The problem addressed is one of model reference adaptive control (MRAC) of asymptotically stable plants of unknown order with zeros located anywhere in the s-plane except at the origin. The reference model is also asymptotically stable and lacking zero(s) at s = 0. The control law is to be specified only in terms of the inputs to and outputs of the plant and the reference model. For inputs from a class of functions that approach a non-zero constant, the problem is formulated in an optimal control framework. By successive refinements of the sub-optimal laws proposed here, two schemes are finally design-ed. These schemes are characterized by boundedness, convergence and optimality. Simplicity and total time-domain implementation are the additional striking features. Simulations to demonstrate the efficacy of the control schemes are presented.

A new computational tool is presented in this paper for suboptimal control design of a class of nonlinear distributed parameter systems. First proper orthogonal decomposition based problem-oriented basis functions are designed, which are then used in a Galerkin projection to come up with a low-order lumped parameter approximation. Next, a suboptimal controller is designed using the emerging /spl thetas/-D technique for lumped parameter systems. This time domain sub-optimal control solution is then mapped back to the distributed domain using the same basis functions, which essentially leads to a closed form solution for the controller in a state feedback form. Numerical results for a real-life nonlinear temperature control problem indicate that the proposed method holds promise as a good suboptimal control design technique for distributed parameter systems.

In this paper, we have developed a method to compute fractal dimension (FD) of discrete time signals, in the time domain, by modifying the box-counting method. The size of the box is dependent on the sampling frequency of the signal. The number of boxes required to completely cover the signal are obtained at multiple time resolutions. The time resolutions are made coarse by decimating the signal. The loglog plot of total number of boxes required to cover the curve versus size of the box used appears to be a straight line, whose slope is taken as an estimate of FD of the signal. The results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method using parametric fractal signals. The estimation accuracy of the method is compared with that of Katz, Sevcik, and Higuchi methods. In ddition, some properties of the FD are discussed.

This paper deals with the system oriented analysis, design, modeling, and implementation of active clamp HF link three phase converter. The main advantage of the topology is reduced size, weight, and cost of the isolation transformer. However, violation of basic power conversion rules due to presence of the leakage inductance in the HF transformer causes over voltage stresses across the cycloconverter devices. It makes use of the snubber circuit necessary in such topologies. The conventional RCD snubbers are dissipative in nature and hence inefficient. The efficiency of the system is greatly improved by using regenerative snubber or active clamp circuit. It consists of an active switching device with an anti-parallel diode and one capacitor to absorb the energy stored in the leakage inductance of the isolation transformer and to regenerate the same without affecting circuit performance. The turn on instant and duration of the active device are selected such that it requires simple commutation requirements. The time domain expressions for circuit dynamics, design criteria of the snubber capacitor with two conflicting constrains (over voltage stress across the devices and the resonating current duration), the simulation results based on generalized circuit model and the experimental results based on laboratory prototype are presented.

Cardiac autonomic neuropathy is known to occur in alcoholics but the extent of its subclinical form is not usually recognized, Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis can detect subclinical autonomic neuropathy. In this study the HRV parameters were compared in 20 neurologically asymptomatic alcoholics, 20 age-matched normals and 16 depressives. All were males, ECG was recorded in a quiet room for four minutes in supine position. Time and Frequency domain parameters of HRV were computed by a researcher blind to clinical details. Alcoholics had significantly smaller Coefficient of Variation of R-R intervals (CVR-R) on time domain analysis and smaller HF band (0.15-0.5 Hz) power on spectral analysis. The decreased Heart Rate Variability indicates cardiac autonomic dysfunction.

A simple method to generate time domain tailored waveforms for excitation of ion axial amplitude in Paul trap mass spectrometers is described. The method is based on vector summation of sine waves followed by time domain sampling to obtain the discrete time domain data. A smoothing technique based on the time domain Kaiser window is then applied to the data so as to minimize the frequency domain Gibb's oscillations. The dynamic range of the time domain signal is controlled by phase modulation and time extension of the time domain waveform. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Background. Respiratory irregularity has been previously reported in patients with panic disorder using time domain measures. However, the respiratory signal is not entirely linear and a few previous studies used approximate entropy (APEN), a measure of regularity of time series. We have been studying APEN and other nonlinear measures including a measure of chaos, the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE) of heart rate time series, in some detail. In this study, we used these measures of respiration to compare normal controls (n = 18) and patients with panic disorder (n = 22) in addition to the traditional time domain measures of respiratory rate and tidal volume. Methods: Respiratory signal was obtained by the Respitrace system using a thoracic and an abdominal belt, which was digitized at 500 Hz. Later, the time series were constructed at 4 Hz, as the highest frequency in this signal is limited to 0.5 Hz. We used 256 s of data (1,024 points) during supine and standing postures under normal breathing and controlled breathing at 12 breaths/min. Results: APEN was significantly higher in patients in standing posture during normal as well as controlled breathing (p = 0.002 and 0.02, respectively). LLE was also significantly higher in standing posture during normal breathing (p = 0.009). Similarly, the time domain measures of standard deviations and the coefficient of variation (COV) of tidal volume (TV) were significantly higher in the patient group (p = 0.02 and 0.004, respectively). The frequency of sighs was also higher in the patient group in standing posture (p = 0.02). In standing posture, LLE (p < 0.05) as well as APEN (p < 0.01) contributed significantly toward the separation of the two groups over and beyond the linear measure, i.e. the COV of TV. Conclusion: These findings support the previously described respiratory irregularity in patients with panic disorder and also illustrate the utility of nonlinear measures such as APEN and LLE as additional measures toward a better understanding of the abnormalities of respiratory physiology in similar patient populations as the correlation between LLE, APEN and some of the time domain measures only explained up to 50-60% of the variation. In this study, we investigated nonlinear measures of chaos of QT interval time series in 28 normal control subjects, 36 patients with panic disorder and 18 patients with major depression in supine and standing postures. We obtained the minimum embedding dimension (MED) and the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE) of instantaneous heart rate (HR) and QT interval series. MED quantifies the system's complexity and LLE predictability. There was a significantly lower MED and a significantly increased LLE of QT interval time series in patients. Most importantly, nonlinear indices of QT/HR time series, MEDqthr (MED of QT/HR) and LLEqthr (LLE of QT/HR), were highly significantly different between controls and both patient groups in either posture. Results remained the same even after adjusting for age. The increased LLE of QT interval time, series in patients with anxiety and depression is in line with our previous findings of higher QTvi (QT variability index, a log ratio of QT variability corrected for mean QT squared divided by heart rate variability corrected for mean heart rate squared) in these patients, using linear techniques. Increased LLEqthr (LLE of QT/HR) may be a more sensitive tool to study cardiac repolarization and a valuable addition to the time domain measures such as QTvi. This is especially important in light of the finding that LLEqthr correlated poorly and nonsignificantly with QTvi. These findings suggest an increase in relative cardiac sympathetic activity and a decrease in certain aspects of cardiac vagal function in patients with anxiety as well as depression. The lack of correlation between QTvi and LLEqthr suggests that this nonlinear index is a valuable addition to the linear measures. These findings may also help to explain the higher incidence of cardiovascular mortality in patients with anxiety and depressive disorders. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Pre-whitening techniques are employed in blind correlation detection of additive spread spectrum watermarks in audio signals to reduce the host signal interference. A direct deterministic whitening (DDW) scheme is derived in this paper from the frequency domain analysis of the time domain correlation process. Our experimental studies reveal that, the Savitzky-Golay Whitening (SGW), which is otherwise inferior to DDW technique, performs better when the audio signal is predominantly lowpass. The novelty of this paper lies in exploiting the complementary nature to the two whitening techniques to obtain a hybrid whitening (HbW) scheme. In the hybrid scheme the DDW and SGW techniques are selectively applied, based on short time spectral characteristics of the audio signal. The hybrid scheme extends the reliability of watermark detection to a wider range of audio signals.

A preliminary attempt has been made to study the time domain characteristics of the induced voltage and current on the rocket and its exhaust plume (ionized trail) when it is coupled with the transient electromagnetic field generated by a nearby lightning discharge. For the computation, finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique has been used where the object is assumed to be a finite vertical nonuniform transmission line above a perfectly conducting ground. It is seen that the amplitude of the first peak of the induced voltage and current at the mid point of the object is 23.5 kV and 4.9 kA respectively.

The contemporary methods for source characterization rely mainly on experiments. These methods produce inaccurate results in the low‐frequency band, where the characteristics are all the more important. Moreover, the experimental methods cannot be used at the design stage. Hence, a numerical technique to obtain the source characteristics is desirable. In this paper, the pressure‐time history and the mass‐flux‐time history obtained by means of the time‐domain analysis have been used, along with the two‐load method to compute the source characteristics. Two new computational methods for obtaining the source characteristics have been described. These are much simpler, and computationally more economical than the complete time‐domain simulation, which makes use of the method of characteristics.

He propose a new time domain method for efficient representation of the KCG and delineation of its component waves. The method is based on the multipulse Linear prediction (LP) coding which is being widely used in speech processing. The excitation to the LP synthesis filter consists of a few pulses defined by their locations and amplitudes. Based on the amplitudes and their distribution, the pulses are suitably combined to delineate the component waves. Beat to beat correlation in the ECG signal is used in QRS periodicity prediction. The method entails a data compression of 1 in 6. The method reconstructs the signal with an NMSE of less than 5%.

Since the days of Digital Subscriber Links (DSL), time domain equalizers (TEQ's) have been used to combat time dispersive channels in Multicarrier Systems. In this paper, we propose computationally inexpensive techniques to recompute TEQ weights in the presence of changes in the channel, especially over fast fading channels. The techniques use no extra information except the perturbation to the channel itself, and provide excellent approximations to the new TEQ weights. Adaptation methods for two existing Channel shortening algorithms are proposed and their performance over randomly varying, randomly perturbed channels is studied. The proposed adaptation techniques are shown to perform admirably well for small changes in channels for OFDM systems. (C) 2012 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

This paper illustrates the application of a new technique, based on Support Vector Clustering (SVC) for the direct identification of coherent synchronous generators in a large interconnected Multi-Machine Power Systems. The clustering is based on coherency measures, obtained from the time domain responses of the generators following system disturbances. The proposed clustering algorithm could be integrated into a wide-area measurement system that enables fast identification of coherent clusters of generators for the construction of dynamic equivalent models. An application of the proposed method is demonstrated on a practical 15 generators 72-bus system, an equivalent of Indian Southern grid in an attempt to show the effectiveness of this clustering approach. The effects of short circuit fault locations on coherency are also investigated.
