinguish treatment effects from variability between animals, for example. Techniques are therefore required for unbiased estimation of parameters from potentially small numbers of sample profiles. This paper derives unbiased estimates of linear properties in one special case—the sampling of spherical particles by transmission microscopy, when the section thickness is not negligible and the resulting circular profiles are subject to lower truncation. The derivation uses the general integral equation formulation of Nicholson (1970); the resulting formulae are simplified, algebraically, and their efficient computation discussed. Bias arising from variability in slice thickness is shown to be negligible in typical cases. The strategy is illustrated for data examining the effects, on the secondary lysosomes in the digestive cells, of exposure of the common mussel to hydrocarbons. Prolonged exposure, at 30 μg 1−1 total oil-derived hydrocarbons, is seen to increase the average volume of a lysosome, and the volume fraction that lysosomes occupy, but to reduce their number.

We invoke the onset of dislocations along the BaTiO3-SrTiO3 interface as reported by Wunderlich et al. to explain the non-monotonic behaviour of the dielectric permittivity as a function of superlattice periodicity and the less than four-fold in-plane symmetry at the dielectric maximum. At a periodicity of about 10/10, depending on composition and growth mechanism, several groups report a maximum of dielectric permittivity. In addition to that we observe in-plane symmetry less than tetragonal for 10/10 superlattices by HR-XRD, in contrast to initial low-resolution data from Tabata et al. thus challenging the assumption of unrelaxed strain all the way through the superlattice. The aim of this article is to link both effects to the increasing volume fraction of conducting layers close to the interface in series with the superlattice layers.

An analytical modeling approach for the prediction of the geometric characteristics of five-dimensional (5D) woven composites has been formulated. The model is driven by readily available data including the weaving parameters and constituent material properties. The new model calculates the individual proportions of fiber in each direction, areal density, overall fiber volume fraction, and laminate thickness. This information is useful for the engineer in the design and manufacture of 5D woven composites. In addition the present model outputs the mathematical definition of the 5D woven composite unit cell, which could be implemented as the geometric input for a downstream analytical model that is capable of predicting the elastic stiffness of 5D woven composites. Input parameters have been sourced from existing published work and the subsequent predictions made by the model are compared with the available experimental data on 5D woven composites.

The phase behavior of a model system of colloidal platelets and nonadsorbing polymers is studied using computer simulations and perturbation theory. The equation of state for the pure platelet reference system is obtained by Monte Carlo simulations, and the free volume fraction accessible to polymers is measured by a trial insertion method. The free volume fraction is also calculated using scaled particle theory. Subsequently, the phase diagram for platelet-polymer mixtures is calculated. For a platelet aspect ratio L/D=0.1 and a polymer to platelet size ratio d/D>0.2, we observe coexistence between two isotropic phases with different densities. For smaller polymers d/D
