An equation is applied for calculating the expected persistence time of an unstructured population of the white-toothed shrew Crocidura russula from Preverenges, a suburban area in western Switzerland. Population abundance data from March and November between 1977 and 1988 were fit to the logistic density dependence model to estimate mean population growth rate as a function of population density. The variance in mean growth rate was approximated with two different models. The largest estimated persistence time was less than a few decades, the smallest less than 10 years. The results are sensitive to the magnitude of variance in population growth rate. Deviations from the logistic density dependence model in November are quite well explained by weather variables but those in March are uncorrelated with weather variables. Variability in population growth rates measured in winter months may be better explained by behavioural mechanisms. Environmental variability, dispersal of juveniles and refugia within the range of the population may contribute to its long-term survival.

1. Sex differences in levels of parasite infection are a common rule in a wide range of mammals, with males usually more susceptible than females. Sex-specific exposure to parasites, e.g. mediated through distinct modes of social aggregation between and within genders, as well as negative relationships between androgen levels and immune defences are thought to play a major role in this pattern. 2. Reproductive female bats live in close association within clusters at maternity roosts, whereas nonbreeding females and males generally occupy solitary roosts. Bats represent therefore an ideal model to study the consequences of sex-specific social and spatial aggregation on parasites' infection strategies. 3. We first compared prevalence and parasite intensities in a host-parasite system comprising closely related species of ectoparasitic mites (Spinturnix spp.) and their hosts, five European bat species. We then compared the level of parasitism between juvenile males and females in mixed colonies of greater and lesser mouse-eared bats Myotis myotis and M. blythii. Prevalence was higher in adult females than in adult males stemming from colonial aggregations in all five studied species. Parasite intensity was significantly higher in females in three of the five species studied. No difference in prevalence and mite numbers was found between male and female juveniles in colonial roosts. 4. To assess whether observed sex-biased parasitism results from differences in host exposure only, or, alternatively, from an active, selected choice made by the parasite, we performed lab experiments on short-term preferences and long-term survival of parasites on male and female Myotis daubentoni. When confronted with adult males and females, parasites preferentially selected female hosts, whereas no choice differences were observed between adult females and subadult males. Finally, we found significantly higher parasite survival on adult females compared with adult males. 5. Our study shows that social and spatial aggregation favours sex-biased parasitism that could be a mere consequence of an active and adaptive parasite choice for the more profitable host.

The terminal segment of the intermediate hair in the semi-aquatic Chirmarrogale hantu and Bectigale elegans is investigated with a view to a taxonomic interpretation. Nectogale is characterized by especially fine hairs which strongly contrast with the distally thickened hairs of Chimarrogale. In spite of these differences, the hairs of both genera are characterized by a H-shaped profile. According to Vogel & Köpchen (1977), this criterion confirms the discussed membership to the Soricinae.

A total of 357 house mice (Mus domesticus) from 83 localities uniformly distributed throughout Switzerland were screened for the presence of a homogenously staining region (HSR) on chromosome 1. Altogether 47 mice from 11 localities were HSR/+ or HSR/HSR. One sample of 11 individuals all had an HSR/HSR karyotype. Almost all mice with the variant were collected from the Rhone valley (HSR frequency: 61%) and Val Bregaglia (HSR frequency: 81%). For samples from most of the area of Switzerland, the HSR was absent. There was no strong association between the geographic distribution of the HSR and the areas of occurrence of metacentrics. However, at Chiggiogna the HSR was found on Rb (1.3). Possible explanations for the HSR polymorphism are discussed.

Some introduced ant populations have an extraordinary social organization, called unicoloniality, whereby individuals mix freely within large supercolonies. We investigated whether this mode of social organization also exists in native populations of the Argentine ant Linepithema humile. Behavioral analyses revealed the presence of 11 supercolonies (width 1 to 515 m) over a 3-km transect. As in the introduced range, there was always strong aggression between but never within supercolonies. The genetic data were in perfect agreement with the behavioral tests, all nests being assigned to identical supercolonies with the different methods. There was strong genetic differentiation between supercolonies but no genetic differentiation among nests within supercolonies. We never found more than a single mitochondrial haplotype per supercolony, further supporting the view that supercolonies are closed breeding units. Genetic and chemical distances between supercolonies were positively correlated, but there were no other significant associations between geographic, genetic, chemical, and behavioral distances. A comparison of supercolonies sampled in 1999 and 2005 revealed a very high turnover, with about one-third of the supercolonies being replaced yearly. This dynamic is likely to involve strong competition between supercolonies and thus act as a potent selective force maintaining unicoloniality over evolutionary time.

Chromosomes analysis of 28 shrews belonging to the genus Crocidura from West Africa allowed the detection of five new karyotypes: C. wimmeri (2n = 50, NF = 84), C. cf. gracilipes (56/86), C. cf. nimbae (46/68), and C. cf. planiceps (44/72). Among the individuals identified morphologically as C. poensis (52/70) a distinct species was recognized on the basis of its chromosome complement, C. nigeriae (50/76). The karyotype of C. occidentalis was confirmed with the study of another subspecies, C. occidentalis manni (50/66). An identical chromosome set characterizes C. odorata giffardi and provides evidence for its relationship with C. occidentalis.

Is the extremely high oxygen consumption of shrews due to an unusually high basal metabolism? In an attempt to answer this long-standing question, we have measured the oxygen consumption of 13 species of shrews of different origin: from Europe - Sorex araneus, S. Minutus, Neomys fodiens, Crocidura russula, and Suncus etruscus; from Africa - Crocidura bottegi, C. bicolor, C. jouvenetae; C. poensis, C. theresae, C. Wimmeri, C. flavescens, and C. giffardi, The measurements, taken over a period of 20-30 minutes, were made in small, closed-system chambers at 25°C. The metabolic rat our shrews of the subfamily Soricinae lies between the eman and minimum values of the Soricini (M=126.2 W0.52 cal/h and M=82.6 W0.53 cal/h, respectively), as recorded in the literature. Zhe average for the African Crocidurinae is much lower (M= 43.6 W0.67). The metabolic rate of the European Croccidura russula agrees with that of the African species. Thus, the Crocidurinae are characterized by a relatively low metabolic rate; the Soricinae, and in particular the tribe of the Soricini, by an extremely high metabolic rate. The tribes Neomyini and Blarinini occupy an intermediate position. These differences are also to be found at the level of the basal metabolism. This main difference between the two sub-families can most likely be explained by evolution in geographical isolation under differential climatic conditions: the Crocidurinae having evolved in tropical Africa and the Soricinae in temperate Eurasia

With 420 trap-nights we sampled shrews in different habitats of the Souss-Massa National Park. Crocidura viaria (n=11) was found in 5 habitats (cultivated land, wetland, beach dunes with Chenopodia, sand dunes with patchy vegetation and also in the Euphorbia association). No shrews were captured in Eucalyptus forest with undergrowth. Southward from Essaouira, C. viaria is obviously the most frequent species in dense or patchy lowland vegetation. Two other species (C. whitakeri and C. tarfayaensis) which occur in sympatry in the Agadir region were not captured. They live probably not in syntopy with C. viaria and their ecological requirements remain to be studied.

With an approach, based on chromosomal, biochemical and morphological analysis, we show that the animals wich are classically attributed to C. r. gueldenstaedti and/or to C. r. monacha belong in fact to the taxon C. suaveolens. The oriental forms, formely seen as C. russula, are of the same karyotype as C. suaveolens and are biochemically close to C. suaveolens in Central Europe. The origin of the taxonomical confusion might stem from the large morphological variation in and between populations of C. suaveolens in the Near East. Based on our results C. russula monacha Thomas, 1906 belongs to the polymorphic species C. suaveolens Pallas, 1811 and we propose to consider C. (russula) gueldenstaedti Pallas, 1881 as "incertae sedis".

BACKGROUND: "Virtual" autopsy by postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) can replace medical autopsy to a certain extent but has limitations for cardiovascular diseases. These limitations might be overcome by adding multiphase PMCT angiography. OBJECTIVE: To compare virtual autopsy by multiphase PMCT angiography with medical autopsy. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01541995) SETTING: Single-center study at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Hamburg, Germany, between 1 April 2012 and 31 March 2013. PATIENTS: Hospitalized patients who died unexpectedly or within 48 hours of an event necessitating cardiopulmonary resuscitation. MEASUREMENTS: Diagnoses from clinical records were compared with findings from both types of autopsy. New diagnoses identified by autopsy were classified as major or minor, depending on whether they would have altered clinical management. RESULTS: Of 143 eligible patients, 50 (35%) had virtual and medical autopsy. Virtual autopsy confirmed 93% of all 336 diagnoses identified from antemortem medical records, and medical autopsy confirmed 80%. In addition, virtual and medical autopsy identified 16 new major and 238 new minor diagnoses. Seventy-three of the virtual autopsy diagnoses, including 32 cases of coronary artery stenosis, were identified solely by multiphase PMCT angiography. Of the 114 clinical diagnoses classified as cardiovascular, 110 were confirmed by virtual autopsy and 107 by medical autopsy. In 11 cases, multiphase PMCT angiography showed "unspecific filling defects," which were not reported by medical autopsy. LIMITATION: These results come from a single center with concerted interest and expertise in postmortem imaging; further studies are thus needed for generalization. CONCLUSION: In cases of unexpected death, the addition of multiphase PMCT angiography increases the value of virtual autopsy, making it a feasible alternative for quality control and identification of diagnoses traditionally made by medical autopsy. The population structure of Staphylococcus aureus is generally described as highly clonal and is consequently subdivided into several clonal complexes (CCs). Recent data suggested that recombination might occur more frequently within than among CCs. To test this hypothesis as well as to understand how genetic diversity is created in S. aureus, we analyzed a collection of 182 isolates with MLST and five highly variable core adhesion (ADH) genes. As expected the polymorphism of ADH genes was higher than MLST genes. However both categories of genes showed low within CCs diversity with a dominant haplotype and its single nucleotide variants. Several recombination events were detected but none involved intra-CC recombination. This did not confirm the hypothesis of higher recombination within CCs. Nevertheless, molecular analyses of variance indicated that these few recombination events have a significant impact on the genetic diversity within CCs. In addition, although most ADH genes were under purifying selection, signs of positive selection associated with a recombinant group were detected. These data highlight the importance of recombination on the evolution of the highly clonal S. aureus and suggest that recombination when combined with demographic mechanisms as well as selection might favor the rapid creation of new clonal complexes.

Studied was the activity of the shrew Crocidura russula in the field (by radioactive tracking) and in laboratory (by continuous recording of nest temperature and by video). Under natural conditions, the total daily activity remained nearly constant throughout the year accounting for about 33 % of the total time. Activity was polyphasic and showed a daily rhythm; on an average, one activity phases occured every two hours and lasted 36 min. The activity periods of captive shrews were generally shorter, but always more frequent, and the total daily activity of captive shrews was much lower in winter. Two experiments carried out in the filed on shrews artificially fed, demonstrated that under natural conditions, foraging takes a major part of the winter activity. The activity patterns of Crocidura russula are compared with those of another European shrew, Sorex araneus.

Biodistribution and tumor uptake of a chimeric human-mouse monoclonal antibody (MAb) and the original mouse MAb have been comparatively studied. METHODS: Eighteen patients with suspected colorectal cancer scheduled for surgery underwent immunoscintigraphy with 123I-labeled chimeric anti-CEA MAb. Iodine-125 and 131I trace-labeled chimeric and original mouse MAb were simultaneously injected for biodistribution studies. RESULTS: Similar serum kinetics and a low immunogenicity were observed for both antibodies. Mean binding capacity to CEA measured in PBS after radiolabeling was identical for both MAbs and it was slightly decreased when measured in serum 1-4 hr after injection. Radiochromatograms of patients sera showed immune complex formation related to the amount of circulating CEA. Postoperative ex vivo radioactivity counting in tissue samples revealed similar antibody distributions with notably similar antibody uptakes in tumors. High tumor uptakes (between 0.02 to 0.06% injected dose per g) were observed in 3 of 13 patients operated for primary or metastatic colorectal cancer. CONCLUSION: In this dual-label technique, the radioiodinated anti-CEA IgG4 chimeric MAb and the original mouse IgG1 MAb were shown to have very similar behavior in colorectal cancer patients.
