The need for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a Brazilian reality in the worlds agricultural, once they have models penetrating the market with agrictural purpose. After processing, the images collected by a UAV can generate a mosaic of the study area. For making and georeferencing the mosaic, can be deployed or not ground control points. Thus, the study aimed to compare a mosaic with ground control points and without ground control points generated from images collected by a UAV used primarily for agricultural purposes. The results showed that the quality in the determination of areas and perimeters no presented significant difference with or without the use of ground control points. The mosaic generated without ground control points obtained an average error of 23.7% of the pixel size; with ground control points, the average error was 10.6%, providing an improvement of approximately 50%. Planimetric and altimetric errors, with respect to the ground control points, for the controlled mosaic, reached the order of decimeters, with planimetric accuracy of 12.8 cm, a result considered satisfactory taking into account mainly the purpose of assessed UAV

The numeric simulation is an important tool applied in understanding the dynamics of groundwater flow. In a hydrogeological model the processes responsible for groundwater flow are described by numerical formulations that allow the simplification, representation and understanding of the dynamics of the Aquifer System. In this work, a steady state groundwater flow simulation of Urucuia Aquifer System (UAS) part of the Corrente river basin was conducted, using the finite element method through software FEFLOW, to understand the dynamics of groundwater flow and quantify the hydrologic balance. The aquifer system Urucuia lodges in the São Francisco hydrogeological province and corresponds to a set of interconnected aquifers that occur in rocks from Urucuia group in the Urucuia sub-basin described by Campos e Dardenne (1997). The system is a porous media one, in a shape of a thick table mountain, consisting essentially of sandstones. The Corrente river basin is located in UAS in Western State of Bahia and it's one of the main units to maintaining permanent flow (Q95) and average natural flow of the São Francisco river. The simulation performed in this work obtained the following results for the modelled region: horizontal hydraulic conductivity of 3 x 10-4 m/s and vertical one 6 x 10-5 m/s; maximum recharge of 345 mm and minimum of 85 mm/a. It was concluded that: (1) regional groundwater flow has eastbound; with an exception of the extreme northeast portion, where the flow has opposite direction; (2) there are smaller water side dividers with an approximate direction EW, that guide the flow of water to the drainage that cut the aquifer; and (3) the UAS at Corrente river basin can be understood as a free regional aquifer system, isotropic and homogeneous. Regionally, the small lithological variations present in the Urucuia group can be neglected and do not exhibit significant influences on the dynamics of ground water flow

Recent progress in microelectronic and wireless communications have enabled the development of low cost, low power, multifunctional sensors, which has allowed the birth of new type of networks named wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The main features of such networks are: the nodes can be positioned randomly over a given field with a high density; each node operates both like sensor (for collection of environmental data) as well as transceiver (for transmission of information to the data retrieval); the nodes have limited energy resources. The use of wireless communications and the small size of nodes, make this type of networks suitable for a large number of applications. For example, sensor nodes can be used to monitor a high risk region, as near a volcano; in a hospital they could be used to monitor physical conditions of patients. For each of these possible application scenarios, it is necessary to guarantee a trade-off between energy consumptions and communication reliability. The thesis investigates the use of WSNs in two possible scenarios and for each of them suggests a solution that permits to solve relating problems considering the trade-off introduced. The first scenario considers a network with a high number of nodes deployed in a given geographical area without detailed planning that have to transmit data toward a coordinator node, named sink, that we assume to be located onboard an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This is a practical example of reachback communication, characterized by the high density of nodes that have to transmit data reliably and efficiently towards a far receiver. It is considered that each node transmits a common shared message directly to the receiver onboard the UAV whenever it receives a broadcast message (triggered for example by the vehicle). We assume that the communication channels between the local nodes and the receiver are subject to fading and noise. The receiver onboard the UAV must be able to fuse the weak and noisy signals in a coherent way to receive the data reliably. It is proposed a cooperative diversity concept as an effective solution to the reachback problem. In particular, it is considered a spread spectrum (SS) transmission scheme in conjunction with a fusion center that can exploit cooperative diversity, without requiring stringent synchronization between nodes. The idea consists of simultaneous transmission of the common message among the nodes and a Rake reception at the fusion center. The proposed solution is mainly motivated by two goals: the necessity to have simple nodes (to this aim we move the computational complexity to the receiver onboard the UAV), and the importance to guarantee high levels of energy efficiency of the network, thus increasing the network lifetime. The proposed scheme is analyzed in order to better understand the effectiveness of the approach presented. The performance metrics considered are both the theoretical limit on the maximum amount of data that can be collected by the receiver, as well as the error probability with a given modulation scheme. Since we deal with a WSN, both of these performance are evaluated taking into consideration the energy efficiency of the network. The second scenario considers the use of a chain network for the detection of fires by using nodes that have a double function of sensors and routers. The first one is relative to the monitoring of a temperature parameter that allows to take a local binary decision of target (fire) absent/present. The second one considers that each node receives a decision made by the previous node of the chain, compares this with that deriving by the observation of the phenomenon, and transmits the final result to the next node. The chain ends at the sink node that transmits the received decision to the user. In this network the goals are to limit throughput in each sensor-to-sensor link and minimize probability of error at the last stage of the chain. This is a typical scenario of distributed detection. To obtain good performance it is necessary to define some fusion rules for each node to summarize local observations and decisions of the previous nodes, to get a final decision that it is transmitted to the next node. WSNs have been studied also under a practical point of view, describing both the main characteristics of IEEE802:15:4 standard and two commercial WSN platforms. By using a commercial WSN platform it is realized an agricultural application that has been tested in a six months on-field experimentation.

Negli ultimi anni, complice la rapida evoluzione degli elaboratori e dei sensori, spinta dal mercato smartphone, una tecnologia si sta sviluppando e si sta diffondendo rapidamente. Si tratta di quella relativa agli unmanned vehicles (UV), i veicoli senza pilota, spesso nel linguaggio comune chiamati “droni”. Questi particolari veicoli sono dotati della tecnologia adatta per svolgere in relativa autonomia particolari mansioni, senza la necessità della presenza di un pilota a bordo. In questa Tesi magistrale si descrivono brevemente le diverse categorie di UV e l’attuale livello di autonomia raggiunta nello svolgimento di alcune funzioni, grazie a tecnologie quali i linguaggi ad agenti, di cui si presentano anche alcune significative applicazioni allo stato dell’arte. Per rendere più efficaci eventuali nuove funzionalità, fornendo una metodologia di sviluppo, atta ad aumentare il grado di astrazione, viene proposto un approccio architetturale a tre livelli. In particolare, viene approfondito il secondo livello, presentando l’implementazione di una funzionalità, l’autolocalizzazione spaziale, utile ad un sistema di terzo livello per arricchire la propria conoscenza dell’ambiente, al fine di raggiungere la massima autonomia nel controllo del mezzo. Questa prima esperienza ha consentito di approfondire le necessità in termini di hardware e software, al fine di poter effettuare una scelta mirata per l’ottimizzazione dei risultati ed un eventuale porting on-board, nella prospettiva di svincolare il mezzo da eventuali collegamenti con una stazione di terra, fino ad ora necessaria per eseguire le attività più complesse. Un interessante caso di studio consente di verificare la bontà del modello proposto e i risultati raggiunti nell’autolocalizzazione. In conclusione, si propongono ulteriori sviluppi che potranno fornire gli strumenti necessari alla massima espressione del potenziale che gli UV possiedono.

This thesis deals with the analytic study of dynamics of Multi--Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. It is conceived to give a set of mathematical instruments apt to the theoretical study and design of these flying machines. The entire work is organized in analogy with classical academic texts about airplane flight dynamics. First, the non--linear equations of motion are defined and all the external actions are modeled, with particular attention to rotors aerodynamics. All the equations are provided in a form, and with personal expedients, to be directly exploitable in a simulation environment. This has requited an answer to questions like the trim of such mathematical systems. All the treatment is developed aiming at the description of different multi--rotor configurations. Then, the linearized equations of motion are derived. The computation of the stability and control derivatives of the linear model is carried out. The study of static and dynamic stability characteristics is, thus, addressed, showing the influence of the various geometric and aerodynamic parameters of the machine and in particular of the rotors. All the theoretic results are finally utilized in two interesting cases. One concerns the design of control systems for attitude stabilization. The linear model permits the tuning of linear controllers gains and the non--linear model allows the numerical testing. The other case is the study of the performances of an innovative configuration of quad--rotor aircraft. With the non--linear model the feasibility of maneuvers impossible for a traditional quad--rotor is assessed. The linear model is applied to the controllability analysis of such an aircraft in case of actuator block.

Monitoring the impact of sea storms on coastal areas is fundamental to study beach evolution and the vulnerability of low-lying coasts to erosion and flooding. Modelling wave runup on a beach is possible, but it requires accurate topographic data and model tuning, that can be done comparing observed and modeled runup. In this study we collected aerial photos using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle after two different swells on the same study area. We merged the point cloud obtained with photogrammetry with multibeam data, in order to obtain a complete beach topography. Then, on each set of rectified and georeferenced UAV orthophotos, we identified the maximum wave runup for both events recognizing the wet area left by the waves. We then used our topography and numerical models to simulate the wave runup and compare the model results to observed values during the two events. Our results highlight the potential of the methodology presented, which integrates UAV platforms, photogrammetry and Geographic Information Systems to provide faster and cheaper information on beach topography and geomorphology compared with traditional techniques without losing in accuracy. We use the results obtained from this technique as a topographic base for a model that calculates runup for the two swells. The observed and modeled runups are consistent, and open new directions for future research.

The interest of this study is based on the observation that some manufacturing processes of various vehicles wings, such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), or blades, such as wind turbine blades, or other devices that use aerodynamic profiles, produce imperfections in the leading edge or open trailing edge with bigger thickness than original airfoil, because, for example, they are manufactured in two parts, top surface and bottom surface and subsequently joined. In this last step might appear a sliding between the top surface and the bottom surface having a small step on the leading edge or a small thickness gain can occur on the trailing edge. Normally these imperfections are corrected through a refill and/or sanding processes using many hours of manual labor. Therefore the initial objective of this research is to determine the level of influence in the aerodynamic characteristics at low Reynolds numbers (Lissaman, 1981, Carmichael, 1981, Nagamatsu and Cuche, 1981, Schmitz, 1957, Cebeci, 1989, Mueller and Batill, 1982) of these imperfections in the manufacture, and determine whether there may be a value for which it would not be necessary to correct them

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images a target region reflectivity function in the multi-dimensional spatial domain of range and cross-range with a finer azimuth resolution than the one provided by any on-board real antenna. Conventional SAR techniques assume a single reflection of transmitted waveforms from targets. Nevertheless, new uses of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for civilian-security applications force SAR systems to work in much more complex scenes such as urban environments. Consequently, multiple-bounce returns are additionally superposed to direct-scatter echoes. They are known as ghost images, since they obscure true target image and lead to poor resolution. All this may involve a significant problem in applications related to surveillance and security. In this work, an innovative multipath mitigation technique is presented in which Time Reversal (TR) concept is applied to SAR images when the target is concealed in clutter, leading to TR-SAR technique. This way, the effect of multipath is considerably reduced ?or even removed?, recovering the lost resolution due to multipath propagation. Furthermore, some focusing indicators such as entropy (E), contrast (C) and Rényi entropy (RE) provide us with a good focusing criterion when using TR-SAR.

In this paper, the fusion of probabilistic knowledge-based classification rules and learning automata theory is proposed and as a result we present a set of probabilistic classification rules with self-learning capability. The probabilities of the classification rules change dynamically guided by a supervised reinforcement process aimed at obtaining an optimum classification accuracy. This novel classifier is applied to the automatic recognition of digital images corresponding to visual landmarks for the autonomous navigation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by the authors. The classification accuracy of the proposed classifier and its comparison with well-established pattern recognition methods is finally reported.

El objetivo fundamental de la presente tesis doctoral es el diseño de una arquitectura cognitiva, que pueda ser empleada para la navegación autónoma de vehículos aéreos no tripulados conocidos como UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). Dicha arquitectura cognitiva se apoya en la definición de una librería de comportamientos, que aportarán la inteligencia necesaria al UAV para alcanzar los objetivos establecidos, en base a la información sensorial recopilada del entorno de operación. La navegación autónoma del UAV se apoyará en la utilización de un mapa topológico visual, consistente en la definición de un grafo que engloba mediante nodos los diferentes landmarks ubicados en el entorno, y que le servirán al UAV de guía para alcanzar su objetivo. Los arcos establecidos entre los nodos del mapa topológico, le proporcionarán de la información necesaria para establecer el rumbo más adecuado para alcanzar el siguiente landmark a visitar, siguiendo siempre una secuencia lógica de navegación, basada en la distancia entre un determinado landmark con respecto al objetivo final ó landmark destino. La arquitectura define un mecanismo híbrido de control, el cual puede conmutar entre dos diferentes modos de navegación. El primero es el denominado como Search Mode, el cual se activará cuando el UAV se encuentre en un estado desconocido dentro del entorno, para lo cual hará uso de cálculos basado en la entropía para la búsqueda de posibles landmarks. Se empleará como estrategia novedosa la idea de que la entropía de una imagen tiene una correlación directa con respecto a la probabilidad de que dicha imagen contenga uno ó varios landmarks. De esta forma, la estrategia para la búsqueda de nuevos landmarks en el entorno, se basará en un proceso continuo de maximización de la entropía. Si por el contrario el UAV identifica la existencia de un posible landmark entre los definidos en su mapa topológico, se considerará que está sobre un estado conocido, por lo que se conmutará al segundo modo de navegación denominado como Homing Mode, el cual se encargará de calcular señales de control para la aproximación del UAV al landmark localizado. Éste último modo implementa un control dual basado en dos tipos de controladores (FeedForward/FeedBack) que mediante su combinación, aportarán al UAV señales de control cada vez más óptimas, además de llevar a cabo un entrenamiento continuo y en tiempo real. Para cumplir con los requisitos de ejecución y aprendizaje en tiempo real de la arquitectura, se han tomado como principales referencias dos paradigmas empleados en diferentes estudios dentro del área de la robótica, como son el paradigma de robots de desarrollo (developmental robots) basado en un aprendizaje del robot en tiempo real y de forma adaptativa con su entorno, así como del paradigma de modelos internos (internal models) basado en los resultados obtenidos a partir de estudios neurocientíficos del cerebelo humano; dicho modelo interno sirve de base para la construcción del control dual de la arquitectura. Se presentarán los detalles de diseño e implementación de los diferentes módulos que componen la arquitectura cognitiva híbrida, y posteriormente, los diferentes resultados obtenidos a partir de las pruebas experimentales ejecutadas, empleando como UAV la plataforma robótica aérea de AR.Drone. Como resultado final se ha obtenido una validación completa de la arquitectura cognitiva híbrida objetivo de la tesis, cumplimento con la totalidad de requisitos especificados y garantizando su viabilidad como aplicación operativa en el mundo real. Finalmente, se muestran las distintas conclusiones a las cuales se ha llegado a partir de los resultados experimentales, y se presentan las diferentes líneas de investigación futuras que podrán ser ejecutadas.

El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar la influencia que tiene sobre el comportamiento aerodinámico del perfil el hecho de que este presente un borde de salida más grueso que el perfil original del que se partía. Este estudio se ha centrado fundamentalmente en la influencia sobre su sustentación aerodinámica, resistencia aerodinámica y, especialmente, sobre la eficiencia aerodinámica del perfil, es decir sobre la relación entre la sustentación y la resistencia aerodinámica. También se ha analizado su influencia en otros aspectos aerodinámicos de los perfiles, como la entrada en pérdida, el ángulo de ataque de sustentación máxima, el ángulo de ataque de eficiencia máxima, el coeficiente de momento aerodinámico y la posición del centro aerodinámico. Estas imperfecciones en el borde de salida pueden aparecer en algunos procesos de fabricación de determinados elementos aerodinámicos, como alas de aviones no tripulados o palas de aeroturbina. Este fenómeno no ha sido analizado en profundidad en la literatura científica, aunque si que se ha analizado por varios autores la influencia sobre el perfil con el borde de salida truncado, o perfiles con la parte final regruesada, utilizados en otras aplicaciones. Para la realización de este estudio se han analizado perfiles de distinto tipo, laminares y no laminares, perfiles simétricos y con curvatura, así como perfiles con distinto espesor, a fin de comparar el grado de influencia del fenómeno estudiado sobre cada tipo de perfil para comparar su grado de sensibilidad a dicha anomalía geométrica. El estudio se ha realizado experimentalmente utilizando una cámara de ensayos diseñada específicamente a tal efecto, así como una balanza electrónica para medir las fuerzas y los momentos sobre el perfil, y un escáner de presiones para medir la distribución de presiones en determinados casos. También se ha abordado el estudio del comportamiento de perfiles con borde de salida más grueso que el nominal pero redondeado en vez de romo, con el objeto de analizar la eficacia de redondear el borde de salida, que es uno de los métodos que se puede utilizar para mitigar este efecto. Por otro lado, como el comportamiento de los perfiles aerodinámicos tiene una fuerte dependencia del número de Reynolds, el estudio se ha centrado en el análisis del comportamiento a bajos números de Reynolds debido a su uso reciente en una amplia gama de aplicaciones, desde vehículos aéreos no tripulados (UAV) hasta palas de aeroturbinas de baja potencia, e incluso debido a su uso potencial en aeronaves diseñadas para volar en atmósferas de baja densidad como la que existe en Marte. El interés de este estudio está orientado al establecimiento de criterios para cuantificar la influencia que tiene el hecho de que el borde de salida sea más grueso que el nominal en la degradación de su eficiencia aerodinámica máxima, con el objeto de poder establecer los límites de aceptación o rechazo de estas piezas una vez fabricadas, según el tipo de perfil aerodinámico utilizado. Del resultado del análisis de los casos estudiados se puede concluir que según aumenta el espesor del borde de salida, dentro del intervalo de estudio, la sustentación aerodinámica aumenta, así como la sustentación máxima, pero aumenta en mayor proporción la resistencia aerodinámica, por lo que se produce una reducción de la eficiencia aerodinámica, en particular de su valor máximo. Por otro lado, el hecho de redondear el borde de salida del perfil ayuda ligeramente a reducir este efecto. ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to analyze the effects of airfoil trailing edges thickness when this is thicker than the airfoil nominal. Several factors may lead to an airfoil trailing edge being thicker than the nominal airfoil, and this may affect various aerodynamic parameters. This study has focus on its influence on the airfoil’s aerodynamic lift, drag and, particularly on the aerodynamic efficiency of the airfoil, that is, the relationship between the aerodynamic lift and drag. It has also been studied how this fact may alter some other aerodynamic aspects of airfoils, such as stall, angle of attack of maximum lift, angle of maximum efficiency, aerodynamic moment coefficient and aerodynamic center position. These imperfections in the trailing edge may appear in some manufacturing processes of certain aerodynamic elements, such as unmanned aircraft wings or wind turbine blades. This phenomenon has not been deeply analyzed in the literature, although several authors have discussed its influence on airfoil with truncated trailing edge, or airfoils with thickened end, used in other applications. Various types of airfoils have been analyzed, laminar and non-laminar, symmetric and curved airfoils, and airfoils with different thickness, in order to compare the degree of influence of the phenomenon studied on each airfoil type and thus, to estimate the degree of sensitivity to the anomaly geometry. The study was carried out experimentally using a test chamber designed specifically for this purpose, as well as an electronic balance to measure the forces and moments on the airfoil, and a pressure scanner to measure distribution of pressures in certain cases. It has also been investigated the behavior of airfoils with trailing edge thicker than the nominal, but rounded instead of blunt, in order to analyze the effectiveness of the trailing edge rounding, which is one of the methods that can be used to mitigate this phenomenon. Moreover, as the behavior of the airfoil is highly dependent on the Reynolds number, the study has been focused on the analysis of the behavior at low Reynolds numbers due to recent use of low Reynolds numbers airfoils in a wide range of applications, from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to low power wind turbine blades, or even due to their potential use in aircraft designed to fly in low density atmospheres as the one existing in Mars. The main purpose of this research is to establish a set of criteria for quantifying the influence that a thicker-than–nominal-trailing edge has in the degradation of maximum aerodynamic efficiency, aiming at establishing the acceptance limits for these pieces when they are manufactured, according to the type of airfoil used. Based on the results obtained from the analysis of the cases under study it can be concluded that increasing the thickness of the trailing edge, within the range of study, increases aerodynamic lift, as well as maximum lift, but the aerodynamic drag increases in a higher proportion, and consequently there is a reduction of aerodynamic efficiency, particularly, of its maximum value. On the other hand, rounding the trailing edge of the airfoil slightly helps to reduce this effect.
