Purpose/Objective: The purpose of this work was to determine biologically equivalent alternative regimens for the treatment of prostate cancer using External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT) and Low Dose-Rate Brachytherapy (LDRBT) with 125I implants and to evaluate the sensitivity of these regimens to different sets of radiobiological parameters of the Linear-Quadratic (LQ) model.

Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) is a technique introduced to shape more precisely the dose distributions to the tumour, providing a higher dose escalation in the volume to irradiate and simultaneously decreasing the dose in the organs at risk which consequently reduces the treatment toxicity. This technique is widely used in prostate and head and neck (H&N) tumours. Given the complexity and the use of high doses in this technique it’s necessary to ensure as a safe and secure administration of the treatment, through the use of quality control programmes for IMRT. The purpose of this study was to evaluate statistically the quality control measurements that are made for the IMRT plans in prostate and H&N patients, before the beginning of the treatment, analysing their variations, the percentage of rejected and repeated measurements, the average, standard deviations and the proportion relations.

This paper presents solutions for fault detection and diagnosis of two-level, three phase voltage-source inverter (VSI) topologies with IGBT devices. The proposed solutions combine redundant standby VSI structures and contactors (or relays) to improve the fault-tolerant capabilities of power electronics in applications with safety requirements. The suitable combination of these elements gives the inverter the ability to maintain energy processing in the occurrence of several failure modes, including short-circuit in IGBT devices, thus extending its reliability and availability. A survey of previously developed fault-tolerant VSI structures and several aspects of failure modes, detection and isolation mechanisms within VSI is first discussed. Hardware solutions for the protection of power semiconductors with fault detection and diagnosis mechanisms are then proposed to provide conditions to isolate and replace damaged power devices (or branches) in real time. Experimental results from a prototype are included to validate the proposed solutions.

A comparative study concerning the robustness of a novel, Fixed Point Transformations/Singular Value Decomposition (FPT/SVD)-based adaptive controller and the Slotine-Li (S&L) approach is given by numerical simulations using a three degree of freedom paradigm of typical Classical Mechanical systems, the cart + double pendulum. The effects of the imprecision of the available dynamical model, presence of dynamic friction at the axles of the drives, and the existence of external disturbance forces unknown and not modeled by the controller are considered. While the Slotine-Li approach tries to identify the parameters of the formally precise, available analytical model of the controlled system with the implicit assumption that the generalized forces are precisely known, the novel one makes do with a very rough, affine form and a formally more precise approximate model of that system, and uses temporal observations of its desired vs. realized responses. Furthermore, it does not assume the lack of unknown perturbations caused either by internal friction and/or external disturbances. Its another advantage is that it needs the execution of the SVD as a relatively time-consuming operation on a grid of a rough system-model only one time, before the commencement of the control cycle within which it works only with simple computations. The simulation examples exemplify the superiority of the FPT/SVD-based control that otherwise has the deficiency that it can get out of the region of its convergence. Therefore its design and use needs preliminary simulation investigations. However, the simulations also exemplify that its convergence can be guaranteed for various practical purposes.

This paper proposes an implementation, based on a multi-agent system, of a management system for automated negotiation of electricity allocation for charging electric vehicles (EVs) and simulates its performance. The widespread existence of charging infrastructures capable of autonomous operation is recognised as a major driver towards the mass adoption of EVs by mobility consumers. Eventually, conflicting requirements from both power grid and EV owners require automated middleman aggregator agents to intermediate all operations, for example, bidding and negotiation, between these parts. Multi-agent systems are designed to provide distributed, modular, coordinated and collaborative management systems; therefore, they seem suitable to address the management of such complex charging infrastructures. Our solution consists in the implementation of virtual agents to be integrated into the management software of a charging infrastructure. We start by modelling the multi-agent architecture using a federated, hierarchical layers setup and as well as the agents' behaviours and interactions. Each of these layers comprises several components, for example, data bases, decision-making and auction mechanisms. The implementation of multi-agent platform and auctions rules, and of models for battery dynamics, is also addressed. Four scenarios were predefined to assess the management system performance under real usage conditions, considering different types of profiles for EVs owners', different infrastructure configurations and usage and different loads on the utility grid (where real data from the concession holder of the Portuguese electricity transmission grid is used). Simulations carried with the four scenarios validate the performance of the modelled system while complying with all the requirements. Although all of these have been performed for one charging station alone, a multi-agent design may in the future be used for the higher level problem of distributing energy among charging stations. Os parques de estacionamento cobertos estão obrigados por legislação a terem sistemas de desenfumagem. Assim, nesta dissertação desenvolve-se um procedimento computacional para a analise e verificação de funcionamento de sistemas de desenfumagem com ventiladores de impulso para parques de estacionamento, recorrendo ao software de mecânica dos fluidos computacional OpenFOAM. Actualmente nos sistemas de desenfumagem de parques de estacionamento estão a ser aplicados ventiladores de impulso. Este tipo de ventiladores não estão contemplados pela legislação em vigor. Assim, para serem utilizados é necessário verificar se estes podem substituir as redes de condutas. A verificação do funcionamento de sistemas de desenfumagem com ventiladores de impulso e efectuada com recurso a programas de simulação de mecânica dos fluidos computacional. O software OpenFOAM não tem tutoriais para ventiladores de impulso. Assim, foi executado um procedimento para validação dos ventiladores de impulso. A validação consistiu em reproduzir-se uma experiência executada por Giesen et al. (2011). Executaram-se várias simulações com diferentes modelos de turbulência, verificando-se que o programa buoyantpimplefoam do software OpenFOAM ao utilizar o modelo de turbulência k -ɛ simulou quase na perfeição os ventiladores de impulso. O desenvolvimento do procedimento computacional foi executado para um parque de estacionamento com uma geometria bastante complexa. O parque de estacionamento foi criado com um software em 3D e posteriormente inserido numa malha j a criada com as dimensões exteriores do parque. Foram estipuladas as condições de fronteira e executou-se uma simulação de seiscentos segundos com parâmetros determinados previamente. O processamento da simulação teve a duração de aproximadamente oito dias. Dos resultados obtidos concluiu-se que o procedimento computacional apresentado simula adequadamente sistemas de desenfumagem em parques de estacionamento.

Postural control deficits are the most disabling aspects of Parkinson's disease (PD), resulting in decreased mobility and functional independence. The aim of this study was to assess the postural control stability, revealed by variables based on the centre of pressure (CoP), in individuals with PD while performing a sit-to-stand-to-sit sequence under single- and dual-task conditions. An observational, analytical and cross-sectional study was performed. The sample consisted of 9 individuals with PD and 9 healthy controls. A force platform was used to measure the CoP displacement and velocity during the sit-to-stand-to-sit sequence. The results were statistically analysed. Individuals with PD required greater durations for the sit-to-stand-to-sit sequence than the controls (p < 0.05). The anteroposterior and mediolateral CoP displacement were higher in the individuals with PD (p < 0.05). However, only the anteroposterior CoP velocity in the stand-to-sit phase (p = 0.006) was lower in the same individuals. Comparing the single- and dual-task conditions in both groups, the duration, the anteroposterior CoP displacement and velocity were higher in the dual-task condition (p < 0.05). The individuals with PD presented reduced postural control stability during the sit-to-stand-to-sit sequence, especially when under the dual-task condition. These individuals have deficits not only in motor performance, but also in cognitive performance when performing the sit-to-stand-to-sit sequence in their daily life tasks. Moreover, both deficits tend to be intensified when two tasks are performed simultaneously.

O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em projetar, construir e testar um protótipo em laboratório de uma fonte de alimentação de alta tensão que permita descargas elétricas {estáveis e de dimensões reduzidas}, de modo a que possa ser utilizada, dada a sua essencialidade, na fabricação de redes de período longo (LPG) em fibra ótica nos chamados turning points. Estes são pontos de elevada sensibilidade, fundamentais no desenvolvimento tecnológico de sensores em fibra ótica, em particular, de sensores refractométricos. O protótipo da fonte de alimentação é composto por um regulador do tipo BUCK, um inversor para alimentação do transformador de alta tensão, o circuito de realimentação e controlo PWM e um microcontrolador para o comando da fonte. Posteriormente procedeu-se à otimização dos parâmetros de descarga, o que conduziu a fabricação de redes de período longo com períodos inferiores a 150 micrómetros. Este é um resultado sem paralelo a nível internacional no que concerne ao uso da técnica do arco elétrico.

O mercado de smartphones tem vindo a crescer massivamente nos últimos anos, bem como a diversi cação das suas funcionalidades no dia-a-dia de cada pessoa. O mercado aberto de aplicações para estes equipamentos também tem sofrido uma forte evolução o que permite uma maior qualidade e competitividade pela apresentação de produtos. O conceito de casas inteligentes está cada vez mais presente e é algo que as pessoas se estão a acomodar de forma gradual. Para acompanhar tal feito, é necessário desenvolver as capacidades dos equipamentos que estas pessoas mais usam para que estes possam dar resposta a estas necessidades. Para o caso atual irão ser estudadas as fechaduras inteligentes. Os sistemas comercializados atualmente, são tipicamente sistemas proprietários e apresentam algumas limitações ou faltas (ex: ao nível da segurança, incapacidade de abranger um largo número de dispositivos móveis ou mesmo ao nível do preço). Neste contexto, e com base na caracterização das soluções de controlo de acesso atuais, foi estudada a viabilidade de, usando uma abordagem assente em tecnologias não proprietárias (i.e., abertas), desenvolver soluções de controlo de acesso com características comparáveis com os sistemas proprietários actuais e, eventualmente, ultrapassando os limites e falhas identi cados. Dadas estas premissas o sistema de controlo de acesso móvel pensado envolve um computador BeagleBone Black e a tecnologia sem os Bluetooth. Este sistema permite a fácil integração do computador com qualquer smartphone atual e é dotado de fortes características de segurança e privacidade. O sistema foi concebido inicialmente para ser implementado em fechaduras de portas mas com possibilidade de expansão para outros equipamentos. Além disso, o sistema permitirá também o acesso a terceiros após a devida autorização do dono.

Manipulator systems are rather complex and highly nonlinear which makes difficult their analysis and control. Classic system theory is veil known, however it is inadequate in the presence of strong nonlinear dynamics. Nonlinear controllers produce good results [1] and work has been done e. g. relating the manipulator nonlinear dynamics with frequency response [2–5]. Nevertheless, given the complexity of the problem, systematic methods which permit to draw conclusions about stability, imperfect modelling effects, compensation requirements, etc. are still lacking. In section 2 we start by analysing the variation of the poles and zeros of the descriptive transfer functions of a robot manipulator in order to motivate the development of more robust (and computationally efficient) control algorithms. Based on this analysis a new multirate controller which is an improvement of the well known “computed torque controller” [6] is announced in section 3. Some research in this area was done by Neuman [7,8] showing tbat better robustness is possible if the basic controller structure is modified. The present study stems from those ideas, and attempts to give a systematic treatment, which results in easy to use standard engineering tools. Finally, in section 4 conclusions are presented.

The action of fenthion was studied in a 15% epicutaneous formulation upon Rhipicephalus sanguineus, which may transmit pathogens to men and other animals, such as Ehrlichia, Babesia and Ricketsia. Dogs were artificially infected for the trial. The fenthion bioassays were begun four months after artificial infestation. The test group, having a mean of 186 ticks per dog, received the formulation dosage according to body weight on the neck region. Tick counts were performed, considering diameters > or = 2mm, during 11 days of treatment, in the most affected body areas: back, ears and paws. Before the application of fenthion in the dogs, it were observed an average 43.3% ticks in the ears, 38.1% in the back area and 17.6% in the paws. The number of ticks in dogs decreased by 36.2%, 63.8%, 82.7%, 67%, 40% and 4.9%, respectively on days 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 after treatment. R. sanguineus anti-tick activity, lower than that officially recommended, was verified. The number of ticks increased progressively after the 5th day, demonstrating residual insecticide inefficacy. The results obtained did not indicate the use of this formulation, at the tested dosage, as an elective measure for R. sanguineus control.
