Educação sexual na escola a partir da psicologia histórico-cultural

Este artigo relata um projeto na área da Psicologia da Educação com referencial histórico-cultural. O projeto foi desenvolvido em uma escola de ensino fundamental que teve como objetivo oferecer educação sexual para adolescentes auxiliando-os para viverem com autonomia e responsabilidade sua sexualidade. A intervenção ocorreu em 15 encontros semanais, com o uso de diferentes estratégias metodológicas abrangendo os seguintes temas: 1) Identidade Grupal e levantamento de expectativas, 2) regras de convívio grupal, 3) Conceito de Sexualidade; 4) Conceito social de adolescência, 5) Fisiologia e saúde, 6) Saúde Sexual e reprodutiva, 7) Iniciação Sexual, 8) Gravidez na Adolescência, 9) Violência Sexual, 10) Padrões de Beleza e atitudes de discriminação e 11) Gênero e diversidade sexual. Alunos e professores avaliaram a proposta de intervenção como satisfatória e necessária na escola. Almeja-se a continuidade do projeto com outros alunos e oferecer formação aos professores.

A biologia em obras infantis de Monteiro Lobato: modulações literárias, científicas e culturais

A tessitura deste trabalho abarca os traços da Biologia presentes em duas obras infanto-juvenis de Monteiro Lobato. Os entendimentos acerca dos traços biológicos como evolução, seleção natural, tamanho, classificação e organização natural se hibridizam, mesclam-se a outros discursos e significados e apontam relações e significações que se dão entre os espaços - diferenças - dos múltiplos conhecimentos. Ao reconhecer que a Biologia participa dessa Literatura, construiu-se um olhar para seus significados que são (re)criados em relação às diferenças, não funcionando como decalque, cópia de um campo cultural único ou suposto como original. Ao migrar para o texto, os significados culturais desses traços biológicos expandem o campo da escritura por uma interrupção e um espaçamento. Investigaram-se as relações de diferenças que se estabelecem entre Literatura e Biologia, e a intensidade das narrativas que trazem traços de crenças, valores, interesses políticos no discurso científico, e que são arrastados para a Literatura, num trajeto híbrido e nômade.

Algumas reflexões sobre relacionamentos afetivos e relações sexuais na adolescência

Sexo e sexualidade são temas bastante abordados pela sociedade e suas instituições, desde a mídia até a universidade. Também a escola de ensino fundamental e médio vem sendo apontada como espaço propício para se trabalhar com orientação sexual, considerando inclusive as questões em voga como a gravidez não planejada na adolescência, as relações de gênero, o combate à homofobia e as doenças sexualmente transmissíveis, particularmente a AIDS. O presente trabalho é resultado de uma pesquisa realizada com adolescentes de 14 a 19 anos, estudantes de uma escola pública de ensino médio, tendo como objetivos verificar como pensam e se comportam os jovens frente a questões e atitudes que envolvem sexo e sexualidade. A técnica de coleta de dados foi a redação, em que os sujeitos escreveram sobre idéias, práticas e comportamentos sexuais, sendo que no recorte feito para a apresentação deste artigo, nos prendemos aos relacionamentos afetivos e relações sexuais.

Growth and developmental outcomes of the extremely preterm infant

Objetive: To provide information for pediatricians and neonatologists to create realistic outcome expectations and thus help plan their actions. Sources of data: Searches were made of the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, and Lilacs databases. Summary of the findings: The assessment of growth and development over the first 2-3 years must adjust chronological age with respect of the degree of prematurity. There is special concern regarding the prognoses of small for gestational age preterm infants, and for those with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Attention must be directed towards improving the nutrition of extremely low birth weight infants during their first years of life; these infants have high prevalence levels of failure to catch-up on growth, diseases and rehospitalizations during their first 2 years. They are frequently underweight and shorter than expected during early childhood, but delayed catch-up growth may occur between 8 and 14 years. Extremely low birth weight infants are at increased risk of neurological abnormalities and developmental delays during their first years of life. Educational, psychological, and behavioral problems are frequent during school years. Teenage and adult outcomes show that although some performance differences persist, social integration is not impaired. Conclusions: The growth and neurodevelopment of all ELBW infants must be carefully monitored after discharge, to ensure that children and their families receive adequate support and intervention to optimize prognoses. Relationship between gingival clinical parameters and the reactivity of the BANA test in subgingival samples from children.

Gingivitis is the first manifestation of periodontal disease, and is characterized by painless and slow evolution. Early diagnosis and intervention must be done to avoid the possibility of precocious periodontitis during the childhood or teenage years. The enzymatic BANA test (N-benzoyl-DL-arginine-naphthylamide) was used to evaluate subgingival samples from 54 children between 6 and 9 years of age. Plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI) were assessed according to the criteria recommended by Löe (1967). Subgingival plaque was collected from the region that featured the greatest periodontal alteration, represented by a higher gingival index. Resulting data were grouped individually according to visible and non-visible plaque and bleeding and non-bleeding gingiva. Results showed that there was no statistically significant correlation between the presence of visible plaque and the positivity of the BANA test, nor was there a statistically significant correlation between the presence of bleeding and the positivity of the BANA test in subgingival samples obtained from children. This study concluded that the BANA test is not an ideal diagnostic test to be applied to children.

Reduction of infant mortality in Latin America and the Caribbean: uneven progress requiring a variety of responses

Infant mortality has unquestionably declined throughout Latin America over the last decade, even under conditions of low and unstable economic growth and a meagre overall reduction of poverty in the region. The declines in infant mortality vary from one country to another. The persistence of high infant mortality rates is related to low income, teenage pregnancy and lack of access to basic services, as well as to the lack of appropriate health care infrastructure. At the same time, both the rural population as a whole, and the indigenous and Afro-descendent population in particular, has fallen markedly behind, with overall infant mortality rates much higher than among the rest of the population. Moreover, the cause and incidence of death in this age group have been changing according with the changes in neonatal and post-neonatal deaths. Our editorial line-up has created space for opinions from adolescents and youth, as well as from policy experts on the problem, its causes, and approaches to dealing with infant mortality. We also offer succinct information on a broad range of programmes—utilizing various interventions—in different countries of the region regarding maternal and infant care, in an attempt to bring about a reduction in mortality.
